[Q] Question about my battery consumption. - General Questions and Answers

Hello there everyone.
I used to have a blackberry phone in the past and my battery life sucked.
I've been out of work recently and I noticed that I charge my phone quite often daily. I've had this phone for about 4 months now. In the past, since I'm either in the office or trying to catch some sleep, I get by with one charge a day. But now I can barely last 5 hours with a charge. Granted that I seem to be holding my phone always and always doing something with it every time that I'm awake.
Let's just segue a bit with my Blackberry experience since this might be affecting my mentality a bit.
I used to have a bb 9630 and that phone literally won't last through a work day without me plunging it in my office computer mid work day.
So now we come back to my Xperia Pro.
This is a screen shot that I took just now.

I have been on YouTube for at least 3 hours straight before I took this.
Is this normal consumption? I mean, does watching videos on YouTube for 3 hours drains your battery that drastically?
I really have a bad sense of estimating things so I really can't tell if that's normal or not.
Although when I unplugged my phone and didn't use it for 55 minutes, my battery still went down like 3-4 percent.

Many times the manufacturer will provide a crappy battery because they are cheap. One easy fix to a battery drain issue is upgrade the battery. MAh's (milliamp hours) are what you look for with a battery upgrade. Most batteries will specify the mAh value (common figures are 1200mAh, 1350mAh, 1500mAh etc) but basically the higher the mAh value, the longer the battery should last between charges.
Online auction sites and stores are an easy way to obtain one. I upgraded this phone battery from the stock battery, got one with 350 more mAh and the device will now last 2-3 hours longer with the same software.
Press Thanks if this helped!

I'm kinda a bit hesitant with using a non-manufacturer battery. And it is really hard to get a hold of in our country. Most of those auction sites won't ship internally.
I guess what I just want to know is if my usage reflects my battery consumption without any anomaly.
And another question, is that media server thing caused by youtube or was it because I have a live wallpaper activated?
Sent from my MK16i using Tapatalk 2

Well the live wallpaper doesn't help battery life either, but you probably have your screen too bright, and watching youtube videos means you probably have the screen on 100% of the time, takes a crapload of power as well. I would definitely find out what the media server is though.

Hello,
when youre watching Youtube Videos on your Smartphone,
your battery drains very fast.

3-4 hours of screen on time is normal for the Samsung Galaxy S3 - obviously, a different device - but it doesn't exactly sound like a shocking figure to me that you're at 44% after 3 hours of YouTube. The fact that you have so much battery left AFTER watching video for 3 hours straight is very good and wouldn't call that drastic at all. I would call that good battery life.
3-4% an hour when not in use is probably due to having lots of apps constantly waking the device or having them use GPS, et cetera. You can use something like BetterBatteryStats to determine what's doing it if you're not sure.

Thanks for all the reply. I'll follow your advice and see what happens.

Here is the link, it says "vibrant" but it will work with sgs4g. Unfortunately, you have to make your phone fatter.
Hi Airfluip
Have you tried it?
I heard ppl say it does not last much more than the original bat.

no, i just found it. Don't have money to buy things, specially batteries.(I am 14) also, my battery lasts through a few days of use.
Mine lasts 1 day...
Tried out many ROMs and tweaks, guess I'm a very heavy user...

Not really fond of making the phone thicker. Better just to buy 2x 1800mAh (or 1500mAh) batteries and swap as needed.
I'm getting one of these soon, I will post my results whenever I can
thank you.
It's eta'd to be here around the 2nd, so it will be a bit

Update: i got the battery today, I'm letting it charge. right now I'm using my horrible flip-phone that i obtained when being on monthly 4g. i will get back with the results after the first full discharge
here is another one for cheaper: http://www.ecrater.com/p/12744868/extended-battery-with-cover-for-samsung-galaxy-s#
you get what you paid for. honestly, I wouldn't trust one of those.
As for the Seidio, last night it lasted me 10+ hours with heavy usage(constant music, gaming) and it was at 39 percent or so when I plugged it in.
Today, i have had it unplugged for four hours, listening to music around the same amount and it is at 90 percent so it's a major plus
before 10 percent would last me maybe 30 minutes max if i'm constantly listening to music, and this is only my second cycle. waiting until it's completely broken in
I will post a full report once I actually kill the thing lol

So this is what my battery looks like after two days of usage. With music playing, downloads happening, standby standing by calls being taken, etc etc. So I guess this battery really does this phone some good as I never have been able to squeeze this much juice out of my phone. Oh did I mention I was playing games hours at a time.
I recommend this product a lot, but I don't necessarily deem it an absolute need, but close to it, especially for excessive use
I was going it let it drain, but I think I'm going to throw it on the charger now, as the major drawbacks are a longer charge time, and thr size....which once you're used to it isn't as bad as it seems, I actually like the extra weight, and the way it feels.
Anyways if you're willing to shell around 60 bucks out for more juice(a lot more) then I highly recommend it

.......................
Very interested in the biggest capacity battery I can get for around ~40-60 bucks.
I just got my phone four days ago, only just now let it go through a complete drain cycle.
But I was doing homework today and it didn't even make it through a full day of classes for me (From 7am to 4pm). Mostly just listening to music, calculator, a new text every twenty or so minutes, quick google shots during English classes.
Really disappointed by that. But if an extended battery will fix it (Also going to pick up a portable power pack if I can), I have to ask ... does this phone only draw 500 mA maximum when charging? I use the Apple USB charger because it's output is 1 Amp, the Samsung charger is 750 mA. Don't see a difference really - they both take a REALLY long time to charge.
....................
..................
I'll take it, then.
Thanks a bunch for the tests.

[Q] Need some help with battery

Hi all,
I am reading forum for a while.
I have purchased sensation 2 weeks ago (used one) and its full stock.
In my best i can get 12h from battery. 3-6 calls cca 5min, maybe 5min of surfing on wifi, 3g off, screen on 10%,...
And i turned off all sync and so (like i sad i read forum)
Next is Anker battery.
what do you recommend next?
and my friend and also have stock sensation and get day and half in light use...
Tnx to all
sorry for my eng, not using often
I bought an Anker battery set from Amazon for around £20 GBP it came with 2 Anker 1900mAH batteries and a charger so you can have the spare charging while not in use.
Since using the Anker batteries I have noticed a big improvement, I am able to have the screen at a usuable brightness and can happy use it for a full day without having to worry about pluggin my phone in ever chance I can.

DEFINITELY Anker ! It's AWESOME.
With battery life that poor I'd say something is draining it far more than it should. When I first got my Sensation the sync icon was constantly on and the battery would just plummet, turned out that HTC Watch was constantly syncing and I had to remove the Watch account.
Go to Settings -> About phone -> Battery -> Battery Use and tap on the graph, if the Awake bar is blue consistently more than the Screen bar then you have a rogue app draining the battery.
so i order anker battery yesterday. ( i hope it will arrive soon)
today i was talking with guy in phone shop and in his opinion battery should last 2 days at least (none to light use)
and that my problem could be in software
any suggestion?
My Sensation XE has also experienced rapid battery loss since yesterday, such that from charging it maybe once day, I'm now needing to charge it twice or more per day. I purchased an App yesterday, which I discovered was then running constantly, so I unisnatlled that today. However, I was still experiencing fairly rapid battery loss, so I had a look for more running Apps which were using fairly large percentage of power, and uninstalled those which I decided I didn't need - but it seems that I may still have a rogue power-consuming App.
Any ideas on identifying it?

Use a custom ROM.
Batterly life was pretty poor for myself on the stock ROM as well, but after rooting and using custom made ones, it's a hell of a lot better.

To install this anker battery do I need any special cover for it or does it use the same stock cover?
It works with the stock cover. Same dimensions as the normal battery.
i was testing last night to what is draining my battery and
when i woke up first i had to insert card pin (???) and then showed 45% left after 10h being on and half of that time without signal because of sim card.
sim car is brand new...?!
I'm not sure if this is just my personal experiences, but I can sometimes solve fast draining battery cases by just rebooting the phone. I suspect that in those cases it's some (rogue?) app that's running in the background or was improperly terminated that's causing the problem.
Also I've read that WiFi uses more power on standby than 2/3g, thus if you don't plan on using WiFi at any time it would be a good idea to shut it off until you do. Also phones that are constantly searching for cell signals drain batteries significantly, thus if you're in a place with crappy reception, your battery will in turn suffer as well.
just my noob .02
little update
my anker battery has arrived few days ago and its miles better than the stock one
but i left last night phone on and this morning its off and i couldnt start
i put it on charger and nothing
then i used voltmeter and its 0,00
brand new anker battery... i am so fu**** mad because last time i was looking it was 43% battery left....

[Q] average or bad battery life?

thinking about getting my battery swapped if VZW lets me (have had the phone since 7/10).. if not, then get a new one. but before i go into the store, i wanted to see if you guys think this is normal battery life from these screenshots. i have GPS off, Google location on, and only my Google account (Gmail, contacts, calendar) is in sync. i'm running a rooted stock rom (debloated VZW and Samsung apps by me).
in addition, the back of my phone gets really hot during regular data use (web, Facebook, Instagram, Engadget and Verge apps, ESPN, etc.. no games), to the point where it's uncomfortable to hold. i've heard that there might be a batch of bad batteries for the earlier shipments, so i was wondering if mine might be one of them. thanks for any input.

Do you have 4G on at all times? I think my battery might be pretty bad too...I've been losing 10% every hour, so my phone pretty much lasts only 10-12 hours. I'm impressed by your 1 day battery life. Even if I have wifi only on and turn 4g off, I still only get 10% every hour. I think something might be wrong with my battery...I've factory reset it many times before too, wiping cache, and dalviks, I'm now on the stripped rooted stock.
that's not bad battery life. Especially sense it looks like you are not in great coverage area.

After using the Chrome app for 30 minutes straight, my phone doesn't get noticeably hot. I've also used the Engadget, Verge, and Facebook apps for 10+ minutes in a row, and it doesn't get hot. The only time I have seen it get hot is playing games and charging. Even then, it's not bad.
I would say you have a gold battery lol, I rarely even get 18 hours on my batter even when 12 hours of that is just standby/listening to music.

haven't had a proper measurement of the temp, but it feels like it does reach the upper 90s, and that's with light web browsing, so that's what worried me.
it's just that i see people who claim "heavy use" and get 4+ hours of screen time, which i found hard to believe, if they really are pushing the phone a lot, so i just thought maybe something's up with mine. thanks for all the input so far.
Looking at your battery consumption log, I'd say your battery life is pretty great.
Seeing as how your cell standby is 50%, you're either using a lot of 4G or you're in a crappy signal area. Or both. Haha.
Even if you buy a new battery, chances are that you won't get better battery life. Just charge the phone overnight and unplug in the morning. As a general rule of thumb, if you can squeeze 16 hours of usage out of your phone, you're doing pretty great.
yup, that seems pretty darn good to me. I get about the same 4G coverage as you with Verizon in my home 2-3 bars max (-100 to -120dBm), and I get ~14 hours before my phone is about to die. I also think I just use my phone a lot more than you lol. You only had 2.45 min of on screen time in a little over 1 day. I usually have close to that in the 12-14 hour days with my phone.
Agree with last two post...what else are you looking for looks good....
Should I ask for a new battery? 3 hours 30 minutes 30 min screen time and down to 67% battery.

[Q] Help with identifying Nexus S i9020a Battery Drain

Running Stock ICS 4.1.2 on Nexus S i9020A on AT&T US.
The battery was fine till about a few months back, but of late, it is draining @ around 8-10% per hour on standby!. I originally thought JB was causing the drain, and switched to ICS, and finally to GB. But the drain is consistent across all three.
There is also accelerated battery drain if my phone is completely switched off. If I leave the battery in the phone after powering off, the battery goes from 100 - 0 in less than 4 hours. Thinking the battery might have gone bad, I bought another oem battery, but that is exhibiting the same behavior.
This leads me to think there might be a hardware issue with my phone. I am tired of keeping the phone plugged in at all times, and am ready to throw this out the window and get another phone. As a last ditch effort, I wanted to post this here to see if I can get any kind of feedback/confirmation on this before I buy another phone. Other users are reporting 1-2% battery drain on standby, so 8-10% drain is unacceptable by any standard.
I have attached some screenshots from today when the battery was at 20% after about 9 hours. For this test, I did the following last night:
1. uninstalled all apps I downloaded
2. turned off WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, sync, auto brightness ( set to the minimum brightness)
I charged the phone fully, and then left it on standby, with minimal usage - I think I made a 2 minute call, checked my email once, and read some rss feeds for about 5 minutes in the 9 hours I tested it.

I know I'm not giving any advice here but I just wanted to let you know I'm in the same boat. No matter what ROM GB/ICS/JB I lose too much battery per hour with the phone just on standby. There's no explanation for %10 battery drain per hour with pretty much everything off (wifi, data, gps, nfc, background data, etc)
I have tried everything and now I must admit I've given up. I'm just going to ride out CM 10.1 until I can decide on a new phone, most likely the Nexus 4 or HTC One.

Yeah, your phone doesn't seem to be doing much while asleep. 20 minutes screen on, 35 minutes active, yet battery down to 21%. My battery would be at 90% with that sort of usage. Since you changed the battery (I'll assume it's a decent quality battery, although a cheap battery could be in cause), there's not much left.
Have you tried switching 3G off? 3G seems to SUCK the life out of these Nexus S batteries like no tomorrow.
But I suspect it's a hardware issue with the Nexus S phones. I have WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and auto-sync all shut off and a static wallpaper and I will lose 20% of my battery in 7-8 hours.
Battery is kernel related. Try changing your I/o scheduler to row and governor to smartassv2. If you don't have those options then look for a kernel that does...air kernel and matrix should suffice.
NO SOLUTION so far
A friend was having the same issue, gave him the battery of my nexus s ... it lasted him for 7-8hrs max whereas it gives me 1 day~ on 2G and normal use without gaimng . So my guess like his mobile your mobile may have some component which is short and draining out the battery . I have been trying to look around for answer but so far no luck. So better check it with another batteryif you can before purchasing a new one.
Vampire test
If anyone is investigating why their Nexus S suddenly starts draining the battery in a matter of hours, BEFORE spending a ton of time (like I did) trying to diagnose what software problem you might have, do the vampire test, as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42586314
I wasted days before coming across this test on this forum, and it proved it had to be a hardware fault.
I have two healthy batteries, both hold a charge for days (probably weeks) when not inserted in the phone, but pop one in the phone, leave it powered off, and within 6 hrs it's dead. So frustrating, and sad to see this phone go.

How's battery life holding up after almost a year?

I've recently noticed that the battery on my P3 seems to be dying. I've gone from 1.5 days of use at the start to 0.5 days. I also had some other issues with the port malfunctioning, so I managed to get a replacement under warranty.
Before I send my old unit back to Google, I decided to document how bad the battery has gotten to see if anyone is having similar issues with the phone at ~10mo of use.
Here's a screenshot of what battery looks like on it with a blank flash of stock, left it on airplane mode for the entire day and didn't use:

I bought mine used from Ebay so I have never seen "new" battery life..
Battery lasts less than a day but I have very poor cell reception.
On a new P3, does the 100% less the usage ever equate to current charge?

Roughly 3.5-4 hrs, which after playing with the mate 20 pro it really makes you jealous.
Mine is a year old today. Accubattery says that health is 90% (2615/2915 mAh) and will last 6h 26m SoT from 80% full based on cumulative averages. I manage charge to 80% with tasker.

2586 mAh after one year. I would say that's ok, considering that I keep it plugged in over night. As for it's high consumption, i blame it on Android 10. I have no numbers, but it feels like I've lost 1/3 of the capacity since I got the phone...
5 hrs SOT with about 15% left. Kirisakura + Servicely
I was on lineageos, had more than a day. Since I'm back to stock, harshly have more than 12 hours

That is pretty poor. No degradation noticed on my year old Pixel 3. My wife's 3-year old Pixel is about what you are experiencing, and she is due for a battery replacement.
