I'm wondering why my phone, a Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD, spec'd as having 1GB of RAM, actually has total usable RAM of 822MB (202MB less than 1GB). My Asus Droid tablet (Transformer Infinity TF700T) is also spec'd as having 1GB of RAM and has total usable RAM of 975MB. They are both running ICS. So on my Motorola phone, 80% of the RAM is usable, and on my Asus tablet, 95% of the RAM is usable. What's up with my phone? I need that 202MB - what is using it, and can I get it back?
For comparison, I just looked at my Windows 7 notebook. It has 8GB RAM with 7.89GB usable, or 98.6%.
I suppose some small amount of the RAM is needed for overhead, but typically not much. 80% is really low and really weird, and I'd like to know what's causing this. I've googled but found nothing. Does anyone here know?
I'd assume the 20% is perminantly dedicated to system apps or apps/processes moto/Verizon deem important. Just a guess though.

In this case, yes, you are looking at a lot of RAM being used by the Video Card. But the system processes as well. There are a lot of applications that are running that you have no other option but to run (bloatware and other Verizon bullsh*t). It is a generally recognized problem with the amount of usable RAM, but hopefully when Verizon decides to remove the rest of their stuff, which they vowed to, it will help a bit. If there's something I'm not seeing, I'd love to know, but this is just what I have been able to recognize thus far.

Hello XDA I need help with finding a Tablet.
I've narrowed my search down to two devices. A Nook Tablet, and Kindle Fire. Here's the run down on the basic specs.
CPU: Both have the Same TI-OMAP 4 Duel Core Chip. Which has Bluetooth (Not yet possible) Fm Radio (Not yet possible).
Screen: Same 7" IPS Screen. 1024x600 Resolution. 169 PPI
Kindle Fire Nook Tablet
Ram: 512MB 1G (16G) 512Mb(8G)
Storage: 8G Flash 16 or 8 G
No SD Up to 32G with Micro SD.
Battery: 8 Hours (No Wifi) 11.5 (No Wifi)
7.5 Hours Video Play Back (No WiFi) 9 Hours Video (No Wifi)
Other: Ambient Light Sensor Built In Mic
Stereo Speaker
Price: $200 New $250 16G
$170 Refurbished $200 8G
The Kindle Fire has an epic Dev Community, and many many Great Roms. With a 3.0 Kernel in the works.
The Nook Tablet has a Similar Community as us, and a 3.0 Kernel.
I'm wanting the cheapest Tablet possible. I'm a poor college student, and I just want something to play games on. Watch Netflix and Hulu. I do cloud Storage.
So XDA, what do you think? (Also keep the thread clean of stupid remarks)

You should space out your post more, it's all bunched together in the comparison section.
Overall though, I would go with the nook tablet. It gives you more staorage with an expandable memory slot. The Fire started the whole cheap tablet craze, but no micro sd slot is a real turn off. Can't always be syncing stuff to and from the cloud.
If you need to buy now, go for the Fire. If you can wait, Google and Asus are working on a Tablet that should launch sometime this summer.
I bought my partner an HTC Flyer 8GB Wi-Fi tablet that we absolutely love. Has 1GB for apps, 8GB built in "sd" storage and slot for additional storage (I put in a Class 10 32GB card but others now report it can accept the new 64GB cards, too). 7" screen, fast CPU, dual-cameras, GPS. It comes with Gingerbread but there is an OTA upgrade to Honeycomb 3.2. I have not done the Honeycomb upgrade because there are pros/cons to doing so. There is also a very active developer community for the Flyer. I bought it for $199.

The Flyer has a Virtuous Support, and any Device with V support I love. Currently I can get a refurbished Kindle for 170. But I'll check out the Flyer That Duel-Core is kinda a must now. I'll check some Youtube Videos.

The Flyer is single-core but you'd never know by using it. It has excellent performance, running a 1.5GHz Snapdragon. I've not noticed any lag, especially when scrolling long web pages... very smooth.

I know this wasn't one of your options, but you should really consider a touchpad. I got mine recently and love it. Fairly active dev community, good ROM selection, and FAST. Trust me, the dual core and 1 gig of RAM help a lot. One or two minor issues, camera does not work in ICS, and wifi is occasionally flaky, but I hardly notice either of them. You can dual boot into either webos or android, and hp has promised source code this summer so all issues on the android side should be solved then.
Just my .02. But I pretty much guarantee that if you get the touchpad, you will not regret it.

I jumped the Gun. 32G HP Touchpad, allready on ICS 4.0.4. Everything but the Camera's work, and that's a Kernel Issue. But my Mother is buying a T-Mobile Flyer. She saw it was HTC, and had a pen. Bought a 32G GSM Unlocked Version from Cownow (What ever best buys warehouse store is). Only cost 275. Not bad for her, does everthing she needs.

I may be late to the game, but my girlfriend has a Kindle Fire and I have the Nook Tablet. They're both pretty damn good, but quite frankly the only thing I like more about the Nook is the dedicated home button. It's my favorite part about the thing, because the fact is that they're pretty much the exact same thing. There are some sweet cases for the Kindle Fire. Other than that, if you're going to root them then there is plenty of support for both.

You're neglecting the fact that the NT has a SD slot, allowing for more root options. You can boot CM7 off of the SD card, but it was easier for me to do that through internal memory.

As a little hardware project, does anyone think it's possible to add/upgrade the RAM on the tf. I see it as the weakest point on our beloved machine :3 I've thought of 3 options:
1. Add a better stick/another stick to increase size (optimal)
2. Change the DDR2 stick to a DDR3 (Good)
3. Optimize the current RAM, mabye run ram off of flash memory? (okay)
Is this possible? What sort of ram would be needed?

Is yes i see no reason why you can't change the ddr2 1gb to something bigger (i own reflow eq for doing mods like this)
You will need real tools not a easy mod it's a 10 out of 10 for most anyone with a high risk you might destroy your tf101
I have done 8 cable modems 6 routers a few printers and a kendel fire with good results
But i do repairs like this at work every day.
The tools used set me back about 1,900$ US
I have no problems doing the mod for others but your going to have to pay for all supplies and shipping both ways
I have been a server repair tech for 7 years.
Some changes to the kernel might be needed
I have not done this to my tf101 but i did change my tf101 flash to 32GB with no problems had to nvflash to load rom but i had known i might have to
#2
No tegra only works with ddr2
#3.1
Most custom roms do a lot of optimizing to your apps if you reboot and format catch
#3.2
Yes but bad idea it's just way to slow to be any real help
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2
darn, because tegra 3 works with ddr3. (tf prime) I don't have sbkv1, so the nvflash to reload a rom if I really mess up sounds a tad scary.. Also my budget is more like 250-300USD not 1900!! That'd be insane, I might as well get an ultrabook at that price
I'll have to settle with trying to tweak the page file a bit, thanks
Is it really possible to swap the ram in the tf101?
I would not say no to my tablet having 4gb of ram hell even 2gb
Anyone can confirm? Or maybe give a little instruction on suitable ram etc?

Technically yes, its possible... but trust me, nobody will be doing it. It is not like changing RAM in a PC, the RAM is literally a single IC soldered directly to the motherboard next to the tegra2 chip.
My soldering skills are average, so that'd be out of my league, I don't want to break it D:

So you could technically put 2-4gb of ram in the tf101?
If you edited things round a little could you also dedicate more ram to the gpu?
I just think its quite an interesting and awesome idea also i get my ram down to 250mb free or lower quite often.

I think he did say you'd need a custom kernel though. So if you know how to compile, go right ahead.
It will also depend on if the Tegra2 can recognize more than 1 GB of RAM. I read somewhere that this is a limitation that the chip will not recognize more, but I do not have the source to know for sure.
Hi! I would really like to buy this tablet but I heard from somewhere that the tegra 3 gpu and cpu needs 500mb of ram so that there would be only a half gig left to system.
So could somebody tell me what the available ram is for real on that tablet and is the amount of ram enough? And also is tf700 really worth the money?
Thanx in advance

You shouldn't judge it on how much ram it has left. RAM can be used to pre cache apps so theres no loading time. Different manufactures tweek the way android handles RAM. A tablet with less available RAM can run faster than one with more available RAM

There's not a lot that you can do to clog up the available RAM on this thing anyways....Even if you had 500MB available, what kind of applications can actually fill up that space?

I don't know how much RAM is being used, they're not available in the US quite yet. I can only guess that the system will use 500MB or less. On my Bionic, I don't have a big problem of not having enough RAM, so I don't expect it on the tablet (especially since the OS on the tablet is much cleaner than on my phone).
Worth the money? That's up to you. It has the best specs on the market right now and has the awesome keyboard dock, so I think it's worth it.
Listen to ian1, he had something important to say.
Also remember that Android has its own way of not only freeing memory used by running and idle processes, but also of managing various kinds of memory - it is not free/used dichotomy, you have to count in shared and buffered memory (you can actually see it in various OSs nowadays). I have about half of Infinity's 1GB RAM available normally (and right now), which is AFAIU free+buffered mainly.
The TF300 has a LOT of ram available on boot up. Almost a full GB I think.
Free ram is NOT a good indicator of how fast/usable your device is. Android is based on Linux, which has a philosophy of free ram is wasted ram. That is, your device will actually be faster if its ram is full. This is why task killers are considered to be so bad on Android. Just let Android manage itself and don't worry about it.
Ok thanks all I think i'm buying the tf300

So, from what I checked on the phonearena site, both phones have the same processors and graphic cards though the GS3 has 2GB of RAM vs the 1GB of the RAZR HD.
My question is this, why is it that the GS3 seems to be so much more smooth in it's operation than the RAZR HD even with custom ROM's? What are we missing?

Possibly because TouchWiz is optimized more than Motorola UI/AOSP. The added gig of RAM helps with performance too.

Ive had both, the xt912 max (cmda version of the xt910) and the xt926M (verizon version of the 925 with maxx battery) Very similar phones I can attest to everything on them but battery life of the regular versions as that is the only difference other then the maxx xt926 getting 32gb of memory.
Both have same storage roughly, the x910 had 16 and 11.8 available, plus sd card slot. the x925 has the same 16 gb and 12gb available and supports sd cards officially to 32gb and unofficial to 64gb
Everyone saying no expandable storage is thinking of the NEW droid ULTRAS are the XT-1080, those are the ones without removable storage,
For those that saythe x925/926 dont have a sd card slot, its next to the sim card tray its just a pain to get to because you have to remove the sim with the included tool that i unfortunately lost.
