[Q] Questions: Upgraded my MZ604 UK WiFi Xoom to US 3.1-ICS 4.0.4

I put off the upgrade in the hope the UK stock update would come but eventually changed my mind as all posts seemed to say ICS was alot better.
Have a few things I would like people to comment on.
Used the LAIOT tool which made it relativly straight forward. Few hiccups but got there.
1) Part of the process was to ROOT.
ICS installed Titanium Backup it says its not ROOTED.
2) I'm surprised at how stripped down the US stock ROM is in terms of bloat (which is good).
No stock file manager.
3) I must say I don't see any real benefit on the ICS upgrade and would be happy to be pointed to what they are.
4) Still unable to delete files from memory card.
5) I used Astro to backup my Pre-ICS xoom and hoped to be able to restore APPS but I assume this was just if the upgrade failed and I went back to HONEYCOMB as Astro doesn't see the files.
6) I read that boot-up speed was almost instant, but it seems to be the same albeit with a fancy video splash before screen up.
7) not sure if I need to relock bootloader or if I have already as part of LAIOT process. Too many threads and info.

Hi there. Without doubt. Ics is a lot better.
I am not sure your rooting we t well with custom ics rom. Here is the best rom with procedure for your xoom wifi.

Sorry don't understand second line of your reply.
That ROM procedure assumes you have knowledge of recovery such as CWM which I don't unless with full instructions.
That thread is way to long to go through but glancing it seems some aspects are still reliant on info that Google hasn't released so the ROMs are incomplete.
My post says that with the stock from I really can't see change from Honey to ICS.
That being said then why would I then go to the TeamEOS ROM, I ask so as to be convinced not to disrespect.

So I think this thread is pretty common to most other phones, but I couldn't really find a stickied one or anything of the sorts? After using the search function to the best of my ability, I would like to begin a thread on what's most important after rooting.
From what I understand, Supersu and BusyBox are a must (taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296&highlight=no+such+file+or+directory)
Then, I went to remove the animation and music from startup (taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1645818&highlight=

Getting TWRP, from their website: I used the automated one because I tried downloading and launching with no luck. Backing up currently, very easy through Goo Manager; all I did was click "boot to recovery" or whatever from the main page of the app. (edit3)

I humbly submit all the knowledge I have of my phone to the rest of the users. My technical experience is limited, am scared of recommended bootloader unlocks, but am willing to help bundle for newbies like me.

I'm in a little bit of a pickle because I left my phone alone and luckily when I came back, I stopped the system update download at about 50%. So I'm paranoid to turn on any radio function. Would you happen to know if the methods you used above will disable the system update (permanently)?
As soon as I can get off this dilemma, I do want to try to unlock the bootloader, though it is a bit intimidating to realize that I could break my warranty if I fail...

Do a factory reset for now then run setup, after that go to system updates and uncheck, auto update or what ever it says. That will hold you off for now

If your rooted, use a file manager, go to the /cache folder and delete the chunk of the ota that downloaded, then untick sys. Updates in settings. Just a 2nd method.

if your rooted iI would do a factory reset and then use the one click unlock bootloader method to unlock the bootloader. then from the play store download Goo manager and from there flash the twrp recovery and finally flash a custom roms i recommend the nocturnal rom

Can either of you point me to where to figure out all these rom things? To be honest, I just want to ask you guys straight out but I feel that's disrespectful to all the knowledge you have. I'm seeking more information about how the flashing thing works, whether it wipes everything outside of my twrp backup and/or whether they're exclusive to anything to that effect. Specifically, I'm debating between "[ROM][8/3] - Stock Rooted AT&T 2.20.502.7 - Android 4.0.4 - Odex or De-Odex", "[ROM][AT&T][08/18/12][2.29.207.1]Sandstorm_v2.1", and "[ROM][8/17] Stock Rooted 2.29.207.1 - Sense 4.1! o2 German Carrier!"

Going from jailbreaking to rooting.

I am a noobie to all that is Android... I am usually on an iPhone/iPod, but I decided for my upgrade why downgrade to the iPhone 5 when I could get the SGIII?
So, anyways... I am new to rooting and how to add anything on it after the root is done... and I need some help...
I have my SGIII rooted and all and it has been sweet. However, I do not want to add a custom ROM because of the loss of certain features on the device and a higher risk of brick.
I have to ask... Am I able to theme the stock touchwiz ROM differently without a big risk of brick? Or can I at all?
And, with the SGIII being on verizon... my notification toggles do not include a WiFi toggle! I want one on there, and I am not sure how to add it...

First, congrats on getting the s3! It's an amazing device and definitely an upgrade.
What do you mean by losing features by flashing a custom ROM? If anything, you would gain features. I would recommend flashing CleanROM, it's basically the way your phone is now with a bunch of bloatware removed (and it has a WiFi toggle, and others which are customizable) for better performance and battery life. I know you said you don't really want to, but if you read and follow instructions, you'll be perfectly fine. Besides, it's what having an android is all about!
As for that WiFi toggle mod, you would simply download it, reboot into recovery, and flash it. Just don't flash anything not meant for the i535! That's how you end up with a paper weight.

I was referring to some of the Samsung features that you would lose when switching to a new ROM. I thought I read that you lose some...
I may look into putting a ROM onto it... I just am sketchy on having myself a brick... I have the extended insurance and all, I just dont want to ruin it so soon since I just got it.
How about themes though? Can I theme the stock ROM?

You can change the icons, if that's what you mean. Check out an app called desktop visualizer.

Basically the only ways you brick the phone is of you flash an international ROM. The other potential way to brick is a power outage if you are flashing with Odin and the primary or secondary boot loader are in the process of being flashed.
If you are going to flash anything, back up your imei following the sticky thread
If you get the "unauthorized software return to Verizon message" don't panic. Odin can bring you back.
Its hard but not impossible to brick this phone. If you take your time, read, and always verify that the file you are going to flash is for the i535 it is very hard to brick.
Rooting essentially means you have administer rights. It doesn't come with any cydia equivalent as (almost) all apps that use root are in the play store.
My current favorite ROM is carbon rom which brings all the android 4.2.1 features to the table including group SMS (finally), lock screen widgets, and enhanced Google now. You will lose some touchwiz features though many can be replicated with 3rd party play store apps.

I had told myself that I wasnt going to risk it, but I think you have me convinced... Cause I do want to get different with it...
Which is why I was looking for full themes for the stock ROM.

You must be talking about the TouchWiz features like smart stay, s beam, TW camera...etc. As long as you flash a TouchWiz ROM, you shouldn't lose those features. You would lose those features if you flashed an AOSP ROM (which is what you see on devices like the Galaxy Nexus or Nexus 4).

synergy, beans galaxy mod, almost all others in the development section
read and see what suirs your needs

Clean ROM and csrom are probably closest to stock. Galaxy mod and syngergy get good reviews it seems if you want something a bit different.
Kindacrapmods is neat too to give touch wiz Roms an aosp appearance if you prefer.

Plus, say that I were to put a ICS ROM rather than the 4.1.1 JB I have right now... or even a 4.2 JB ROM would I just flash it like normal as if I were rooting my device for the first time?

Welcome to Android, where you are "free!," lol.
You should always have backup of files, photos, apps + data, personal data, documents, etc on your external sd, computer, cloud, etc. Also making a Nandroid Backup would be highly advisable before you flash anything.
Flashing between roms usually just wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, (I wipe system as well to be sure a cleaner start). Someone correct me if that is not the case. I remember on Fsacinate, it was somewhat a pain going from major version jump.

I don't see why you would go back to ICS lol. Definitely do a nandroid backup before each new ROM flash, there's always a chance something could go wrong. It's always good to backup your media, but if you do everything correctly, then your media won't be touched.
If you flash a 4.2 ROM for the first time, your SD card is basically going to be moved into a new folder called "0" and you may panic... lol. It's supposed to happen though, it had to with the multiuser feature (which is only present on tablets).

Check out App2Zip also. It'll create a flashable .zip file of your apps that you can flash after flashing the ROM. I've never been a big fan of TiBu, but App2Zip does a good job. The biggest hassle about flashing brand new ROMs is getting your setup back to how you had it, but that only takes 10 - 30 minutes and is well worth the added functionality. I personally love having native USB tethering and WiFi hotspot. Also much faster performance on many ROMs as well. I personally LOVE the Darthstalker ROM, it's farther away from your stock JB experience, but one of the fastest ROMs out there, especially on top of a kernel like galaxy KOR. But you can get into flashing kernels after you have some ROM experience ;] (it's actually a lot easier). Just ALWAYS make a backup with ClockworkMod or TW first! Preferably to an external card. Then if something messes up you can just recover to your backup and have everything back to normal, it's literally a time machine for your phone. There are a lot of great support threads here. I almost bricked my phone the first time I tried to root it, but you're already past that part so flashing ROMs and kernels are much easier. Have fun!

If you flash Synergy it will back up your IMEI for you automatically. Just copy that backup to you extSdCard and you will always have it. For getting your feet wet with android and from you've posted so far just stay away from AOSP for now and you will be fine and you will be amazed at the control/options you have now.

You're already rooted so don't worry about doing that again, but you need to unlock the boot loader. Look for an app called EZ unlock somewhere on here or RootzWiki (use version 1.2 since the newer one had a problem I believe). It's as simple as clicking unlock, then you're good.

I have CleanROM put on it right now, I am looking to add some MODs now though I think...
I want to keep TW and its standard features... but I also want to get creative with it...
Since I now have deodex I should be able to still add some cool MODs now right?
Oh, and how stable are launchers? If I were to get Apex launcher and assign it to my home key would there be any issues at any time with that and my original home?

Noob Root Question

Hi all. I want to keep this short and simple. I have the I9020A with 4.1.2, and a couple of days to spare. My phone is running OK and I am happy, but if I could improve the performance or experience it would only be better. How long does it take to root and install a new ROM (or so they call it) like CM 10.1, for a beginner like me? And, very briefly in one sentence, what are the main benefits from rooting and gains I could see from a ROM like CM 10.1?

Do you have any previous experience with rooting?
I got my phone last week (had experience with two previous phones and it took me 30 minutes to have it rooted, cwm-ed and cm10.1-ed. nexusshacks.com helped me very much

About an hour for an average total beginner to figure out how, then only 10minutes to flash a new pre-rooted rom. Read the changelog of your desired ROM so you know why you're flashing it, read their corresponding threads.
The main reason i first rooted my nexus s is because i heard it was the best-sounding android phone due to its built-in wolfson amplifier, and the only way to unleash it's true power is by rooting and installing voodoo sound app. Another thing is, custom roms provide the feature where you can use the volume buttons to seek music tracks. So for a music lover like me, i really benefit from custom roms.

A few things, the first step you will have to do is unlock the bootloader. That one setup will wipe all partitions back to a factory state (just stock OS of what ever variety you are on). Be prepared, you can back up your sdcard via a PC, and use the new app carbon to backup your user apps and data if you like (it is the only app that can do that for an unrooted user that I know of). There benefits to rooting, but we would have to know what you hope to gain with it to let you know if it is worth it for you. Most of us that root and rom do it for one reason, to get a better user experience. So a boost in performance or battery life. Added user options within android like notification power control buttons or added lockscreen targets.

No I actually don't have any previous experience with rooting (the most I've done is manually installed an update). And I am glad to hear that it takes around an hour, I thought it'd take a day. As long as it gives me better performance and a few extra features, I'm down for it!
So after I unlock the bootloader, what do I do next regarding the ROM and kernel? Do I just need a ROM, or do I have to get a new "kernel" too? And how come some ROMS are named after 4.2.2 (or the latest version), whereas others like CM is at version 10.1? I am thinking of getting CM 10.1 because that's the most I hear about, I hope it is stable and good. Any thoughts?

Writing from memory (I only did it once, yes it is that simple):
1. Unlock bootloader
2. Install a recovery (Never used anything else than ClockworkMod)
3. Install ROM.
Everything is reversible, in case you need to take it to the service. Also, don't get scared if something goes a bit wrong. For example, the first time I rebooted into recovery, the phone showed a red triangle. But I remained calm, searched about what was happening and I found the solution. Just always be careful to flash only device specific stuff. Be aware: there is nexus s and nexus s 4G!

It doesnt matter on which version you are on atm, you can flash whatever version you like!
4.2.2 is officially not available for the ns but as you can see we have amazing devs which make it work anyway...

Thank you!! I just flashed CM 10.1 Nightly...loving it atm! It has exactly those features that I wanted..Phone runs overall better too (at least for now).

What is the latest Root Method for SM-P900 us version?

Looking through many post, all of them seem rather old, Im finally ready to root my tablet, Im tired of all of the lag I get and it seems as Samsung has let the 12.2 pro die.

Yep. My faith in Samsung hardware is hit or miss, but my faith in them having too many models for them to keep up with is starting to wane.
Anyways, I had no problem getting TWRP on it, and flashing SU. Just follow the post and if it doesn't show up on your computer, try other USB ports. For some reason these samsungs are picky. I had to try three USB ports to get it to register in Odin. After that it was no problem. I verified it with JRummy's tool, and have run other root apps, and it took just fine.
I wasn't able to get xposed working, but that might be an issue with the stock ROM. No big deal though. Backups, moving apps to SD, and such, are all capable with root and TWRP, though it would have been more tidy to have the SD card as an extension of the on-board, I can live without it.
If you need my stock ROM build info it's P900UEU1COI1_P900XAR1COI1 (cellular south). There are two US ones I see available for 5.0.2, and have no idea what the difference is, but that one works fine for me. So if you have to Odin first, or after, that one seemed to go well for my US P900. Use that info at your discretion, because I can't see your current build info.

Same build here.
Follow the directions carefully (you likely don't need to do the first area as you're already up to date), and you should be all set. Just remember to backup everything important first. Since you already have your info/apps in place, and aren't changing ROMS's, there isn't much to it. Don't forget to do a backup using TWRP after you have everything up and running. You'll want to download busybox from the app store, after you're rooted.
Careful if you decide to go with a custom ROM after. I didn't have much luck with cyanogen mod 13, because it knocked out a lot of my Spen needs, and there are a fair number of reports of random reboots on the one I tried. Hopefully that will change and I can update to 6.0.1 when/if it does.
For you, there shouldn't be a need to wipe data or factory reset, but if the lag continues you may want to wipe your cache's once you have your nandroid backup.
