out of box... ugh. Sigh. - Microsoft Surface

Ok, so very soon I will be excited to play with my new surface.
Just as soon at the 15 metro apps and 18 critical OS updates (oh, and a firmware update) finish installing.
I'm used to this from Microsoft systems, but it really would be nifty if they updated the build image at the factory at least once a month
Report back soon. At least the initial setup (since I already have a win-8 machine with settings synced to my live account) was fairly painless.
Just these damn updates to sit through!

And an hour later.... nearly there! One more update to go!

Well when I got mine on launch date, it was shipped straight from China, so yours is probably still the stock from the original production run (Especially if all the news reports are true about cutting back production).
Same issue as the Wii U gaming system, that has like a 3 hour update before you can use it. On the Wii U I set it up at work and got it updated and repacked it so my kid wouldn't have to deal with it on Christmas Morning.

Ok so the good news is its pretty darn nice once you get through all that. Been playing non-stop for four hours after the initial charge and at about 65% battery. Typing on glass right now with the touch cover folded over. Mounted windows shares, lync, one note, office365, yeah this is a really slick windows companion device. My Lumina 920 is jealous!

It's been fun, but I think it's time to go back...

I've played with my gtablet since they first came out. I have to say, as a preface, that it's not that I dislike the device. I think, at this point, an Android tablet has more "wow factor" than sustenance. With a nice, dual-screen desktop, a convertible notebook, and a good Android-based phone, I can't figure where this device fits it. I'd hoped for a replacement for my aging laptop, but the tablet just doesn't cut the mustard.
I have known about the downfalls of the software (the main reason my local Sears will get for my return), and I really do think that with better developed software, this will be a good device for $400. It's got excellent hardware (the screen excepted) and immense potential for those willing to put in the time to get it working. However, for what I had planned to do with the device, it's just not up to par for the amount of time I have to invest in it.
I look at the issue in this light: for another $150, I can get a device that is much more in line with what I use a computer for in the first place. I take handwritten notes in class, and capacitive touch isn't good for that -- strikes to the Lenovo S10 and Dell Inspirion Duo. Also, with Android, I don't have a way to sync back to my network and my catalog of handwritten notes from previous semesters. It's not Google's fault. OneNote is really the best application I've used for taking and organizing notes, and if the online version allowed you to draw, I might even rescind this reason.
I suppose if I had a lot more free time, or if I were a developer / CS person, I'd attempt to port Ubuntu (something that I had contemplated anyhow) over and run it on my tablet. Beyond getting correct drivers for everything, I don't think it would have been that much of a stretch to have done. If I weren't returning the device, I would have even taken the time to make the side buttons on mine backlit.
I'm not jumping ship for an iPad either. The only piece of (cr)Apple hardware in my apartment is my girlfriend's iPod, and it rarely gets used (and when it does, it gets synced with Winamp). Right now, the tablet I would want isn't even on the market yet, and when it does surface, it's going to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $1200.
So, if you're still reading, good luck. I hope my contributions to the community were of positive value. I would love to look back a few months from now and say that I should have kept it. I think it's going to take a lot of work from the community at large for that to happen, and you all are going to be the ones who lead the way. The work you guys have done (especially roebeet, et. al with the firmware mods) has been tremendous.
--
By the way, my tablet will be going back to the store at the University Mall in Tuscaloosa, AL if anybody is looking for one to pick up in the outlet. It will most likely still have clockwork recovery on it with the updated firmware in tow.
It was a pleasure reading your posts and I wish you well.

You'll be back. You're gonna return yours then by your own refurb haha.. jk. Is that even possible? Hmmmm
I also will be taking my tablet back at this point in time unless you can develop it cant really be a everyday dependable device. Iwent and bought the samsung galaxy tab while yes more pricey but i have since almost compltey replaced my smart phone and haven touched my computer for longer than 10 mins to sync some comic books

After all these mods, I'm keeping my g tablet, at least for the time being.
The galaxy tab is just awful.

I don't think the galaxy tab is awful but I don't think any tablet out today can practically replace a smartphone/phone or replace a laptop for that matter. IMO, tablets are for leisure. I'm also keeping my gtablet because I have a great smarthphone and an okay laptop already. I just need something more accessible than a laptop and a bigger screen than my smartphone.

I just have to say ew, and I'm a sprint supervisor for technical support.
Out of box and no modding, I would not keep this device either. Modded is another thing, since the device is amazing with the Nvidia driver patch from last night.
TnT Lite 2.0 + 2.03 Nvidia patch + Flash + Market fix = Kick a55 device.
Catch is 90% or more that get this device during the holidays will be non modders, so I understand the perspective, since fits the majority.
Viewsonic now have a community made FW package that would save their butts for massive returns with this device and actually make money. No way current state results in net positive $, come January.
Seems to me which is cheaper?
60,000 units sold x 70% returns (fair guess) = 42,000 x $100 (repack/refurb costs).......... $4.2 million cost impact for mass return scenario, or put a rom package on devices that works great and people will love and result in sales and increased demand......WHICH would you pick?
Added:
Viewsonic's decision will probably be an absolute marginal swing of about $7.2 million (for 60,000 units $4.2 million hit and $3M profit: for entire system)
Almost Going Back but Now .....
I had issues last night connecting to the internet. I was running stock ROM with a few sideloaded apps including Dolphin browser. Thought I had screwed it up. Unistalled everything to bring it back (close) to stock before the return later today. Then found out my wife was also having issues on her MacBook last night (PCs were all o.k.). Chalking it up to router (which I could see from the tablet).
So decided to play with the TnTLite V2 and 2.02. Now I am back on the keeping side of the ledger. I would feel better about this decision if I had paid much less for the unit, and I think we will be able to find lots of these returned and available in the next few weeks, but I am not going to wait that long. I have some travel coming and want to have this operational.
Last things I am hoping for: Music and Video off SDCard 2, tether unit to my Blackberry, Video chat operational. I am sure over the next few weeks, 2 out of 3 items will be checked off my list.
I only have a few more days to decide (14 day return at Staples!) but the scale is tipped toward keeping the device this afternoon.

Exactly... Tablet for surfing, video conf., emails, videos and games. Latop for work stuff. My wife does nothing more than surf the net, facebook, shop for stuff for the kids, etc etc. It's a perfect replacement for her aging laptop. If she needs to write a letter or do some "work" she can use my work laptop or the quad-core server in the office. For me, I just want something smaller than my laptop to surf and play games with.
So a replacement for a computer... No.
In addition to a laptop/computer... Yes.

When I initially heard about the GTab I was pretty excited for the hardware, but the software made me throw up a little in my mouth, so I completely dismissed it as a serious contender, and thus had my eye on the Archos 101.
After getting completely frustrated trying to track one down for purchase (Archos did a HORRIBLE job with initial supply) I was doing more research and saw that not only was the GTab completely unlocked (read: Hacker's Playground) and that the XDA community was already behind the device with several ROMs and hacks I actually scoffed at myself for ever considering buying the Archos.
2x as much RAM, easily 2x better CPU and graphics, 1080p out, android 2.2, and i could run down to my local Sears and pick one up immediately!!!
Ran down to Sears, grabbed a GTab, and w/in 5 minutes of opening it up I already had CM6.1, flash 10.1, full market, and all GApps. It was too good to be true. Decided to try out TnTLite and definitely a better "everyday" ROM than CM6.1 at this point, but that may not be the case in another week.
With the Tegra update from last night this thing screams. Flash plays just as well as my PC and the battery life is insanely impressive. I can't even imagine Gingerbread which *should* hopefully add support for the second CPU core.
Only complaints thus far: horrible viewing angle on the screen (turns out it's not so bad when you're actually watching a movie) and no backlit buttons.
COULD NOT BE HAPPIER WITH MY PURCHASE! This thing is going to make traveling this X-Mas with my kids a breeze. w00t!

The thought's crossed my mind. All the convertible notebooks I want are like $2k and $3k, and I don't have that kind of money to throw around. I'm kinda swinging towards picking up either a Dell mini 10 and modding it, or grabbing one of the ASUS 101MTs. I've gotten the "eww, Atom" remark already, and what I use a laptop for, an Atom is fine. I've been working on a 14" tablet for 3 years now that's running a Core Solo (even started with a half-gig of RAM). It's starting to show its age, which is the whole reason I considered the gtablet to begin with.

I agree completely. I was running TnT Lite on mine with the Flash APK, market fix, and a few apps. Viewsonic's update helped with the UI responsiveness, but Android (or the speed...) wasn't my problem. It just felt like the tablet was more like a toy than what I wanted it for.
Like I mentioned in the OP, if I would have kept the device, I would have put Ubuntu on it (or give up trying...) and modded it hardware-wise. Really, time was my biggest enemy with the tablet. If Sears return policy was at 90 days, I would have probably ended up keeping the thing. With the end of the semester approaching and a ever-growing list of things I need to do, I didn't have the spare time to invest.

If I learned anything from the experience, it's this:
If you're on the bleeding edge, sometimes you get cut
Capacitive touch screen devices are not good for note-taking. As such, if you ever intend to market something to students (I know, Viewsonic didn't...), either go resistive or Wacom. Or create an awesome stylus.
Release good products and the community will thrive on them. release mediocre products and you will have to thrive on the community.

If not a modder, the Gtablet is a dubious purchase, but 12/19 is when the official update comes for the Gtablet. Curious if they fix anything already fixed here.
Can anything involving the screen be improved with updates? I have been a fan of Android for a while and have a rooted EVO that I couldn't be more happy with. When I picked up my G tab I was thinking that all would be well with a little modding but I am not sure I can get past the screen.
I am looking for a good leisure device for the home and family, along with something and I can "hobby-mod". I am a little worried that with the viewing angles you won't be able to just relax and piddle on it. I think I grossly underestimated this shortfall of the hardware.
I swung by a Verizon store and spent about 20 minutes with the iPad and Galaxy Tab. Man, those are some pretty displays.
Is there any hope? I have TNT 2.04 and, performance-wise, I am content and can be patient for updates. Just those darn viewing angles....

I was wondering this too. I am very happy with the performance but the angles are killing me. I've only had it for 2 days and other than that I'm thrilled. Sadly, that may be a deal breaker. Landscape is ok but portrait is awful.

Apparently, Engadget's review of the Dell Inspiron Duo was equally harsh on the screen angles. Netbook screens FTL.

I've had my Gtab for almost a month, I've gotten used to the angles. It did bug me for the first week but as I tweaked this device and performance increase I've gotten over the sub par viewing angles. I think the tab's display is tolerable.

That's what I'm hoping for is I'll just get used to it. It's only been two days at this point.
I think it's the best option right now with the hardware and performance but I just have not been completely ok with the $400 price tag for the display yet. I had debated taking it back and just getting a refurb Ipad for $450 but it has it's shortcomings as well and I would much rather have Android.

Ice Cream Sammich early?

If it's coming on new phones early does that mean we might get it early too?
the sooner they release the source code the quicker we will get it.
I prefer they hold onto it longer and test the heck out of it. Heck ship it late if it means fewer bugs!
Hopefully Google learned it's lesson with Honeycomb/Xoom on what happens when you rush something to market in response to an Apple announcement.
...because rushing the OS worked so well last time around.
Seriously, Google. Take your time, and get it right this time around. If you don't, you're going to get a reputation for sloppy, buggy operating systems that you'll never be able to throw.

The RROD is a hardware issue, not a bug. If we want to equate to Android, the RROD would correlate with initial production of Asus' Transformer dock draining power all the time it's powered on, even when the tablet itself is asleep. A hardware issue, not a bug.
That said, I've run for five hours at a time with no issue (so far, touch wood). My ventilation's probably not great -- my Xbox sits in an enclosed desk above a 24-inch flat panel and a Core-i7 950 desktop that are both powered on all the time, and generate a fair amount of heat. There's maybe 1-2 inches free behind the Xbox, 6-8 inches above and to the sides, and it's almost always dusty.
Guess I've (so far) been lucky...
Unfortunately Google will rush it out and try beat iOS 5 release, which is stupid imo. But what can you do, when markets rule this world, not common sense!

That totally went over your head, lol. I know it isn't a bug, I was just poking fun at those who'd call it such, as that is the only problem I've ever seen with the 360, and it's hardly a bug.
Probably wanna put it out first so people won't say it's a copy of iOS 5.. but if it turns out crappy, then people will still hate on it. Boned either way!
IC
It really not up to Google exactly , it up to the OEMs like Asus. Google puts the basic OS and APIs together. That's really the easy part. Then to make it run on a particular device the OEMs have to write a hardware abstraction layer and HW drivers. The sooner Google releases source code the faster these hardware specific parts can be created. Of course the big partners like HTC and samsung have pre-release copies and are already working on it.
Well ICS was supposed to release around the winter holidays but with the new iOS5 supposedly coming in September, I can see them wanting to have something new to offer as well.
While I hate rushed software, new stuff is always fun to play with. Sure for the normal consumer grade peeps it may be icky but if you get ice cream you expect to get a little sticky.
Ice Cream Sandwich is supposed to bring us 2 things; Graphically Accelerated OS apps (like iOS) and a combination of Phone and Tablet apps (auto sensing?). Honeycomb 3.2 already brought us the phone support with the expanded view much like Apple's iPad/iPad2 does with their iPhone apps.
Really most phone apps expand pretty well on the tablet as they cover the screen well without "pixelated zoom" we see on the iPad's. Only a few crappy apps don't display properly but what do you expect, at least they work...
But the functions are supposed to be incorporated at the heart of Android where menu's (such as Settings) will auto adjust accordingly automatically. Some apps already do this. My Weather app on my phone, when setting the DPI to a lower setting it will automatically display the tablet version. The new Market also does this. With my LG G2x set at a 190 DPI, the tablet version of the market is displayed. All of the phone apps are still accessable as it reads your build.prop for phone model information.
I would imagine that once the CORE Android apps auto-sense and they allow GPU acceleration for pretty transitions and effects, it would be a smooth transition. Seems they are already implementing these functions right before our eyes and we don't know it (which means they are working properly).
The good thing with Android is that individual apps can be updated on the fly, where iOS uses a whole OS upgrade.
All I ask for is Smart Dialing!!!

lol so that's what that whooshing sound was. Thought it was just another work deadline going by. ;-)
I've been using iOS 5 on my iphone 4 for a few months now and it is a lot better then 4.x.x but my feeling is that it is (don't flame me) equal to gingerbread let me explain first
ios 4 and android 2.2 were the break out ones they brought a lot of new features to the platforms and changed how they all worked
ios 5 and android 2.3 are more minor upgrades, bringing things up to date and keeping it current but not bringing about massive innovation.
ICS in my view (if done correctly) would change everything. Major updates across the board. It would bring about the dawn of the android tablets and make them the massive selling beasts that the iPad is.
I am neither an iPhone fanboy or an Android fanboy. I get excited when iOS gets new features and when Android gets new features. Innovation or copying.
That's why i have a devices running both.

The point was, Microsoft knew about all the problems with the XBox, including RROD and disk scratching and the like, but decided that it was far more important to launch it anyway, and being first to market is more important, consumers are idiots and easily forget, give them a few months free Xbox Live and their $400 piece of overheating crap is the best thing ever (the free couple of months of Xbox Live is soon won back by all the costly accessories and recurring Xbox Live fees, so it's win-win for Microsoft).

Surface, lag, slow app launch slow internet

Just returned the Surface.
Lag opening apps. This is from a complete new Surface that has been restored and no apps launched yet.
Slow network. Way way slow. This is on a very good connection at home. Other mobile devices have no where the amount of lag. This is using IE in RT. I suspect this is IE rendering issues
Very sluggish performance overall. This is with the latest first party apps updated. Wether takes around 30 seconds to load. Mail takes about 30-60 seconds to load with one account, gmail.
While I think MS might have something here. I suspect or hope there running a newer build then what was released As this should have not been let out. It's just not fast enough to just pickup and start using since I am used to better performance, from Android, Apple.
Software can be fixed. Hardware is the real story. The hardware on the surface is really good. I think these little things can be fixed...

How new is it - there have been a number of updates already. Make sure you have them. Some will not update unless you are on AC power to avoid battery being depleted during update (Like the full Office update). There is also a Refresh PC option under PC options somewhere. You could also do a restart/reboot. There are some quirks which we are all working thorugh but.
There does seem to be an issue with lag when having multiple apps going but from what I read MS will be releasing a fix for that

At least, they can't fix the lack of NFC, GPS and 3G/4G...

ie sucks donkey ****, no contest.
other than that, very minimal lag. sometimes the news app stops loading but that's about it. mail loads in 2-3 seconds
I dunno man... I am absolutely loving mine. Super fast speeds while browsing the net in IE. Mail and other apps load in a two seconds or so.
Maybe you should have tried to exchange for another unit. It is fairly expensive...but I think its a completely new way to use a computer.
While there aren't tons of official apps yet , there are some pretty fantastic apps out there that meet pretty much all of my needs.
I do think the traditional desktop should be gone completely though ...its all but useless on the surface.
could also be faulty unit.. apps generally takes longer to load at first but gets faster soon afterwards.
I haven't seen any lag whatsoever on my unit. Maybe your router is incompatible with modern standards? Or your unit was defective?
My Surface RT is definitely one of the fastest tablets I have ever used. Although, I will add that its speed is in multitasking, not in launching apps.

It's just not fast enough to just pickup and start using since I am used to better performance, from Android, Apple.

weird. no sluggish performance for me...... no idea why yours is taking that long to load apps.... and zero problems with wifi.

I do not have any performances issues either. I own an iPad 2 and I like better the multitask implementation in WinRT than in iOS.
Anyone's soft touch keyboard extremely positional? It seems like I have to wiggle the connection to get the damn thing to work.

You guys really aren't having any performance issues with IE? That makes me wonder if maybe mine is defective in some way. Often when I load a webpage it will load part way and then just kind of hang for 30 seconds or so. Its really frustrating. I'm really loving other than that.
No performance issues experienced whatsoever. Love the build quality and speed of WiFi is very good. Found my HP Office Jet Pro printer instantly and I am printing too it now.
I'll definitely be looking at the pro for comparison sake as I already have an ultrabook and don't need 2.
The RT serves my needs as a "tweener" device.
This is a post that adds no value
This post adds no value to this forum. Did you try measuring your internet speed, cpu, and memory usage with task manager? How slow is it compared to what?
IE10 is one of the fastest browsers there and it is really hard to believe all of what you said is true.
As I said, IE sucks. I wish we had chrome for this bad boy. I do notice a slow down in typed characters appearing on the screen if I have a lot of apps open. Try to close them when youre done and that seems to help.
Anyone figure a way to close all open apps at once?
PS. One thing I had no clue about until today, the Microsoft logo on the front is actually a button!!
I returned mine after a day also. I think it has amazing potential, I just couldn't deal with the lag and resolution. I really do hope it makes it though.
I have noticed lag with the Modern UI version of IE but not the desktop version. I've been surprisingly happy with the desktop IE. I actually cancelled my RT order a week and a day before it was released and chatted with MS every day to make sure it was cancelled. It shipped anyway and I was SURE I was going to return it right up until the point that I opened the box. As soon as that happened I knew it wasn't going anywhere without me....lol. I love this thing. I may still upgrade to the Pro when it releases but I am kind of doubting that even, now. I can't wait to see the app development for this thing in the near future. I also love that all of the desktop stuff is still there like Computer Management, Control Panel and whatnot. I do wish I could join it to a domain and use POP email with the mail client but third party apps will fix some of that.
I'm surprised to see the resolution was a problem for you falconeight. I have been pretty impressed with the screen even compared to my wife's iPad 3. Oh and just to add to the fanboyisms I have really been surprised at how usable the touch cover has been as well. Maybe I am easily impressed, I don't know.

I agree with everything you said. I don think though that a lot of text is slight pixeled but not enough to complain or throw a fit. I guess im just not an early adopter. Why do you think the pro would be better? I kind of like the idea of a stripped down version of the OS. It makes it thinner lighter and easier. Oh and the touch cover is damn amazing I would be willing to say that it is the best piece of tech released in the last 2 years.
I was also surprised to see the OP - if the complaint was apps, I can see that, but I have also had no lag whatsoever - opening apps or otherwise.
My Surface did have 4 or 5 updates that were just installed on Saturday evening. Perhaps that would have fixed the issue?
As for the comments regarding GPS and CPD radios - the Galaxy Nexus Tabs don't have CPD options either. Maps works very well - it found my location perfectly even without GPS.
I'm starting to get the trend of putting more tech in the phone (NFC, GPS, CPD) and less tech in the tablets. Many of these wireless technologies are more well suited to pocket friendly devices. You wouldn't want to use Google Wallet or ISIS with a tablet (imagine how silly you'd look).
The Surface is not perfect, but for someone that needs a tablet as more of a productivity tool and less of a gaming platform and toy, I find it to be the best tablet offering currently available.

If you planned to return it why did you open the box?

Is it just me? (fourth shield)

The wife got me a shield for Christmas 2014. Had it for a couple months, then it started not responding or shutting down randomly. RMAed it. 3-4 months later the new tablet was recalled. Got a New one.... The new one never acted right studdered constantly. At that point I gave up, I used the tablet. But never really set it up, I just put games that I could save to the cloud with. And now it has started shutting down like the first one. So another RMA.
Am I the only one?

The K1 is my first tablet. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say its probably the worst tablet for $200. I've only had mine for a month. Already returned one cuz the OTA broke WiFi. WiFi sucks hard, constantly getting slow connection warnings on my favorite game (blame it on MM go ahead but my Nexus on MM doesn't have any issues), the reason I bought the tablet was to play it. Screen becomes unresponsive all the time, like 10x a day, sometimes I have to wait up to 5minutes just to open the app drawer, I've resorted to putting all my apps on my HS just to try to avoid this, doesn't help. Battery is horrid, stand by time is garbage, I have to turn it off just to have power when I want to use it again, Misc bug is not fixed. Charging is super slow, charge for hours only gains 20-30%. Support from Nvidia is non existent, posted on the support forums, not one response from anyone except users making excuses for this garbage.
I'm not rooted, completely stock, but maybe I should root to see if I can fix the issues myself but from what I read on multiple sites nothing helps. Will never buy a product from this company again. It's not just u
Yeah the software is buggy. Both Google and NV are to blame here. I've rolled back to Lollipop and Kitkat. Part of the problem is newer versions of Android tend to break apps that aren't updated anymore.
Don't expect companies to respond on forums. NV generally uses them only passively. Forums are a gas can of drama and lynch mobs waiting to explode. You can definitely contact them by other means.

i was contemplating about getting it becuase i need one, but it seems that unfortunately is down to the iPad or a Galaxy Tab S. As much as i dislike Sammy's SW update practice and Apple's lack of features, they are rock solid (i have both ipad air and tab s for my kids). Never had issues with them, but is time i stop hijacking my kid's galaxy tablet
I don't think the Shield is by any means a disaster. If you buy one, stay on the original Lollipop release until NV and Google get Marshmallow more refined. A lot of issues were cleared up with a recent update but it introduced wifi problems for a subset of users so they ceased distribution of it for the moment.
Shield is a neat tablet that is great for games and media. Fast for general apps too and just a great value for its price. Fun optional accessories and console mode capabilities too.

I totally understand about forums but if its an official NV support forum on their site I expect something from them. At least a mod response.
BTW lost 5% battery just typing this ????
I feel like the phrase "it's a good value for the price" is a weak point. It doesn't work.... If it's a good value it works.
Also not on 6.0. I really think its bad hardware and poor QC. I really don't think NVIDIA would have responded to anything.
I was looking at the Galaxy Tab A with Spen but..... The screen sucks. I like the Tab S but I wanted a pen. And there's the Zentab S... I am also playing with the wife's Surface 3 and Android emulators like Blue Stacks.
I've been using the K1 for a bit more than a month. I really haven't had much trouble with it. I've run their 4.4.2, 5.0.1, 5.1.1, and 6.0 releases on it. The problems I've had are primarily with apps not working on all OS versions and this is not really a NV specific problem.
The initial 6.0 had some quirks like the touchpad on their controller was non-functional. Yeah I have the controller. It's interesting and works well, including the gamepad mapper. There is also the apparent problem with the logd daemon hitting the CPU too much and wasting battery. I have not tried the newest 6.0 release. I'm waiting on NV to put it into the OTA system again. I'm not much impressed with 6.0 though because it's a lot like 5.x but adopted storage is not so hot and I preferred the old "move to SD" function (which is gone).
I own/have owned a bunch of different tablets and am used to fighting with Android quirks. I tend to go for fun projects like the old Nook tablets, some Chinese tablets, and Windows tablets. At the moment I have an Onda V919 Dual OS, Tegra Note 7, Venue 8 Pro, and the Shield K1. Samsung might be the way to go if you want the most solid experience. I would read the forums first on that though to be sure you aren't dreaming.
I think I might see if the replacement works. If not I'll sell it and move one.
Of course its not the best, but what do you expect for 200 bucks. That being said my only problem is the build quality, everything else works like it should. Im now since a week or so on 6.0 and everything works, its smooth and fast, no wifi issues. Performance wise its still one of the best Android devices till now, although its about 2 years old.
Here all fine...the only think i can't have working is the stylus only mode and lazo capture...back on MM update but even if I mod the build.prob nothing happen.
Waiting for 1.1 OTA

How far is too far?

So I have just spent the last 24 hours taking my HTC One M8 from Windows 8 Mobile all the way to the current release of Windows 10 Mobile (10.0.15254.582), and I learned a lot of cool things.
https://ibb.co/cF3P0pd
https://ibb.co/x1v4ygc
First: Windows mobile was doomed from the start, lack of developer support is clearly evident across the different releases and I can see why it never took off, this could have been great but even facebook tells me to use the mobile website how am i supposed to get my alerts from my random groups?
Second: This was a pain to do, Regedits out the wazoo, having to take all the knowledge everyone has posted and then applying it, literally just copy and pasted numbers of legitimate Nokia Lumia 950 to make it think it was a legit phone then taking the updates slowly so i dont break the damn thing since windows has an issue everything someone deletes the sys32 folder.
Third: HTC, Yall make a damn good phone if it can go all they way to the latest release and not break a sweat, then someone clearly did something right to allow this phone to last this long. (against its will)
Fourth: Profit? (probably not this took way too long and i am not writing a guide on how to do this)
I mean this device is still a pile of crap but I have discord (limited functions but eh) crunchyroll all sorts of other 3rd party out of necessity apps that cover from Facebook to YouTube, this platform could have been sooooo much more but since nobody developed for it and it died.
So my question is who else has shoved their m8 to the limit of what this OS has before Microsoft kills it?
I cant be the only one to have thought wouldn't it be great if maybe it was more use than a door stop?
Also can someone give me a functioning .apx for Opera Mini, (and possibly a walk-through) Fricking Edge is a POS.
Short story long, this weekend was supposed to be me taking the Android M8 and making it my backup phone by replacing the rom with one from linage i already had looked at and read how to, but the amazon seller I purchased it from sent me a windows version, but i already bought one to play with or turn into a overgrown hotspot since my lte ipad mini (gen 1) is a pile of crap (i have a 2018 ipad that is wifi only and i like my manga on a screen bigger than 5 inches), I am a semi driver and im gone 5 weeks then come home for 1 week, he screwed the pooch and now i have 2 windows phones so i needed a backup phone if my nice Pixel 3 was to get damaged and be NFG, so i went through all this to just get a phone that will work and have some entertainment value and well i think it could be a contender for my backup phone. So now i bought a M8 thats android but it hasnt arrived yet to my only choice was to work with the turd i have and make it shine a bit brighter. Anyway i have my m8 reg modded to allow tethering i have my ipad data only plan working flawlessly on the m8 even the website says its an m8 but isnt making me change plans, a spare sim so i can call in to get my number put on it since the store is a no go in 18 wheels of steel, it works and it works good for something it was never meant to do.
If anyone has questions i probably am the worst person to ask but hey maybe i can help (probably not but eh).
