This sucks for us. - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

How will development for our HOX be then? This phone looks to be a beast.

Most likely different processors.

Supposed to be tegra 3 based.

Oh, hey look, another HTC i-device. What are they gonna lock down on this one, date and time changes? Widget locations on the home screen? Contact pictures?
I love my HOX, but HTC's pussification by bowing to AT&T to lock down the device is absurd, and goes against everything their CEO promised the modding/dev community. This very well may be the last time I buy from HTC.

OP how does this suck for us exactly? This is how it goes. Either way, it looks like replacement for intl hox, not ours.

If this had a quad core s4 I'd be mad. However it doesn't.. so I'm not.

Are people seriously expecting upcoming phones to remain the same or.. be slower? Of course they will be faster and better than what we already have. It will have been at least 1/2 a year by the time this C2 comes out. Deal with it!

To be honest according to those specs I'd still prefer this version simply because of the battery sipping s4. I think tegra3 will shine in tablets.

That's what I was thinking international... But then I remembered the T-mobile rumor.
http://m.techcrunch.com/2012/07/25/htc-one-x-rumored-to-launch-on-t-mobile-come-september/
Still were divided into Tegra and Snapdragon camps anyway. Personally I prefer the battery life on the dual core platform especially considering how close in performance it can be. At this point I'm ready for any good news for HTC as they've been taking a beating in market share from Samsung lately.

It only sucks for people who NEED to be on the bleeding edge of technology. That was me a few years back until i realized i didn't have the resources to fund my expensive habit. So i tend to stay happy with the device i have now
But it does seem like HTC isn't staying so true to their word that they were gonna slow down the amount of devices. But this year is better than last year that's for sure.

I would totally buy that, except this is my last HTC device.

I'm in the same boat. I would love to unleash my inner tech whore and plunk down money like there's no tomorrow on phones but honestly there's not a damn thing wrong with my one X. It's got great build quality, a great camera, awesome battery life and AOKP. Pretty much all I can ask for in a phone. I figure it will last me at least a year and a half which is more than I can say for pretty much every other phone I've ever owned. Only phone to last me over a year was my old nokia e71 (which I keep as a backup) and that was before I was exposed to the wonderful world of Android on my nexus one.

Same thing happens every time a new device comes out.
I don't get it. You think they should hold off bringing out a new phone until you've had enough of yours?
Is called progression...

I think ( tho could be wrong ) the op meant it sucks in terms of support.
I do understand....I bought 2 Evo 3d's paid over a grand for them 6 months later the phone is dropped for the 4G and I did well to sell one for 175 bucks, where as had I bought iphones I would have not lost so much.
So here we have the hox currently one hot phone, you bring out the "rumored" phone and now the hox turns in to ugly friend that nobody wants to date. So value drops, development drops, and support drops.
So yeah I see how it sucks.

Funny how you bring up the iPhone thing. I always think the same.. I switched to ATT the day the HOX came out. And now while I love the phone I don't want to be stuck with a phone that won't have development. With what little devs we have we are doing great, but what incentive do they have to stay when better phones are popping up? And now were stuck with this phone hardly anybody wants to buy after f____ing ATT dropped the price to a measly 100 dollars. That was a damn quick price drop.

The linked article does not mention LTE. And I think Tegra chipsets with LTE are not coming until late this year, or even 2013? Without LTE, AT&T is not going to pick up this phone.
Looks to be an upgrade for international carriers, or a flagship for T-Mobile. Either way, that wouldn't affect our development much, if at all.

I want to get a new phone but its crazy how so may phones come out so quickly and out-dating the other...I feel like just getting the Iphone 5 and stick with that, at least there wont be a million choices like with android and get tempted to keep switching back and forth, I swear with android its like a new phone thats better comes out shortly after one phone comes out.

Note how that article says samsung is thinking of a 2ghz device sometime next year, NOT this year, then there is speculation that the device is the SGS3, and then there is someone doing even further speculation that it could come out this fall, even though we know this is impossible partly because the SGS2 variant for verizon probably won't be out until a couple months before then at best based on current news. This is just overspeculation leading to insane predictions. SGS3 in Jan or Feb next year is possible though if Tegra 3 is out by then though, as samsung will want to compete, but that's just my own speculation and have no factual data backing it as well.
Meh, I like having the highest tiered phone as much as the next guy so something new/awesome coming out right after I got the past top tier phone is a little irritating, however having new things out is always great.
I can't see me needing anything stronger than the Galaxy S 2; I would love a 4.5 inch screen but 4.3 and the specs it has is great.
The Wonders of competition I'd rather they were doing this than have technology move very slowly, Just pick a phone you like, Not slow, looks good, nice screen, decent camera and then stick with it

Agreed. You can drive yourself insane waiting for the perfect device. Pick whatever suits you best when you need a new phone and stick with it for a year or two or until you genuinely need more power.
I stuck with my mt3g as long as I could. Now I have the mt4g and love it! I don't anticipate outgrowing it any time soon.

It is pretty frustrating :S Especially for Canadians, we get locked in 3 year contracts, not 2
the grass is always greener.
Well you're not alone. It's not like software/graphics wise, it's keeping up with the hardware. I don't really see any game that's pushing the tegra devices to their limit, or even power vr sgx540.
So point being, even if hardware improves dramatically next year, last year's phones will still keep up with what today demands.

Lulzy.
I don't see a problem with SGS the Third coming out next year... one solid leap forward every year sounds perfectly legitimate to me so long as the tech and improvements are keeping pace.
Yeah. I'm a little knicked that I got a great phone (HTC HD2) released here in the US a little over a year ago, then the next thing I know it's EVO with Android, no Android for the HD2 (still the best hardware out there) and no Windows Phone 7 upgrade for the HD2 either from TMO. Now I'm trolling XDA and trying to put together the info and ability (and trying to work up the balls) to set up my HD2 on a dual boot with Android on SD and WinMo 6.5 NAND.
It gets old.

you might want to be careful, one of those two are EOL. My dad has it and it's approaching the end of life.
Honestly my next jump will be to the Nexus, who ever is carrying it. I'm not loyal to T-Mobile any longer.

I just got the Sensation. Development for it is booming. I ultimately chose it over the Amaze because it's cheaper. But here are some other factors that will play a role:
1. Ram and memory. Amaze has 1GB, 16GB, respectively. 728mhz (same as mt4g) and
1GB memory on the Sensation is good enough for me.
2. Processor. Amaze has a newer and faster dual-core processor. I didn't care for it much. The Sensation is running graphic heavy games just as smoothly as the MT4G. So this wasn't a big factor.
3. Camera. I definitely wish the Sensation had a dedicated camera button. But it's not a deal breaker and actually looks sexier without one. But still convenient, nonetheless
4. HSPA. Theoretically, Amaze has 42mbps vs. 14mbps Sensation.
All these numbers I typed may be a little off.
The Sensation has a HQ Camera mod to capture pictures uncompressed. So that and video look amazing. Idk how the Amaze is. But with that mod, the Sensation is on par, if not a bit better.
The big factors for me was an upgraded camera over the MT4G and development. The Sensation actually looks sexier, imo. All the Amaze had me for was basically the camera buttons.
Hope this helps. At first I was badly needing to get the Amaze when it first came out. But as time passed, it's still expensive and development is nowhere near the Sensation's. I'm happy with it.
Fyi, there are people on craigslist wanting to trade their Amaze for a Sensation + cash.. Kinda makes you wonder.

I guess that's where there's an advantage to being an old dood like me. I tend to be more content with my phones, the older I get. Right now, other than a larger screen, I still think the mt4g is as good as the Sensation or Amaze. Also the Amaze has been slower in development. If I had to choose though, I would like the Sensation. But for now, my mt4g is plenty. I keep it on my 18mbps WiFi connection 97% of the time & it flies...

I'm wanting to say the Amaze, but i'm going to have to ask him again. He just got it on my recommendation, and something broke on the phone. so he had to replace and the CSR told him that the phone was nearing EOL, which in this market isn't a surprise.
But i'm sick of T-Mobile not having heavy hitters when it comes to power users.

Same. My contract ends in December, and my mom is also fed up with T-Mobile and their service. May leave to Verizon or AT&T, but definitely not Sprint! Or we may stay with T-Mobile and I will get the One S ...but so far she's not letting me spend the money..
My dad hates T-Mobile as well, we will prolly jump to verizon when we get the chance. Service is better but i highly recommend that you stay with htc. They build phones that feel like they will last. I suggest the One S if you have the money. Otherwise, i like the amaze but ultimetly, both will serve you fine for the next 2 years.

Trading my HOXL for Nexus

To make this simple, I've always wanted a nexus phone. I came from having an iPhone, where everything was uniform, same hardware, and consistent updates were expected. The only time you didn't get an update the day it came out was if your phone was at it's end of life update cycle. But this is the reason I've always wanted a nexus phone. There's something about having a pure google experience that can't be mucked around by manufacturers.
However I am at a dilemma. When the Galaxy Nexus was first announced I was immediately sold. I wanted that phone. Then the sad news came that AT&T was not getting a subsidized version. I could not afford to drop $500 (At the time, yes I know it has droppped) on a phone, especially one without LTE.
But now I have my HOXL and I do love it, I just wish this amazing hardware could actually be put to good use. Probably my number one issue is the fact that there is no google wallet, which I have been dying for. What's the point of AT&T not allowing it when the reason for it (ISIS) has not even been released? And the other huge problem I have is Android Updates, who knows how quickly this phone will get updated. Most phones don't even have ICS yet, and before someone claims to just use a ROM like AOKP or CM9, I would, gladly, but because the kernel is not released, those ROMS don't work with 100% functionality like I need.
This all being said,
tl;dr
I want a Nexus phone. Probably wont trade for Galaxy Nexus because the hardware is already outdated, but maybe one of the 5 nexus' phones in November. Do you guys think someone will trade after the phone is 6 months old?

Android phones are hard to predict.
6 Months is half a product cycle of an iPhone.
The HTC One X(L) is a fantastic device. We don't even have Kernel Source yet and look at the development we've seen so far. Sit tight.
I think ISIS will be a huge fail and Google Wallet will be allowed eventually.

Probably not only because those phones will be unsubsidized, meaning that they will be dropping the money on those phones, going out of their way to buy one off-contract, rather than simply paying less for a subsidized one. I feel like whoever is going to buy those phones will actually really want them. If they wanted the One X, they would have dropped the money on that (and probably for a cheaper price)
And I agree with you that you never know when you will get an official update for Androids, however I honestly couldn't care less if our phone never gets an official update again, so long as we have the source code.... Once we have that we will ALWAYS be on the cutting edge of the Android platform...(and yes...it will be stable as well...like the previous poster said...our phone is only a month an a half old and we do not have the source yet...once we get that you will see much much much improvement.)
It does concern me that the fact that the SGSIII is now out and uniform amongst all US carriers AND they have the source....I just hope that some good devs still decide to get the One X
And HTC really ought to open their eyes to the fact that they are going to have to release the source eventually, and they are only shooting themselves in the foot by not releasing the source now, now that SGSIII is out WITH source...
People have mentioned all kinds of crazy trades, so anything is possible, I guess. But as mentioned in above responses, I wouldn't bet on a straight out one-for-one trade. Trading what is probably going to be a flagship phone, for a phone that is 5-6 months old is probably not going to be considered a fair trade by most people. You may have to sweeten the deal by throwing in something extra, or extra cash to make it a fair trade. Or sell the One X for whatever you can get for it, then buy the Nexus of your choice.
Yeah it bugs me too that Samsung has a better rep with developers than HTC does. Of course with past phones they had to. Imagine the Captivate with locked bootloader and no source (shudder)
I miss my Galaxy Nexus. I didn't think it'd take so long for us to get the kernel source code and that's holding back development. No CM9 = no care.
This is an awesome phone stock and with the mods and customizations it's a lot better, but I can't even get full contact pictures without a ton of pixelization and that's annoying. Can't undervolt or use any of the fantastic kernels that devs release, because they can't work on this damn phone. HTC are being assholes to their loyal devotees so it's pretty disappointing.
Awesome phone, but no where near the level of homebrew/hobby development because of HTC. I want to love this phone but when I see what the HTC One X guys have with their Tegra 3 chip I get so jelly

Funny, I left my GN to get the HOX because of the terrible radio. Although the software was great, I got really slow data speeds on the GN no matter what radio I flashed. My HOX gets fantastic speeds now.
Whether the radio is good or not is never one of the specs reviewers talk about but without a good radio, the phone is not much use. Do a few searches on Samsung radios and you will see that they have a poor reputation.
And as far as development is concerned, ask SG2 owners how long it took to get CM to work because of the weird blue tooth drivers Samsung used....

As soon as source drops for this phone, it's going to be huge.

I pulled the trigger. Bought the galaxy nexus. I have no plans to get rid of the one x even though it's buggy as hell so i'll probably end up getting straight talk on the nexus and use it as a toy.

Try using HD contact photos (app). Seems to work pretty well as long as you don't use the HD resolution feature in the advanced settings.
BTW that's a Google problem, not HTC problem.

Im using jelly bean on my old deactivated nexus, and Im dying to have Google now on the one x. It blows all the voice assistants we currently have out of the water.

I can only dream of this happening. Stock nexus with inferior hardware is smoother than our one x. Sense uses way too much RAM.

Yeah it bugs me too that Samsung has a better rep with developers than HTC does. Of course with past phones they had to. Imagine the Captivate with locked bootloader and no source (shudder)

Samsung is a bigger company. They have leverage against carriers. HTC is desperate.
Another reason is, samsung is the biggest electronics manufacturing company in the world. This is why the nexus is able to sell at $350. There is no other company that can provide such cost efficiency. Only samsung has the infrastructure.

I don't think we're gonna see anymore developers then what we currently have. They're gonna flock to the sgs3 and the nexus phones. Also, with another better One X supposedly rumored, why would they get this phone? We haven't reached the most roms well get but we've most likely seen which developers will work on them. This phone was doomed one the sgs3 and jelly bean came out. Source or no source.

[Q] Upgrade this month? What to do

I have an upgrade this month on AT&T. Its actually on my granpas phone number because we added him to ours and I could use that upgrade.
What should I do? I almost thought about getting the s3 just to try out and see what its like, but I just hate the look of it and haven't had good service with samsung before.
Also thought about getting iphone 5. I know a good bit about iPhones like jailbreaking and all that good stuff. But I am really an android guy. I could get it for my girlfriend which currently has iphone 4 and sell her iphone 4 possibly.
I would be the one jailbreaking it and all the fun stuff with it lol.
Or should I just wait? Is anything good coming out soon?

HTC One X+ is coming out (One X with a quad core, 2100mAh battery, 64GB storage). That would be a good choice.
Galaxy Note 2 is supposedly coming to AT&T if you like big displays. (Quad core, 2GB of Ram, sd slot)
And then there is a lot of Nexus rumors flying about.
Personally, I would wait and get one of those.
Have you seen the iPhone 5 in person? Its pretty underwhelming. Disappointing, really. It looks almost exactly like the iPhone 4. Just the screen is 1/2 inch longer in portrait orientation, which makes it 16:9 in landscape (for watching HD television programs). It also gives it a goofy long "candy bar" shape compared to most every other smartphone out there. Slightly faster CPU, a bit thinner, and aluminum back (instead of glass). But otherwise its the same old same old. It really brings nothing new to the series. Also, the screen is still so small, it seems like a joke now that I'm accustomed to the One X.
GS3 is not a bad phone, and great dev activity. I might consider it. But we're already a few month along into that phone's cycle. So I wouldn't be surprised if an incremental update is not released on AT&T. Or the Note 2 may be an option for you.
I might consider the One X+, given its an incremental improvement on an already stellar phone. And its coming out on AT&T with 64 GB of storage. But given the bootloader unlock ituation on 2.20, I might wait and see how locked down any future HTC device on AT&T is before a purchase. Or wait for a dev community root/unlock solution before buying.
I haven't seen Iphone 5 in person. I have heard rumors bout the one x. Didn't know it would be worth the upgrade. It would have a lot of the same roms as this wouldn't it? Any info on a date on it?

The One X+ would be worth the upgrade (not the One X which has been out for 4 months now). It should be shipping this month.
And no it will have different ROMs and you will not be able to use the ROMs for the current AT&T version. Different chipset. You will brick your phone.

Man that sucks. The white version is my favorite. Looks better than grey to me.
Looked up some pics of the phone and not a big fan of that red ring on the back camera. Everything else can be covered with a case. But that is just tacky to me lol.
Windows phones are useless. Apple devices make no sense whatsoever. Android is so much easier.
Ever since growing up with Macintosh computers in 80s and 90s and the desire to napalm the original iMac my mother purchased. I find Apple appalling in every way fathomable.
I would atleast wait to see how the Jellybean rom is for the hoxl.

Red is pretty signature for Verizon Droid phones. I'm guessing it will be removed on the AT&T version.
I would wait. There are a lot of phones rumored to come. Like the Samsung s3 but with a smaller screen, HTC one x+, lumia 920(with amazing camera), a new nexus, and the note 2, as well as LG G phone with the new built in LCD screen. A lot of choices.

[Q] Is it worth it? [SOLVED]

Okay guys,
I'm a hobbyist developer, I often pseudo-kang my own roms by basically cherry picking features from various roms and slap them all together into one big frankenrom for whatever device I'm using.
I've decided that next phone I get, I'm just going to develop a real rom myself. The problem is, I can't decide what my next phone will be! I have two options, and only two as I have VERY limited funds and will be renewing my contract:
AT&T HTC One X
LG Optimus G
Both are less than a dollar. The one X has lesser specs, but I'm familiar with HTC devices and their quirks (been cooking up roms since my old wizard and Kaiser days) but the optimus g is from a manufacturer I'm totally unfamiliar with when it comes to developing yet has some amazing specs for a whopping PENNY at Wal-Mart.
How active do you guys (honestly) see the developing community surrounding the One X lasting? Is it worth it to jump into a device that is already end of life? Should I just hang on until I have an extra $99 and get the HTC One?
I'm coming here and asking you guys this because you're the ones that can tell me how much longer you HONESTLY see yourselves using this device. I'm using the htc holiday now, and that really bit me in the arse, dying out in less than a year, AND being a nightmare to develop for. If it happens again with the One X, I'm swearing of HTC forever.

Me, personally, I'd wait and pay the $99 for the M7. I'm not saying this is a bad phone by any stretch of the imagination, it's a freakin awesome phone, I absolutely love my Evita.
But, considering the speed at which tech becomes outdated, and how long you want to keep a device for, it just seems to make more sense to hold out for the M7.

I agree. The latest tech for quad core phones is extremely promising, like the one and the gs4. Seems like their getting great battery/performance ratio. I'd wait it out a bit.

Thanks a lot guys. That really helped me make my decision, along with seeing the crazy TWENTY HOURS of talk time a friend managed on a stock HTC One. My Holiday gets MAYBE 5 hours of screen on time, and that's with LTE turned off, intellidemand governor, and max clock set to 1024MHz. That was another big bite on the arse with getting one of the first LTE phones on AT&T

Oooh. Those sneaky bastards. It's only $50 if you're starting *new* service. Upgrades are $99.
Aw shucks, what a letdown.
What would you lose if you were to start a new contract? I know up here in Canada, it's government law to have carriers able to port your number from one service to another, even if it's to the same carrier after a cancellation of their service. Other than the phone number, I don't know what else you'd lose besides loyalty. Would it be worth it to look into?
Starting fresh is just an idea to explore, it might help, probably not.
Edit: The reason I say start new (if at all possible) is because I believe the HTC Holiday is >2 years old, rendering your contract nearly terminated and up for renewal. Just to clarify.
