I have an AT&T branded Galaxy SII i727 Skyrocket (4G LTE). It is not unlocked, has not been rooted and runs AT&T firmware. The phone was purchased independent of a contract (eBay). I am a very light user, but I find it convenient to have a data plan and initially used AT&T GoPhone prepaid. Phone and SMS worked properly on AT&T right away, but some tweaking was required to get data to work. After a few months, I switched to Consumer Cellular (AT&T MVNO). Again, data did not work at first, but CC's tech support gave me revised Access Point Name settings and all became as it should have been.
Recently (I don't remember exactly when, but it was in early or mid December), I finally gave in to the phone's insistence on updating to a later firmware version. From then on, I have been unable to get data to work at all. the 4G symbol no longer appears (although I doubt it was ever actually a 4G connection) and any App that requires a data connection (web, email, etc) complains about no connection. WiFi, on the other hand, works properly with all such Apps.
Here are the specifics of my phone:
Samsung SGH-I727
Android 4.04
Baseband Version I727UCLI3
Kernel Version:
3.0.8-1127534
[email protected]#1
SMPPREEMPT Thu Sep 27 23:12:45 KST 2012
2012Build number IMM76D.UCLI3
My questions are these:
Has anyone had this sort of problem (data on Consumer Cellular fails after upgrade)? If so, how did you solve it?
Was this problem caused by the upgrade? If not, what other issues might have caused it and how can they be corrected?
How can I revert the firmware to the previous version to confirm the cause and/or resolve it?
What else can I do to get my data connection back?
I am not particularly Android savvy, but I am not shy about making changes in settings and/or installing fixes.
Thanks,
Tenaya

Here's a silly question but did you add the APN your carrier gave you back after the update?

No, not silly.
Since I had to do that to fix both previous problems, it was the first thing I did.

Consumer Cellular APN settings for Skyrocket i727
I recently moved my service from AT&T to Consumer Cellular using my existing Samsung Skyrockets. The new phone signal is identical to that of the old as far as I can tell. (same towers) My issue came when trying to setup my text and data side of my Samsung Skyrocket. The settings provided by CC on their website are incomplete. Be prepared to speak with a 2nd level tech to accomplish all of the connections required on "their" end. Here are the APN settings that are working on my two i727's as of Jan 2014. Both are running 4.1.2
Name: Consumer Cellular
APN: att.mvno
Proxy: "66 . 209 . 11 . 32" (without spaces)
Port: 80
User name: Not set
Pasword: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: http :// mmsc . cingular . com (without spaces)
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: PAP
APN type: default,supl,mms,agps,fota
APN protocal: IPv4
Enable/disable APN: APN enabled (check)
Bearer: Unspecified
very helpful for my Skyrocket
Thanks for posting this. I had data working on my AT&T skyrocket, now used with Consumer Cellular, and then it stopped for no apparent reason. I had all the same settings as above, but on my phone the Authentication Type was unspecified or none. I changed it to PAP and now data is back. I don't know if I had never set this before, or if something changed it, but I'm glad it seems to be working again.
always when you format your phone, check the APN settings.
If it isn't configured you won't be able to surf.
happy to hear you fixed the issue.
good while it lasted -30 min

While changing that setting did bring the data connection back to life, it seems to have disappeared again. I'm not sure why. When I turn airplane mode on and then off, data doesn't reconnect. When I reboot the phone it seems to connect after maybe 15 minutes of trying. Could it be a bad sim card? Or maybe should I do a complete reset of the phone? I don't see anyone else reporting these sorts of symptoms, so maybe it is specific to my phone.
Another option for Consumer Cellular APN settings
I just got off the phone (third time in a week) with a tech support person at CC. They said they think they knew the problem. Because the AT&T SGH-I727 skyrocket is 4G LTE capable, a new APN should be set up:
Name: ccilte
APN: ccdata
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
Server: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: PAP
APN type: default,mms,supl
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
I asked a couple of times if they really should be backslashes for Server and MMSC, rather than forward slashes. They insisted they should be backslashes, which is what I put in, and it worked, and then I changed them to forward slashes (which seems more appropriate) and that works too. That was weird, since I'd expect one to fail. So now I seem to get a data connection (it has been almost a day and it hasn't dropped data service). I even went in and out of airplane mode, turned wifi on and off, and data came right back, which never happened before. Hopefully this may help someone else who made the bumpy transition to Consumer Cellular.

Has anyone unlocked their captivate? how did you do so, buy an unlock code? and has any one attempted to use it with tmobile tzones hack. since it is quad band, technically it should work with tmobile 3g and since tmobile doesnt have the imei's the tzones hack should theoretically work. i am just looking for conformation before i give up my nexus for this device.
any one have any insights?
No unlock yet. Check around the forums. It's being discussed here:

Sorry to bust your bubble, but the AT&T Samsung Captivate handles these 3G bands [3G UMTS/HSDPA (850/900/1900/2100 MHz)].
Notice that there is no 1700 (AWS) band, which is Tmobile's 3G band. So at most even if you successfully get it unlocked you'll be limited to 2.5G EDGE only on Tmobile, no 3G.

true, I have unlocked Captivate with my T-Mobile SIM from work and it shows only Edge anywhere, even next to cell tower at work where I was getting full bars 3G on MyTouch.
Is there any way around it?
So does this phone work with Tzone or Web2Go including GPS and push email? Thanks
I have my Captivate unlocked and its working on T-Mobile, except for data
Anyone know what the APN settings might be that work? The T-Mobile SIM I have in the phone has a data plan attached to it. Ive tried all the APN's I could find on the web (at least 4 variations) and none seem to give me EDGE. I know the 3G wont work, but Im just curious about getting at least the EDGE to work.
Thanks in advance!

EDIT: It seems one of the APNs worked for me, I just had to restart the phone after entering it.
i have an un-captivate.. everything seems to work fine but yes.. only 2g's

Thanks for the reply. I edited my post, it started working after I restarted the phone. Originally it was showing full service but no Edge icon, thus nothing data related was working (almost everything, haha). Voice calls in and out were fine, but nothing else. Once I restarted the phone it fired up and was on Edge just fine. I have since swapped back to my AT&T sim because Im evaluation their service in my area, but I wanted to know it would work on T-Mobile in case I cancel AT&T so I can keep the phone

Is there anyway you can post the settings?
I've try everything but can't get to work.
I also have a default data setting (T-Mobile US 310 310)
That don't work but I can create a new APN, just need to know the settings.

This was all formatted for use on an iPhone so I'm not sure how the fields differ on the Captivate. But good luck to you all trying to get it working.

I found out the issue. I had installed AdBlocker Plus (ABP). This app apparently queries all internet requests through their own servers. They were blocking MMS. I happened upon a post on Reddit that had the same issue and that's how they solved it.

HOLY CRAP. THANK YOU FOR THIS. I was going nuts trying to figure this out.
On CyanogenMod I use the default. I had a S4 before I had my Nexus5 so I didn't touch my plan, just took my SIM out and threw it in the Nexus 5.
APN that works for me perfectly fine on LTE and HSPA+ and HSPA is same as "ATT Phone" listed above. Thats on a regular AT&T Family Plan.

I did the same thing, although I've been hearing that cell reception is better with the Nexus 5 than the S4, so I'm wondering if there's anything I need to do aside from just putting the different SIM card in my phone...it works well but I do get call drops I wasn't getting with the S4, it's acting up unlike the S4 - even though I hear it has far better reception.
Do I NEED to have them provision my phone?

No. You hear horror stories of when people call and try to provision the Nexus 5 with AT&T. The Nexus 5 isn't in this provisioning database, as it's a "unsupported" phone they don't tell (They won't touch anything with a unlockable bootloader). Because of this many times people get provisioned for a 3G phone as their generic phone provision doesn't support LTE or something along those lines. It all depends on who does the provisioning. Some people you talk to will set it up correctly, others will not. I've heard stories of people having to give them IMEI's of other supported LTE phones to regain LTE access after such issues.
If it works, don't touch it, and don't let AT&T know you have the Nexus 5 as long as you don't have to.
As for reception on AT&T. I really don't notice a difference between my S4 and the Nexus 5. A month before I got rid of my S4 I got a drop in service, as a LTE tower popped up in range, however I only get 1 bar of service from it, and both my S4 and Nexus 5 tries to connect to that, where as I have a full 4 or 5 bars service on a HSPA+ (3G) tower that is closer. I have to manually switch network mode to 3G only sometimes while home in order to guarantee I get calls.
To get adblockplus to work with AT&T MMS change the MMS port to 8080 from 80.

Hello my friend,
I'm grateful for your thorough reply. On my AT&T account online, it shows up as "no image" and I think on one page says Nexus 5. I never called anyone. I only popped in the SIM card.
Phenomenal insight regarding the low signal from the new LTE tower. Here is a question:
Is there an existing mod (or a best way to make a services mod) for a rooted Nexus 5 that will essentially switch down from LTE based on an algorithm determining signal db noise db etc. so that it kicks down when the signal is too low and does a query of the higher bands while kicked down at efficient intervals? I'm going to post this Q as it's own thread, actually. Been looking, can't find anything.
Again, much thanks for your thorough and very helpful response, WoodburyMan.

Haven't found anything like it yet. However it would be easy to set up. I forgot the app but there is some big app out there that can trigger events with certain conditions. Can't remember the name right now. Example: When see my home wifi connection, turn off bluetooth, and have it switch from LTE to 3G/2G mode. And when it detects say the WiFi at my work, switch from 3G/2G to LTE network type and such. That might be something worth looking into.
Well now. Seems I'm in that boat of trying to get Nexus 5 to work on AT&T.
Originally my Nexus 5 worked right out of the box with the "Phone" APN, which is a APN cable of being used on LTE networks.
This is because I originally had my phone Provisioned / Data Plan setup on a Galaxy S4 I bought from AT&T, and I simply swapped my SIM out to the Nexus.
Now, I just changed jobs, and one of the perks is job pays for my phone and data. (Woohoo!). They are also with AT&T, which makes things somewhat easier. However, now, when the account manager setup my phone, AT&T Business assumibly used the IMEI off my Nexus 5 to setup my phone and provision it on their system. Inadvertently it was set up with a Non-4G Provisioning, so that my phone would not be allowed on LTE networks. Likewise, the old "Phone" APN no longer works, and I have to use "ATT" "wap.cingular" APN to connect to get data on 3G.
I will be going to a AT&T store tonight to try and get this sorted out. Will post back with results. I believe all they need to do is reprovision my phone as LTE cable.
Went to local AT&T store. I was in and out in around 5 minutes.
Walking in, told them how I had working 4G LTE before, and I believe it was just provisioned correctly, and how I know it's a common problem with this phone as the Nexus 5 isn't in their system. They copied down my IMEI, shut my phone down, and reprovisioned my phone as a LTE capable device. Turned it back on, BAM LTE. ATT Phone APN did not work, the one I used before. However ATT LTE APN that uses pta in it's setting did work. Perfect! All set and done. Surprised as how easy it was.

Sorry to go off topic here, but I have an S4 right now and have been thinking about switching to a Nexus 5.
How do you guys like your Nexus compared to the S4? How does the battery life compare?
My two main fears is the camera quality and battery life will be worse on the Nexus.
Thank you so much for this! Followed your instructions and now I have my sprint phone unlocked and running on AT&T! No LTE but thats ok.:good:

I will never go back to Samsung. Their AOSP support is horrible, I can't stand TouchWiz, and the camera was horrible. I had a iPhone 4S, went to the Galaxy S4 and camera was horrible compared to my 4S. Went to the Nexus 5.. best phone camera I've had so far. Love the HDR+ feature in the camera. Battery life for me was the same. The removable battery on the S4 was nice, I'd just swap batteries out on the go. I got a ZeroLemon case for the Nexus5 though works good.

Read what I had to go through a post or two back. You can get LTE working it's just a matter of trying a different APN like the pta or phone APN's, or having them re-provision your phone properly. A good sales person or tech at a AT&T store can get you sorted out in a few minutes.
Following up these are the APN settings that work with LTE on a AT&T Business account. (ATT LTE, aka ATT PTA). Previousl "ATT Phone" APN worked for me on a personal AT&T account with LTE.

Hey all, Moto G US version owner here, and having trouble getting MMS working on at&t. I spent some time on the phone with them earlier and was more or less told that the phone wouldn't work right on network, or something to that effect. This was frustrating since everything else worked fine, and it is supposedly tailored for US networks after all. So I tried several different APN settings from online but to no avail. I even copied over the APN settings from my unlocked GS3 (which has no problems at all on at&t's network) and it still wouldn't work. I've contacted Moto's customer service as well and they've given me the number for Level 2 support, will be speaking to them soon.
I'm at a loss here.. yes, it is a new device and all, but is anybody else having this problem?
Try Handcent

I was able to sent text messages just fine, but not MMS photos. I installed Handcent and set the photo size to 100k and the messages went through. I'll be calling Tmobile tomorrow to make sure it's not a provisioning issue.
I'll update if a solution is found.

Would this help with receiving MMS messages though? I have issues sending and receiving them currently. Have not had an opportunity to speak with Motorola's level 2 support yet.

I'm on AT&T Gophone, not AT&T postpaid, so your experience may be different, but I've had no problem sending MMS to other phones (android + iphones) or receiving them.
The AT&T rep set up two APN that I can see, including them here for you to try out if you want:

Prepaid? Last I remember prepaid doesn't support 4G devices for data. And MMS uses data, not wifi. And while I'm aware the MotoG can use 3G(I have mine on Verizon)...AT&T tends to lock down their better phones to 4G only to get users on the contract.
I could be mistake and that phone is supported, but I don't believe they run 4G on prepaid/gophone and hence you might not be able to run data.
As of 2012 they had an inner memo to their call centers saying that 4G devices, Rimms, and iPhones wouldn't be supported for Data any further.
Having same problem as original post
I'm having the same problem as original post, except I'm using StraightTalk. My Moto G is the US version - GSM (uses AT&T network). I've set it up to use the APN that StraightTalk provided. Browser works OK, so I know data services are working, but I can't send or receive MMS messages. I've also tried Handcent that was mentioned in this thread, but it still doesn't seem to be sending. I've also tried the AT&T APN settings from this thread, but no go. Not sure what else to do...
Please forgive me if this has been asked already multiple times, but I can't seem to find any recent answers that help.
I currently have Verizon for service and my wife and I each have the Verizon S3 phones.
A few days ago she had gone to the Tmobile website and saw the cheaper rates and ordered 2 sim cards for Tmobile service and signed up to have our numbers ported. Since then, our phones are not working and Verizon says once they get notified that you are cancelling your account, they automatically shut your phones off and then completely cancel you once the billing period is up, leaving us with no phones at all (we have no landline).
Our Sim cards are set to be delivered Tuesday and I need to know what, if any can be done to at the very least be able to get voice service with the Tmobile cards.
I can find older posts from 2013 about how to dial *#197328640# and go through an unlock procedure, but since my phone was bought August 2013 and now has Android 4.3 running I am also finding answers of people saying basically if you have 4.3 you are out of luck.
I am not new to flashing Roms or anything, I just need to be pointed in the right direction on what can and can't be done, like do I need to load a 4.1 Rom? I'm trying to at least have voice service until I can buy Tmobile phones if needed.
Thank you in advance for any information that can help.

I just changed service to T-mobile, got a micro-sim (full sized won't fit) and inserted it into my rooted Verizon S3 running PacRom 4.3 don't recall which nightly. Go into system settings->mobile networks->apn and confirm that t-mobile apns are present and selected (select one if not) and you should be connected, at least for voice. I currently have voice working, can receive sms/mms but not send and have edge level data connection, my understanding is the appropriate radios for t-mobile LTE aren't in the verizon version.
There are numerous useful threads around here, I'll try and find a few of them and link to them

Thanks for the info.
Once my SIM cards arrived, I just popped one in and it didn't work. I ended up grabbing a friend's phone and plugged in the following APN settings and got everything but MMS messaging (still limited to EDGE data though). I didn't have to root at all, but since then I have rooted and will be adding a custom ROM just to get rid of all the Verizon bloatware
Name: T-Mobile US
APN: epc.tmobile.com

Moving to kitkat resolved my mms not sending issue, no idea why. I'm still pretty sure we're not going to get better than Edge, but I mostly use wifi so it hasn't been problematic for me.
Here's the APN I use on my S3, PacMan 4.4 3/31/14 Nightly (came built in)

Must be something with the ROM cuz I can't get MMS fixed with those APN settings..... did you upgrade from an OTA 4.3?

I never did the OTA 4.3, I'd read there was no going back at the time so the OTA upgrade is what prompted me to install a non stock ROM in the first place. So I think I upgraded from 4.1.
I'm not sure which version of CM11 this began in or if it's even the cause but this is the only real major change I have on the phone. It was working fine before, but lately I've noticed LTE slowdowns to speeds like 60K and 130K. I used to get around 30Mbit and apps would just download so fast and I'd have no issues streaming YouTube videos. Before I waste my time contacting AT&T dealing with tier 1 support who knows less than I do about my phone I wanted to check with XDA.
I'm using AT&T GoPhone as my provider. Specifically the plan called "$45 monthly available at Walmart" https://www.paygonline.com/websc/rateplans.html (Note, you don't have to go to Walmart at all for this, I changed over to this plan form the $60 one when I noticed they added it to the list.)

right.
first thing you need to do is contact your provider. whats the point of doing troubleshooting if the issue is with your provider. if its not the provider, we will go on.

I called and told them that the speeds are slow for downloading and streaming and they asked if I'd like to "add more megabytes to my phone". She was stuttering like crazy and having trouble completing her sentences. She was clearly reading from a guide and took long pauses between all her questions. This is why I hate speaking with providers .
She asked when it started happening and I said this month. Then she asked if it's also slow when I access websites on my phone. I explained that it isn't visually slow but that it wouldn't make sense for a mobile website to load slow. Then she asked how long it's been happening, "2 weeks?" I explained about the entire month. She asked if I have an LG phone then I said yes. She asked how many apps or games I download per day, I said less than one and she asked "how long will it took you to complete those downloads?". I explained it depends on file size. She said "it also depends on the details that say that certain application [unclear] megabyte [unclear] megabyte so it will be easier to do that. Mhm, there. so is there any error message any time you try to download applications?" I said no.
She asked for my zip code to check the outage in my area. She said thanks for letting them know I'm concerned with "my issues" and that they are "reporting a case here" and "providing information to their support". They added 50MB of data allowance to my phone plan. She kept going back and forth between adding $10 credit and adding 50MB of data, then she said 500MB of data for $10. Then she started calling it "megabits". I checked, they added 500MB.
She transferred me to tech support and I explained the situation. She asked me if the problem is that the speed is slow and when did this start happening, despite arleady providing this information. It's like they have some kind of form to fill out and they don't listen and just select things from dropdown boxes or something. After confirming my account she also asked if I'm on the $45 monthly plan, shouldn't they already know this? What a waste of time.. She asked what type of phone I have next then asked if it's AT&T branded. Then she read off the APN settings I should use (lol she said forward-slash forward-slash). She said APN type should be "default, mms, supl, hipri". She called Bearer "barrier" and I asked about APN roaming protocol and MVNO type and she said they don't have that. After changing the APN type the speeds were still slow.
She said she's going to refresh their connection with my phone and asked me to power it off, then a moment later to power it on. It was still slow so she asked for my city, state, and ZIP code. She said the towers in my area are definitely not the problem. By this time I noticed that the APN settings reverted, and I found there's an option I have to select to save the APN after changing it so I went and added that again, and informed her. Did another power cycle. No change. She asked if I recently downloaded keyboard or messenger apps and if there's any liquid or physical damage and how old my SIM card is. Next I was asked how often I update the software on the phone.
She said she's creating a case and the NOC will take care of it. She said she's going to credit my account and understands the frustration. She asked for the Android version and about what date I remember it last working properly. That was a 57 minute phone call that resolved nothing But I did it!
Let's get started?
EDIT: Saw you replied while I was on the phone, going to try that out now.

we can check if its cm.. make a nandroid backup in your recovery, then fully wipe and flash a stock or aosp rom. if the data speeds improve, then its cm. you can always restore your backup to get back to where you were in cm.
I know this is unrelated to your plan or helpful but reading that att has been accused of throttling back users download speeds for more expensive data plans
www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/28/att-slowing-speeds-data-throttling-ftc_n_6062360.html
As above you should try another rom/stock and see if speeds improve.
Interesting, the date makes this throttling idea very plausible. I made a backup, but before I got around to flashing any ROMs I took a nap and when I woke up I noticed I had no signal at all. Not 0/4 bars no signal, but no signal as in can't connect to the network. I tried toggling the connection and got nothing. I tried toggling airplane mode next, and still nothing. I reboot the phone and had signal again. I decided to do a speed test and the speeds are back to normal now.
(As I typed this I was watching that news video and that doesn't apply to me necessarily because it's contract-based. They were talking about "Unlimited Data" plans. I had the plan that allowed me 2GB per month (later 2.5GB) then switched to the 1GB allowance plan a couple months ago.)
Anyways here we go:
