No love for n8013 - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How come there not a lot of ROM development for this tablet even the 3g version doesn't get that much.

My guess is that it's a hefty price for a tablet that got a lot of bad reviews. Even though it is IMO the best tablet on the market. I think after the holiday season (when prices drop and official jelly bean is out) things will pick up a little bit more.

Bad reviews because they cant get the point of the tablet...
Compare this with an iPad is just stupid

Yea I hope the development picks up when jelly bean comes out. I had the iPad and its good in its own ways but hate the boring ui, I just picked up the Note 10.1 and I got to say I love it,the screen is not as good but everything is great. I saw a couple of people flash the 3g roms on the WiFi version is that safe to do.

I purchased this tab on Saturday, rooted and put chrack's Rom on that a few WiFi only owners were running before he made a WiFi version, it might be best to check the thread of a Rom and see if a WiFi user took the plunge and applied it.
---------- Post added at 08:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:49 PM ----------
I also assumed there would be a lot of development on this tab as it seems very powerful, but I guess people don't switch tabs as often as phones. I'm thinking of returning this tab to bestbuy & then purchase at Costco which has a 3 month return policy, if nothing picks up by then I can switch to the latest tab.

I think the reason that development is slow for this tablet is probably because of the reasons of the critics' reviews, the price, and the Nexus 10's arrival. Probably the combination of the first two was already bad, but the Nexus 10's price and screen has taken a big share of what should be this tablet's limelight..
Unfortunately, I guess most people don't care enough about the stylus to get this tablet over others, but I am glad I made the jump despite hesitating because of the reviews .

can we have a galaxy s wifi 5.0 forum?

title says it all. since its different from the galaxy s because it lacks a 3g radio, the roms and such would have to be different.
Am I the only person who thinks that this is a good Idea?
can someone at least give me a reason why not??!

that makes no sense.
the galaxy s wifi looks amazing.
I give up.
I guess no one else cares.
WOW this is an OLD post.. But woot.com had this Tablet for $169 last week and I am pretty sure there will be lots of demand for info on it.
I think it should get it own forum..
That and they were finally announced in the US as the Galaxy Player (Oct 16, 2011). I think the ones on Woot were being dumped because they were too Apple like or something and maybe they redesigned it a little, who knows. That would make sense given that they were announced forever ago but never went on sale (due to the Apple litigation?). They appear to be the same device minus gingerbread and the big "Apple button".
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4881/handson-with-the-galaxy-tab-89 (link title misleading)
So yeah I think people are going to start asking a lot of questions about them. I did pickup one from Woot and now I'm looking for Root/GB Rom.

Here's root I guess, haven't tried it yet:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1141893
I'd like to second the motion of a forum for this .. well as it doesn't have a phone I guess it's not a phone, and it's not really big enough to be a tablet, so whatever
It's pretty cool, I had a play with one today. It's basically like an oversized AT&T Infuse (5" screen vs. 4.5") without phone/4G at about half the price. I'm tempted to get one. I'm always near wifi anyway, and could get a cheapo Nokia for the little I actually use voice.
I hope one of the cooks will cook up a nice ROM for it. If Lite'ning Rom was available for it I'd buy it right now!
Actually I got an offer I couldn't refuse ($265 USD) and bought it. Hope Lite'ning Rom becomes available at some point in the not too distant future.
I would also like to see some work done on these.
Bump? There is already a Galaxy Note forum. Why not the Galaxy Player?!
I don't think anyone reads the requests here. Try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18767955#post18767955.

[Q] Why the Xoom?

Hey everyone,
I'm considering a wifi only tablet for my birthday (April 23rd), and naturally the now popularized Motorola Xoom popped into my head as a first choice. The question is, is it already being trumped? I've heard of numerous other Honeycomb tablets coming out that have equally (if not exceedingly) impressive specs and similar pricetags, such as the Acer Iconia and Galaxy Tab 10.1.
All in all, I want to know, what makes the Xoom worth it (if it is worth it)? Why have people been eating up this tablet in lieu of other impressive competitors around the corner?
I've never owned a Motorola product before, so if someone could elaborate on the quality of their products, I suppose that would help in deciding as well!
Thanks for your input in advance.
EDIT: Please, no one suggest the iPad; if I had any questions concerning that toy, I could just walk into the nearest coffee shop.
Buy what you can and when you can. Technology waits for no one. It might be the best now, tomorrow who knows.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. Live for today....
I agree, sure there will be better ones that come out and they probably will be cheaper. But the xoom is here now. Even if I knew the samsung was going to be just as good and half the price I would not wait 3 months with no tablet to save the money. I guess it depends on your financial situation but frankly if you are worried about your finances you probably should not get any tablet as it not something really anyone "needs". But even though I don't need it, if I lost mine I would buy a new one the same day to replace it. It depends on what makes you happy, the xoom makes me happy so its a easy decision for me, regardless of how others may think of it.
Every day I have it it just gets more and more useful and enjoyable for me. When netflix hits its going to better, when more tablet apps hit its going to be better, when os updates come out its going to be better, the future is still pretty bright for the xoom even though new tablets are coming.

Good thing is you have choices! LG Moto Samsung. I personally wouldn't trust LG or Acer. There is no telling when or if you would receive updates and accessories. Motorola and Samsung would be my front runners. The Xoom is here now and you can read through the forums to gage how well people like it. Samsung is a little ways away but cheaper with similiar specs. I can't wait so its Xoom here.
Do your research and weigh the pros and cons of each device. Decide what features you find more important and make your decision based on that information. We could tell you all day long which device we would buy but its all about personal preference. You gotta carry thing around for 6-12 months not us.

I would go to a best buy and play with the xoom for a while. get a good feel for the hardware and see if you like the size of the device. You mmay find it too big or heavy. From what I hear about the Samsung galaxy 8.9, it may be the one to get in a few months. The LG to me is priced too high and wouldn't dare think about getting a tablet on contract. Acer and some of the others have been unproven and will have to prove something if I'm going to chose them over the competition that has built a good reputation with android over the last few years.

no point in waiting. By the time Samsung gets here, there will be another even more impressive tablet coming.
It is similar with me and when the Nikon D300s came out. I was puzzle on should I get D300s or wait for D400 or maybe something else.
Look at this way, I got the Nikon D300s...was able to play with it and took all those great pictures with it, that I would not have been able to during that period of me waiting.
So, either buy the Xoom now and enjoy having the use of it...or wait until price drop and think back of all those days you've lost not having the fun of having it. What makes it worst to wait, the minute you buy it...it either get discontinued or replace with something better. Technology waits for no one. Get it while it is hot.

From what I have read I would say that the xoom still has the better specs. Maybe I am missing something but the pricing is similar, run the same processor and ram, same screen Res and size (although I am sure samsungs screen is more vivid), and both have micro ad slots. The xoom however has 3g (upgradeable to lte 4g which is worth the price of admission right there if you ask me), is unlockeable and most of all isn't running a horrible skin like touchwiz. I can guarentee the developer support will be greater for the xoom than any of the Samsung tabs. The only spec I see that is slightly bwtter than the xoom is the screen and the 8.9 should cost a little less and have a little better pixel debsity. Oh and the Samsung tabs are a little lighter but that is a complete non issue to me. If you want a Tablet that will.never get upgrades and run a horrible laggy, cartoony, iphoney screen then get Samsung. I still think the xoom is by far the better Tablet and won't be trumped until quad core kilel (did I spell that right?) Processors are released.
I have had the xoom since release and I actually pay to have data plan so I can't comment on wifi only (and who can it's not out but from what I have seen it is the exact same just missing support 3g/4g chip. I personally want/need 4g so I purchased put right, but for most wifi will work fine. You can always go.month to month and the extra 200 to me was much worth knowing that one day Verizon lte will be powering this beast making it all the more better than the competition. The android tablet world is just starting and I really think that the xoom is the Nexus one of tablets and that is one of the main reasons I purchased it and after Sammy announced their lineup with touchwiz on board I think this (and LG) will be some of the only stock vanilla honeycomb tablets the market will ever see especially where iit is fully inlockeable. I would suggest the xoom to anyone and the 599 price point is perfect. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck in your future decision. Hope this helps even a little bit

Agree with everything you said, except: the Galaxy Tab 10.1 32GB wifi-only will be $599, just like the Xoom. So pricing is actually identical. The existence of a $499 16GB Galaxy Tab 10.1 might be attractive to some folks, but it won't of course be the same thing.
And I know Samsung did a really good job of going back and redesigning the Galaxy Tab given the iPad 2's strengths. But what did they cut to make the thing so much thinner, lighter and, as they implied in their statements, cheaper?
I think from what I see, the two factors that get me interested in Galaxy are
1) The much brighter and vibrant screen
2) lighter than xoom
But knowing Samsung and their support level or lack there of...Xoom might be a better choice....
I personally don't care for touchwiz, and the molasses pace that Samsung produces updates is criminal. Buying a device with an OS as new as Honeycomb from a manufacturer with a proven record of bad post-production software support seems like a bad idea to me.
Also, last I checked the 10.1V (teh stock android 3.0 version) does not have microSD
I will reiterate what another use stated, head down to Best Buy and get your hands on the XOOM to get a feel for the size and weight. I've done this a few times and the more I do the more I like it. Initially it feels a little heavy but you get used to it.
The XOOM is here now, the price will be similar to other 10" Honeycomb devices coming out and many of the coming devices will have custom overlays. (TouchWiz) I'd rather have the XOOM as it's a Google Experience device and will likely be the first device to get updates.
I think touch wiz should be least of concern. I think they confirmed that 10.1 will go live w/o touch wiz and it is an optional add on patch if you chose to.
Beside, touch wiz or not, root and replace with other launcher if dont like it.

I completely disagree, especially on such a new OS that will be receiving frequent, important updates.
The 10.1V will be stock android (this is the fatter version with the better camera and no SD card)
The super slim 8.9 and 10.1 will be touchwiz 4.0

the 10.1v was the one that came out at MWC before Samsung did a big re-design to make it thinner and smoother.
Then they released the new 10.1 and 8.9 as the "US Versions" at CTIA a few days ago.
It should be said that we really don't know which models or if any will be coming with TouchWiz4.0 on them. We have a whole 2 months before the new 10.1 even comes out. A lot can change in that time, and as far as Google is concerned you're not allowed to change Honeycomb's UI, so we'll have to see as that pans out.
Guys, I just wanted to mention that LG is apparently creating a nexus/purely Google tablet - slated to be the *real* "Nexus One" of tablets and receive the according amount of updates... the question is , how reputable is LGs hardware? Truthfully, because the Xoom and the Nexus tab will both run AOSP honeycomb, I doubt updates will come slower to the Xoom from the dev community or the manufacturer.

Prime or TF700?

I currently own an original transformer and I want to upgrade. I get some hiccups here and there and I hate the way it looks. I've had my heart set on tf prime since july, but with all the problems I hear about it, I'm sort of worried. A plus of upgrading now would be that my tf101 is still sellable, in June it may not be. A peeve is the hundred dollars more and having to wait 4 months (money burns a hole in my pocket), but the screen does seem really nice, and it looks like alot of the issues will get fixed.
What would you guys recommend?
The tf700 doesn't have any thing more than the prime
It just have a better screen
_o
Well, I'm waiting - for TF700 or a new Samsung with S-Pen. TF201 has too many issues in things that are critical to me. (But I have TF101 so I have something to wait with. I'm also observing the TF201 situation and if new Transformers are without much problems I might even buy TF201.)
I'd wait for the TF700 or like tablet bit I wouldn't pre-order any of them (never again for me).
I just realized the lenovo ideapad k2 is actually better than the tf700.
It has a USB port, same screen resolution, full sized SD, 1.7ghz t3, and a fingerprint scanner.
They're also ripping Asus off and adding a keyboard dock.
I'd probably go for that one, but lenovo is probably going to throw it in the 800-1000 range.
Looks a little huskier too.
Unfortunately no more of my money will toto Asus. Half working tablet isn't a good thing.

Another question: will the Ideapad get support from users/dev/geeks? One of my colleague got a Toshiba Thrive, but he is stuck with a tablet that is not well supported even if the specs were not bad. I told him to buy the TF101, but he did not listen to me.
I don't say the Lenovo tablet will not be good, but for me and most people who are reading this forum, community support is an important factor. I think so...

Prime already has great support n more devs. Coming as soon as bootloader unlocked. We already doing great developement work without bootloader or custom roms. Just imagine once we do..

I'd say go for it. If you look at all the polls here. You will see how majority of prime owners here in xda that voted feels. Plus I'm sure you've seen all the issue threads. Not to put things into perspective. Just look at The Positive Transformer thread in my signature.

Yes, the issues that bother me the most and are deal breakers:
- GPS (I need a working GPS for many reasons, photo tagging being one of them),
- WiFi (I can't risk buying a device with poor WiFI that would be hard to replace and sell later),
- Touchscreen problems - some people reported poor touchscreen which is also critical to me because I write on my tablet a lot!
That is why I decided to wait for Samsung tablets with S-Pen (while using my TF101). It's my personal decision and maybe I could find a Prime without those problems, but it's too risky for me (it's a lot of cash for me and it's hard to replace a device in my country - not a lot of them around and bad customer service in most shops!). I saw a Prime running in Media Markt and it was blazingly fast compared to my TF101. So if there are no issues with your device it's probably the greatest tablet you can get. Still, the risk of problems is too big for me.
I was in the same boat as you... But then I ordered my tf201 on JAN 30th and I don't regret it!
go for it
i made a thread about this tfp i am using now and all i can say is that i love it, honestly. i was on the fence about whether or not to give it a go and had teetered toward the thrive, but i honestly am really loving the prime, granted the only issue i've noticed is with the gps so far but i'm having a snowstorm currently today and since this is day one of use, i'm still searching for any bugs or hangups. i'll be able to test the gps fully on a clear day and i hope it works well, but we shall see if anything new pops up that could be a deal breaker in the long run, but at this point i dont see anything that is too bad.
if you want to sit on your current pad and just pray the next replacement kills this bad boy, since you have a tab already why not wait? but if you're dying for the bigger better deal, the one i got is in great working order and came from an office depot "gmill" sub-warehouse in texas.

Well I have one (in my signature), and there is no official root I know of. However, this device is very similar to Asus transformer infinity and also runs pics, which as an almost universal root tool somewhere (don't remember where to find it). I am hoping someone would be willing to test this on the a2109, as theres many things I wish for root with. As for roms, cwm will need to be made for this and, again, infinity pad may help. But in all honesty, this is so fast that I would be too concerned for roms. Theming would be nice though

I totally agree the speed and smooth, I actually went in to get the ASUS TF300F, but when I held it was just too heavy. There are a few cons such as the camera and the lack of pretty much any accessories. I'd read on another forum that a guy got the Galaxy 8.9 case M-EDGE case for it, so I got the 14.99 one and it fits, though it is pretty tight, and doesn't close completely. It's close enough that I don't worry about anything scratching the screen. Also the way it folds does allow you to use the camera with ease and none of the buttons are covered. I've spent 4 hours searching for a case made specifically for the tablet and not even the MFG has one yet. They do have a picture of a smart cover, but it's nowhere on the site or anywhere else.
I think the people that make non OEM products have bought into the reviews slamming the tablet so much that they didn't decide to make anything for it, which is pretty sad. It's an awesome tablet for people on a budget and doesn't like the garden wall of the KF, lack of additional memory of both the KF and Nexus, and IMHO the specs are awesome. The salesperson did a bench mark test in store and was totally shocked at the rankings it ranked well above all the big name tablets, so at 259 I was definitely sold.
Speaking of the screen, I've viewed it at every angle that I use and there was no problem. I've previously owned the Toshiba Thrive 10.1 and this baby blows it out the water with ease. I kept my KF because trade in went down to 35.00 from 75.00 within a week.
Maybe with people giving positive feedback, more retailers will carry products for it.

I've been posting reviews to every site I can think of, except Amazon. They still haven't gotten their **** together regarding the A2109 specs. Probably a campaign of FUD to sell their own products. Newegg, though, has very few reviews so far...
For those of you not on the Lenovo forums yet, there is now a dev ROM for the A2109. Right now we're at the point of having root, cwm, and a ROM free of bloatware and deodexed -- ready for some theming. Not like I've done any of the work -- by "we" I mean thanks to mcl we now have it.

Well, I took the Lenovo A2109 back to Best Buy today and swapped it for the ASUS TF300T 16GB for a 90.00 difference. They have the same specs under the hood based on a few quick searches on the web. Honestly I hated to do it, because I rather liked the A2109, but the screen kept doing these weird flashes. At first I thought it was something I was doing, but I googled it and it's a known issue. I decided that with the screen already being the only bad thing about the tab and then the flashing I'd just go with something else. Luckily BB had the 16GB ASUS in stock, since it wasn't there the last few times I checked.
There seems to be more support and accessories for the ASUS tab as well. I've not had the chance to test it yet because apparently you have to let it charge a couple of hours before you can use it. (Thought I'd have to make another trip to BB)
I'll update on my blog when I get some play time with it. Just before I took the A2109 back I ran AnTuTu and Vellamo tests on it for S&G and it ranked pretty high, so I want to see if the ASUS tab does the same thing.
I can't post any urls here as a new member, but there is a link to my blog on my profile. Just case anyone is interested.

$90 more? Ooooh... I'd ask for a refund and see how this turns out

Spec wise the Nook tab can't touch the ASUS or Lenovo. The only place it would be beat the Lenovo is the screen. Right now the ASUS is running stock JB and still out performing the Lenovo, which I bought for the specs in spite of the screen.

I'm thinking about picking up one of these tablets.. any idea if they've been rooted? Any custom roms?
Thanks
Bought this tab probally about a month ago didn't see any rooting methods. I thought I would sit this one out for about a month and see what the devs have come up with. None of the work goes to me (I am just a noob) but I just thought I would share this link with you regarding this tablets develepment.
Because I am a noob I cannont post any links so you can view my profile to see the link

There is considerable development on the ROM front on the Lenovo official forums. I can't link either because I'm a n00b too, but with just a simple google search using the model name bought it up.

Just picked one of these up tonight -- primarily for the family (non-techie wife & 2nd grade daughter). We've used it for a little over an hour and I'm already noticing random screen flashes. So far they're not anywhere near annoying enough to think about taking it back, but I'm keeping an eye on it. So far very, very pleased!

Excellent! I have noticed the screen glitches myself, and they don't seem to become more frequent or serious over time, so I think what you see is what you will get. I suppose you notice them more when you are concentrating on it. Ordinarily a defect like this would drive me crazy, but for the price I'll overlook it!
Come on over to the Lenovo forums if you want to talk to a larger audience

That's good to know (that it doesn't seem to get worse). Is there a forum area focused on this device?

The only forum so far is at Lenovo:
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-IdeaTab-Slate-Tablets/bd-p/Idea_Slate
There are multiple devices in this forum, not just the A2109. There's a reasonably active group of users over there tho.

I just wanted to come back let you know that the ASUS TF300 is indeed awesome. Even though the two tablets share most of the same specs, the ASUS tab seems to just fly and I have to admit the screen alone was well worth the additional money.

Yeah? I'm jealous. Of course, at this point I'd be pre-ordering the Nexus 10 if I were willing to pay more than the $250 I shelled out for this guy. The one thing I would miss, tho, is the convenient size. I really like how easy it is to handle. The 10" on the Gtab were a little much for me. Rationalizations... But now I have an upgrade to look forward to -- after mcl & I get an overclocking kernel running

I've been thinking about the Nexus 7 inch since the 16 GB model dropped to 199 to replace my KF. I still think 7 inches is the sweet spot for a portable tablet, and I'd also love to have the "true" Android experience with out MFG tweaks, but that will be after the New Year and who knows what will be available then. They seem to be introducing the next big thing every week now.

Love my note 5

So I know there is probably some thread here referring to how much they like their note 5 bit I was a hardcore iPhone user and I'm now a note convert. I've had a couple replacements, and t-mobile sent me a new replacement in a box that I want expecting I was assuming ib was going to just receive a refurb well, since getting my replacement the screen is the best one I have had on a note so far and is build quality is amazing. I love how much Samsung has finally slimmed down their skin and Even with a few small hiccups here and there is smooth and fast. I also love the amount of updates i have received since buying this beast fix almost all of the small problems I did have with it this is the first Android phone I haven't wanted to root just downloaded package disabler pro and got rid of bloat and it's fast and battery life is pretty good and I love wireless charging and fast charging. I'm so excited to see what Samsung has for marshmallow. Who's with me!!!!!!

I really love mine!!!!
I love mine the most! :silly::laugh:
Time for a Note 5 love in!
After coming from a OnePlus, this is genuinely the first phone in years that I haven't felt the need to root and modify. Clearly there are some KNOX issues with doing that, but even so I'm really happy with the camera, battery, and general performance. Glad to see Marshmallow coming next month which should make things even better.

Did you not care about warranty?
You can flash back to stock if you need to exchange. But, I'd have done it anyway. To answer your question.

Never have when I've exchanged one. I've exchanged with t-mobile and Samsung.
Not only do I love my Note 5, I obsessively adore it ?!
I, like many xda members, am a total smartphone nerd & have had a plethora of phones from ALL the major manufacturers. And this device truly takes it to the next level! I cannot stop geeking out over it... What the heck-a-rello was I waiting for?!?

This phone is great I love the screen and feel like samsung took a little to long to release a phone that is worth to me buying. I'm actually going to buy another one the gold platinum version of the phone now that Tmobile has it, I'm so EXCITED MY WHITE AND SOON TO BE GOLD WILL LOOK AMAZING.

Glad you like it. After all, it was designed for people like you- the "hardcore iphone user." The very existence of this device is a slap in the face of the "hardcore" note/galaxy users. And anyone with this phone, claiming to be a hardcore Samsung, and is not a developer, is either a mindless consumer drone or a no-nipple having Samsung sheep. SHAME ON YOU Samsung for placating to the soylent green apple fan club... SHAME!!!

Please get that non sense out if here, it's not a slap in "hard core" note users faces, it is still a very powerful phone with great battery life and future proof to and extent. You think because Samsung got rid of a plastic back you can remove and a slot to expand your memory it was an intentional slap In note users faces, i just don't see the the logic. Samsung was imo was trying to get with the times, also every with and exception of a few oems have enclosed batteries and no expandable memory. I think LG is probably one of the few who didn't get rid of it and look how well the G4 did for them TERRIBLE if you read the G4 forum there are nothing going but complaints every where bad screen, bad battery life, runs hot etc. On a side note I'm in software development and thus phone would not interfere in anyway with me using it to help with my job. So shame on sour Note users who do not like progression.

I'm a "hard core user" and it's the best phone I've ever had. I'm rooted, running Tek's rom, Skyhigh kernel.
Not sure which jedi mind funked into believing the removal of features equal progress but you have been severely misinformed. And I know your influence wasn't from the darks side because Apple doesn't remove features, they only steal them from android and present it to the mindless mass as Innovation. Enjoy your sealed battery and 64 measly gb of storage. Just be sure to buy a memory stick to shove up your glass... and while your at it, go ahead and fork over that extra doe for more data bc you'll be spending more time in that lovely cloud... and don't forget to insurance because not only is that $800 device the most fragile device on the market but it also a non removable battery constantly depleting behind that nice shinny glass back... and don't get in the habit of recording in 4k because it will make short order of that 32/64 gb, much like gear vr files.

... and No, you are not a "hard core user." You, my friend, are food. I'm sure Samsung is deeply appreciative of you nourishment; helping them make it through the winter so they can try again next summer ... hopefully learning from their mistakes (ie note 5 and s6).

No one is going to take you seriously with that attitude and bigotry.
On topic: Yeah this phone is a delight. Running the MM leak right now.
Can we keep this thread on topic thank you, I didn't make it to have people come here to complain about how Samsung did them wrong personally. Oh and Bruce Lee Roy you have ever some major issues not a phone that "lost features", if a phone a a thread about how much people like or love it make you this much of an geriatric butthead you have other things you need to be seen for, maybe a therapist will do you some good. Also me and my 800$ piece of awesomeness will have a great time together. While you sulk like a 2 year old.

I had almost every top android device from late 2011 to late 2014. When iPhone got with the program and offered a 5.5" device and 128gb of internal memory I jumped ship for a bit. Just missed the camera, fast charging, and little tweaks you could do with Android so back at the note 5 I am and loving it. Truly disgusted they offer a 128gb S6 but leave the real flagship stuck at 64gb but I'll get over it.
Cant wait for the MM update and the Note6 eventually.
