Nabi 2 Teardown - Miscellaneous Android Development

So I have been watching some videos today and I have a tab I am willing to sacrifice to the cause...I am trying to add gps and wireless charge...Maybe try and switch the charger port for a micro usb but I will see when I get there. I have been watching videos on doing both mods with iphone 4s today and that stupid kinabis area would be great to hide some boards. Only problem is I got all the screws out and the corners pop loose but the centers stay attached...Has anyone seen this before on a differnt tab? Is it glue/tape or clips? Any ideas?

were you able to Record a you tubevideo on how far you got ?
i havent been inside of mine yet.
i would be interest if i could get a bigger sd card in it

Gonna try to get it with a blow dryer tomorrow and see where that leads. Ill record it all incase it works.

Ok...So here we go...Got it fully apart..Took some pics. Maybe you guys can see something else that I didn't but it looks as if adding in wireless charging would be rather simple...Other than that I didn't really see anything of interest...what are your thoughts?

My thoughts: Man, there is a lot of wasted space in there. They could've made the bezel 1/4 the size and had a much, MUCH more portable tablet.
Shows they were designing for kids 100%, with no real interest in adult use. (Well, that was already obvious from the awful grid on the back panel and the lip around it even if you remove the grid and home-build a flat back panel; I am 100% certain that contrived Nabi blocks aside, the real reason they made the back like that is to stop adults buying the tablet and not giving it to a kid.)

Right on! So any thought of rear facing camera, flash, NFC, ambient light sensor? Different case entirely?
Wireless charging sounds cool, so does GPS.
Edit: btw what wireless charging system are you planning to implement? Powermat, touchstone?
Struck by my Anthrax Infected Viper4G Ev_O_nE using Forum Runner

The camera and flash sound awesome but its very doubtful we will ever see a source for the nabi so installing rear would mean having to remove the front(I think) and to be honest I use my tab for skype more than photography. I've had NFC on my phone for quite a while and ive never used it, im not even sure of a useful application for it. The idea of a different case is awesome but im thinking more to just redesign a back plate to get rid of the lip from that kinabi plate crap (I kinda like the curvy kids feel to it.)
I will more than likely go with the touchstone just cause of the price point but I'm looking at the power mat cause I'd like to be able to drop my One X on charge all night too.
Do you think it's possible to solder 2 wires from the micro usb to the charging port and that would activate usb charge?

was that the internal sd card in pic 7 ?

The one on the counter was mine, I had to pop it out to remove the board

Do we know what kind of screen is use in this application ? Also dose anyone knows what are the rest of the wires coming off the battery are for?

Not been inside myself, but extra wires will likely be for a temperature sensor and/or balance charging if the battery pack is multi cell.

I forgot of the company/site I found that takes electronic devices apart and specs them out for you part by part, component by component in detail. They charge you a pretty penny though but they provide some specs on their site. I can't recall the site name though.
Battery:

Blue = SDA?
Green = SCL?

My only guess is as knoxploration has stated.

We all know that capacity of this battery suck. My kit can kill it in few hours. Found battery like that for sale on ebay and bunch of other sources. Giving space under the hood what about if we combine two batteries wire to wire. keep same voltage but increase capacity. anyone think that this will be possible?

Would it be able to handle the amperage or does anyone know or think it would even affect it at all? Your essentially doubling the amperage while keeping the voltage the same. Voltage is one thing but Amps is another. Many components can or are sensitive to too much amperage. Maybe I am getting to technical about it as the components that regulate the power in the nabi can handle and will regulate the amperage and voltage it requires anyhow. Do you or someone want to sacrifice a nabi 2 and try it?
I want to see where I would need to try and attach GPS to the nabi 2 to get it working. Would love to look inside the nabi XD as it would answer a lot of questions.

That is why I was trying to find out what kind of screen it takes as you can buy a nabi2 with broken screen for under 40bucks on ebay. if i can get a replacement screen for few buck i will try to experiment. Or do you know if there is other battery out there that we can use that has bigger capacity.

If you could get a replacement screen for a few bucks people wouldn't be selling broken tabs for $40 on eBay.
The screen is probably the second most expensive component behind the motherboard with CPU.

So I Bought A 3000mAh Cameron Sino Battery....

Hey guys, I bought the 3000mAh Cameron Sino battery on ebay for £12.50 and I love it! been using it for almost a week now and got nothing but good words for it. I got twice as much usage compared to the original battery. I am a power user and in 15hours I still got around 60% juice left, when the original battery usually had gone 0. Sure it's thicker and heavier but I prefer to have a thicker and heavier phone than a dead one! I can play with the phone as much as I want now and use those lovely live wallpapers! And I actually have a much better grip of the phone now. One minor gripe though is that the new battery cover causes the photos to have a dark grey colour on the corners like a pin hole effect. This is not the case for videos though.

I´ll rather have my phone slim and light. I´ll just keep an extra battery in my jacket for once it runs out =)

I charge the phone daily and sometimes once again midday if I run low while at work. Even though battery life is really poor, it has not been much of a problem for me yet. Since usually I'm always near a power source (home, work and Car). I also have a spare which I take if I think I'll be away from a power source for long. But so far I have not even once used the spare, because when I'm out (over the weekends or generally out with friends etc..) I don't use the phone as much. So it works out for me perfectly. . I don't have 20 home screen widgets pulling lot of crap off the net, have the Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth radios off unless I'm navigating. So the battery lasts when I'm not using it.
Here is a video of another extended battery (Mugen Power 3200mAh) for those who are interested in seeing how it looks on the phone (seek to 0:50). Personally I wouldn't buy anything like that, its too bulky and makes the phone look really ugly , YUCK !.
EDIT :
Now something like this on the other hand is more attractive than using an ugly extended battery. It gives you more power when needed, but don't have to have it always installed. Probably a better idea than carrying an extended battery (except for the size), since you don't have to switch off the phone and swap batteries , just plug this thing in when your battery is low .

And why should you care how your mobile looks?
I've personally been considering buying a bigger battery, but might settle on an external battery pack instead (as i need more battery power only in extreme circumstances, other times I generally have a charger or computer cable accessible)

Its only 5£ and does not reuire any battery removal. Simply clip on when required. Also comes with a car charger and multiple heads...All for 5£. I just carry it with me in case I run out and its more versatile and useable than standalone accesories.

Must admit, i am tempted with this. I don't get a full day's use out of my Galaxy S with my usage, so it is mighty tempting!
I've 'bitten the bullet' and purchased one. Maybe i'll get a full day's use out of my phone now before a charge is needed!
Just noticed this thread.
I also have the 3000mah battery.
Here's a copy/paste edited and joined few my own post's from another topic.
"Ha ha,battery sure if fat. The back cover snaps on fine and power, volume,USB connector port are as easy to access as before.
The cover it itself though does look and feel cheap and plasticy, but thats to be expected for the cheap price.
(Actually when I took off the original I notice it feels just as cheap...lol. Just more classy looking cause of the carbon fiber type pattern on it)
Almost looks like it was cut out from some hard packing plastic tray.Doesnt look so bad when its attached to the phone, shiny black.
Over all though Im glad I got it. Its not something Id use every day but it will be handy for when you havent got spare battery on you,or dont wanna change the battery. Or you cant use a charger.
First charge to about 5 hours.(with wall charger). But then I dunno how much power was in when I unpacked it so I guess a more accurate time for charging may be the next time I charge it.
Looks a bit weird, almost like a diff phone.
Here's few pics I took.

I've been using a 12v Lion battery pack off ebay, about 100mm x 75mm x 20mm.
It has a 12 DC out jack and a standard full size USB port you can plug in your usual SGS USB lead for a 5v charge output. Has a proper on/off switch and even incorporates a small LED flash-light/torch in one end.
You can use it as a back up, a charger or just an extended pack. Yes it's bulky, but it gives a pretty good extra capacity, at 5v it's rated at 4800 mAh.
Just doing an extra test, running media player and co-pilot GPS with the screen on and it's maintaining charge and I think actually charging albeit slowly.
Obviously has the benefit that you can use it for anything that will charge off USB and even run 12V appliances (only 1500mAh at 12V however, but will run an air-bed inflater enough to give you a good nights sleep).
Phil
also those speaker and camera holes are useless. the camera most likely wont work correctly and you will get a picture of part of the hole as well as echo from the speaker..
just use wall chargers with extra batteries and keep an extra battery in your pocket like i always do... one reason this version is better than iphone.. ie replaceable batteries

1500 mAh battery DealExtreme $8.70

About a month ago I was browsing DealExtreme for some stuff and I ran into this for only $8.70: 3.7V 1500mAh Battery with Battery Charger + EU Plug Power Adapter Set for HTC desire Z
I ordered the 1500 mAh battery and nearly three weeks later it arrived in a yellow envelope. It works great and it comes with a wall charger for the extra battery (WITH some colourful LEDs (pink for charging and blue just for fun)). As I was just about to write this notification I browsed DX again and also found this one:
Replacement 3.7V 1500mAh Cellphone Battery with Charger for HTC Desire Z/Vision/BB96100. You might notice the lack of European power plug support, but it also is $0.70 less
You might also notice the USB port. I just tested it and it seems to be working (the red notification LED is on, but the battery icon doesn't change, might be due to the fact that the battery is already full).
I tested it and it works, so now it's up to you guys to order one if you are in need of an extra (cheap) battery!
Edit: On the wall charger is the following written on a label: For T7373 Touch Pro2 (HTC Touch Pro2/T7373/T7388/T8388)
So the battery of the HTC Vision might be the same as the Touch Pro 2?
Anyway, just thought I should share.

I hava a touch pro with a 1800mAh and the original 1500mAh battery, so after reading the post I pulled it out of the drawer. Unfortunately it doesn't fit without modifications. The size and location of the pins is the same, but there are 2 plastic slots on either side at the base of the battery that prevents it from being used.

I'm going to my local AT&T store tomorrow to check this out. I like!
I can only see the iPhone version on Incipio's site. This must be really new...let us know if AT&T stores are actually stocking these!
I hope it's 2000+mAp or I am not getting it.

That's cool, but this phone is already huge, in the picture it makes it look like it adds 20% more height and 10% more width. For battery it might be worth it tho, hehe. Anyone know how much it is? ... oh just saw $70 ... ouch, hmm. I bought an original second battery on eBay for $20, and it's doing the trick for those times when I run too low
Agree. A 2nd battery is good enough for me. Don't wanna add more weight / size to the phone

Don't worry bella, it's no bigger or heavier than the GIANT shells/cases/whatever many of us decide to put on our phones anyway.
It weighs 2 oz and ADDS 1450mAh battery capacity.
I'll probably get one to use on trips, etc. Not much of a daily driver for me at that weight. The Infuse weighs just under 5 oz naked.

I guess the reasoning is here that you have the 2nd battery already attached to the phone, and you don't have to carry it around separately somewhere.

*STING* ... lol, guess I deserved that, haha. If I see a big bulge in your pants, I'll remember it's your phone tho, so I'm not confused it might be something else, ehhe *sting back!*...
At 1450 mah it's not spectacular, but great for a road trip or flights to Asia... I'd just as soon carry extra batteries at $25 each, since I can get 1750 mah x 3 for the same price you paid for 1450, but I definitely understand the all-in-one concept, makes sense.
I wonder how long it will be before the line gets blurred between a 7" tablet and a 4.5" phone... I like the Dell streak aside from the fact it's dell, so maybe soon...

I do tend to think of my Infuse as a mini-tablet that is more or less pocketable. In fact, I haven't touched my iPad since I got it.
My fiancee did suggest I leave my phone in the car when we went to my daughter's kindergarten graduation today. It does create quite a bulge. I'm sure she didn't want me garnering any extra attention from the soccer moms. She tends to be the jealous type.

Yeh, I think guys and girls carry messenger bags or purses or some sort of backpack many places, so a few years ago I'd have called you crazy for suggesting a 4.5" phone, but now that I have one, I kinda want an updated 7" Galaxy Tab w\ voice\data capability. I almost pulled the trigger and bought the International Version of the Galaxy Tab 7" (it's unlocked, has voice and SMS enabled)... but given the slow processor I opted to wait until a more viable option comes out soon. I never hold a phone up to my head, and 90% of my use is text\data.... so I think it's my next natural step in evolution.
And LOL on the comment about the soccer moms w\ phone in pocket, hahaha
I wonder how this solution would have any side effect on the overall lifetime of the samsung battery inside tje phone.

I don't think it will make that much of a difference. It's the same as plugging it into the charger. Besides, the stock battery is replaceable and cheap.
Now if I were using the offGRID case on the iPhone, I might wonder about the long term effect on that internal, hard(er) to replace and (more) expensive battery.

[MOD/SOLDERING] Boot Kindle Fire HD 7" Into Fastboot with out Fastboot USB Cable

As I search for an alternate point to actually solder to this is the best I've got so far.
In order to completed this you must have a moderate amount of soldering experience and a damn steady hand.
EASY: First solder to the easy spot which is 3-4volts when unit is off.
Use a strand of copper from a speaker wire since the gauge is thin enough you should be able to attach it rather easily

HARD: Next what you want to do is hold the Kindle on an angle where you can access the power button and touch the other end of the copper wire to the following point. If the unit doesn't automatically turn on you may have to manually power it on carefully while touching the point.
HARDER: Solder to the point and run a switch in line for a fastboot/unbrick mod. Maybe later...
Great tut, however it seems there is much more work than to just make a fastboot cable.

I didn't want to drop 9 bucks on eBay and after like 5 USB cable disassemblies I just said screw it and whooped out the iPod Pryer and multimeter

I have another demo unit. I'll check it out for you. But I'm pretty sure the RX TX pads shown in the picture below are what your looking for.. As for VCC you can use the 3-4v wire shown in picture 1 and ground obviously the black wire where the battery connects a few wires over from the red one.
Also I'm going to do a tutorial on how to flip a demo unit into a full blown unit/cm10 soon since that was what I was doing/did to this unit. I'll be using your files and another users files do you have any objections?

Its not fun until you break it open to see how it works and make it better hardware wise. I can easily doing an inductive charging mod to this. Actually going to very soon since I'm selling my Sero 7 and keeping this smaller tablet.

There used to be a person here who had the signature "if it ain't broke, fix it"
Seems fitting for the two mods

This is mainly for modifying the demo units sold on eBay for 1/2 the cost of normal KFires. I got a demo unit off ebay for 80 shipped and flipped it for $150 fully modded with android. I then picked up another demo unit for 70 shipped and am using it for my wife. Never spent a dime on a fastboot cable which is needed for a demo flip.

err, why wouldn't you just unplug the battery?
30 awg kynar wirerap wire and copious application of kapton tape barriers is the way to bridge traces, imo.
I wonder if there's a place on the Vcc rail on the output side to pull power from. it'd be better because the current way is skipping the power filtering/protection circuits for the battery and dumping straight pack potential into sensitive chip leads.
also, i'm guessing TX/RX is the uart?
Has this been tested on a bricked model? or was it only used on demo units?
Would like to know, since I bricked my KFHD7 and am currently waiting on a Fastboot cable that wont be here till, the 27th.
Just want to make sure before I crack mine open, will report if it hasn't already been reported to work on a bricked unit

If you have the means to do this mod and have a spare cable. I'd go with modding a cable and recommend heat-shrink over tape(improper taping is poor strain relief). He did this mod because you can't exchange a demo unit and problems making a cable.

Cam Plus Module Review

Here are my thoughts on the LG Cam Plus Module:
I got the only module that my local T-Mobile store got in. I was lucky that one of the reps called me before she even put it in stock and held it for me. Awesome service right there!!!
FEEL
So far, I really like the extra heft. For those of you who remember the Verizon HTC Thunderbolt, it feels a little like the extra battery did but at the bottom and not the middle. It's a great feeling. I have fairly large hands from bodybuilding and it is a bit awkward thus far to turn the phone over to use the module. But, I think I'll get used to that quickly. Really big hands people will likely want to steer away from the module as it won't benefit them much.
The dial isn't as nice as I would like. I was hoping it would have some feedback like a traditional camera dial does, but it doesn't. Not a big deal, but I did notice it nonetheless. It is a major improvement over not having the module, though!
LOOK
It looks okay... I wish the colors were more coordinated. The gold and silver combo don't look very good in my opinion. Black and silver and then silver and silver would be good. So, I really wish they made the module in black only.
It is all plastic from what I can tell, which I don't like whatsoever. But, for plastic, it does have a good feel. I will say that.
BATTERY
This is where I have a major concern. If you look at the battery specs, it only qualifies for Quick Charge 2.0 for input and output. It is only 5v/9v for input and only 5v for output. I'll be able to confirm shortly whether or not my phone says it's quick charging or not with the module attached. I did notice earlier while using the module that while charging the phone, it heated up a bit like QC 2.0 not 3.0, for whatever that's worth.
OVERALL IMPRESSIONS
So far, I'm glad I got it. I'm on many estimates for contracts throughout the day and I can see how it will make things easier to take pictures. A lack of a case does concern me, but I guess that's what insurance is for lol (as I found out with my V10).
The extra battery will come in handy I'm sure as I'm going thru juice quite a bit. I use my phone heavily. I have two numbers going to my phone for calls and texts (gv). I use my phone at least for 4 hours a day for calls to give you an idea. I'll report back on the extended battery life and what I can determine as to the charging current with the module battery. I'm not sure how much of a definitive answer I can find without root since I don't think ampere will work without root. I've attached a bunch of pictures for you guys. Let me know if you have any questions I can try to answer.
Edit: I forgot to mention that the speaker seems to be better than the stock module. I didn't notice any crackling at higher volumes as I did with the stock module.
Edit 2: I can confirm that the module does NOT quick charge your phone. When a quick charger is plugged into the pack, I can confirm that the phone will quick charge but the module itself does not seem to quick charge judging from the fact that it took about an hour and a half to go from 0-Full while plugged into a QC 2.0 charger by itself. I have attached a picture of the phone charging from the module in Ampere.

Edit 3: I've noticed during my workout that the battery stops charging after around 15 minutes. Each time I have to turn the module back on... Very weird. Hopefully LG will change this in the future.

To turn it on, press the record button. The small circular button next to the shutter button. Just one press and voilà!
The randomness is very annoying of the charger though and the fact that you can't see the amount of charge the module has.

That the problem i had. I pressed the record buttons many time and nothing happened. I hope that a version upgrade will fix it. Thanks.
There is one thing I don't like about it is the battery dosen't really combine 1200+2800 to form 4000mAh, the 1200mAh actually charges the main battery.
And I wished they put the roller wheel further up the corner.
Apart from those, the unit looks nice and fits well, and I wish they had a pink color one, probably paint it later on and also modify it to support qi wireless charging, just have to check if there is room inside to add the mod.
I actually placed an order for a case made for the cam plus, and also a case for the Hifi plus, but have to wait till end of the month for delivery of the Hifi plus unit.

Here is some actual photo's of the case for the cam plus.
It's a jelly case made from thick TPU, all the buttons are in the right place, although you may think the shuttle button is towards one side, I think it's made that way so you can press the button at a angle.

Hi,
How can I see the status of the battery in the module? (e.g. Capacity or if it's charging?)
Got the module for free. Pretty nice, but not worth the 99€ which you have to pay in Germany. Especially the strange thing that the module battery is charging the internal battery and only if the module is active.
