Root stock ICS rom without factory reset? - HTC Sensation

Is it possible to root the stock ICS rom (1.27 hboot) without wiping all of the phone's data? I was going to root my wife's sensation and install a custom rom, but she's been using it for almost a year on the stock un-rooted rom and she'd like to backup all of her apps as well as their data with titanium backup before hand so they can be restored on the new rom. All of the rooting methods I've seen all require a factory reset or wipe so I was just wondering if there was a method to achieve this that I have overlooked. Sure am glad I unlocked and rooted mine way back before the ICS update, heh.

I back up with titanium backup pro, you can do a batch restore of the apps and data with that. Also you can save files to computer and restore from there. What exactly is she not wanting to lose.? If it's files just put them on the computer and then restore from there, if it's applications titanium backup will take care of that. Hope this helps

I know all of that, that's what I want to do. The problem is that Titanium backup requires root. How can I backup her apps and data if I have to wipe the phone to get root in the first place? I just need a way to at least temporarily gain root so that I can run titanium and create the backups. Then I can unlock, s-off, flash a custom rom, install titanium and restore the backups. All of the methods of rooting that I've been able to find require a factory reset/wipe so all of the data and apps would be gone, making it pointless to run a backup.

Oh I understand now, try my backup from market it does not require root. Sorry I misunderstood. Hope this solves your problems.my back up will do the job. Simply search in market for My backup.

Without root, my backup will only backup apps, no data.

Install titanium backup, its free. But when you go to restore what you backed up make sure you only restore the apps and nothing else.

yeah. Back up apps us system data but when restoring just restore the apps. If you restore system data it may cause problems with new rom.

Thank you!
I recommend also using the following two apps:
Call Logs Backup and Restore
SMS Backup and Restore
Both are by the same person - Ritesh Sahu I think?
I assume you have your contacts synced to your Google account - if not you probably should back up contacts somehow. Not sure - I've always just been synced to Google.

I think they are synced, I know the contacts are on the sd card too. I am such a n00b at this, I have never had a smartphone. So its all new to me. Ive had this one for just over a week, so I dont even know what my phone can do. I am pretty impressed so far.....its like having a small laptop in my hand.

It's all good man, I've been in your boat before.
I'd also make a nandroid backup (in recovery). It's not hard to install anything, but if you ever want to go back, it makes things easier.

Quick question on restoring a back up

Does back up recover everything. Like a clock work recovery. New phone with old SIM and old memory card. What will restore? Will give me back all my apps or is that on the USB of old phone? Can I even use clock work with new phone? Or must it be unlocked?

When I have done a nandroid restore I usually get all the apps that were there when I backed it up. It also saves the user settings for the apps and anything the way you customized it (like wallpaper, widgets, launcher, etc.). It doesn't affect internal or external sd card.
You need to have CWM in the first place to restore the backup though. And I don't know about using a backup from another phone...especially if its not the same model.
In order to restore you must first root, have CWM, and make a nandroid backup. You can't restore anything until you have a backup to restore from.
U CANNOT restore a nandroif backul from a completely different phone to a new one, unless they are the same model (eg skyrocket to skyrocket)
If its same phone but not rooted can i

Exactly the same yes. Just flash cwm first in odin.

Cloning from old S4g to a new S4g?

This is probably as simple as S-off on new phone and restoring old phone's NANDROID backup to new device, but I wanted to make sure I am not missing anything.
So I decided that instead of having to **** with the cover contacts on my existing phone, I would pay t-mobile the $5 to trade in my current 4g for a new 4g in hopes that it won't have the unresponsive touch screen problem due to aftermarket battery.
I want to have the exact same configuration on the new phone as the old phone did and wondering what would be the recommended approach of accomplishing this? I have a custom Kernel, custom rom, and titanium backup pro currently, with 4 ext recovery. What do the pros suggest to make sure it is a flawless transition between phones?
TIA for your suggestions, because even though I have successfully rooted many phones, I have never tried to "clone" a phone before.
S-off
Root
Install custom recovery ( 4ext)
Format all partitions except sdcard
Superwipe (just in case)
Restore nandroid
Enjoy

[Q] Will I lose data if i don't install custom rom and only root.

Will I lose data if i don't install custom rom and only root.I will unlock the bootloader and install custom recovery and superuser. Will I lose app apps and their data.
No but it is recomended to do factory reset, if you don't it's not bug deal, on the ather hand you can back up your apps with titanium backup(after rooting) and then do factory reset, after that you safely can restore them.
HTC says you will lose everything after unlocking bootloader process. But it haven't deleted anything for me . Everything worked fine after just rooting. By the way, you should backup apps, just in case.

Same happened for me... I had all the data aftr rooting and flashing recovery.

I don't know why someone above suggested doing a factory reset, that is completely unnecessary after rooting, and I think would actually cause boot loops.
No data was lost when I rooted, although HTC do say it will be. I haven't heard of anyone who actually did have data lost though.
Yes making reset from menu will cause bootloop, after rooting resets should be made from recovery, idea of making reset is to start fresh, mostly people rooted the phone so they can move app's to sd, if you use some kind of script, already installed apps will give fc, that's why is recomended. Again it's not nesecery it's just recomended, and you always can use titanium after that.

Same for me also. I think for advance precautions they warning like that. But simple boot unlock and rooting will never modify any user data.

Yes, He is correct because menu will cause bootloop so u cant go in recovery mode..
No
No. You wont lose any data. You just gain super user permission by rooting

Restoring Apps on 3.18

Alright so before you call me stupid hear my story. After cracking screen and recieving a refurbished 3.18 One XL I need to restore some apps from a nandroid backup or TitaniumBackup from old phone to new. I adb into old phone and took as much as I could (entire sdcard) and it's on my pc.
So my question is, how to restore a nandroid or Titanium backup on a s-on stock 3.18 One XL?
-Sugardaddy
I think titanium needs root. So when you get root you should be all set.
Do you need the app only or app+data? If app only, just unzip the Ti Backup backups and install. You are good to go.
If you need the data, too, it depends on how badly you want it. If it's bad enough, you will have to pay to get the phone JTAGed and rooted so you can use Ti Backup to restore it. If you can live without it for a while (forever?) you can wait with me for a root exploit to be found.

Isn't there a non-root version of Titanium? Maybe the paid version?
EDIT: Nope, don't know why I was thinking that sorry.
