756MB was never available to the OS, roughly 200mb is reserved for system only (hardware like CPU and GPU) so only 500ish is available for the OS. This was the same in GingerBread but in ICS HTC just decided to let the OS show the "true" value available to the OS and not the "full" RAM available

Not necessarily. When the system needs memory, guess which one will be faster/smoother. 1) The system has free ram available, or 2) The system has to close background applications/services to release memory.
PCs with several gb memory can satisfy the need of most regular applications/services at the same time. Smarth phones don't have the luxury yet.
But with that said, I do feel this thread much like a joke.
I am using Cm7 for defy And i have 307 of free RAM so wait for final release.

i like using NScollab 1.0.xx it has the power of CM7 but toned down to look stock. usually updated every week or so. i have games and media mostly on my NS and it runs smooth even without over clock.

I would say stock coz it doesn't take up any memory like that of the custom roms. Just flash netarchy kernel to make it overclockable.

im currently running MIUI 1.4.22 and have 150 MB USED and 156 MB FREE, Total 306 MB , where the hell 206 MB if it has 512 MB , it is understandable if its total 450 MB - 480 Mb due to system read differently, but its only 306MB.
is there something wrong with my Nexus S i9020 ??
nope. some of the memory is being used by the android system and the android system only. meaning that it is locked and cant be used by any other application thats why it only shows a total of 306
Yeah I think so. If open apps will use some of those missing RAM o think.

stock and netarchy kernel for me as well works great for those 3d games. put the CPU to ondemand at 1.2ghz and it will run amazing (stock 1.0ghz alone was amazing)
**keep in mind that the most graphic intense game i play is need for speed shift

i can see that on my mem info of CM7 ROM only 345MB.
384 MB real , 345MB system read.
I can feel in true HD games, i used to use DeLL streak and playing Eternal Legacy HD, it cannot run while background apps running untill i kill all task and give me free RAM around 312MB . THe the game start perfectly.
On my Nexus S the game cannot run, just kick back to home screen, its like insufficient RAM ( it was not force closing ).
So i assume nexus S only has totally 512MB - 128MB = 384MB. CMIIW

that the game closes back to home screen has nothing to do with the hardware.
it only shows that the game,does not support 2.3.3 or/and the nexus S hummingbird CPU.
it kinda bug's me seeing how many stupid people are out there.that go like.
"hey the game doesn't work on me ****(any 2.3( updated from 2.2) phone,in this case nexus S,allot of users said this)it worked fine on my ****(any froyo 2.2 phone or snapdragon cpu)

Everything I have seen on the internet (including HTC's own specs page) shows the EVO SHift having 512 MB of RAM. However, it seems as if my system only has 368 MB (as detected by V6 Supercharger and a couple hardware info apps I downloaded from the market). Does anybody know why this would be the case? My phone is newer (just got it a little over a month ago). Could HTC have lessened the amount of RAM in the new Shifts?
Also, I am running MikShifted-G v1.6 if that makes any difference.
Mine says I have 367,haha, i believe it might only show total available after all the system android stuff... I am probally wrong because I have AOSP which is so much smaller and less bloated that your sense and i have less.. Haha.. But idk... Just speculation

Thanks for the link, but I'm just talking about total RAM, not amount free. Everything indicates I have 368 MB of RAM (not internal storage or ROM or anything, but actual RAM). The Evo Shift supposedly has 512 MB, but I know the HTC Merge has 368 MB, so I was wondering if they lowered the RAM on the newer Shifts.
To check the RAM, download the app Android System Info. It is not Internal Memory, but RAM. Mine says Max 368 MB.

They're talking about internal memory on the phone. Are you talking about an sdcard?
Its possible the gpu has an amount dedicated to it that will not be shown. Sort of like checking the ram on a laptop will show less than the stated specs
My sense only has 563 Ram ) and i saw another phones have more than that, is it normal ? And my free ram almost stay between 90-120 mbs Somebody know how to remove increase Ram
Some roms or kernel have uses some ram to improve other speeds. This is why the ram can differ a little.

I have htc sensation XE beats audio z715e(no root) custom ROM with official update android 4.0.3 sense 3.6 soft num 3.33.707.151 over 2 or 3 years untill now i don't care about phone or memory or Mhz of processor but in last time i have problems my tel start work slowly or doing some things slow.In the internet and manual of htc write that he has 768 mb of memory but in all programms (clean masters memory cleaners or some checkers) i see max 582 570 600 mb where about 200 mb ram about processor is wrealy 1.5Ghz dual core i see that in phone or some checkers.In the settings - about phone hardware information i see 1.5Ghz dualcore 768 mb memory but where or i dont understand something.

Hi,
the Sensation (XE) really has 768 MB of RAM but the system also needs a little bit of the RAM to work properly. So there are only about 500-600 MB left for you or your apps.
As far as I know the amount of RAM available for you, depends on the custom ROM you're using, so there's nothing more you can do about that.

The ram is used in a great part by kernel for managing better, depending the kernel, depends your ram capacity.
