Noob Root Question - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. I want to keep this short and simple. I have the I9020A with 4.1.2, and a couple of days to spare. My phone is running OK and I am happy, but if I could improve the performance or experience it would only be better. How long does it take to root and install a new ROM (or so they call it) like CM 10.1, for a beginner like me? And, very briefly in one sentence, what are the main benefits from rooting and gains I could see from a ROM like CM 10.1?

Do you have any previous experience with rooting?
I got my phone last week (had experience with two previous phones and it took me 30 minutes to have it rooted, cwm-ed and cm10.1-ed. nexusshacks.com helped me very much

About an hour for an average total beginner to figure out how, then only 10minutes to flash a new pre-rooted rom. Read the changelog of your desired ROM so you know why you're flashing it, read their corresponding threads.
The main reason i first rooted my nexus s is because i heard it was the best-sounding android phone due to its built-in wolfson amplifier, and the only way to unleash it's true power is by rooting and installing voodoo sound app. Another thing is, custom roms provide the feature where you can use the volume buttons to seek music tracks. So for a music lover like me, i really benefit from custom roms.

A few things, the first step you will have to do is unlock the bootloader. That one setup will wipe all partitions back to a factory state (just stock OS of what ever variety you are on). Be prepared, you can back up your sdcard via a PC, and use the new app carbon to backup your user apps and data if you like (it is the only app that can do that for an unrooted user that I know of). There benefits to rooting, but we would have to know what you hope to gain with it to let you know if it is worth it for you. Most of us that root and rom do it for one reason, to get a better user experience. So a boost in performance or battery life. Added user options within android like notification power control buttons or added lockscreen targets.

No I actually don't have any previous experience with rooting (the most I've done is manually installed an update). And I am glad to hear that it takes around an hour, I thought it'd take a day. As long as it gives me better performance and a few extra features, I'm down for it!
So after I unlock the bootloader, what do I do next regarding the ROM and kernel? Do I just need a ROM, or do I have to get a new "kernel" too? And how come some ROMS are named after 4.2.2 (or the latest version), whereas others like CM is at version 10.1? I am thinking of getting CM 10.1 because that's the most I hear about, I hope it is stable and good. Any thoughts?

Writing from memory (I only did it once, yes it is that simple):
1. Unlock bootloader
2. Install a recovery (Never used anything else than ClockworkMod)
3. Install ROM.
Everything is reversible, in case you need to take it to the service. Also, don't get scared if something goes a bit wrong. For example, the first time I rebooted into recovery, the phone showed a red triangle. But I remained calm, searched about what was happening and I found the solution. Just always be careful to flash only device specific stuff. Be aware: there is nexus s and nexus s 4G!
This is the video that helped me very much, from start to end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=4AHucGBZHMQ
Edit: i forgot to mention, do an efs backup. Needless to say i also forgot to make it...

Hi guys. I have successfully rooted my Nexus S now, using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782&page=3&nocache=1
Also thanks for that video posted above, it helped me in some places. It took a while, I'd say about 2 hours in total because I ran into some issues..(those instructions should really be updated)
Anyways, I have 4.1.2 atm..and on the ROMs under Android Development, they all say [4.2.2] .. does this mean I have to be on 4.2.2 to install these? I thought 4.2.2 wasn't available for the NS..

It doesnt matter on which version you are on atm, you can flash whatever version you like!
4.2.2 is officially not available for the ns but as you can see we have amazing devs which make it work anyway...

[Q] Questions about Note 10.1 Wi-fi only version

Hey guy I recently got a Galaxy Note 10.1, the Wi-Fi only version (N8010 I think?). I really want to get Jelly Bean on it as soon as possible. I know there are a ton of ROMS out there for the Wi-Fi/3G version and most people who have flashed those onto the Wi-Fi only version have been successful. I just had a few questions for you guys as I'm still a noob at this.
1. Do I have to root my tablet to be able to flash a ROM on it?
2. Is there a chance of bricking the tablet? Is there any danger involved?
3. Will I still get OTA updates when they become available?
4. Anyone have instructions on how to flash Jelly Bean onto it?
5. Where could I find ROMS that will work with my tablet?
Thank you guys for taking the time to answer. If any of you have any experience with the Wi-Fi only version let me know. Also I live in the US if that is of any importance.
The U.S. version of wifi only is the 8013. It is what I have. There is always a risk involved with everything you do, even breathing. Every breath you take you take the risk it is not poision and feel the benefits of not suficating our weigh the risk of being poisoned.
For flashing the roms on here you need a custom recovery, like cwm. There are guides on this in the development area. Darkman-rs has some very good stuff out. I have some stuff for the 8013 as well. Check out everything, get a good feel, make a backup of your stuff, like apps, nand backups, copy your internal memory to something else, whatever else you feel like doing. One day when you have nothing going on, sit around and play with things, talk to the google machine about stuff. I have done a lot to this tablet, nothing I couldnt recover from. Always have a backup on your external sd card just in case, like an extra sd card in case you wipe the one in your tablet
Oh, and have fun!
Also, the thread for the roms should have the info on installing.
i am using @smaw51 jb uk release custom gt 8013 version and its very smooth rom really love it and there is a thread on how to add more apps to the multiwindow launcher which makes this tablet even more amazing
follow the guides on how to root and install cwm recovery and then start flashing and enjoy this beast tablet ...lol
I have recently rooted my 8010 using "method 2" do you have to unlock the bootloader too before you can use a new kernel (I know there isn't any for my model yet) . I just haven't seen much mention of bootloader unlocking

Can you go to Settings > About device and see what your build number ends in? If it's LG4 then you will be getting Jelly Bean through Kies within a week.
Hey guys, thank you for all of the useful information. I honestly can't go into my settings right now because I don't have it yet. I bought it but am only getting it this weekend for my birthday. Then I'll be able to give you information about my device. What is the LG version?

CWM is super easy to install and obtain root (this was my first time using ODIN for anything). Simply follow the directions here (especially the part about turning Auto Reboot off): http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-no...t-galaxy-note-10-1-easiest-methodcwmmethod-2/
As for installing JB, I've got the 8010 version and I had no problem installing the older German version found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1909950&page=9 along with the build prop fix here (which eliminates the random reboot issues): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1909950&page=9
And once all that is done, don't forget to go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1985240 for all your Multi-Window app goodness!!

Was anyone able to use chainfire3D on JB?

Hi,
I still hesitate weather to flash Clean Rom or not.... it's not that I care much about loss of warranty, but I'm not familiar at all with these unlocking, rooting, flashing operations and not sure if I'll manage to do this flawless.
...so I still have a stupid hope that ASUS will solve all stock rom problems (lags, hiccups...etc) with JB 4.2.
Is it worth to wait and expect ASUS to update stock rom to the same level as Clean Rom is now (haven't seen myself ...only read in this forum)?

Read the guide threads. Invest some time to learn, you will be rewarded with a better tablet. (or an expensive brick, depending on how thoroughly you read the guides)

Unlikely. CleanROM contains so many tweaks and workarounds that are not suitable for inclusion in an official firmware.

Trust me, cleanrom is super fast and smooth. It's worth it. When JB 4.2 come out, Cleanrom will have a new build on 4.2 and it will be even faster. Stock rom will always far behind. Currently we have all the automated scripts that do the install for us, so not to worry too much how this.
1. Unlock (download the unlock app and run it. No risk here, either it worked or failed, no harm)
2. Install recovery script to pust custom recovery (double click on the bat file and watch it does the rest)
3. Boot into recovery, select "install" browser to the romzip file and swipe to install
Reboot...profit!! The only downside is warranty, will be void if unlock. There is no news that JB 4.2 will be available for our tf700, so I won't hold my breath for this.
To my mind easiest way to get CROMI Installed for noob is to follow instructions in this tutorial video http://youtu.be/iank8iYulzo .
As this video is not very fresh and there are alreadt new versions of ADB tool, TWRP and CROM...I'm not sure if I can go step by step using newer versions of particular software....
Can anybody confirm that I can follow instructions on this tutorial using ADB tool ver 6 for update to CROMI 3.2 ?

I wouldn't put much faith in any forthcoming incursions of Android.
Just custom ROM your tab and be happy.

Ok then... few questions before unlocking...
Kernel.
What kernel shoud I choose? Generaly my target is to speed up browsing and to have battery life as long as possible ....so far as I understand I should choose Asus stock kernel? Is this right?
DPI.
What is stock DPI of TF700? I read in some posts that some people had problems with some apps because of choosing wrong DPI. What DPI should I choose in oreder to have as less probs as possible?
FSYNC.
Does disabling of FSYNC has significant impact on performace? Is it worth to mess with it?
Thanks in advance.

Kinda enjoyed not dealing with flashing, wiping, reinstalling, etc. all the time, I did that with my last phone what seemed like every day. I just couldn't stand HTC Sense and the bloatware, had to do it.
Unlike most here I don't mind the stock Asus firmware on this thing so I figured I'd save some free time and not mess around with anything. Now I'm kinda bored and really wanna see what this device is made of.
I'll probably get my SG3 going next!

Trust me:
1) installing a custom Rom on the tf700 makes this bad boy fly! It is really night and day
2) Installing a custom Rom on a (contract free) SIII is super easy. Took me 30 seconds to root, no need to unlock and boom. You are ready to flash CWM (highly recommended for the SIII) and there you go: a cool custom rom for the SIII
(PS: For the tf700 I'd recommend to use TWRP as a recovery)

I'm in the same situation (TF700 is sitting at home now, freshly delivered this morning and I'm fighting the urge to have a 'family crisis' that needs my attention and ditch work). I started a thread to try an pull together an easy list with links to get from un-rooted, locked, stock to custom pleasure New (virgin/stock) TF700 to CROMI 3.2 - is this right? as well as check before I started that everything was right.
I think that I've got it sorted in post 6 and have spent a lot of time trawling the various forum posts. In the video you mention from saugstauber / Dominik is really good and he notes that as he hasn't rooted his device prior to starting that he needs to push the recovery via the ADB tool rather than GooManager (that needs root).
I hope to get cracking on it later and will try to document each stage of the process and write it up for the XDA community with some explanations of each stage.
I did it yesterday, it was super easy. No hiccups at all
Started with CleanROM, then decided to try BB7, but it was still a little too buggy. CleanROM seems more stable, back to that for now.
So far, I don't notice too much of a difference performance wise. It's still not smooth at all switching between applications and opening and closing them. Scrolling while browsing isn't any better either. Both my Kindle Fire and SG3 are still much smoother than this.
Oh well, I'm glad to be able to get rid of the bloatware at least.

Hm... strange... my experience with clean rom is very good....compared with stock rom browsing became pleasure...of course it is not perfect...but now I feel that I have different tablet.
Earlier l was getting "wait/close" message several times per day...now it's gone. Scrolling through pages is A LOT smoother. And generaly typing lagis almost gone...switching throw apps is a lot quicker. Youtube shows videos with any pauses.
I was in the exactely same situation of the OP, but decided to go to the flashing world for my new TF700.
I followed carefully every instruction a the flashing of CleanROM went well and now I have a new tablet. Ir is now really smooth and most of the lags are gone.
For you that are still hesitating I highly recommend unlocking and flashing CleanROM to see that you have a top device.
For your information the steps I took:
1) Unlocked
2) Installed ADB on my computer. Struggled a bit to set the path (which was not exactley the same as in the tutorial) but all went well.
3) Installed drivers via ADB tools.
3) Checked if ADB was correctly installed and the tablet recognized by pc.
4) Flashed TWRP via ADB.
5) Backed up device using TWRP.
6) Copied ROM to the tablet internal memory.
7) Flashed ROM, choosing modified stock kernel by thats_ok and kept fsync enabled.
8) Enjoyed a new tablet.

Going from jailbreaking to rooting.

I am a noobie to all that is Android... I am usually on an iPhone/iPod, but I decided for my upgrade why downgrade to the iPhone 5 when I could get the SGIII?
So, anyways... I am new to rooting and how to add anything on it after the root is done... and I need some help...
I have my SGIII rooted and all and it has been sweet. However, I do not want to add a custom ROM because of the loss of certain features on the device and a higher risk of brick.
I have to ask... Am I able to theme the stock touchwiz ROM differently without a big risk of brick? Or can I at all?
And, with the SGIII being on verizon... my notification toggles do not include a WiFi toggle! I want one on there, and I am not sure how to add it...
Here is a link to a thread about one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1775235
I am running Jelly Bean 4.1.1.
Help?
First, congrats on getting the s3! It's an amazing device and definitely an upgrade.
What do you mean by losing features by flashing a custom ROM? If anything, you would gain features. I would recommend flashing CleanROM, it's basically the way your phone is now with a bunch of bloatware removed (and it has a WiFi toggle, and others which are customizable) for better performance and battery life. I know you said you don't really want to, but if you read and follow instructions, you'll be perfectly fine. Besides, it's what having an android is all about!
As for that WiFi toggle mod, you would simply download it, reboot into recovery, and flash it. Just don't flash anything not meant for the i535! That's how you end up with a paper weight.

I was referring to some of the Samsung features that you would lose when switching to a new ROM. I thought I read that you lose some...
I may look into putting a ROM onto it... I just am sketchy on having myself a brick... I have the extended insurance and all, I just dont want to ruin it so soon since I just got it.
How about themes though? Can I theme the stock ROM?
You can change the icons, if that's what you mean. Check out an app called desktop visualizer.

Basically the only ways you brick the phone is of you flash an international ROM. The other potential way to brick is a power outage if you are flashing with Odin and the primary or secondary boot loader are in the process of being flashed.
If you are going to flash anything, back up your imei following the sticky thread
If you get the "unauthorized software return to Verizon message" don't panic. Odin can bring you back.
Its hard but not impossible to brick this phone. If you take your time, read, and always verify that the file you are going to flash is for the i535 it is very hard to brick.
Rooting essentially means you have administer rights. It doesn't come with any cydia equivalent as (almost) all apps that use root are in the play store.
My current favorite ROM is carbon rom which brings all the android 4.2.1 features to the table including group SMS (finally), lock screen widgets, and enhanced Google now. You will lose some touchwiz features though many can be replicated with 3rd party play store apps.

Hmm, can anyone toss me a few of the most stable/featured ROMs for the i535 in comparison to stock?
I had told myself that I wasnt going to risk it, but I think you have me convinced... Cause I do want to get different with it...
Which is why I was looking for full themes for the stock ROM.
You must be talking about the TouchWiz features like smart stay, s beam, TW camera...etc. As long as you flash a TouchWiz ROM, you shouldn't lose those features. You would lose those features if you flashed an AOSP ROM (which is what you see on devices like the Galaxy Nexus or Nexus 4).

read and see what suirs your needs
Clean ROM and csrom are probably closest to stock. Galaxy mod and syngergy get good reviews it seems if you want something a bit different.
Kindacrapmods is neat too to give touch wiz Roms an aosp appearance if you prefer.

Anyone care to add to skype or anything of the sort so that I may be easily guided? I would highly appreciate the assistance.
And my GSIII is currently rooted with quite a bit of photos, contact, and personal data... Should I worry about getting that information off before flashing a new ROM?
Plus, say that I were to put a ICS ROM rather than the 4.1.1 JB I have right now... or even a 4.2 JB ROM would I just flash it like normal as if I were rooting my device for the first time?
Welcome to Android, where you are "free!," lol.
You should always have backup of files, photos, apps + data, personal data, documents, etc on your external sd, computer, cloud, etc. Also making a Nandroid Backup would be highly advisable before you flash anything.
Flashing between roms usually just wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, (I wipe system as well to be sure a cleaner start). Someone correct me if that is not the case. I remember on Fsacinate, it was somewhat a pain going from major version jump.

I don't see why you would go back to ICS lol. Definitely do a nandroid backup before each new ROM flash, there's always a chance something could go wrong. It's always good to backup your media, but if you do everything correctly, then your media won't be touched.
If you flash a 4.2 ROM for the first time, your SD card is basically going to be moved into a new folder called "0" and you may panic... lol. It's supposed to happen though, it had to with the multiuser feature (which is only present on tablets).

Check out App2Zip also. It'll create a flashable .zip file of your apps that you can flash after flashing the ROM. I've never been a big fan of TiBu, but App2Zip does a good job. The biggest hassle about flashing brand new ROMs is getting your setup back to how you had it, but that only takes 10 - 30 minutes and is well worth the added functionality. I personally love having native USB tethering and WiFi hotspot. Also much faster performance on many ROMs as well. I personally LOVE the Darthstalker ROM, it's farther away from your stock JB experience, but one of the fastest ROMs out there, especially on top of a kernel like galaxy KOR. But you can get into flashing kernels after you have some ROM experience ;] (it's actually a lot easier). Just ALWAYS make a backup with ClockworkMod or TW first! Preferably to an external card. Then if something messes up you can just recover to your backup and have everything back to normal, it's literally a time machine for your phone. There are a lot of great support threads here. I almost bricked my phone the first time I tried to root it, but you're already past that part so flashing ROMs and kernels are much easier. Have fun!
If you flash Synergy it will back up your IMEI for you automatically. Just copy that backup to you extSdCard and you will always have it. For getting your feet wet with android and from you've posted so far just stay away from AOSP for now and you will be fine and you will be amazed at the control/options you have now.

If you don't want to flash the entire Synergy ROM you can use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30679476&postcount=5732
I originally rooted my device without unlocking my bootloader because I didnt see myself putting a custom ROM on my device...
Is there anything special I would do to go about putting a ROM on it now? Or would I just go through the rooting process as I did before, but just unlock my bootloader this time?

You're already rooted so don't worry about doing that again, but you need to unlock the boot loader. Look for an app called EZ unlock somewhere on here or RootzWiki (use version 1.2 since the newer one had a problem I believe). It's as simple as clicking unlock, then you're good.
Edit: Here it is http://rootzwiki.com/index.php?/top...-1.4---Easiest-way-to-unlock-your-bootloader!

Thanks for the help! I actually just figured it out right before you guys posted.
I have CleanROM put on it right now, I am looking to add some MODs now though I think...
I want to keep TW and its standard features... but I also want to get creative with it...
Since I now have deodex I should be able to still add some cool MODs now right?
Oh, and how stable are launchers? If I were to get Apex launcher and assign it to my home key would there be any issues at any time with that and my original home?

[Q] 2013 Verizon Galaxy S3 Stock Rooted Overclocking Help

First Post
I searched through the Galaxy S3 Forum and can't seem to find any current information and guide that would walk me through overclocking my phone. I want to be able to tweak voltage and overclock my phone to the 1.7-1.89 ghz area. I'm aware my mileage may vary on this but my real challenge is finding a current guide that will actually work.
Model: SCH-1535
Okay so a little background and information
I bought my phone on Black Friday and it came with ICS. Shortly after I updated to Jelly bean 4.1.1, then and now I have 4.1.2.
I have rooted my phone and installed pacman rom, via the following guide/s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-tQ05Zo_9U (How I rooted)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2028443 (How I installed PacMan Rom)
My next goal was to overclock my phone.
I tried following this guide, but ended up soft bricking my phone
So I freaked like a noob would freak, However I'm proud that I kept a cool head because I eventually found a guide that got me back to stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840030 (How I un-softbricked)
So I re-rooted my phone via the first link I provided and decided to stay back on my stock OS since I missed many of the features and samsung stuff I liked.
Just FYI, I never backed up my original OS as when I un-softbricked I had to find a stock OS online and it looks like I found a very early build of ICS but anyway I'm updated back to 4.1.2 JB and I am successfully rooted, Titanium backup says I'm completely rooted and I have superuser in a few apps I use.
My ultimate goal is to overclock my phone maximum and set a lower voltage minimum to help battery life as well. Everything I find on this seems to be dated back to June 2012 or July 2012 when the phone released and seems outdated and to not work on the newer JB updates out there. I think this needs to be revisited and a current process that is known-working be made forum knowledge.
So again, my first post, Thanks for reading, Hopefully someone can help. Hopefully the replies on this thread help many people out there seeking the same knowledge on their uber hard Verizon GS3 with it's locked bootloader.
Ahead of time Disclaimer, I do not hold anyone responsible with what happens to my phone if they give me advice to overclock my phone in good faith and something goes wrong. I take full responsibility for taking the risk with my device.
Thanks in advance
Just throwing this out there, I honestly didn't bother watching the youtube videos that you linked.
Have you unlocked your bootloader? You are rooted but you can not flash a kernel unless you have unlocked your bootloader. Otherwise you will be softbricked and need to use Odin to recover. Use the guide by open1your1eyes titled "[GUIDE] Root for Jelly Bean 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 OTA ***UPDATED 3/5***" if you still need to do so.
Once you've have unlocked your bootloader, there are a number of kernels to use depending on if you're going to stick with your stock rooted TW rom or AOSP. Find a kernel you like, flash it, then you can adjust your voltages and/or CPU speeds with apps like System Tuner, SetCPU, Trickster Mod, etc.
Voltages, are tricky depending on the type of cpu you have. You can check the type of CPU you have by following these steps here. Make sure to read the link included which directs you to post #1341 by Imoseyon on the cpu differences.

Overclocking is a lot easier as the previously mentioned apps can do that as long as the custom kernel supports it. As for undervolting some custom kernels are already undervolted by default. There is also this for the KT kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2144004

Thanks for your reply, those are the steps that I've actually followed to get rooted, the youtube video I linked linked to that specific thread and that's the steps I took to root my device
So, I apologize but I'm completely new to rooting and flashing custom roms and things to your smartphone, my last two phones were blackberries so I'm now on my first of many droids to come (dont like iphone). This question will sound stupid of me but is flashing clockwork mod and then flashing the BRBMB1 bootchain unlocking my bootloader? If so I've done this already. The current steps out there don't seem to work for me.
I dont understand the terminology of some of these thing but I can follow a guide well. So far I've tried flashing the INvisblek v2 Kernel through EZ-Recovery and it really messed me up. I can double check my methodology. I'm wondering if maybe I just had a bad flash and maybe it will work if I do it again, but I'm hoping someone who has recently gone through this can share what they did to get it working on Verizon GS3 SCH-1535 because verizon sure does go out of it's way to prevent tampering

Are both of those Kernels for overclocking? It looks like your second link seems to allow voltage tweaks, funny thing is before I started this thread I saw that thread but it didn't say anything about overclocking so to a noob like me what does kernel tweaking mean
I'll take a good look at those treads when I get home, I'm about to head home from work, thanks for your reply.

Well, first off, EZ-recovery isn't for flashing anything but a custom recovery. You flash kernels with the recovery just like you would with a ROM. It sounds like you're unlocked, and should be good to go.
Another thing to know/understand is that most custom kernels will support over/underclocking and many will support voltage settings. Most won't say they support clock changes because its almost understood for people who've been playing with this stuff for a while.
I will also say one last thing, and that is that you honestly shouldn't have much need to overclock this phone much at all. Its a very snappy devices, and especially if you can find a custom ROM that plays well with you. Overclocking will really more than anything lessen your battery life with the upside of slightly boosted performance (read: borderline negligible). At least in my experience.

This is my first Android device as well and like you my last device was a blackberry. The thing is when overclocking you must undervolt to compensate for the increase in performance as it is a detriment to the battery. The first link I posted also supports overclocking and undervolted as when you're are flashing it you're also flashing it's KT Tweaker app it also allows you to save your oc/uv setup or use the team's own setups that you have downloaded. Also I recommend an app called DS battery saver as it fully utilizes the phone's deep sleep mode. For the aforementioned app I suggest put it in slumberer mode as in 8 hours of off screen time you're only losing 1-5% of battery life.

Thanks for the reply too. I have one more question looking over those links it looks like there's two different types of things mentioned that I'm not clear on, what does AOSP and TW mean. Tw seems to refer to touchwiz. What exactly are those. Also from what you see do these seem compatible with my stock rom rooted SCH 1535? Thanks for all the help thus far.

TW is Touchwiz which is Samsung's UI while AOSP is android before any OEMs messes with it so it is basically stock Android. Since you are on Touchwiz the kernels made for it are your best bet.
So I wanted to update this thread I ended up flashing synergy ROM everything is solved. I'm not sure if this rom comes with a kernel that allows overclocking but after flashing I can overclock up to 1.9 gigahertz Thanks for everyone who gave feedback on this. Now that I have synergy installed I have the best of both worlds all of the Samsung things I like and even custom things that are awesome.

[Q] Need help flashing custom ROM

Hi Everyone,
As this if my first post just wanted to say that I'm relatively new to customizing my Verizon HTC One M8 and really tried to search around here as well as other places to find answers but I really just wound up getting confused and bogged up in all the different scenarios and things that worked in this version but don't know etc. so apologies if I'm asking a bunch of newbie questions I after a lot of hours I really just couldn't find an up to date comprehensive guide.
So basically I have a Verizon HTC One M8 running Android 4.4.4. and I want to install a custom ROM most likely the DigitalHigh GPE or Skydragon not sure which but regardless I just read a bunch of different guides and started getting frustrated when they didn't work (like going the HTCDev route to realize that that route isn't supported by Verizon or whatever). Currently I have Sunshine installed and am waiting to verify that I can move forward before paying for it.
My question is after I pay for and run sunshine whats the exact route I take to get to where I want to go? I've searched around and found guides but I don't want to be stuck with outdated information that might not work. Thanks a lot for any help you guys can give.

Since you are on 4.4.4 you first have to figure out if Sunshine will work on your phone, it's more recommended for users on 4.4.3 but you can still try as some people have had success. If it doesn't work, it will not charge so you don't have to worry. about paying and it not working.

Hey bud, we'll get you where you need to be. First off, unless it's the 4.4.4 under the Verizon forums, don't flash Skydragon as it is for the GSM version. I would recommend going with DHs, but beware *some* people have issues with data with that ROM. Here's the easiest way to get you where you need to be.
1. Go ahead and get S-off with sunshine. With S-off, you can flash RUUs.
2. Download this RUU and place it on your sd card, or use the executable method, both work flawlessly. Note that this will reset your phone, but you're flashing a ROM anyways. This is rooted. http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...ent/ruu-m8vzw-4-4-4-s-off-onlynewest-t2914914
3. Confirm root and download flashify from the playstore.
4. Flash the recovery of your choice (most, myself included, prefer TWRP)
Now you are rooted with a custom recovery and good to go. If you flash DHs GPE, you will need to update to the 5.0 firmware first for best results. To do this, just place it (https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95832962473400175) on your sd card and boot into hboot by turning off your device, then hold volume down and the power button until it boots into a white screen with multi-colored text. This is hboot. From there, the device should auto detect the firmware on your sd card and press volume up to flash it. Volume up once more to confirm it. To confirm that you are on the new firmware, go back into hboot and check the opendsp number, it should something other than 46.2.2. Delete the firmware from your sd card so hboot doen't keep prompting you to run it every time you boot into hboot. From here, you should be all good to flash DHs ROM. If there is anything else I can help with or you get stuck at any point, let me know and we'll figure it out.

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation! I suppose its worth mentioning that my end goal is to run a ROM that's close to stock Android 5. Certainly don't mind resetting my phone, I have my contacts and whatnot backed up and being my first android phone I have tons of crap I don't need on it anyway. That being said, would you recommend DH's ROM or another one for my needs? Also in step 2, to clarify, once I apply the RUU that will root my phone or will I have to do that with a separate method?
Also @The Stig 04 thanks for the heads up, I ran the test they have and it told me it would work with 4.4.4, certainly reassuring that they'll refund if it doesn't work so appreciate that

No problem buddy! DHs is GPE, so it'll be the closest to stock android that you can get right now, well Google's take on Android anyways. There are a few AOSP roms running around, but I personally have never had an AOSP ROM run in the past year that wasn't ridden with bugs. Plus DHs ROM has an almost completely working Sense camera, which I personally found as a plus since the quality of the 4 ultra pixels on AOSP is almost painful haha. I think another good rom that is actually Sense based but looks and functions a lot like stock Lollipop is Unsense. So step two where you run the RUU will actually redownload and install the same version of OS you have now but it will come rooted and no other further action will be needed to have root access. I found this to be the easiest way to go about it without having to use ADB to install TWRP and flash SU. It takes a few minutes longer since it has to reinstall the OS but is less steps than the ADB route and far easier to explain. Either one will provide the same result, I just prefer the simplicity of running the RUU

Right on, I'll probably stick with DH's ROM. Thanks again, I'm about to hunker down and start this process, lol I'm glad I made the switch but am mildly missing the days where I could just click a few buttons and have a Jailbroken iPhone.

I had an Ipone for about 3 months and never had the guts to modify to because I didn't know how to fix it if I broke it haha. There are a lot of individual steps but the process as a whole should go smoothly. Just follow the threads and you will be fine and if you get snagged on anything or need clarification, just let me know man!
