Everything I have seen on the internet (including HTC's own specs page) shows the EVO SHift having 512 MB of RAM. However, it seems as if my system only has 368 MB (as detected by V6 Supercharger and a couple hardware info apps I downloaded from the market). Does anybody know why this would be the case? My phone is newer (just got it a little over a month ago). Could HTC have lessened the amount of RAM in the new Shifts?
Also, I am running MikShifted-G v1.6 if that makes any difference.
Mine says I have 367,haha, i believe it might only show total available after all the system android stuff... I am probally wrong because I have AOSP which is so much smaller and less bloated that your sense and i have less.. Haha.. But idk... Just speculation

mine shows,
internal 452/321 free
rom 410/91.9 free
This might help explain things better

Thanks for the link, but I'm just talking about total RAM, not amount free. Everything indicates I have 368 MB of RAM (not internal storage or ROM or anything, but actual RAM). The Evo Shift supposedly has 512 MB, but I know the HTC Merge has 368 MB, so I was wondering if they lowered the RAM on the newer Shifts.
To check the RAM, download the app Android System Info. It is not Internal Memory, but RAM. Mine says Max 368 MB.
My mistake

Has anyone added more ram? Ive seen 1 gig sticks for$38. I might have to try if noone else has. Curious if it might speed the shift up.?

They're talking about internal memory on the phone. Are you talking about an sdcard?
Its possible the gpu has an amount dedicated to it that will not be shown. Sort of like checking the ram on a laptop will show less than the stated specs

How come my transformer onlyy show less than 400m memory available in the task killer?. I removed all the Widgets and haven't install any extra apps besides angry bird games. The available memory still showing less than 500M. Hows your transformer available memory show?
With 512 MB RAM you get 100-250 MB of free RAM, so >400MB is more than enough for everything !
And you have 1GB for USE not for FREE/USELESS ...

It is.. but the graphics and the OS take up a chunk of it don't forget.
I've seen this question pop up on ever forum for every 1GB device I've looked at so far. There's 1GB of RAM minus what the GPU uses minus what the OS uses. Should be an automatic sticky.
The EVO 3D is basically the same phone as the Sensation with the addition of 3 extra Gb of RAM. The spec sheet for the Sensation on HTCs site lists 4Gb of RAM with a note that only 1Gb is user accessible.
Internal Memory
768 MB RAM, 4 GB Internal Storage (1 GB user addressable)

I remember when T-Mobile's version of the HD2 came out and it had 768 Mb of RAM vs the 512 in the European HD2s and there was a way to unlock the remainder of the RAM with a hack for the Euro models.
I'm sure given HTCs track record that they've used the same hardware (makes sense) to cut down on costs so it's just a matter of a hack from the community to unlock the remaining 3Gb of RAM.
What say ye?

I guess you mean ROM and not RAM...and I've read that it is not possible...
Sure just buy a couple of DDR3 sticks and jam 'em in the microSD slot.

No, said RAM, meant RAM....
You can do the research, I was going by memory but it actually had 1Gb of RAM vs the 448 in standard HD2s. The Euro HD2s had an unlock that at least gave them 576 Mb, I'm guessing the same will be true here.

As you said in your first post, the Sensation is listed with 768 MB RAM, 4 GB Internal Storage (1 GB user addressable). Some of the 768 is then used for Android and Sense, with the remainder being open to run other applications. The 4 GB with 1 GB user addressable is NOT RAM. RAM is volatile (non-permanent) memory that is VERY fast and used to store the data for a currently running process. The user addressable space is non-volatile and is used for permanent storage of applications, contacts, photos, etc. It is not possible to use this as RAM as it is flash memory instead of using capacitors like the RAM found in cell phones (which provides the speed needed).
Some of the remaining 3 GB might be open in the future after the bootloader is unlocked and custom ROMs are flashed as they would be less memory intrusive than Sense. This might also free up some extra RAM from system use, but there is no possible way to increase it beyond 768 - whatever vanilla android requires to run.
I didn't notice this in my first 16GB Tab, but on the 32GB tab, if I open the Task Manager through the minibar, it shows 775 MB total ram I know we are supposed to have 1GB ram, so I figure the 225MB missing is due to god knows what, that's not an issue.
If you go to Settings, Applications, Running Applications, it shows you have only 512 MB ram......the real question is, which one is it?
I also noticed that in the 16gb, but ignored it since the usage of ram in the ram manager exceeds 512mb. What's bothering me is why do the usage of ram differ between the ram manager and the one in running applications.
This was the first thing I noticed when I turned on my 7.0 plus for the first time when I got it on Christmas day. I just disregarded it but I am happy I am not the only one who is curious as to why it is saying 775 MB of ram.
If you take a look at /proc/meminfo you can see the kernel only recognizes 775 MB of memory. Guess that explains why it felt like apps were closing more frequently than on my 1 GB phone.
Question is, why are we getting less than memory than was advertised?
On mine:
Code:
# cat /proc/meminfo
MemTotal: 794900 kB
We are getting all the memory "adverstised", but you have to remember that things like the kernel itself and certain other things take memory before hand. The same thing happens on android phones.
Well wouldn't that still show it as being "used" so to speak out of the total 1GB or 1024 MB? Or does the kernal just allocate itself and then let everything else take over from there?

I honestly don't remember. I wouldn't be concerned, however, about the lower number. It's perfectly normal on the few android devices I have.

could it be that some of the ram preserved for the GPU?

Ah... Never thought of that, but at the same time (IMHO) I think it's unlikely it would use THAT much.
Though I guess if other android devices do it according to garyd it's nothing we should worry about.

I believe it's RAM reserved for GPU and a few other things, like the Samsung MFC and camera interface.
On Captivate, some of the "speedmod" kernels changed the reserved memory sizes to free up user RAM - but often reducing the reserved memory can break stuff. (For example, trying to port those changes to Infuse caused the camera to stop working, along with video decoding acceleration.)

Keep in mind this is the Linux kernel plus android.
In this case the system shows how much memory is available after the Linux kernel and android overlay are loaded. the galaxy 7 plus has 1GB of ram.
Now if this was straight Linux without android you would see the full amount of ram listed.
I recently bought a One S and one thing that has really been bugging me is the fact that I have much les storage than advertised. It says that you get 16 GB, but the actual amount is 12.14, and
2.21 of that is internal memory so I only actually have 9.93 to store my media. Why is this? Also it says it should have 1 GB of RAM but task manager says I only have 650 MB.

16 GB storage is partitioned and some RAM is reserved for the system and the GPU.

First off no hdd or flash memory is ever 100% as advertise because its been formatted to run. That's why there is only 12gb instead of 16gb. And that 2gb is the space dedicated to app installs. And the remainder is for you to do with however you please. Music, videos, extra game data (like many of gameloft games where you need to dl an extra 500 MB or so) or whatever you else you want to throw on other then an app install.
When you see an app in market and you download it and install it, it goes directly to that 2gb partition. If you download an app from a third party website it first goes to the 9gb space and once it installs it, it installs on the 2gb and all you need to do is delete the original dl .apk or keep it as a back up.

The above answers covered the answer so no need to reiterate but I just want to opine that you should consider yourself lucky, HTC doesn't rape you like Motorola does. On the Razr and Bionic, they are advertised as 16gb internal but only 8 is accessible to the user. They allot 4gb for apps and 4 for the OS. Bonus for them is obviously expandable memory.

System takes the resources
On many phones the preinstalled software takes a lot of space. I would recommend to install another ROM. I always do that to get rid of the software I don't need.
Ok. Thanks for the help. But what about the RAM? Shouldnt all of it be available?

As already said, some of the RAM is reserved for the system and GPU. For example my HD2 should have 576MB RAM but it only has 411/403 (depends on the ROM/Kernel I guess) because 128MB is for the GPU and the rest is used by the system. I never actually get that much free RAM (I never get more than 200MB free, and that's only on startup; normally I have around 130MB free) but at the same time it's never really been an issue.
Ok. I just though that everything was shown together because I always have 500 MB of RAM used even with all applications closed.
The phone will still reserve some RAM for itself, and that is not the best indicator of RAM that's actually in use.
HTC One S is a gorgeous piece of hardware. To bad they didn't add sd card support...

System software installed on separate partition usually. So removing them will not add more space to the user data.

On GSMarena (and everywhere on internet) I saw that Xperia Miro has 512 MB of RAM, but every app (like Watchdog, Go Launcher) that I used shows 401 MB of RAM. I have STOCK Android, no root. Is 111MB of RAM used by OS or it's something else?

The memory figure for anything (RAM, HDD, SSD and what not), is only an approximation. During production of these memory devices, the actual value is almost always less than the figure given by the OEM. Having said that, the OS may have certain uses of the RAM but are not displayed on the task manager.
The carrier may limit the ram, I know the HTC dream was limited to 384mb by tmobile

Approximation of by 10% is very lousy approximation. On PC if you have 3GB of RAM you have ~3GB of RAM, not 2.7GB of RAM but memory figure for HDD and SSD are shown in TB but they are really in TiB (TB=1024 GB and TiB=1000 GB, ...). Does on your phone, your RAM memory figure is smaller in task manager because of OS?
