I've begun to get the impression that skyrocket users keep their phones unplugged all day even if a charger is available.
There are so many battery threads about how long it batteries are lasting.
I'm just wondering- aren't we supposed to keep the batteries as fully charged s practical s often as practical and only completely drain and recharge once a month or so?

I plug it in at night and unplug it in the morning. A benefit of priapism. But I digress. I charge the phone overnight no matter what the charge level is. Simple and effective.

Keeping your battery at 100% and/or on the charger as much as possible is a great way to ruin your battery.
When I was using my Rocket as my daily driver, I could get 30-36 hours out of a charge, so I wasn't draining it dry by leaving it unplugged all day. You'll find similar stories all over this forum, as the Skyrocket has some great ROMs that give it stellar battery life.
I usually keep it plugged at night unless I am using it to play to fall asleep

Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count. The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles to prolong life
Under normal circumstances this should not be necessary because once the lithium-ion battery is full the charger discontinues charge and only engages when the battery voltage drops. Most users do not remove the AC power and I like to believe that this practice is safe.

Battery life is one of my only complaints about the device. I don't know a ton of facts about batteries but I let it charge overnight and at most I can get about 7-8 hours of heavy use. If I don't charge my phone at school, it will be dead once I get home. I have used several different ROMs with varying battery lives. My brightness would always be on lowest, no live wallpapers, etc. CM10 got me about 5-6 heavy use. Slimbean got me about 4-5 heavy use. 4.1.2 deodexed touchwiz died in about two hours moderate use with only using to send a few texts and change phone settings. Now I've decided on Liquid Smooth
Which seems to get me 7-8 hours of heavy use. Of course these all weren't tested with the intention of finding the exact battery lives by using the same process on each phone, but I did get some knowledge of how different ROMs affect battery life. Now I'm waiting for AOSP 4.2 and I'll be trying that. I hope this helped.
Edit: Somehow misunderstood the subject of the thread. I don't intentionally drain mine daily and if it is at 100% then I take it off the charger until its about >70%

i leave my xoom charging before sleeping, so at some point, it reaches 100% while I'm asleep. I unplug it only when I wake up in the morning.

If the guys from motorola only know a little bit about what they are doing, its not harmful.
All devices today are designed with protections against overcharging. I keep mind hooked up to the charger all day at my desk. Don't worry about it.

It is bad though. I know a lot of people who overcharge their laptops and gadgets and their devices stop holding charges. Their laptops have to be plugged in all day and night just for them to be able to use it.
Traditional theory is that you should try to drain the battery as much as possible between charges so you have fewer total recharges. If you are plugging it in every night you are likely to start seeing diminished capacity is 1.5 - 2 years and may need a battery replacement at 2-3 years. If you only need to plug it in every other night, you can effectively double the battery life.

The batteries used today don't have "memory" any more, but the materials used internally have a service life, rated in charging cycles.
If 2 XOOMs with identical hardware and software were both used exactly the same, but 1 was plugged in every night regardless of need, and the other plugged in every other night, the effective charging life span of the battery internals would be approximately doubled.
But this doesn't actually answer your question.
No, leaving the XOOM plugged in will not hurt the battery or device.
Li-Ion is actually some what unstable. So the Mfgs incorporate overload protection circuitry into the battery itself.
It keeps the battery from being charged or drained too much.
The Li-Ion will become unstable above and below certain voltages.
Bump charging is an attempt to defeat this system, its like topping off the gas tank in your car.
If this protection fails the battery could overheat and potentially rupture.
I'm sure you remember the exploding laptop battery issues not too long ago?
For MB865 in perticular :
1)What difference does it make if you charge from empty to 100% in switched off stage and the same in on state? Which is better?
2)How should we calibrate the battery and how often using which app for unrooted MB865 Asia retail?
3)Also if phone dies (switches off) constantly due to insufficient charge does it harm the battery in terms of cells getting destroyed gradually? Mine dies many times mostly in night due to day usage before I charge in the morning again.
4) Does switching off or switching on the phone while charging have any effect issue on phone or the battery??

Calibrating the battery doesn't do anything. I wouldn't even mess with it. Every once in a while, charge your battery to 100% and use it til it dies without charging. That's about it. There isn't a whole lot you can do with you battery to make it better.

Thanks & I guess it covers #2 of my queries . Can't even begin to describe how much essential my Moto WPS-602-P893 external portable battery pack charger is. I have to add when I first unboxed my Atrix 2 last month (launched only recently in India) the first thing I did without switching it on, was put it on charge for straight 6-7 hours (as I remember having read somewhere that devices are charged 50% from the factory & the initial charge plays an important role in the future performance of the battery. 3G & GPS coupled with some gaming suck the battery dry pronto.
@tmease1 Are you sure? I have read and tested that resetting the battery calibrations in more accurate reporting of what apps are specifically draining your battery.
Charging when your phone is off just makes it charge faster, nothing else.
And from my knowledge of chemistry Lithium-ion batteries (the one in your phone) should not shouldn't be let reach a complete stage of discharge. (I can give you an explanation of you would like). Lithium-ion batteries are very flexible, they can be charged at any point in the cycle but again letting it completely discharge is to be avoided. It shortens the battery life by about half after a year.

I might not be right. From my personal experience what i told him is how i run my phone. I use to be the king of trying out new things to improve battery life. I would try anything. I use to calibrate my battery after ever flash and honestly have not seen any difference since i stopped. You would think that calibrating it would do more harm than good after awhile. Google at one time said that it wasn't necessary. I don't really know for sure what to tell anyone to do. I gave up on battery up keep awhile ago. I got sick of messing with it and just carried an extra charger.

Whenever I flash a different ROM I reset battery in CWM. Other than that, I'll run the battery down all the way at least once a month then recharge to 100%.

Also you actually cannot completely discharge li on batteries. Doing so royally screws them up. So devices now that use them have a circuit which kicks in when they reach a minimum level telling the device to shut off.

Yeah, all you have to do is boot into CWM. Go to advanced, and there should be an option to wipte battery stats. Alternatively you could download an app just search "battery stats wiper" or something of that sort in play store.
So I just got my galaxy s3. I haven't turned it on yet. But I heard that you were supposed to charge it fully and then let it die. Then charge it fully again and then start using it. That when. Doing this you will optimize your battery so it will charge faster, hold a charge faster, and just last longer.
Is this myth or fact? And if fact how do I do the steps so I get it right?

To clarify what I am asking I am saying does it always harm the life of the lithium ion cell by letting die fully? Like even after 6 or 8 or 12 months of owing the phone (or any device), not just one the first charge. This could be very useful for further reference...:good:
There are some things can help increase life of litium batteries. First, don't let it go down to 0% as mentioned, keep not lower than 50%. Once per month it is recommended to discharge battery to 0% and then charge it to 100% again for device callibration.

In fact, this happened to me with a notebook, which I used to play with and charging at the same time. In the end, the battery lasted for a few minutes and I had to sell it.

Yes yes!!
This happened too (as funny as it is) my grandma. She would ALWAYS have her little nnotebook plugged in and eventually it drained. I found out because one day I took it off the plug a d it died while I was on facebook after around 7 minutes.
So I bought a new battery and now she charfes iit and takes it off the plug to use it and twice a month she lets it die and it has worked

1) don't keep live wallpapers
2) keep the brightness to the lowest possible
3) don't charge while playing games or even use the phone
4) don't use apps which run in the background and drain the batter

Sir i just want to ask If we charge our battery even if its above 20% or if the battery icon is not yet colored red will it affect our battery life in the future? Or we should only charge our battery when it is below 20-15% ?

It is true if you have a phone like Nokia 3310 if you do not have a NiMH battery do not do that you will lose time also you do not need to "format" a Li-Ion battery
read about lazy-battery effect on Wikipedia
rooting you phone to underclock/undervolt should also help out battery life pretty significantly ^_^
Lithium ion cells do not suffer from the "memory" effect as older rechargeable batteries. You do not have to let the battery run all the way down then fully charge it again to get the best performance that way, that was for the older types of batteries (again so you wouldn't get that "memory" effect) matter of fact its rather harmful to the battery to run it all the way down.
Charge the battery as often as you want no matter at what level it is. If you are going to do some high power **** (play a game, watch a movie) then plug it if if you have a charger around. The longer the battery stays at a high level the better for it. Try not to let your battery run your phone at a low state (charge it asap). Its ok to leave it on the charger even after its fully charged. Your phone and charger are smart enough to know when to start/stop charging the battery. This will ensure a long life for your battery.
...as for your phone...simple rules...if you are not using it( DATA, WIFI, GPS, SYNC, BLUETOOTH) then turn it off. Screen is the biggest battery drainer...KEEP IT ON AUTO!...darker themes really help alot...make your screen go off at 30 sec. or less. Have fun with your new phone homie.

So my maxx will drain to 1% battery in about 3 days with 3 hours screen time. The thing is once I hit 1% it can stay on 1% and not shut off for hours. Right now its been on 1% for about 7 hours, I have a youtube video going just to see how much longer it will go. Its been playing a youtube video now for about 20 min on 1%.
I just got this phone last week, is this because the system hasn't fully calibrated the battery? Or is the battery defective in some way? Its kind of annoying because you think you are out of battery but it keeps going so I don't really know how much battery I have.
Definitely not normal. I'd do a factory reset to eliminate a software issue and if the issue persists seems like it must be a hardware issue, exchange it
These sound like calibration issues. Can you fully charge your battery and then leave in on the charger for awhile -- like an hour or more? That should calibrate it correctly.
I have never nor will ever let my battery get that low. These batteries don't like to be drained and then fully charged it's not healthy for the battery. I don't let my battery go below 30 to 40 percent if I can help it. Most of the time I let it get to about 50 percent then I charge it.

not to be rude but where is you information or evidence backing your statement? this goes against everything i know and i certainly always allow my battery to fully die then i fully charge it over night while it is off, i believe charging at 40 percent fools the battery into thinking that is the end of the battery's daily life span and therefore dying prematurely due to it believing that 40 percent is the end.
I do not have any real evidence except i've gotten exceptional battery life with my Ultra after allowing a full cycle (draining all the way and then fully charging while powered down)...i have gotten just under 32 hours with 4 hours and some odd minutes screen on with about an hour of voice calls and random other usage such as tapatalk browsing, internet, texting and maybe some email or youtube....i occasionally play some games like the new CoD Strike Force

Coming from a Gnex, I have a charger within 3 feet of me everywhere I go. I'm trying to break myself of the habit of plugging it in but mine still gets a charge at some point during the day, if only in the car. It has always been my practice to let my phones run down almost to dead maybe once every couple of months. I feel like it keeps the phone's battery meter calibrated although I have nothing to base this on.

I read on a thread that this specific battery will lose a percentage of its capacity every time it's charged below 20% or above 80%, is this true? & if so or if not then what is the best way to charge the battery in this phone without deteriorating it?

Everyone has their own opinion on this. Draining it below 10-20% could shorten the overall lifespan but I doubt the 80% or higher part you read is true. I personally charge mine every couple days and I'll still have about 30-40% left. I don't usually let it go lower than that. Rechargeable batteries like to be charged and killing them can damage them. Like a car battery, if it runs dead several times, it will most likely be ruined much earlier than if it wasn't ran dead. Just keep above 20% to be safe. Everyone's opinion of lowest percent is different.
