[Q] Official update while rooted?

Okay I am staring this thread because there are mixed answers in the official update thread and this might give one spot for noobs like me that are not flash addicts a place to find the quick answer.
Here is my setup:I am rooted, running a bone stock JH7 rom, ROM Manager installed, Circle Battery Mod installed, other than that no custom kernels, modems, radios, etc. I do have a couple programs that require root access like ROM Manager, AdFree, and ClockSync. Already installed kies mini and have it all set up per the instructions on samsung's website. Just waiting for the update to go live.
Here are my questions:
1) Do I need to unroot?
2) Do I or should I uninstall any apps that require root access or change the recovery image (ROM Manager/Clockwork Recovery)
3) Should I remove both my external SD and my SIM prior to flashing?
4) What data will I lose and how do I back it up? (I have read that SD cards are left alone just system data like call logs, sms, contacts, email setup, saved passwords are lost) I have Lookout installed so I know my contacts are backed up.
5) Could someone way smarter than me please do a quick write up that is more detailed on the steps needed to complete this update AND keep all your data? I don't mind reinstalling apps (just hope I don't lose all of my angry birds progress )
All of these questions are not address in any of the "official" information other than "you should back up any data you don't want to lose" but gives no steps on how to do it.

Same question here, I'm rooted with TiBU and voodoo lagfix and that's it., well besides deleting all bloatware. Still on eclair jh7. Wish I had done lagfix months ago, but I don't have a computer.

If you have a modded phone the smart thing would be to wait at least a few days before installing the update in case the rollout doesn't go as planned. These are the kind of things AT$T has probably been dreading as far as Froyo is concerned because I'm sure that come tomorrow their customer service lines are gonna be blazing like a CA wildfire due to issues with not completely stock phones and thousands of different configurations causing update glitches. I wouldn't be in such a hurry to update until I see how it goes for the "gotta have it now" sheep taking the first plunge.

Remember OCLF is bad, Mmmkay? Better lagfixes such as Voodoo and ULF

All lag fix should be removed. Otherwise, you will very likely end up with a bricked phone.
You can install Kies Mini now and connect your phone. If your phone is recognized without problem, you're good to go. Kies Mini is your only way to update the firmware.

I can't answer most of your questions, but I will recommend getting Titanium Backup. You can at least backup your app data since you're so concerned about your Angry Birds score. I think you can probably restore that after flash.

I lost my angry bird scores when my phone did a soft brick lol. I'm just saying. I had it backed up with tbu. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted

Did you copy the TiBU folder to your PC after doing a batch backup of your apps? That's the only way to reliably save a backup.

Not to be a negative Nancy, I understand some want to stay as close as possible to stock, but I'd just wait for a custom ROM to be built that de-bloats, adds speed, better GPS, etc... Cog 4 has a really stock look, and works really well; check it out. And with time there will only be others that will improve on the great ROM's we already have!

The other smart thing to do would be locate the TiBu backup folder on the external SD card. That way even a brick requiring reformatting the internal sdcard partition can be fully recovered from. Just take out the external card while restoring to stock, then root, get TiBu, point it to the reinserted external sd card, and boom, back in business.

hmm do you think it is better to do the factory data reset before I update to froyo?coz I installed the oclf ( too late >.< )and I dnt know how to disable it, I'm in stock, never tried to flash rom, but rooted, my internal memord is now is 98mb, sorry I'm noob

You should use OCLF app to remove the lag fix. Don't do factory reset or flash another ROM. You may brick your phone that way. That's why I don't use any lagfix.

Yes You should be a bone stock when updating. No lagfixes, custom kernel, nothing.

Questions about Odin,Roms,and CWM.

I was just thinking everyone is bummed about not having a full working cwm to do a full restore. But when u screw up its Odin to the call. right? I just don't see why we need full CWM when we can use Odin if we mess up. As far as getting things back to normal (setting,icons,wallpapers,etc.) U can use advanced restore to put everything back the way it was before the flash but still keep the effects of new kernels and roms. So i ask this why all the fuss? Also maybe someone could elaborate on the mount issue. Is it only when you try to do a full restore Or flash certain Roms? Oh yea and this is a noob asking.

It's mostly a question of convenience. If we get a fully functioning cwm it can be directly booted in to replacing the stock recovery. More importantly it can be incorporated into Rom Manager which makes lots of things easier and more standardized. Things like flashing roms and kernels or restoring backups and making fixes would be much easier and all right there in rom manager/cwm.
As far as Odin/heimdal goes yes that works for installing roms, restoring from soft bricks, etc. but is no substitute for a nandroid backup/restore which is great for reverting to a former configurations fully and easily after trying out new roms, kernels, etc.
There are other reasons it would be great to have a finished cwm but what we have now is not that bad since it can do most of the important things we need.
I am still interested in what I hear that people are restoring full nandroid backups successfully. The official word is that its not unmounting properly during format function in a restore, at least that's what I understand. If full restore is actually working as some are claiming then I'm not sure what is actually left undone.

So basically it would take the need for a PC out. Plus make restoring full backup possible (also tried full restore and got mounting error). Thanks for the info. So is it do to lack of devolopment and devs that r device is not so popular or the mounting issue. Thanks again.

Just curious..... Have u tried the full restore yet on CWM? If so what where your results??? I have to admit i finally have my 4g running and set up just how i want it and im a little nervous to try it out(i have done a couple advanced restores) for fear me and my old friend odin might end up getting back together a little sooner than i had planned!

Well wait maybe I'm confused..advanced restores are not nandroid restore?...

Advanced restore lets you restore just not full restore. It gives you the option to restore system,data,ect one at a time. However I have not tried to restore system just data. Like I said before couldn't full restore due to mounting issue. Also I think nandroid backup is just another term for a full backup of basicly the exact state of the phone at the time back up is done. If I'm wrong please feel free to correct me.

Ah so it sounds like there is still a mounting related error after all. And yes you got it about right. A full nandroid restore basically brings your phone back to 100% exactly the state it was in when you backed it up.

Totally clear on that considering I've been in this since the g1 with RAs recovery..that guy was so hardcore with yhe recovery....so what does the state of the phone look like after you do a restore?

Let's clear up the confusion...
As I posted on the Wiki, I have successfully done a Nandroid backup and a Nandroid restore... In both cases the "system" was identified as being backed up (or restored).
I have repeated this several times, the most recent being this morning. But, in an effort to not dispute krylon360, I've posted a targeted question to him in his thread announcing CWM3.0.2.8Beta.
I am hopeful of his response!

I was just wondering cause it works for me all the time and I thought it was working for everybody.

It is....they say it works with bali kernal, you can't use the stock kernal..I've tested and confirmed

restore definitely works on cwm.... u all r kinda being wild... there are already threads on this... look at the development thread for clockworkmod... comparing odin to cwm psshhh

Nothing wrong with odin. Nothing wrong with cwm. I have been backing up and restoring with cwm for a while now. Still don't know if it's a true "nandroid" backup but it restores everything but my lock screen wallpaper. Everytime without fail. So good that I have not had to use odin or titanium. I'm even sure I could odin at this point and get all of it back through cwm. Follow the steps for setting it up you should be fine. I'm running whites KD1 and have been since it came out.(**** I might have to Odin now just to check it out) How do you use Odin again?

your question is ambiguous please elaborate.

i want to try a rom by starskyrob fox star 1.4.0.
dont know what tb backs up and did a batch backup and now everthing in backup/restore is gone. i used cwm to backup curent rom. think that is called a nandroid backup. after all the reading i still dont all the way get the installing new rom procedure.
will my contacts be there. and photos. should i partition my sd card. where why is my usb staorage full. etc etc. i love the fact i can do these things with my phone. i just dont want to jump the gun, i am not the type person who likes to do anything unless i tried my best to fig out what i am doing first.
i dont even know if i am using xda the right way. if not i am sorry

Tb is a program that backs up ur applications and the data attached to each app. a nandroid backup ur current configuration so it saves everything from data, apps, contacts. so best bet is nand. But if ur going into another rom then tb backup that way u can restore once ur in the other rom. Btw foxstar rom isnt working i would suggest my rom *DarkKnight build 2* or reviewers rom which is based on my build 1 called *Noble series*

Right now the only working ROMs are Dark Knight and Noble.
Titanium Backup is a great tool, and will allow you to backup everything including your apps and contacts. Your pictures should be/can be saved on your external SD card, double check that.
Backing up system apps can cause issues when moving to a custom ROM, but I always backup user apps. Yes the new ROM will remove the Titanium Backup application, but the backup for us saved externally. Simply re download TB and restore, viola!

i only heard about rooting a phone days ago and i found directions on rooting my phone.thanks to the pros out there. then i google my phone is rooted now what.

i want to try a rom for my samsung galaxy s blaze, i just dont understand the backup and rstore using tb free. and i dont unerstand completly the new rom install process. using rom manager. or from downloading one on pc. what should i wipe and not wipe. what are the do's and donts. i understand directions , alot of people had trouble getting s blaze to root but i did not cause i can follow directions. i have no more direction.

i need one walk through on my first backup and rom install. i will gadly use your rom.

where can i download your rom from with istruction ,,, people say every rom has its own install instruction. and its for galaxy s blaze right. and also what is the design of your rom. performance, batt life, etc

i downloaded and installed the first one. i followed direction though and it worked. kinda knew it was not right one so i did my backup i made and all is well. went through my first cycle. thank you all for the support and help. looking forward to flashing the right one soon.

Its a process, however once you do it enough you can flash in your sleep. You'll get there, no worries.

[Q] TWRP Folders

I just got a warrantied out replacement phone and want to restore a previously saved nandroid backup. I noticed TWRP on the new phone doesn't default to the previous backup folder and backs up to a new folder. Can I re-store a nandroid from a different phone to my new one? Or is this going to cause problems?

To play it safe, you may be better off installing everything from scratch. jiggity janx said this on the SGS3 "I thought I read somewhere recently that because backups capture phone specific data on Samsung models that you are unable to move a backup from one phone to another without overwriting some valuable individual phone information". Besides, the location of the folder would make a difference also.

Thanks everyone. I did restore the nandroid without any issues. I would have started from scratch but I had a Corp email account which is secured and I didn't want to try and reset it up as I would have had to give a reason I was doing it and didn't want to admit I bricked the phone.

I need help sorting out the order of things.

Hello everybody. I need some clearance. My final goal in the Scheme of things is to Back up all my data, install the newest version of Cyanogen Mod, Restore Cyanogen so that i get all my apps and data back, and then eventually restore everything to stock so I can trade in he phone, and then repeat the process with a new phone. Can anybody tell me some of the first things I should do, to nudge me in the right direction?

Also, read more. Some of the things you want to do can't be done in the order you want, and restoring a Nandroid from a different device is a great way to brick.

It's also not a good idea to restore app data (via something like Titanium Backup) between different ROMs.

There's an app called. Scandisk that will b/u your internal sd to your ext sd. User data only I believe.

You can also just plug it into a computer and copy it off to your hard drive.
But to the OP, I would heed the warnings about restoring a nandroid backup on a different phone.
I'm not sure I follow the logic of installing a custom ROM only to restore to stock and trade the device in.

I think the OP wants to get a ROM running on their current phone then Nandroid it and restore the Nandroid on a different phone. Even on the exact same model of phones, restoring a different phone's Nandroid is an excellent way to get yourself a very expensive paperweight.

To clarify my logic, i wanted to turn in my phone in about a year, so I have a year to mess around on Cyanogen Mod, then when my phone contract expires down the way, upgrade my phone.

Use Google and tibu and you should have everything backed up while you play around with your phone. heed the advice on not updating app data, apps are ok, with Tibu.

What provider are you with? I don't know of any that make you trade in old phones.
That said, I would definitely not try restoring a nandroid from one phone to another, even if it's the same model.
Even restoring data from a Titanium Backup would be dicey. The best I'd do would be to restore apps only (or better yet, just download them again on the new phone). It doesn't take that long to set things back up on a new phone.

Restoring Nandroid from one phone to another of the same model is fine. It works on Android phones since the beginning of time, as long as the backup includes only /system, /boot and /data. In that case it's also a non-damaging action, since on Skyrocket, like on HTC phones, there is no Samsung weirdness of holding a recovery in the kernel, but recovery is a separate partition - and you can still boot to recovery, even if you restored a corrupted backup, so no need even for Odin.

I don't restore system data from Tibu period, even if it's just dumping it right back onto the same ROM. I've had too many problems in the past with it corrupting something or another, or causing countless FC's that fixing permissions doesn't solve, requiring a clean wipe and reflash.
I've never had a problem flashing app data, just so long as you go through the list of apps carefully and make sure that absolutely nothing system or stock (including stock email, calendar, browser, etc) is being saved. Restore user apps and user app data ONLY with Tibu and you're pretty safe.

I'm with AT&T. By trade in, I ment selling it back to AT&T for some cash value back. And I can be mistaken, but don't they also place your old sim card into your new phone?

So you've got a year to read up and learn how to not brick your phone doing it, then? There are stickies at the top of each forum. Combined, they explain how to do about 95-97% of what the typical XDA user will do with their Skyrocket. Before you can do what you want to do, you have to understand why parts of it are impossible to do in the order you want to do them, and why other parts are risky to the point that you might, if you're not careful, screw up any chance of resale.
