LOL, this thread actually made me laugh. Development is FAR from dead on the GS3, and won't be for a long time. There was still active (although slowed) development on my HTC Incredible two and half years after it released! There was even an official OTA for it from Verizon, more than 2 years after its release!
No, development for Galaxy S3 is not dead, not by a long shot. If your bored with your device and can afford to buy a new one out of pocket, the Galaxy Note II and and the HTC Droid DNA both look like solid devices. Otherwise, next spring will bring the Galaxy S4 and HTC's successor to the One X.

Not sure what you mean by dead
I would say that development on this phone is booming. Probably the exact opposite of what you were thinking. I would think I am not committing hyperbole when saying that it is probably one of the most currently worked on and tweaked phones right now. just look at the forums if you don't believe us.
I would also venture and say without much hesitation that the SG3 is probably one of the best (fastest, biggest and nicest screens, 4g, etc) phones out until the SG4 comes out q1-2 next year.

It's my opinion on the matter, compared to sammy
I've had 2 htc phones prior to getting my skyrocket. Things to note about htc:
Build quality = 7-8
Design = 8+
quality of materials = 9
Overall experience = 8
That being said... The one x looks and seems to be a great phone. Super fast, nice screen, great design, and cutting edge specs. The camera is supposed to be very nice, but htc doesn't use the known amoled display. Colors may be less vibrant but at 1280 x 720, you may not even notice. Would I ditch the skyrocket for one.... Maybe if I get to hold the phone and am impressed by it. Truth be told, you should stick with what you got and possibly get the next gen handset when it becomes available. One thing to note.... HTC usually give timely updates where they see fit. As where Samsung (in my experience) take their sweet time. All of this has been based on my own experiences and personal opinions.

HTC do make great phones, but Samsung's phones are overall better made for the android consumer imo. Samsung doesn't waste time with bs aspects such as 3d (which no one ever used anyway). Before the one series, they were all clunky, heavy, and had a hard time lasting 8 hours on a single charge. Don't get me wrong, i've owned both htc and samsung devices, but I just think Samsung has it together, atleast more than HTC right now.
One X
I would wait, the one x and the s3 are just gonna be warm up phones for what's coming for holiday season. You will have serious buyers remorse at that time.

Personally, I'm hoping against hope that the skyrocket HD is released next weekend as well since Spirit is getting its G-Nexus.
I like the specs on the One X, and would consider getting it, BUT what the f*ck is up with only 16 GB and no micro SD support?!?! Really??? Only 16GB!! Such a deal breaker. Hell I have almost 8gb of music & after a nandroid backup or two, there ain't nothing left.
Sure, SGS III is a no brainer, but I'm not waiting another 6 months for it to make its way to US carriers... which you know it will, even if it does get release world wide this summer.
Come on AT&T, give me a f*cking release date on the skyrocket HD already!!!

Note got run over... time for a new device, how is the HOX development, active?

So, my note got run over, and I have an upgrade available... so I think I am going to use it on a new device. I hate the lag with the S3 chip in the note, so I want to go with either the galaxy s3 or the HOX. The HOX is a bargain right now, at $99, and seems hard to resist. BUT, I hate hate hate bloatware, inlcuding sense and touchwiz. So whichever I choose, has to have an active developement community... particularly AOSP, and even better - cyanogenmod. Is this device getting attention from CM developers for CM9 and 10 or is activity slowly dying down now that the galaxy S3 is out?
First thing you should do is take a peak in the Development section and judge for yourself, seems pretty simple because it is that simple.
Development has been held back because of kernel source but that was all just released this past week and things are actually picking up quite nicely. I won't explain any further because 30 seconds in the Development section will open your eyes better than my writing can.

The S3 has a lot going for it, but it's no contest on which has the superior screen, especially with outside viewing. That to me is the biggest differentiator. Development should pick up now that the source (for 4.0.3 anyways) is out.
Sent from my HTC One X
The development community is moving forward here. I personally would choose the One X over the SGS3 every time, but that's just my opinion.
My HOX has been Nocturnal'd. Has yours?
Yeah just as others have mentioned, it took a bit before kernel source was released, but even then we had quite stable CM9/AOKP builds, and extremely nice sense ROMs. But now that source is finally out I think we can expect lots of future development, with Jelly Bean builds of CM10 and AOKP out before too long I'd imagine, and custom kernels already being released. Both are really great phones but IMO especially for $99, I'd definitely take the HOX over the SG3.
If you were going to.make the decision based only on the development progress made on a device we all have to be honest in saying the s3 is the clear choice considering we just got source. But as far which device I rather own and live with I have to say one x. But you'll there's plenty of threads comparing the device if you search the forums.

This phone has good hardware the software is fine too but right now all development is either into a stock rom with different features or some built that mostly work. I say wait before flashing anything too major I have had so many small issues that are because of things not being updated on OP or just too many pages or the developer themselves or sudo developer just releasing things they have no idea what they do. Just hold a while and give it some time to flourish. I would root and unlock the bootloader now and just sit pretty.
Really wish I had gotten a Galaxy Nexus instead of this phone tired of messing with phones to have a working good rom.
I Had s3 along with htc one x. But screen of s3 sucks when compared to htc one x especially under direct sunlight. If You compare both phones screen side by side u will understand the difference. But if ur ok with super amoled screen then go with s3 because always having extra ram is good

I did not blame any developer in my post and thanks for assuming I do not know how to read. I know how to read very well and have been modding and messing with devices since I was a child. What I am referring to is more than one post in which the supposed developer or person just relaying what they found does not know anything about what they are doing and posting things they " think work " I have no problem in testing things for a developer and letting them know and I have in fact donated to developers that work on the One X specifically.
I just have run into at least since I have had my one X where I have flashed a file to say add something for sound that messed up the video because the actual OP did not seem to understand what his flash was doing.
But I guess I will stop posting if giving advice on development and my opinion on the current situation rubs you the wrong way..

Most likely different processors.
Supposed to be tegra 3 based.
Oh, hey look, another HTC i-device. What are they gonna lock down on this one, date and time changes? Widget locations on the home screen? Contact pictures?
I love my HOX, but HTC's pussification by bowing to AT&T to lock down the device is absurd, and goes against everything their CEO promised the modding/dev community. This very well may be the last time I buy from HTC.

That's what I was thinking international... But then I remembered the T-mobile rumor.
http://m.techcrunch.com/2012/07/25/htc-one-x-rumored-to-launch-on-t-mobile-come-september/
Still were divided into Tegra and Snapdragon camps anyway. Personally I prefer the battery life on the dual core platform especially considering how close in performance it can be. At this point I'm ready for any good news for HTC as they've been taking a beating in market share from Samsung lately.
It only sucks for people who NEED to be on the bleeding edge of technology. That was me a few years back until i realized i didn't have the resources to fund my expensive habit. So i tend to stay happy with the device i have now
But it does seem like HTC isn't staying so true to their word that they were gonna slow down the amount of devices. But this year is better than last year that's for sure.
I would totally buy that, except this is my last HTC device.

I'm in the same boat. I would love to unleash my inner tech whore and plunk down money like there's no tomorrow on phones but honestly there's not a damn thing wrong with my one X. It's got great build quality, a great camera, awesome battery life and AOKP. Pretty much all I can ask for in a phone. I figure it will last me at least a year and a half which is more than I can say for pretty much every other phone I've ever owned. Only phone to last me over a year was my old nokia e71 (which I keep as a backup) and that was before I was exposed to the wonderful world of Android on my nexus one.
Same thing happens every time a new device comes out.
I don't get it. You think they should hold off bringing out a new phone until you've had enough of yours?
Is called progression...
I think ( tho could be wrong ) the op meant it sucks in terms of support.
I do understand....I bought 2 Evo 3d's paid over a grand for them 6 months later the phone is dropped for the 4G and I did well to sell one for 175 bucks, where as had I bought iphones I would have not lost so much.
So here we have the hox currently one hot phone, you bring out the "rumored" phone and now the hox turns in to ugly friend that nobody wants to date. So value drops, development drops, and support drops.
So yeah I see how it sucks.
Funny how you bring up the iPhone thing. I always think the same.. I switched to ATT the day the HOX came out. And now while I love the phone I don't want to be stuck with a phone that won't have development. With what little devs we have we are doing great, but what incentive do they have to stay when better phones are popping up? And now were stuck with this phone hardly anybody wants to buy after f____ing ATT dropped the price to a measly 100 dollars. That was a damn quick price drop.

The linked article does not mention LTE. And I think Tegra chipsets with LTE are not coming until late this year, or even 2013? Without LTE, AT&T is not going to pick up this phone.
Looks to be an upgrade for international carriers, or a flagship for T-Mobile. Either way, that wouldn't affect our development much, if at all.

Crapsung has a date. I think it was today I have no idea if it started rolling out though.
It is very odd, and rather disappointing that we haven't heard any jelly bean news. My first android product was an HTC incredible, then got the incredible 2, convinced my mom to get a flyer. Now happily have a OneX. Recently picked up a nexus 7 as my first tablet (amazing BTW) and I must say if HTC doesn't bounce back I may jump fully onto the nexus device bandwagon.
Don't get me wrong I absolutely love my OneX and have shouted HTC is the best OEM from the rooftops. But it is hard to not feel a Lil abandoned here by HTC. I love the 4.0.4 update but there is no getting around the fact that its old by the time its released.
When I first started using my nexus 7 I couldn't help but feel like something was missing. It felt lacking and a bare bones os. But the more I use it the more I have come to realize there is definetly a "less is more " theme with a nexus device. Its easy to get used to, easy to love. Long story short HTC better step to the plate or this long time customer is seriously gonna consider other options.

Please create threads only relevant to this device. This thread is really about an announcement for the Galaxy S III, not the One X. Let's keep things specifically relevant.
Side note: remember we've received several updates from HTC so far including a version update (4.0.3-4.0.4). Don't be such downers! If you all think this wait is bad, try to remember the epic waits for Froyo and such (some were a year plus).

The next step. Where do we go?

Im loving my lte.
The one and s4 are good, but I honestly dont feel they're worth the upgrade from what I have.
I'd wait a little longer to see what both companies are going to offer.
There's been rumors of a one-like phone coming to sprint with 2gigs of ram and sd slot.

Wow... This sold me.. The one sounds amazing.

If I didn't have to switch and I owned a 4g lte, I would do the same as you Jesus. However I'm switching providers back top sprint and taking 75 for my galaxy s2.
2gb memory cache! Yes its true.. Holy macro! Its almost like running a laptop in you're hand.. Pretty darn close.
Other good reviews on CNET that didn't seem very embellished. Though they do seem more sided with htc..lol.. Especially with well the seeking imagery.. For a tech head anyhow. Haha
The gs4 has way too big of a screen for me.. S2 was borderline enough.. Lol 4.7 vs 5 inch from HTC one and galaxy s4. Plus HTC makes way better builds

I bit the bullet yesterday and went to Metropcs. Upgraded from my beloved Evo Shift and got an LG Motion. I wasn't that impressed with the Spirit and it just didn't feel right in my hands.
at this point id just hold off and see whats announced at google i\o in may, might be wiser to just wait and get a new nexus phone with key lime pie*, whats a couple more months
(*rumored)
Im wondering if Google now owns Motorola, what that might mean for the Photon Q and the droids. Maybe they'll let us unlock the bootloaders and have a party.
I've been a mobile qwerty man since the awesome palm pure with webOS, but sometime around last year my flex cable went out on my shift and have learned to enjoy the virtual keyboard and swipe.

You think swift is better then android's version of the swipe 4.2 KB? Not sure myself... Tried both and I'm on Android one currently

Actually the KB in 4.2.2 is really good...the only issue I see with it (imo anyway) is that you can't longpress on the keys to put in numbers or symbols
Pretty sweet otherwise, but same...it's a pretty close call
The color and texture of it is also really nice
HTC One sounds promising now...

I've waited when the LTE and S3 came out. Now it's time for the S4 and the One. I cannot wait anymore. I need a new device. And after comparing specs, features, and reviews I've decided that I'll go for the HTC One. It's not as gimmicky as the Samsung and way better quality.

I like the One a lot. I'm still on the fence though. I also like the Nexus 4 quite a bit.

I'd go with the Nexus...reading through the posts over in the M7 forums, there seem to be a lot of physical issues with the device...may just be the first couple batches that were manufactured, but at least with a nexus device, root is as easy as using fastboot
But the One they need to get S-OFF because htcdev.com is the only option right now

Plus you have to see it like this, with HTC your going to lose a lot of features running AOSP. Its shipped with Sense for a reason :banghead:
To some that's not a big deal, but to most it will be, because we all know it will release with an outdated Android version. Not only that, its outdated due to bugs.
With a Nexus device the only way to go is up, since the only proprietary thing is MPdecision and that's released in our ota updates. Which comes just a day or so after the ota rollout. So we gain a lot, BUT don't have the option for skinned ROMs.
I look at it like this, if your going to run Sense only (and HTC has dealt with security leaks) then the One would be a great device. But if your not running Sense, get a device AOSP was built for so you don't have all the tiny bugs that will be present.
I remember back when ALL I would run on my speedy was Sense, because AOSP was buggy with MMS/camera/video etc. So I hated it, even on my DS I hated CM because it was buggy.......but my Nexus really opened my eyes.
End of rant lol

Well if you're looking at AOSP you gotta look at the dev support too, even if it wasn't built for AOSP and there is a lot of devs working on it the bugs will get hammered out... that was the problem with devices like the Shift. Now the s3 and Note 2 have a ton of devs but you also gotta deal with a ton of Noobs. I personally miss the small community here but having more devs is definitely a plus... but dang even with the s2 I feel like I'm always behind with what is going on. The bigger communities ate a little intimidating after being here for two years. And I know the Nexus 4 community is HUGE.

Yeah today is the most I've been on xda in a few days. I've shut down my strapped gmail, and everything. I'm stepping completely back and putting things in order in my life, that's another reason I couldn't chose HTC, to many bugs/updates to work out. I have no need to ever update from what I have because its flawless....I love my Nexus

I had to do that about a month ago. I've been using SuperNexus a lot which is basically what is on the N4 with some added support for extras but damn it flies. I saw an idiot spouting crap about it because he broke the back cuz it fell out of his pocket... I was like why do you think they make cases? People are dumb.

With sprint though the options are either the One, S4, G Pro. No nexus devices. And out of them it's either the One or G Pro. And I dunno much about the G Pro atm and I really want a new device. Lol
