[Q] Battery Charging & calibration query - Motorola Atrix 2

For MB865 in perticular :
1)What difference does it make if you charge from empty to 100% in switched off stage and the same in on state? Which is better?
2)How should we calibrate the battery and how often using which app for unrooted MB865 Asia retail?
3)Also if phone dies (switches off) constantly due to insufficient charge does it harm the battery in terms of cells getting destroyed gradually? Mine dies many times mostly in night due to day usage before I charge in the morning again.
4) Does switching off or switching on the phone while charging have any effect issue on phone or the battery??

Calibrating the battery doesn't do anything. I wouldn't even mess with it. Every once in a while, charge your battery to 100% and use it til it dies without charging. That's about it. There isn't a whole lot you can do with you battery to make it better.

Thanks & I guess it covers #2 of my queries . Can't even begin to describe how much essential my Moto WPS-602-P893 external portable battery pack charger is. I have to add when I first unboxed my Atrix 2 last month (launched only recently in India) the first thing I did without switching it on, was put it on charge for straight 6-7 hours (as I remember having read somewhere that devices are charged 50% from the factory & the initial charge plays an important role in the future performance of the battery. 3G & GPS coupled with some gaming suck the battery dry pronto.

@tmease1 Are you sure? I have read and tested that resetting the battery calibrations in more accurate reporting of what apps are specifically draining your battery.
Charging when your phone is off just makes it charge faster, nothing else.
And from my knowledge of chemistry Lithium-ion batteries (the one in your phone) should not shouldn't be let reach a complete stage of discharge. (I can give you an explanation of you would like). Lithium-ion batteries are very flexible, they can be charged at any point in the cycle but again letting it completely discharge is to be avoided. It shortens the battery life by about half after a year.

I might not be right. From my personal experience what i told him is how i run my phone. I use to be the king of trying out new things to improve battery life. I would try anything. I use to calibrate my battery after ever flash and honestly have not seen any difference since i stopped. You would think that calibrating it would do more harm than good after awhile. Google at one time said that it wasn't necessary. I don't really know for sure what to tell anyone to do. I gave up on battery up keep awhile ago. I got sick of messing with it and just carried an extra charger.

Whenever I flash a different ROM I reset battery in CWM. Other than that, I'll run the battery down all the way at least once a month then recharge to 100%.

Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count. The smaller the depth of discharge, the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid frequent full discharges and charge more often between uses. If full discharges cannot be avoided, try utilizing a larger battery. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles other than to calibrate the fuel gauge on a smart battery.

Also you actually cannot completely discharge li on batteries. Doing so royally screws them up. So devices now that use them have a circuit which kicks in when they reach a minimum level telling the device to shut off.

Yeah, all you have to do is boot into CWM. Go to advanced, and there should be an option to wipte battery stats. Alternatively you could download an app just search "battery stats wiper" or something of that sort in play store.

I've always said this simple statement about LiIon: Charge early and often.
Do you need to plug the phone in every time you get off a call? No. Do you need to worry about it dropping below 80%? No. Just charge as often as is convenient. Sitting at a desk for a hour working on something? Charge. Driving for more than 15m? Charge.
I think if you obsess too much you might wind up with USB connector problems from all the cycles on the connector itself, but intelligent use of the above statement should get you the most out of your battery.

Some articles say that one battery life cycle is used up everytime when a full charge is done. Other articles say that one battery life cycle is used each the battery is connected to the charger.
I have not seen one article that shows the truth with facts.

No offence but I always found this to be stupid reasoning.
What if you leave home with a quarter full battery and you get caught in the middle of a natural disaster (earthquake as an extreme example) and need to keep in contact with rescuers after being stuck in a building for 2 days?
Personally, I always charge my phone/laptop whenever convenient.

The only problem that your battery lasts only for 6 hours is due to too much charging...So when you will buy a new battery then make sure that only charge your battery when it will remain only 10%...And try to charge your battery with phone switched off..
Charge little and often, try to avoid deep discharge/charge cycles.
Back in the days of NiCd batteries there was the posibility of memory effect where if you didn't do a discharge/charge the battery wouldn't hold as much charge.
NiMH batteries do not suffer this, but discharge/charge cycles were required because when they started being used very few people had smart chargers so had to discharge to be able to time when to stop without overcharging, and also due to confused information pulled over from NiCds.
Top up charges are better for them too.
Lithium batteries also don't have memory effect, and are better off with top up charges.
Ask yourself this:
What would stress the battery more; running 1A through it for 10 minutes or 1 hour?
Also, as the battery discharges, its voltage drops so the current drain has to increase to compensate, discharging the battery even quicker (remember how capacity graphs drop off quickly?)
Say your phone needs 2W to run, with a 4v battery that's a drain of 500mA (P=VI)
When the battery has dropped to 3.5v then to produce 2W it takes approx 571mA.

I've always just charged my phones overnight while I sleep. Never seen ill effects. If I don't make it home that night my phone still lasts through the next day.
It's not like that battery is irreplaceable. Go get a new one if your battery is nearing the end of it's life. By then you would have probably moved on to a new phone.

as others allready mentioned, there are many different suggestions how to take care of the battery. I usualy reload the baterry only if the capacity is <= 5%, without unpluging it before it reaches 100%.

[Q] Am I Damaging My Battery?

I go out at night mostly so by the time i leave the house my phones battery is about 75% full. I have the LG G2x. My question is sometimes before i leave i'll see that it's 75% full so i'll charge it back to 100% before i leave. Does charging the phone without it being drained damage the battery? should i just leave it alone next time i go out? sorry if this is already a thread just point me in the right direction.

You're not damaging your battery But if you never drain the battery completely, i'm not sure how good the battery will be after 6 month, so i recommend you drain it completely every couple of weeks.

There are several opinions about keeping battery health for more time. Recharging at 75% is not one of them, but it's not the worth of it.
Here's what i know and what i've heard:
* some manufacturers (laptops) have software that don't allow the battery to charge when it's over 80 to 90% - they say it helps on battery life
* it's common sense that you should recharge when you have 20 - 40% and do a full cycle once in a while (this is what i do)
In my opinion, charging only 25% of the charge in a regular basis will not really help to keep battery life...
I've personally had the best performance from batteries when I let them discharge as much as possible and then charge them to full without interruption.
some have also said that draining the battery too often can also damage it, is this correct?
They like to be ran down then recharged but not all the way down to nothing unless you are having a problem with bat life on a rom

Yes. You should not drain your battery all the time. Use normally, charge it when below 40% and yes, charge it back to full - that's the ideal thing.

+1 that is the best way. Li-on batteries should'n be drained completly because it can shorten their life.
I read somewhere that it is not important when you start charging your battery (20%, 60%...) but it's important that it finishes to charge up to 100% every time
I heard/read that LI-ION batter is good to charge when cap goes bellow 30%.

[Q] How Many Times Did You Calibrate Your Battery Before You Gained Full Potential

I am now on my 2nd full charge. Drained completely and full charge while off. I have the battery calibration app and i use it. Im about to take my phone off the charger and put it to work.
How many times did you calibrate your battery before you got the full potential of it. I see some people are getting as much as 30+ hrs on their device while im getting 7-9 on moderate use.
I've never done that. Always read that draining lithium-ion batteries hurts the battery if done repeatedly. Instead I just charge to full then delete battery stats in clockworkrecovery. Battery has been great ever since that and a factory reset.

What does deleting the battery stats via ClockWork do? Do you delete them on each charge?
I was getting great battery life and then I used the calibration software and I'm getting good, but slightly less great battery life. Does uninstalling/freezing that app do anything or once it's calibrated, it's done?
The phone has a dual-core processor, and the best GPU you can get in a phone these days, so you can't expect it to get super battery life unless you never use the phone much. I did the calibration once, and have been able to go all day under moderate to heavy use. All day being 8am-7pm and still having ~20% charge.
Sadly my first g2x that I received wasn't able to go through more than 4 hours of standard use even after fully charged the 2nd time. I sent it in last Friday for exchange and now I'm waiting for the 2nd g2x to be send to me. Well see how it goes by then.
@himmelhauk - I noticed in your signature that you have the Paul O'Brien fix... I saw in that thread that that noticeably increased speed/smoothness, but I haven't heard anybody talk about its influence on their battery. Have you noticed a difference in your battery life after making that tweak?

I only calibrated once, and that plus some other simple tweaks i saw great results. I usually get about 20+ hours of medium use(A few calls, non-stop texting, occasional game or youtube video, and checking email every couple of hours). If you want to see what I did you can click the link in my sig.

it gets rid of the battery information stored within the os so that the phone reads the battery charge correctly. this was common practice for vibrant owners after flashing a new ROM. I've seen people saying that this phone has horrid battery drivers so I dunno how that will effect the battery stats but after a factory reset and deleting the stats my battery is double what I was getting on my vibrant.
I only do this after flashing a new ROM or in this case upon getting and setting the phone up. I would do it again if I swapped the battery for a different one also. just charge to 100%, reboot into clockwork, advanced menu, wipe battery stats, done. it DOES NOT increase battery life. it only allows the phone to read the battery more accurately which would keep the phone from thinking its dying when it still has considerable charge left. that's why you hear about people seeing their battery life read 1% yet the phone last for hours.
I only calibrated once because I realized the values were off a bit.
Tried every battery trick in the book. If you actually want to use the phone, nothing will help. Android is a battery eating nightmare. Hopefully one day the platform will mature so adults can use it as a business phone. I think I am returning mine or giving it to my kid.
I did a single calibration and am now seeing 20+ hours with decent usage. Fully charge the battery, use battery calibration app to erase settings, let it drain till it shuts itself off, try pressing the power button to make sure there's no remaining charge, then fully charge to 100% with the phone still off (you can tap the power button while its plugged in and off to briefly bring up a battery indicator on the screen with out actually powering up). Its true that lithium ion batteries last longer if they don't go through fully discharge cycles, but thats referring to repeated occurances, not a rare or occasional situation. And when calibrating, draining from 100 to 0 is the best method of getting a good calibration. Additionally, while its healthy to do the mid charges most of the time, about once a month or so you should do a full drain. This helps keep the calibration accurate (remember that android will continue to modify the file, albeit at a greatly reduced level after the initial discharge of a new calibration, hence why that occasional full discharge is valuable). A full discharge once a month won't significantly reduce your battery's life expectancy.

Draining a li-ion battery past the safe shut off is an easy way to damage or completely kill the battery. Your phone is set to shutdown before complete discharge for this reason. The full discharge then charge method was for NiCd batteries. This has no use for lithium-ion batteries.

True, but the method of attempting to power back up won't actually drain it past the safe point. The point is bad calibrations (either from the factory or by an incomplete calibration) can cause the OS to shut the phone down prematurely during your new calibration run (before the actual safe cut off), resulting in the calibration being off scale. When you attempt to power the phone back on, if it is at the true safety cut off, it won't reactivate, where as if the calibration from before was skewed, it will allow it to boot back up and finish draining down to the safety cut off. This is in line with the reports of people having incorrect readings on battery %, where they have a low number, reset the phone, and suddenly seem to jump up 10 or 20%.

I honestly don't know if it made any difference on battery life, as I did the battery calibration before I installed the fix. At any rate, I get much better battery life after the calibration for certain.

I dunno about this phone but I know the galaxy s can still be powered on after the safe shut off and drained completely. People were doing exactly that and messing their batteries up. I would hate for people to misunderstand your post and end up making the same mistake. So the LG doesnt let you power on after the safe shutdown unless its connected to a charger? If so thats pretty good. In any case its a lot easy to just use clockwork, terminal emulator, or any other app to delete battery stats once your charged to 100%. No need to drain first

I hadn't heard about the Galaxy S phones having that issue. Like I said, I came from the Eris and this method was the way to go with that phone, so perhaps its a manufacturer dependent function. In any case, I agree that the cwm method is better, but I meant my post to be accessable by those who may not have taken that particular plunge yet, since it only requires root. Thanks for the info though; its good to know in advanced that the safety shut off being unavoidable isn't a guarentee on all phones (though frankly it should be).
EDIT: Not sure if I'm reading it wrong, but it sounds like you thought I meant to drain the battery before calibrating, which isn't true; all you need to do precalibration is have the charge at 100%. The only time I was suggesting to drain it is during the actual calibration run, so that Android has a full scale of your battery's range. If thats not what you meant, than ignore this edit. Just wanted to make sure I was explaining myself correctly.
Also, if you open your battery cover and look at the battery, it's not suppose to go above 40 degrees celsius, or 104 degrees fahrenheit. I found that the temperature often goes past this, especially when watching movies for extended periods of time, or playing games, which leads to a significant decrease in battery life because heat and li-ion batteries are not a good combination.

You can use SetCPU to make a profile according to battery temperature and underclock it when it gets to 40 degrees or something. I have profiles for when the screen is off and for temperature.

[Q] The best way to calibrate a new akku?

Hello Guys, i bought a new mugen akku and dunno what´s the best way to calibrate it.
There are a few things that are confusing me:
1.Mugen Instructions: "Never drain battery to 0%"
(but that´s required for calibration, isn´t it?)
2.the battery got its full power after a few charges/discharges
(so would it be better to wait to calibrate the akku when it got its full power?)
So finally, should i wait with calibration or do it at the beginning? I think one time is necessary to let it go down to 0%.
So what are your advice?

The way I calibrate mine is to discharge it completely so it turns off by itself (normally happens around 1 or 2%) then plug it into the charger and let it charge completely to 100%. Note that the LED will turn green at 90% .. so its not done yet!

You are just calibrating the battery meter on the phone, not the battery. People constantly abuse the terminology.
You don't need to drain the battery to zero, because the battery meter is not even remotely that accurate in the best of circumstances. Draining to 10 or even 20% is no different than draining to zero.
What CAN happen if you drain to zero, is you you may trip the safety circuit on the battery, and render the battery unable to take a charge, thereby rendering it useless. Its not very likely, and safeguards on the phone are designed to prevent this, but plenty of people on here have had it happen. Full power cycles (draining to zero) also shortens the long term life of the battery. Especially considering there is NO value added to draining the battery to zero, there is no point it doing so intentionally, and taking an unnecessary risk.
Just charge your battery to 100%, let it sit on the charger for a while after full, to make sure its really topped off. Then use the phone until 10-20%. Repeat this a couple times. You can also go into recovery and clear battery stats before you charge/discharge. But I haven't noticed this to make much of a difference.

Draining the battery to a literal 0% is almost impossible. Lithium ion batteries do not allow devices to utilize all the juice in a the battery. Once a device shuts off and tell you the battery is "dead", there's actually a bit more juice that is only used by the battery to prevent the battery's level from becoming too low.
Think of it like space partitions in hard drives. While you can use 100% of a single partition in a hard drive. There will still be space left over in the other partition.
Now what mugen means is to not allow the battery to reach the 0% of the ENTIRE battery. In order to make that happen you would have to discharge the battery until your device doesn't turn on and then NOT charge the battery for a very long period of time. I'm talking weeks and months of no charge whatsoever. Other than that, feel free to allow your phone to die and charge it back up. This in conjuction with deleting your battery stats file will speed up the calibration process.

What is supposed to happen with the failsafes on the device and what ACTUALLY happens unfortunately are not one and the same. There have been plenty of people here that have let their batteries drain to zero, and then the battery will no longer take a charge.
True, the battery is not actually zero voltage. But its low enough that the safety circuit on the battery will prevent it from accepting a charge. The phone is SUPPOSED to prevent the voltage from dipping that low, but it doesn't always work. So the only way to bring the battery back to life, is with a special battery meter with a "boost" function. Since the vast majority of us do not have access to such a thing, the battery is effectively dead, as buying one is likely cheaper and easier than getting access to such a battery meter.
As I've already mentioned, this is unlikely to happen. But its happened to at least a few people with our phone, and I've seen it happen to other XDA users with other devices. No point in playing probabilities, if it happens to you, it sucks and it doesn't matter how "almost impossible" its supposed to be. As I already discussed, the battery meters on phones are not even close to accurate enough to read single, or even 5% battery increments. So draining to zero is not any more beneficial than draining to 10%. No benefit in draining to zero, so why risk it?
I have learned the hard way that discharging lithium ion batteries below 20% is the fastest way to kill them early! (greatly shorten their life)

How to make your battery last longest?

So I just got my galaxy s3. I haven't turned it on yet. But I heard that you were supposed to charge it fully and then let it die. Then charge it fully again and then start using it. That when. Doing this you will optimize your battery so it will charge faster, hold a charge faster, and just last longer.
Is this myth or fact? And if fact how do I do the steps so I get it right?

Now is this ALWAYS the case?
To clarify what I am asking I am saying does it always harm the life of the lithium ion cell by letting die fully? Like even after 6 or 8 or 12 months of owing the phone (or any device), not just one the first charge. This could be very useful for further reference...:good:
There are some things can help increase life of litium batteries. First, don't let it go down to 0% as mentioned, keep not lower than 50%. Once per month it is recommended to discharge battery to 0% and then charge it to 100% again for device callibration.
This is a good question. I always thought that by discharging and charging batteries at full cycles, you would make their total useful life last longer.
In fact, this happened to me with a notebook, which I used to play with and charging at the same time. In the end, the battery lasted for a few minutes and I had to sell it.
But in all: is this really true? I would also like to know if is truth or myth.

Yes yes!!
This happened too (as funny as it is) my grandma. She would ALWAYS have her little nnotebook plugged in and eventually it drained. I found out because one day I took it off the plug a d it died while I was on facebook after around 7 minutes.
So I bought a new battery and now she charfes iit and takes it off the plug to use it and twice a month she lets it die and it has worked

1) don't keep live wallpapers
2) keep the brightness to the lowest possible
3) don't charge while playing games or even use the phone
4) don't use apps which run in the background and drain the batter
5) all the suggestions given in the above posts lol

Sir i just want to ask If we charge our battery even if its above 20% or if the battery icon is not yet colored red will it affect our battery life in the future? Or we should only charge our battery when it is below 20-15% ?

It is true if you have a phone like Nokia 3310 if you do not have a NiMH battery do not do that you will lose time also you do not need to "format" a Li-Ion battery
read about lazy-battery effect on Wikipedia
rooting you phone to underclock/undervolt should also help out battery life pretty significantly ^_^
Lithium ion cells do not suffer from the "memory" effect as older rechargeable batteries. You do not have to let the battery run all the way down then fully charge it again to get the best performance that way, that was for the older types of batteries (again so you wouldn't get that "memory" effect) matter of fact its rather harmful to the battery to run it all the way down.
Charge the battery as often as you want no matter at what level it is. If you are going to do some high power **** (play a game, watch a movie) then plug it if if you have a charger around. The longer the battery stays at a high level the better for it. Try not to let your battery run your phone at a low state (charge it asap). Its ok to leave it on the charger even after its fully charged. Your phone and charger are smart enough to know when to start/stop charging the battery. This will ensure a long life for your battery.
...as for your phone...simple rules...if you are not using it( DATA, WIFI, GPS, SYNC, BLUETOOTH) then turn it off. Screen is the biggest battery drainer...KEEP IT ON AUTO!...darker themes really help alot...make your screen go off at 30 sec. or less. Have fun with your new phone homie.
