[Q] Photon Q the better choice? - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

I told myself if the iphone 5 wasn't jailbroken by this year I was switching back to Android, but the problem now is that I'm on Sprint. Which to my knowledge doesn't have too many viable options. ( I strongly dislike the S3 because of it's crappy screen being easily broken). I had the original Droid, but it was for Verizon and I'm pretty sure I can't put a Droid 4 or my own on Sprint now. I've read this Photon Q 4G is the equivalent or better than the Droid 4, but I want to be sure I'm making a good decision with this. I like the QWERTY keyboard for things like emulators being played easily and stuff, but if it's low end then I would be welcome to other suggestions.

Can't speak to the Droid 4 as I've never seen or used that phone. Not to open an iOS vs Android debate... but i'd sooner have Richard Simmons give me a Tabasco enema then own an iPhone. If you want an iPhone, get an iPhone.
The Q has a great keyboard, nice display, and SnapDragon s4 1.5ghz dual core with 1GB of RAM. There is no lag with switching apps and mine has really good battery life. It does not have a huge dev community like some other phones, but the stock rom has very little wrong with it, and you can get a good deal through BestBuy or Costco. I love the Android OS and admittedly am a huge fan boy. There is nothing wrong with ios if you don't care about the phone being stuck "as is."
Just my thoughts.
Sent from my XT897 using xda app-developers app

The Droid 4 is a glorified Droid 3 with LTE... It uses year and a half old hardware.
The Q uses the brand new Snapdragon S4 chip, while the Droid 4 is using an aged OMAP 4. The performance differences are night and day. I'd say it is a similar difference as going from Tegra 2 to Tegra 3, and the S4 > Tegra 3.
I don't really understand your comment about the GS3 having an easily broken screen, though. I had one for a good 3 months and wasn't too careful with it (dropped a good amount of times), but it never got more than a bump in the casing. It's a very capable phone.
As for iPhone/Photon Q debate. I'm major anti-Apple (have owned countless iPods in the past, but nothing more) and recommend almost everyone who comes to me to get an Android phone. I point older folk, less tech-savvy people, or hipsters to iPhones.

Thank you both for the reply, but I think you misunderstood my first post. (or I didn't word it right). Anyway, I already own the i5, but because it isn't jailbroken decided to go back to Android. The only thing I needed to know was about the Photon Q 4G. I love Android because I feel in complete control no matter what, but with an iphone I know I'm always limited. I don't hate or love one more than the other (yet), but I've been reading the Q runs on equal terms with the GS3 and such as well. With a low dev community that's a medium sized let down, but do they at least have custom kernels to change the look and theme of the phone like the old Droid had?

The dev support on the Photon Q right now is a bit of a letdown if you come from another platform that had/has very active development.
I came from the Epic and that's the exact case. Going from having lists of ROMs, kernels, tweaks, hacks, and mods to almost nothing does make you feel like you're "losing" something, but then as you dive in and begin using the Photon Q, you start to understand why.
Straight out of the box, at least for me, the experience is better. It's smoother, quicker, and just all around better than my Epic ever thought of being. Battery life is considerably better. My Epic was custom kernel'd, overclock/undervolt and had what I thought to be pretty good battery life, but I still carried a spare battery in my pocket for those heavy use days. Seeing that the Photon Q had a non-removable battery concerned me, but the battery life is so much better it hasn't been an issue, and we all know how it is when you have a new platform, you can hardly put it down so all the days have been heavy use days and I haven't once thought "dang, wish I had a charged battery in my pocket I could swap".
Your last statement is a little off... There are to my knowledge two custom kernels for the Photon Q, however a kernel has little to nothing to do with customizing the theme/look/feel. Just skimming the custom kernel threads it doesn't seem as though they have all the wrinkles ironed out on them yet, so I'm still on the stock kernel because honestly I just don't feel a real need to change.
There are a few simply UI mods out there right now, but nothing yet in the realm of a full on theme.
There's a few little things here and there about the Photon Q I personally don't like, but it's mainly just visual stuff like the turquoise percent bars and overscroll, full charge notification/popup, etc.
All in all, it's the best phone out of the box I've had. I'm usually VERY mod happy, but this one really is done almost 100% right stock.

If you got this phone, I highly doubt you'd regret it. Especially coming from an iPhone 5.

Thread moved. Please post questions here in Q&A in future.
Thanks

[Q] Infuse or Atrix

I am upgrading to a smartphone and really have no idea about anything... I am fairly tech savy with computers so I figured it was high time but after spending over 4 hours on anandtech comparing benchs and roaming the various sites I still feel like I don't know anything about smartphones...
At the moment I am hellbent on sticking with AT&T because I get a huge discount through my work (Grandfathered into unlimited data etc.)...
What I understand is that the Galaxy S2 or whatever is by far the best phone but it is also very expensive atm (800 dollars?) in U.S. and is not yet mainstream, so I can't spend that kind of money. I need my phone by sunday for work (job change), so I think the Atrix and Infuse are the two best 4G phones from AT&T...
Atrix has the dual core so it basically runs a little faster, smaller screen, matrix screen etc. etc.
Infuse is larger, maybe slightly longer(?) battery life due to single core, has a superior screen and is rootable/unlockable or something due to the bootloader(?)
Being a tech junkie I crave speed and hate waiting for anything so the atrix loads web pages and programs faster so that seems appetizing at first. This has to be weighed against the "custom goodies" you can get with the infuse.
So basically please help, I have no idea what a locked bootloader means, why it is bad that the atrix has that, and what the "custom goodies" that come from having a rootable(?) phone are for the Infuse. My understanding is that the Infuse is more customizable (how exactly?). Really my understanding between these two phones is that besides the superior sound and video quality from the infuse (bigger size too) is that the atrix is faster and that has to be weighed against how customizable the infuse is. Sorry for the vague questions but I don't really know much, I realize I am posting on the infuse boards so the responses might be somewhat bias.
Sorry if this is the wrong place this is my first post and first quest into the world of smartphones...
Simple - Motoblur is a steaming turd that slows down phones and eats battery, and the locked bootloader of Motorola devices means that you are stuck with whatever turd Moto gives you. A lot of people felt that even the (slightly weaker than the Infuse) HTC Inspire was faster in actual usability for most tasks than the Atrix due to the crappiness of Motoblur.
With an unlocked bootloader, you aren't stuck with carrier bloatware and can nuke it. For now, an unlocked bootloader means only that we have de-bloated and tweaked variants of the stock ROM, however down the line, we can expect:
1) If another carrier (such as Rogers) releases an update AT&T doesn't, it can be used as a base for ROMs for our AT&T phones. Example - it's rumored the Canadians will get Gingerbread for the Infuse first.
2) Eventually with Infuses in the right dev's hands, we'll see AOSP or the Cyanogenmod source tree targeted at our device. Once that's the case, we'll likely track the latest and greatest Android versions with little delay.
You will never see either of 1 or 2 with an Atrix.
Also if you search the threads you will see a lot of people who came from the atrix and say this is not only a better phone, but faster
I dunno guys - it's looking more and more like the next Atrix OTA is going to have a bootloader unlock and if that really happens then I'm really going to regret leaving the Atrix behind for the Infuse.
Both are great devices. To make your decision ask yourself one question: What is more important to me? A device that works or a device I can customize to the max.
I think that'll help you make a firm decision.
I had the Atrix for almost 30 days. I rooted it on day 1. I loved the long lasting battery cause I use the hell out of my phone. That battery would easily last me a full day! From 8:15 am till around 20% left before I went to bed at 2 am lol the phone would lag once in a while though and people had a hard time hearing me when I spoke on the phone. So I returned it.
The Infuse is sweet so far! Also rooted on day 1. Just wish it had a battery similar to the Atrix and a dual core processor. Everything else is great as is!

From what I've read, the infuse is actually faster than the atrix. Even though the infuse has a 1.2 GHz single core and the atrix a 1GHz running at 2 cores, the infuse is faster since android is only being loaded on a single core for the atrix and to my knowledge, there arent any apps on the market that are able to multi-thread. I may be wrong but that's what I have seen. Also, the hummingbird processor on the infuse can decode(and hopefully encode with the gingerbread update) full HD faster than the atrix's tegra. I have also read that the atrix has some problems with overheating but I may be wrong. The infuse is a pretty good phone, granted the Touch Wiz UI is not as friendly as Sense UI, it is a hella lot better than Motoblur. For the battery life, the infuse is very good and lasting, i don't know about the atrix though. The screen on the infuse is just killer and has AMAZING colors, its basically a pocketable 4.5 inch 1080p HDTV, while the atrix is a smaller sceen(4 inch) phone with qHD display. I believe the infuse's screen is better though because its a SAMOLED(super active matrix organic light emiting diode) screen which eliminates some screen filters that normal LEDs, LCDs and TFTs have, making the colors wonderful. The atrix's qHD display does have 24bit color but i think that it comes short to the infuse. Hope you choose the infuse though. The possible gingerbread update will make it far more superior to most known phones. You wouldn't have buyers remorse
Hopefully I can help a little as I currently use "both" devices. They each have their pros and cons and it really tailors to what you "need" in a smartphone.
Keep in mind I am going from my perspective as a power user, display is off and phone not running some sort of app in the course of 12 hours for maybe 2 hours total.
The atrix succeeds in battery life, 7am to 7pm I still hold about 15-20%, infuse is being charged at that time, actually usually an hour before.
Atrix has better gps lock speed, I definitely rely on it more for road trips, although I have an issue where the gps and google nav use more power that what my cla replenishes "look into it if this is important to you"
Screen goes to the infuse hands down, people say oh qHD is more this and that, Super amoled plus is more this and that, well guess what. When I look at my infuse and turn on a video, I feel like im looking through a window into a little 4.5in world, its amazing
Considering almost ALL of us root, change, configure and who knows what else to personal our device I wouldn't listen to all the motoblur sucks, sense suck, tw sucks folks out there. Both of my phones look exactly the same and although the atrix should be faster the only time I see it win is when loading certain apps, other than that they are damn close so if phone speed is a concern, you can enjoy either one.
The Atrix is definitely LOUDER!! I tend to miss calls here and there with my infuse in the pocket and im outside, never miss a beat with the atrix, wtg moto. Reminds me of the old loud razor.
Screen real estate was a must for me for editing files so that was my win for the infuse, I love the large responsive display. It may only be .5 in but it makes a difference trust me
All in all they are both great devices and worthy of use. The atrix definitely wins in the poweruser world for its trusty gps, louder ringer (people don't like if you miss their call ) and longer battery life
for the entertainment or social user I would say infuse all the way, much much much better camera, larger display, more crisp, light, great size for web browsing, social networking, or just about anything. It has some things it lacks as mentioned but if those are not deal breakers than the infuse is definitely more FUN to own.
PS: They both run games exceptionally well and I have yet to see a hiccup during gameplay that actually affected me while playing.
Well, the Atrix bootloader was unlocked last night. So, we now have Gingerbread on our phones!
Infuse has
Better camera than the Atrix
far better screen
better stock software
Atrix has
better accessories
better feel/build quality
theoretically faster specs (although it doesn't translate to reality at this point)
probably better development now that it's unlocked as well, motorola devices seem to be easier to develop for than Samsung ?

I disagree on that - if the stock UI sucks and the manufacturer has gone through measures to make you unable to change it, then it's a severe liability.
Motoblur sucks and on most Motorola phones, you have no choice. Apparently that may be changing/have changed as of last night for the Atrix, but I still don't trust Motorola. The arrogance of some of the things they've said to the public is inexcusable.

buying a sidekick 4g, any thoughts?

Am going to pick up a SK4G in a little bit and was wondering from our community the general conscensus on how you guys feel about it?
I'm coming from a MT4G, which I am extremely happy with, the way I have it set-up. Any one also have both and maybe a comparison? (not the obvious of course like "the screen is smaller", etc., I've been around a bit, I know a tad about a couple things =] )
I've noticed it doesnt have as crazy as a following as some of the other androids, but that doesnt mean theres no good development going on!
Let me know if you dont mind.
I came from the mt3gs and a VM optimus v afterwards. I wanted the mt4g for the specs. But I couldn't do all touch typing. I found keyboards to help. But it's just not the same as a physical qwerty.
I'm the kind of guy who likes to buy phone 2-4x a year. Maybe not the kings of the hill. But mid to high range phones. Of course, it's expensive to do so. I decided to get a phone to last a whole two-year contract. I opted for the s4g. I was due for an upgrade and even waited until launch date for this over a g2 or mt4g.
What won me was obviously the keyboard. You don't see too many 5-rows available. Spec-wise, this phone is just average. Camera dept. is really lacking. Only 3mp. But lack of led flash was the killer. Still, the keyboard was winner. The physical design is nice. I especially liked the sliding mechanism. Half-phone sliders, like the mt3gs, just feel faulty and flimsy. You could pull the halves apart or slide past the closing stop point. Not that an average person would. But I like to conduct stress tests. This mechanism is sturdy. People have dropped plenty times and claim the mechanism is just as sturdy as it was at purchase.
Also, the screen tilt really makes a difference. Using my mt3gs after this makes it really apparent. It makes using a non-tilt screen really hard to adjust back to.
The phone does come with some bugs and issues, which you can read through the forums (I have a thread over at tmo forums and adroid central entitled "bug report and other issues".) However, rooting and getting custom rom Smooth Maximus GingerClone will make the phone a new phone. The speed is fast and lag hardy present. Only minute issues still remain, yet to be resolved.
Overall, especially if you need a physical keyboard, I would suggest this phone. It is highly recommended you get Smooth Maximus for its best value. If all-touch phones didn't bother me I would go for a mt4g, g2, or wait for the mt4gs. But for you, as a backup phone this is an awesome investment. I would wait for the mt4gs, though, just for its specs and future android development.
I would say don't. You will miss the MT4G. I did the same thing Saturday night. I got rid of it last night. The phone has a nice keyboard and stuff... but the performance of the phone lacks! I mean it has a 1ghz processor and all, but its nowhere near fast as a vibrant.
I would say don't. Because you will be disappointed. If you want a keyboard get the G2 or wait for the myTouch 4G Slide.
3 days after I got the SK4G I traded it immediately and got a Nexus S instead. That phone wouldn't send or receive texts and it also wouldn't call or receive calls until I restarted. But that might have been wifi callings issue though. And if you browse the web a lot then this is not your device since the screen is so small. The only thing I liked about the phone was Cloud Text and the phenomenal keyboard. Although, as all Samsung slider keyboards do, it tends to once in a while not register a key when typing.
The quality of the SK also lacks significantly compared to the myTouch....
Just my 2 cents.

Listen , you should do a bit research before posting in this thread imo .
It's a 1GHz of course it lack's performance , the Galaxy & SK4G have the same processor & gut's & once you install a custom kernel & ROM you will be fine , there is no Wifi Calling issue & browsing the web is fine , Cloud Text & the keyboard is amazing .
I don't wanna be bias so I'll give my honest opinion. If you are a power user, don't get this phone. Though it runs a lot more smoothly on a custom root setup, it still has tiny lag, as enoch pointed out it doesn't register all button keyboard presses. The only reason you should get the sk4g is for the keyboard alone. If not then a more powerful phone may satisfy your needs.
If you are a power user, don't get this phone. If you're getting a phone just cause, you can consider this. I love the phone and haven't put it down since. But if this is a main phone for two years on contract, you can get something better.
Lol, I don't mean to contradict my earlier post. I'm not as bias with this one.
i would recommend the sk4g. coming from all-touch smartphones like the nexus one and hd2 running android and the hd7, i am happy with the sidekick 4g. i generally avoided android phones with qwerty keyboards because most are sliders and i hate phones with too much movement.
the droid pro was my dream form factor for an android phone but since i am happy with tmo there was no way i would switch to verizon just for that phone. plus the resolution on the droid pros smaller screen was a turnoff.
the slider on the sidekick 4g is pretty sturdy. the keyboard is awesome. i use my phone a lot for business and the sidekick 4g was the last smartphone on my list. but after comparing to other qwerty androids out there the skg4 seemed to be one of the better.
the camera is only 3m and no led flash. but the quality of the pictures is pretty good for being 3m. depending on what rom i had on my hd2, the sk4g's cam took pics just as good.
the speakerphone is pretty good. better than any htc ive had.(g1, mytouch 3g, hd2, hd7, nexus one).
even though its mostly made of plastic, its pretty durable and not as 'cheap' feeling as some claim it to be. i actually think its one of the more better built phones ive had(besides the hd2).
as for performance, even though it has the same 1GHz hummingbird processor as the galaxy s, tab, etc... it doesnt feel as smooth. most of the lag can be noticed while unlocking, navigating through any custom ui, and switching back to home screen from some apps. but once you are inside of an app it feels just as smooth and snappy as other 1GHz smartphones.
if i were you i'd probably wait until the mytouch 4g slide comes out.. its not too long. im not really digging the mytouch4g/slide's front looks and not liking how the touchscreen is fully exposed on all sides as opposed to the sk4g's screen/slider is protected on two sides.
I know my phones. I know it technically has the same guts as any Galaxy S phone. But I can tell you any Galaxy S phone feels so much more faster than this phone does. I mean I was shocked that the phone didn't perform like a 1ghz device should! I did install Bali with voodoo enabled and that didn't make much difference. While on the vibrant the difference was almost night and day.
And yes I pointed out that Cloud Text and the keyboard are Amazing!
But the phone is just sluggish.
If he is a power user, he needs to look elsewhere because this phone won't suffice your need of power. I mean I found my self restarting the phone every few hours while on my myTouch 4G I never had to restart.
Another thing I should also point out is that battery life isn't the greatest. The phone wasn't lasting me even 8 hours a day (I'm more of a power user). While the myTouch would last me 22+ hours on the Virtuous Unity ROM or 18+ hours on stock. The phone with a keyboard that lasted the longest that I ever owned (android) was the G2 I was getting a solid 36+ hours of use. It was Stunning!!
My suggestion would be wait a few weeks and you can get the myTouch 4G Slide.

I would recommend this phone if you are a hardcore qwerty user like myself. I came from the MT4G and I got this phone through craigslist and I have been satisfied. Is it a high end phone? Maybe if this came out last summer but it does not stop this from being a good phone. Even though the development is not as great as other phones ( I do appreciate the support!) There is not much wrong with this phone. 3 MP is weak for a camera nowadays but it does its job. Is the phone sluggish at times? Sometimes but with the gingerclone rom and bali kernal it has decreased. With more roms in kernals in the future it should change indeed. As for the battery I let the battery die and let it charge completely and no lie got 24+ hours of battery life which consisted of playing Chrono Trigger on my phone (keyboard controller ftw) but as everyone else has been saying if you want value and a 5 row keyboard then sk4g, if you wanna throw some more money and wanna be that suave guy with a fancy phone then please get the mt4gs and tell me how it is ;-)

most people who are all hardcore with buying the latest and greatest may disagree. My point of contention is, when your a guy like me who has to keep up with multiple females at any given moment there is no better phone. Simply put, *****es love texting. The only competition we have as far as touch screen texting is the Droid boomerang. I forget the model designation but the thing is ****ing retarded huge. Next up we have the blackberry, but the closed source OS was the major boner killer for me.
With all that said, if you **** *****es, like lots of *****es. There is no better phone. All the other ************s struggle to keep up. I don't know how, but all the females I know get at least 45 WPM out of those ****ing dinosaur Nokia bricks. I can't do that ****, but I do know that with a SK4G I can get 45 WPM+ with nearly 100% accuracy.

Looking for general feedback/considering buying a Charge

I'm months overdue from getting rid of my Touch Pro 2, and the Charge is one of my top contenders. I was holding out for the Bionic (or rumored Verizon Nexus S), but after researching the X2 and Droid 3 and seeing the Dev community having issues achieving root, I'm now leaning back towards the current single core LTE handsets.
The brief time I've spent looking around, it looks like the battery life is great considering the usual LTE excess drain. Obviously the phone is rootable, there are kernels and roms available, and the dev community seems to be very active with the phone in general.
I haven't specifically seen any mention of overclock ability or "stealth" tethering, but I would have to assume these are all doable considering the kernel and rom availability.
If anybody wouldn't mind sharing some general feedback, I would greatly appreciate it!
* In general, how happy have you been with your Charge, and why?
* Why did you choose it over, say, the LG Revolution?
* Anyone unhappy with their decision to go with the Charge (after-the-fact) over something else, and if so, why?
Thanks again in advance for any comments, they would be much appreciated!
Cheers!
I like my charge. I also came from a TP2 like you. The battery life is decent but the 4g is awesome to have. It flies. I use stealth tethering via wireless tether for root users. The dev community is very active. The main issues I have are bluetooth related. I often have to reboot before I get into my car so I know there will not be bluetooth disconnects. Now that netflix is available I like the phone even more. Also I love swype.
Good luck and smart idea asking the questions that you are asking.
Sent from my VZW SGT running a Gingerbread Sprint Rom
I came to the Charge from the Revolution. I liked the feel of the Revo, it was heavier, felt solid and well made and it was also a much faster phone than the charge out of the box giving me Quadrants in 2k to 22k range. On 4g Speed tests the Charge is faster.
But when I had two Revolutions brick themselves so hard that I could not get into a factory reset, nor anything else in the space of 30 days I had VZW upgrade me to the Charge.
So far the Charge has beena pretty decent phone (considering I've rooted and ROMed it.) Stock I hated it.
I'm using Humble 1.42 as my ROM and I'm happy so far.
Time to upgrade buddy. Humble 1.51 is sick.

Others don't; each to his own. Battery life seems at least as good as any other Android phone; I can get 9-12 hours, which is all I need, unless I'm in a fringe reception area.
* Why did you choose it over, say, the LG Revolution? LG phones generally seem to be more troublesome from what I've read. Plus the screen is greatly inferior.

Sorry for quoting this long, its hard to look back at posts on your phone. I came from an LG Versa. That phone was complete ****, but I was 13 or 14 and something appealed to me. This is my upgrade. I love it, except for the battery life. We have 2 main custom roms, GummyCharged and Eclipse. (Humble is just a spinoff/kang of GC), and 2-3 kernels - PeanutButtaJellyTime (plus an OC edition, you mentioned you didn't see it), Nameless, and imoseyon's kernel, which you will only find on his Twitter page. "Stealth Tethering" is still available with Wifi Tether Beta3 on Google Code. I chose this over the Tbolt and Revolution because a verizon rep told me this was the 4G phone with the least issues and most positive customer feedback, plus I thought this one had the most support from XDA (the tbolt has a lot too though). My only peeve with this phone is its lack of support from Samsung. We basically have to do everything ourselves because Sammy hasn't given us good source. We don't get TW4 (although we have our attempts at porting it), and GB is FINALLY almost here. The Wolfson DAC is amazing, but the GPS (Yamaha?) leaves something to be desired. But in closing, I love this phone and im glad I got it.

kvswim, thanks VERY much for that! Quick question, though (or for anyone else), not actually having an Android phone yet, I have no idea what TW4 or DAC means.
Great to know OC is an option, as well as stealth tethering.
Also appreciate the scoop on the different flavors of roms/kernels/etc.
If I end up going with this phone (which is now far ahead in the lead), that will be the first thing I do upon opening up the box.
Thanks again!

TW4=TouchWiz 4, Sammy's 4th generation of their UI overlay, similar to HTC's Sense or Motorola's Motoblur. We have TW3. Also, the stock theming is HIDEOUS. Poop color EVERYWHERE.
The Wolfson DAC is the audio chipset in most (all?) Samsung Galaxy phones. It is amazing compared to other phones, it's audiophile quality. Plus the EQ and amplifier outputs can be modified with the Voodoo Control app (you can also change Voodoo lagfix in it).
PROTIP on selecting ROMS: If you like the stock feel go with Eclipse. If you like more of an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) feel, use GC. I highly reccommend trying both and seeing what you like more. Also, as of now, Gingerbread is completely up to you, as all we have in GB are leaks and no source (its completely unnoficial). Our Froyo builds are built from official ROMS and source.
Oh yes, we have stuff like MIUI and CM7 and OMFGB in development. Protip: NEVER ask for ETAs.
Sent from my Droid Charge running GummyFroyo 1.9.1
Gotcha, thanks. I do have a Xoom, but considering that's on Honeycomb, I didn't think there would be any relation between it and any phone.
When you said DAC the only thing that came to mind was digital to analog converter, but I didn't think that would be it. Guess I was wrong! That's another huge plus as my phone is always my mp3/flac player.
Will definitely check out all roms if/once I get the phone.
At this point I'm pretty much sold on the Charge as opposed to the Revo or TB, and even the Bionic. However, I am wondering if it's worth waiting a couple weeks until the rumored September release date for the Bionic to see if the price points fall. All things being equal, they should.
Again, thanks for all the help!
I got my charge 2 days ago...via a sweet craigslist deal. Anyways, I'm coming from the THunderbolt. I still haven't rooted the phone yet but the tbolt was perma rooted running a GB rom. Now I know you said LG rev but I'm going to go on a little rant here based on my initial thoughts.
I gotta say, I think the charge is an underrated phone. So far the battery life on the charge is DESTROYING the thunderbolt. The real test will be tomorrow when I'm at work with a poor data signal. I think the phone itself looks great, it is much better in person than you see in pictures. In pictures it looks fat and weird, I think its pretty sleek for a 4.3" LTE phone. Nice metal accents, good form factor, I could've done without the android hardkeys, but I don't mind them.
Samsung phones get knocked for build quality, but my galaxy s when I was on tmobile took a ton of abuse, the screen never scratched and even the "metal" accent trims don't scratch much. Also, I personally like the lighter weight feel of the samsung phones (galaxy, nexus, charge, etc).
Take that in comparison with HTC phones and the thunderbolt... I seroiusly don't know what kind of HTC koolaid people drink but I've never been impressed. The thunderbolt's screen is NOT very scratch resistant, the kickstand peel reaked of sh*t quality, I ended up polishing mine. When I had my nexus one, the power button felt like crap. When I had my HD7, the battery cover squeaked like hell. Like I said, I don't get how HTC gets so much credit.
Moving on to slam HTC more, if you ask me, HTC sense sucks, its so intrusive and blocky to me. Maybe I'm in the minority there but I'm sick of the stupid HTC clock widget, the menus, etc, just isn't my thing I guess. Lets not to mention the messages app in the thunderbolt freezing ALOT. Of course I ditched sense with the AOSP rom I was running but still, initial frustration. People give touchwiz heat, but I really don't mind it.
Reception - I'm getting FAR better 4g connectivity with the charge. I don't know what was up with my tbolt but once I'd drop to 3g or 1x, I could never get back to 4g unless I rebooted. Multiple radios - same issue.
Finally, the screen. Sorry but one of the most rewarding things with a phone is the screen, every time you turn it on, you obviously see it, and with the charge, thats a good thing because the super amoled plus is just excellent. Destroys the thunderbolt and most other phones in general.
Forget quadrant scores (people get wayyyy hung up on QS), dual cores, everything else. At the end of the day, if the aesthetics of the phone are good - size, weight, pocketability, the screen, the device is snappy (and the charge is smooth for me in stock form), and battery life is good, I'm gonna be happy. With all those things into account, I think the charge is a great phone so far and I'm really surprised its kind of slid under the radar and not given credit because people are waiting for the bionic and gs2.
Sorry to do tbolt vs charge since thats not what you're looking for, but as far as general feedback - I think you're going to be happy with the charge, its quite honestly a very nice phone. I'm glad I gave another LTE phone a chance before I lost faith in it.
Thanks Dale, I actually do appreciate the TBolt comparison. It was originally my #1 or #2 pick, so this reaffirms that it is rightfully at the bottom of my list.
It just hit me that Super AMOLED is probably the same as SAMOLED. I saw another article (about a completely different phone, actually) that was raving about SAMOLED. Good to have some additional confirmation on that.
I was originally hung up on Quadrant scores and having that dual core. However, after I thought about it, I'm really not sure how important it is considering what I would use the phone for. I have my Xoom, and that is my real "mobile workhorse" now, so that's the device that I'm more concerned about performance on. The phone will primarily be for web browsing, work e-mail, music, tethering, and that's pretty much it. Any other heavy lifting would probably be done by the Xoom. All that being said, I've pretty much convinced myself I won't miss not having the second core. Plus, I'm sure the battery life is better with only 1 core versus 2.
I'm actually pretty stoked after reading all of this feedback, especially the feedback from people who had another LTE phone. I feel good about going with this phone in the very near future.
Again, thanks to all!

"Super AMOLED" and "SAMOLED" are the same thing, however the Charges' screen is SAMOLED+ But yeah I think it was pretty solid upgrade for me, I love the screen, 4G is blazing fast, build quality and durability are pretty decent and the included 32gb sd card is plenty of room for music, videos and apps

Dude...
Don't get the Charge.
While it's very true there will alwaya be devices that outperform * it'a safe to say the Charge seemed rushed from development to market probably because they were tapped to do so because of either HTC or Motk dropped the ball...
While rooting can solve the much outdated 2.2 joke made at our expense and even though many people have been forced to look at a front face camera (that takes back assward pics no less) and that isn't working across the board for many video chat users....you are forced to deal with an unrecoverable error such as the laughable RAM, arguably necessity of a notifcation LED, and ****ty build quality Samsung (in this device) exemplifies times 10.
Wait and be patient is the best intelligent decision considering the norm will (soon) be:
4.3-4.5 screen (hd res)
1gb of RAM
16gb internal storage
Up to date operating systems...
That said, I enjoy and dislike my Charge.
It's better than my O.G. DROID.
It takes THE best pictures and video of any phone Verizon offers...period.
Do I enjoy the squeaky hard buttons?
Do I like seeing particles of dust (a la bb storm 9530) ?
Do I enjoy ****ty plastic that easily scratches?
Nope.

For what it's worth, running overclocked and undervolted on Froyo Eclipse, my Quadrant scores were 1800-1900, which was about double the original score. Not the best but not terrible. Still had solid battery life, great stability, etc. Definitely glad I got this phone, but that's mainly because I rooted it and fixed so many of the things I didn't like originally. Playing on the EP1Q GummyCharged GBE ROM now and still loving it, just get to use the FFC for video chat.
Honestly, yes there will be VZW devices that out-spec it soon, but I've not found it lacking anything (that couldn't be fixed thanks to the dev community). Very happy with it.
You have the Motorola Bionic and the Galaxy S2 dropping within the month, I'd hold out. Not to say that the Droid Charge isn't good, but, those phones are going to be right around the same price and will smoke the Charge in performance.
The Droid Charge isn't that great. I only got it because I needed something to get in on Unlimited data and the Charge was supposed to get better battery life than the other two LTE phones.
First, the battery life is just OK. Only around 4-5 hours of music streaming.
Second, the 4G reception is incredibly spotty. The phone will drop to 3G for seemingly no reason. Sometimes data cuts out completely or goes to 1x (this is a widespread problem).
Like other Galaxy S phones, this has GPS issues. Sometimes GPS will stop working until you reboot the phones. I've never seen it reports an accuracy of more than 5 meters.
Even after trying the GPS fix posted in the other topic, I was only getting 10-18m accuracy outside with 7-9 satellites in view.
The Super AMOLED+ screen is pretty much amazing though.
It seems like Samsung is decent at hardware but bad at software. And there aren't any ROMs available here that aren't based on Samsung software.
I'd at least wait and see about the Bionic or Nexus Prime.

1) I'm VERY happy with my Charge. It's probably because this was my first smartphone but I'm simply blown away by it. Especially considering we have Cyanogen & OMGB/OMFGB coming our way(in-fact, they just got CM working! Not finished, but it's a start)
2) I looked at all the phones that were out and coming out and decided on the Charge. I didn't look into the dev support for other phones I was just looking at specs/reviews to make my decision.
3) Lets get this straight, I am in no way unhappy with my Charge and did not "settle" when picking this phone but in all honesty the Prime/GalaxyS2/Bionic look great and if they were released at the time of me picking out a phone I would have gotten them in that order. Only downside to this phone is the fact that it's not on GB and most likely won't ever get TW4. If you can get around that you'll love this phone. Also, once you see the screen you will never go back to a non Amoled, qHD ain't got **** on this baby!
My wife an I both got charges a couple of months ago. I am rooted and she is stock. When I pick up her phone and mess around with it, I absolutely hate it. I love mine (gummy charged). I don't know how people can use this phone stock.

Worst phone in my entire life

This is hands down the worst phone that I have ever owned in my entire life. There are tons of
1) Biggest problem is definitely the home button. This alone makes the phone totally unusable. Want to use the GPS while driving? Well forget about cause you are going to get in to a car crash trying to set everything right with this home button thing going on.
2) randomly says I don't have a sim card while I haven't touch my simcard at all. And I only find out about this when I check my phone and by then I could have been unavailable for a couple hours. Well whats the point of a mobile phone then if you aren't always available. This is btw not a rom issue
3) Battery. I never get more then 1-2 hours of screen time on a 14 hour stretch. The iphone 5 gets 8 hours of browsing time.
4) Can't hear my phone ringing while out in public. The speaker is just pathetic.
5) paint problem of the black htc one s. Come on man. In the end I just sanded everything down. But that makes those cheap plastic bits stand out. Not to mention all the dust and gunk thats building up around and under these plastic bits. I can't see the LED light either unless I am viewing it directly from above. The design just isn't there. Although samsung isn't better either in that department. But the iphone just does it right.
7) Rom development sucks but I have no choice because sense sucks even harder.
It is unbelievable that HTC just can't get the elementary things right. My phone is totally unusable and it has been a miracle that I have surved this past 5 months on this POS. HTC lost a customer. I wasted 500 euro on this POS.
Sorry for thay. So what phone u got now?

Well I am probably going to get the iphone 5. Which I actually don't really want to do because its just expensive and its not really going to be a major upgrade compared to the HTC one S in terms of speed and the apps I use and even the screen.
But what choice do I have?
Well since i love Samsung i suggest u choose Samsung Galaxy Note 2 or SIII... Its less than the iPhone 5 but more function... Since u mention function.... These phone are the best... Well if u like iPhone application then choose iPhone.. But i suggest Samsung SIII or Galaxy Note2
Sent from my Galaxy SII 4G LTE GT-I9210T using xda premium
You give of about the black model chipping etc. well the iphone 5 is no better, has the exact same problem, in fact probably worse.
I have not encountered any of those issues that you have mentioned, my black phone (older design) is still in perfect condition apart from the USB port area, easily the best battery life currently (4-6 hours on screen time [manual control] spread across 1-3 days usually), only phone to top it is the iphone 5, although iOS does no more as much as android i.e. the multi-tasking and the hardware is more power efficient and the software/drivers are better optimized.
I do agree with you on the NLED though.
EDIT:
Just noticed who the OP is........ *sigh*
Move onto the iphone already for god sake, you moan and moan and moan about the phone all the time and keep going on about how iphone better etc. as I told you before sell the one S and get yourself an iphone, such a simple solution........
BTW, fed up with the ROM development? Then educate yourself and you go and make a better ROM then!
TBH starting to think you are just one big troll.
Oh god not you again.
Sell your phone and get an iPhone. It's clear you're an iSheep so flock with the crowd.
You have opened numerous threads, moaning and complaining your iPhone is better, so for the better good of the earth, save yourself the typing and get an iPhone.

I have also not encountered any of these problems. In fact, i'd say the HTC one S is the best phone ive ever owned. I find android superior to ios in many ways. Just my opinion.
Soo if you're disappointed with the development on the 1S, wait until you see how many options you have with the iPhone .
I personally have never had any of those issues, and while I come from an HD2 which probably had the most rom options of any phone, I find that we at least have quality over quantity. TrickDroid, Viper, Energy, and oh a little thing called OFFICIAL CM10! Thanks I'll subdue my flashaholic ways of the past for a great stable Rom with lots of cool features.

Jesus man. The fanboyism here is super high. You guys are in denial.
And I can show thousands of pictures of my battery life. I can show you tons of threads about issues that people have with this phone. The home button thing is a major issue and you guys are denying that. Unbelievable.
This is not about android vs ios. Android JB is superior to iOS6 except in the gaming department. But none of these manufacturers can make a decent phone. SGS3? Great specs but its still a cheap plastic toy phone. Even if I was into plastic I'd still don't know how well the user experience is. Thats one thing I have learned from using the One S. Even though the one S is infinitely faster than my old iphone4. The iphone is still the superior phone. Its in the small details.
Battery life, volume of speakers, volume of headphone jack, bugs in software, battery charging time, unibody design, support. The user experience is everything and quad core means nothing. Especially not with this generation of phones where nowadays everything is blazing fast anyway
Go away troll!
no one is being a fanboy, we are just fed up with your stupid BS you keep spreading every month in a new thread despite being proven wrong with many people saying they don't have these problems.........
You experience these issues with some others, however, once again just because you and some other people experience these issues does not mean that everyone also has the same problems. People only ever report the bad stuff, hardly ever the good stuff.
I can show you videos, photos of my mobile (and I already have shown you plenty of battery screenshots with detailed usage), but it doesn't matter because you will still go on and on about how this phone sucks, how iphone is better blah blah, followed by more diarrhea from your mouth.
I have no problem with battery, touch button issue, volume/speakers/headphones (get better headphones!), what bugs in the software? My signal is more or less perfect as well as wifi connection, unibody design as I said no marks on mine apart from USB port.
Once again, why do you not sell the one S, all you do is moan and complain about it, sell and buy something else? Why is that so hard to do?
BTW do you honestly think people would keep a phone if they experienced that touch button issue? No matter how much of a fanboy someone is, they won't put up with that ****. I for one wouldn't so why would be denying this issue as well as the others?
You don't like the support, then you do something to improve it or better yet, move to a phone that has got better support i.e. nexus, GS 3 etc.

"The user experience is everything and quad core means nothing." Troll much? I don't own a One S but i saw this post as i was scrolling down to the One X section and i must say you are a pathetic troll, as far as i know only the One S has a dual core Krait, the one with the quad core is the One X and i believe someone who is at XDA and knows about Custom Roms at least know what processor their phone has.
I can't stop checking this thread. It's like slowing down on the freeway to see a car accident. I have never, in my life, hated a product so much that I just vent and vent and vent without doing something about it. Based on my recent experience as a new parent, I'd say someone needs a new diaper, a nap and a nice shiny anodized (please ignore the chips and dents) iPhone pacifier.

Haha I recently purchased the HOS but I definitely do not have any of the issues mentioned on the forum.
I mean okay, in reality, if people are content with their product, they usually won't need to ask questions or post help threads until necessary which is when their phone malfunctions or encounters a problem. So I'm guessing there are actually more happy owners out there in comparison with owners with issues.
AND. although I wish the development on this phone was better, I can't really complain as it has everything I both need or want (well battery life can always be better).

I wasn't talking about the ONE S! I mentioned quad cores cause that sounds infinitely more next gen and awesome and futuristic then a measly dual core. It was to make a point. CPUs nowadays don't matter cause I can't tell the difference between the last gen CPU's (Nexus S, iphone4s) and current CPU's (a6, s4 krait, quad cores from nvidea and samsung) in day to day usages.
Where did I say that the One S has a quad core? You just went full retard!

Yea most of the complainers are really just a small bunch compared to the ones who actually are content, I only rooted mine out of boredom (boredom in life not with the phone lol) otherwise I would've been fine with it out of the box, why? Because mine had no problems, all the problems came after flashing roms and what not but that risk I was willing to take and I'm still left with a flawless device

[Q] thinking about getting the razr hd .

i currently have a droid x2. and while i would like to say that i could wait until the x-phone comes out, or the htc one comes out. i just cant stand having a non-functional phone anymore.
my question is:
do you guys think this phone is worth upgrading to ?
does development seem to be growing since unlock? ( does future development seem likely?) ( 5.0+ ? )
should i consider going with a galaxy device? (s3 or s4) i am kind of indifferent towards these plasticy devices.
i like motorola a lot. their build quality is fantastic. but i am not sure how i feel about a non removable battery (essentially limiting the life of the phone) , or the slightly outdated specs.
just looking for some users two cents on the topic. thanks guys.

I love this phone....battery life of course is phenomenal and I've yet to hear of anyone's battery crapping out on them. I've had mine now for several months and I think I've used my car charger maybe once. And thats only because I didnt charge my phone the night before.
The whole S4 oct-core plasticky phone's are outright redonkulous. The 1.5 ghz dual core is all you really need.
As far as development, since the unlock, it's skyrocketed. And its just in its infancy. Hashcode already has a new Kernel up for review as we speak. Once Cynaogenmod approves, we'll get official support and the development will be on par with the rest of the other top tier devices.

I've owned many a phone, from the first Android with the G1 to the RAZR HD and I have honestly never had a more fast, stable and force close free phone. This device is truly amazing and the battery life is flipping incredible. My wife has an S3 and it's okay but I would definitely rather own this one over that.
Development has exploded, as of right now I am running the following Rom. Perfection... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293262

thank you sir. ! this helped a lot. its good to hear from someone who has seen both phones firsthand.
do you ever feel like the one gig of ram is not enough?

You're welcome mate. The 1 GB of Ram is more than enough for my needs. I can have a lot of different apps running and never notice it sluggish or falling behind. I've seen a article or two mentioning that the camera isn't all that great and I can agree just a bit.
Only negatives are the non removable battery and the camera quality. All else is top notch.

Similar decision
I figured I'd post this for anybody else considering the RAZR HD.
.
I first used the original DX for two years before switching to the HD.
Here's my opinion:
Pros:
- Great battery. HD is good. MAXX is unbelievable
- Comfortable to use. Not too large, not too small, and a pleasure to operate.
- Removable storage
Cons:
- VERIZON. nuff said
- RAM used up fairly quickly.
- No removable battery (bad)
- NFC works fine, but the big V won't allow its customers to use Wallet
- Sound is meh.
- No OFFICIAL Cyanogenmod 10.1
- Unlocked bootloader = AP Fastboot EVERY power down AND you mustn't allow the battery to die with an unlocked bootloader.
I certainly love my HD more than the DX, but unless the X phone is amazing, I'm leaving Motorola.
I never see the fastboot screen unless I do it on purpose. And I've had my phone die quite a few times with no issues..

I must say that I truly love this phone. seems snappy and honestly no issues. I am going to venture into flashing my first ROM tonight when I get off of work. I had a gnex, which had a ton of support. I didn't like it so I traded it in for the rezound. It had way less support, but the devs were awesome! I bought this phone on CL and I must say it has even less development. That is my only concern about this phone. I would hope that the unlocked boot loader would bring on more devs, but coming from an OG, to the X, it appears the devs are not feeling the moto love.. If I had the money Id buy my favorite devs this phone. I think they would love it..

AP Fastboot every time can either be a Sticky Bit error (from not tweaking a fastboot's xml file before flashing with RSD) or just a bad flash somewhere in general. Ensure you're using the snapdragon fastboots located in Mattlgroffs section on the Batakang FTP whenever you're doing any kind of fastboot flashing on any RAZR QCOM phone -- Atrix HD, all RAZR HD variants, both Phonton Q 4G LTE's.
Reality check...
OK, so I've been through a LOT of Android devices, and this one has some poo that goes along with it (as many others have).
1. The radios have become worse over the generations. While LTE is technically faster now on this device, I had WAY more coverage on my POS Revolution, but this device smokes the Galaxy Nexus for LTE coverage hands down (SGN is a joke as an LTE device).
2. Phone is mediocre. This is where the SGN showed what it was supposed to really sound like on a phone. On a call to my dad, he stated in my car that it sounded like I was in a quiet room by myself. He definitely doesn't say that with this phone.
3. Gaming. This one irritates me the most. Every few minutes there is lag. Sometimes it's short lag, sometimes you drop to 5fps for 6-7 seconds. Try Subway Surfers - you'll want to chuck the phone at the wall. I'm guessing this is an IO issue as I saw this in the TF300, and whatever CleanROM did for the TF300, it made the term "buttery smooth" no longer tongue and cheek. I'd give anything (except stability and features) to see that on this phone.
4. ROMs - I can't comment on this one, but I've been following the threads for a while now, and there's still some dealbreaker trade-offs going on - hopefully we'll see less of that as time goes on (great improvements over just the past few weeks). I've been waiting for the right time to make the move.
5. Tethering - Interesting that less people have seem interested in this problem, but as an unlimited user, I have found NO possible way around VZW. I'm rooted and have tried WiFi tether in the configurations people have suggested in multiple forums with no luck. I've tried the SQL hacks, I've tried other programs, I've tried WFT 3.2b, I've tried every configuration you can think of. The best I have had was a connection, but no internet. Every thread suggests something, but from my experience, nothing works.
6. A little lag in Nova Launcher when waking up and switching between screens.
7. VZW and Motorola seem more interested in blocking the devs from cleaning up Moto's mess than fixing their own crap. With the Ultra coming out, I figure that they'll block it from devs the best they can with a few more updates, then jump ship to create a shinier turd and repeat the cycle.
8. Browsing is still slow, even on WiFi, but show me a phone where this isn't true?
The pros?
1. Battery life. This is hands down the best phone I've had for battery, and it's only the HD, not the Maxx.
2. Better LTE than an SGN? LOL...
3. Depending on your usage, it's a decent phone I guess. It's ok in between downright irritating lagging for games(laugh), the WiFi works, albeit a little slow in areas, it's average as a phone, and if you're just interested in checking your e-mail and doing navigation, it's not bad.
4. Decent built in storage space stock.
5. Pretty good sound - no complaints on the music front.
Just don't EXPECT tethering, or a decent, lag-free gaming experience.
I either have a knack for choosing bad phones, or Android just STILL isn't there in the phone arena yet, even with the greater specs. If the former is true, I wouldn't follow my devices (minus the TF300 - that was excellent with CleanROM).
I paid in cash, and if I had to do it all over again, I have no idea what I'd do... I'm starting to believe that the big V along with these manufacturers, they are just slapping coats of wax on turds, then high tailing off to put the next, bigger, and shinier turd in front of people. There's no pride put into the devices past the marketing strategy. I'm never going Apple, MS is still hard to take seriously, and Android? Maybe I'm just really bad at choosing phones.
Edit: as an aside, my dad loves his (late 50s), but he doesn't game or care about tethering (with me, it's not often as well, but when I do, I expect it to work well). For him, it is mostly just navi, e-mail, and on rare occasions, browsing.
Edit 2: why do we not see more reviews like this instead of "omg it's the bestest octacore beast with terapixel camera that makes poking your friends on FaceBook a breeze?" I think we need "pro" reviewers at well known sites to dig a little deeper, and actually use devices as hard-core daily drivers for a week or so before passing judgement.
I tether just fine using easy tether pro. Sure it's not wireless but it's an easy way to get Internet on my netbook once in a blue moon. Worked just fine before I rooted.
I don't really disagree with anything from the previous entry. You would think motorola mobility's acquisition would have significantly changed things for the better. All I saw was a loss of webtop support. And wow going from the support of the galaxy nexus forums to these was a bit of an adjustment.
I watched a video today at android central regarding specs. Why they become so important. You don't see the issue with apple or windows phone. Yes there's fewer devices. More options should cause a healthy competition and I think we're getting there.
I do love the battery life on this phone. It's the sole reason I have it. I do also appreciate that there aren't tons of issues with the display and having to deal with worrying about the quality of a replacement device. Nobody wants a phone they can't rely on or enjoy. I just think it's funny how my galaxy nexus had all the features a year ago and I'm just finally starting to have friends and acquaintances ask me or brag to me about them.
I do think the X phone and its customizable aspects are great for certain users. But look how apple sells the iPhone. They focus on a feature like its camera. Interesting stuff.
Maybe android needs a figurehead to blatantly lie about her/his health to the public and get backdated stock options.
Edit 1
I do find it unsettling that technology advances so quickly that a device is much less popular in 6 months or a year. I feel this way especially because most people are in a contract for two years and are stuck with the device.
Edit 2
At least with a computer, you can upgrade it. Give it a new display, video card, max out the ram and it's like Christmas. Perhaps one day technology will permit the majority of smartphones to not only expand their storage space, but also easily enhance the hardware.
