Philosophy and Goals
Android is an open-source software stack for mobile phones and other devices.
Origin and Goal
Android was originated by a group of companies known as the Open Handset Alliance, led by Google. Today, many companies -- both original members of the OHA and others -- have invested heavily in Android, typically in the form of allocating significant engineering resources to improve Android and bring Android devices to Market.
We created Android in response to our own experiences launching mobile apps. We wanted to make sure that there would always be an open platform available for carriers, OEMs, and developers to use to make their innovative ideas a reality. We wanted to make sure that there was no central point of failure, where one industry player could restrict or control the innovations of any other. The solution we chose was an open and open-source platform.
The goal of the Android Open Source Project is to create a successful real-world product that improves the mobile experience for end users.
Governance Philosophy
The companies that have invested in Android have done so on its merits, because we believe that an open platform is necessary. Android is intentionally and explicitly an open-source -- as opposed to free software -- effort: a group of organizations with shared needs has pooled resources to collaborate on a single implementation of a shared product. The Android philosophy is pragmatic, first and foremost. The objective is a shared product that each contributor can tailor and customize.
Uncontrolled customization can, of course, lead to incompatible implementations. To prevent this, the AOSP also maintains the Android Compatibility Program, which spells out what it means to be "Android compatible", and what is required of device builders to achieve that status. Anyone can (and will!) use the Android source code for any purpose, and we welcome all such uses. However, in order to take part in the shared ecosystem of applications that we are building around Android, device builders must participate in the Compatibility Program.
Though Android consists of multiple sub-projects, this is strictly a project-management technique. We view and manage Android as a single, holistic software product, not a "distribution", specification, or collection of replaceable parts. Our intent is that device builders port Android to a device; they don't implement a specification or curate a distribution.
How We Work
We know that quality does not come without hard work. Along with many partners, Google has contributed full-time engineers, product managers, UI designers, Quality Assurance, and all the other roles required to bring modern devices to market. We roll the open source administration and maintenance into the larger product development cycle.
At any given moment, there is a current latest release of the Android platform. This typically takes the form of a branch in the tree.
Device builders and Contributors work with the current latest release, fixing bugs, launching new devices, experimenting with new features, and so on.
In parallel, Google works internally on the next version of the Android platform and framework, working according to the product's needs and goals. We develop the next version of Android by working with a device partner on a flagship device whose specifications are chosen to push Android in the direction we believe it should go.
When the "n+1"th version is ready, it will be published to the public source tree, and become the new latest release.

I'm coming from cile's build, and made a full wipe, being sure i'm clean

Good job DK, I was wondering though since I read your post on cile's thread what are the differences between this rom and cile's.
Are you continuing where cile left or is it a new rom? One more thing I noticed is that this is using an older kernel (3.0.36) when cile's was on 3.0.50.
Anyway I'm leeching now, gonna give it a try a bit later.

Awesome will download while at work, my question is what's different from Ciles rom apart from the kernel? I don't want to go do the whole set up since I have change a lot on the build.prop and apn

[Contest][Developers Only]Free Fascinate to the best development idea.

I received this Samsung Fascinate from RootzWiki.com at the Big Android BBQ. I don't need it.
This device has UnBrickable Mod applied to it. It can handle any firmware which you apply to the device. It cannot be bricked under any circumstances. You can always resurrect it with software. The device has a cracked screen, it is an asthetic problem only. The device is fully operational and ready to be used as a development device for any purpose.
Here is a link to the device http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SCH-I500RKAVZW
So, here's the contest rules:
1. Simply post up what you would do with this device and if you have the best project, you get the device.
2. There are no other rules. Just state what you would develop on this device and it could be yours.
This contest will end on 31 October 2011.
I've received PMs about the judging. Here's how it will work: I will narrow it down to a few projects, and then I will ask XDA Recognized Developers in our chat room to pick from the final few. I just want this device to go to someone who will develop something useful for the community.
Further the Glitch kernel on that device by:
Eliminating bluetooth echo
Work on keyboard pop-up in low signal areas
Further improve in-call audio tweaks that we have already starte
Further tweak voltages to allow more devices to overclock.
Have it open for whatever wierd stuff people want to try (like booting WP7 or Nexus S Bootloaders)
1.I would test my apps on it, that I have developed.
2. I would also get back into the ROM business and put out the best AOSP ROM I possibly could!
3. I would test anyone's ROMs that need tested (but the dev doesnt have the phone)
4. I would replace the screen
5. Release more themes for Fascinate ROMs
.
Only Developers please, any other post will be deleted
I've received a few PMs about how I will pick the winner. Well, I put some thought into it. I'm going to let Developers pick the winner. I will narrow down some of the better projects and then let the XDA-RDs pick the best of the best. This way it's fair and it's not just me saying a single project is the best.
I'd probably build a kernel for it.
I'd love to take on writing a new bootloader, maybe true dual rom support, etc..
But I doubt I truly have the skills needed to pull off such a thing.
=]
This is what i will do, as a dev:
1) Build my own u-boot (and try to make it running)
2) Update the whole kernel source of SGS/Fascinate to the newest 3.1 (still in RC)
3) Build Debian + 3.1 Linux kernel to run natively under our devices (sgs/fascinate)
4) Do some experiments about debugging with Arduino as output processing system
I have just bought a new arduino, so i think is time to start real development!!
Thanks in advance Adam!
Greetings

When you mean only developers, do you mean only those with "Recognized Developer" in their profile, or anybody who develops?

No. You do not have to be recognized to be a developer. It helps. Its easy to see who's a developer and who isn't. Just look at threads started... If the topics are mainly asking for help on remedial tasks, that's not a developer. If the topics are mainly releases or advanced subjects, that's a developer. I wont exclude people for their membership status. I'm looking at who can use a development device and who's going to actually use it as a development device to help the community.
It was given to me for development... I developed it and made it better with UnBrickable Mod and I added a battery cover. My project is done. I want someone else to use it as a development device. I'm hoping to give someone an opportunity which will benefeit the rest of the SGS community in some way, shape, or form. I wont judge based on anything except the project and likelihood of followthrough. Finally other developers will decide who gets it.
Noobs to XDA can be more skillful then Recognized Developers... I'm not concerned with titles.

Wow! Big Arrow eh?
Why me ? Simple.
1. I would develop the **** out of roms for the Fascinate
2. I am working on a dualboot linux environment and android (let the user choose in the beginning)
3. Rethinking and remaking a recovery (first steps taken)
4. Because I think I can pull all this previous **** off.
alright , hes probably not aware of this , and I will pm him a link , he already owns a fascinate and hes my favorite dev in the SGS community . his XDA name is sbrissen
from TSM , thats who my vote goes for ...

if i got it i would port roms over and get xboardermod up and running and mybe evena aosp hybrid rom i have on g2x, g2, and sensation

I would work on porting linux kernel 3.0 to it, mainly because the device apparently cannot be bricked and this would greatly benefit the portable open-source community, I would also use it as a testbed for having a tablet without Dalvik VM or the google android OS, which I so dispair at, instead I think I'd use UClibC to port a minimal x-server or if I am feeling adventurous an SVGAlib frontend. I think thats about all I could do with it but I think it's quite impressive for a n00b. Also I suppose I would have to adda blog to my website to update you all on my progress ;~)
Edit: (additional infos)
I do already have an advent vega with vegacomb and have made some trivial apps for that to display my previous web-dev work but I just remembered I am playing with psx4droid and aDosBox source to make it work & more usable on vegacomb, maybe I could also update & test it on this device and release it on here (I will never post anything to the market, sorry I hate google)

Hey Adam,
If i get the device i will make a SGS II port like on the Samsung Galaxy S I also alot of Fascinate users have PM'ed me to port my rom onto their device. So now its all upto you.
Thanks,
Faryaab
I'm not a "Recognized Developer" on this board, but I do work on embedded systems (arm, powerpc, x86, etc...)
port u-boot to fascinate and enable fastboot. (See: [U-Boot] Fastboot gadget, v2)
investigate ubi/ubifs to replace yaffs2 (faster, and dynamic partitioning) without xsr/fsr/tfsr, you have to use raw mtd. See: Raw Flash vs. FTL)
performance improvements
port to other Galaxy S, S2, and others.

About Carbon
CarbonRom is an aftermarket firmware based on the Android Open Source Project. We are dedicated to fast, stable, and feature-filled roms, honesty and communication with our users, and openness with our code. We like frequent builds, with the very latest and greatest hardware support and fixes. Special thanks also go to Slim Rom for some of their features, PA, AOKP, and anyone else we may have borrowed commits from that hasn't been mentioned here. If you feel you have been unfairly left out, please - let us know.
While we make every effort to test these builds as much as possible, we are not responsible for anything that may happen to your device, family, pets, or perception of reality. We ask that you do your part to know your device and know how to recover from problems before you flash! If you have questions, ask your fellow users or ask us in #teamcarbon on freenode IRC.

Support
We spend an astonishing amount of time developing this software. We can't spend much time on XDA as a result, so if you need support, please try the following:
1) Search. Search, search, search. Yes, you. I don't care how unique or important your question is, it's very likely someone has adressed it already. Especially if you're even close to new at this.
2) Read our FAQ, which can be found on our goo.im page linked above. It's new, but expanding fast. Just like us!
3) Ask a question in your device forum. Someone will no doubt try to help you. Warning: this help may come in the form of telling you it's a dumb question that has been asked before. See step 1 - such are the perils of asking questions when you haven't done the research yourself. Android is about helping yourself.
4) Join our G+ Community: http://community.carbon-rom.com This is where we spend the bulk of our time and the best way to reach us and other community members. We update and frequent this community far more than XDA, simply due to time constraints and the convenience of G+.
5) Ask a question on our IRC channel. Connect to #teamcarbon on irc.freenode.net or click here. You'll find several other Carbon fans and usually one or more devs as well. Please be polite.

Working/not working?
Looks excellent! Could you provide details on what is currently working or not working? A lot of JB roms have wifi/mobile connection problems or non working cameras.

Bugs:
- Torch works, but high brightness is the same light level as normal. Option does nothing.
- InspireMod does not do anything, either. Settings->about still says Desire HD (this also occured on your PAC-man ROM)
- Switching WiFi APs crashes gapps, Facebook, and Facebook Messenger
- Settings->Carbon Fibers->Device Tunables does nothing.
Other:
- Bluetooth seems to work fine.
- Cellular seems to work fine.
- Camera and gallery work exceptionally well. Camera takes much better pictures than the one included with your PAC-man ROM
- If the WiFi worked, then I would use the ROM on a daily basis. Since it doesn't, I'll probably be switching back to 10.1 unofficial or something. This is a very smooth ROM so far...
I forgot to change the boot.img from PAC-man ROM to Carbon ROM. *facepalm* Now WiFi works!
I now condone this ROM as my OFFICIAL everyday use.
Nothing in this Rom works, it just bootloops or freezes. Sorry.

Remembered to format/wipe and flash boot.IMG?
Inspire 4G. I'll test your ROM.
Also, very high ram usage. 564MB used right now with nothing but XDA running.
Fails to play YouTube videos.
Also fails to check email automatically.
Inspire 4G. I'll test your ROM and give you a bug report.
Hi @CedArctic , I was using your previous Carbon rom with JB 4.2.2 and now switched to this one to test it out. I find that it's very smooth, but this are a list of things that are not working properly:
- For some reason, every google app installed with the package you provided, FC at some time.
- Video recording does not work. At all.
- Mobile Data works sometimes. When I switch it on, the icon constantly appears and dissapears until some minutes later it fully works and turns blue.
- Very high ram usage, not one app opened and I just have 29mb free.
I will test some other things like music and video playback when I have the time and get back at you. It would be cool to know if you read this message, thanks!
I think I'll stick with CM10.1 Unofficial until a near-bugless CM10.2 comes out for my Inspire 4G.
Thanks for the offer, however I have decided it's time for me to upgrade my phone. I'm going to leave my phone the way it is, and then sell it when my new one arrives.
If anyone is interested in it please pm me. Again thanks for the offer.

Gapps 4.3 link is dead. These should work. http://www.androidfilehost.com/?a=show&w=files&flid=7775
can this ROM work on HTC desire or g2
This did not work at all for me. I was able to get it to boot but when it gets to the initial setup screen everything stops working and you get an endless supply of error messages that don't go away.
You and me both
Downloaded twice, both times full of FCs. Great ROM - what a waste of our time.
This ROM has been added to the index thread.
I was able to install it (did full wipe) but I am unable to get the keyboard to work. Every few seconds, I get the message "unfortunately android keyboard (AOSP) has stopped". I installed google keyboard but cant get the prompt where I can change the input method.
Any ideas?
---------------------------------------------------------------
Edit: fixed! uninstalled the AOSP keyboard. its working fine so far. I have not tried cellular service (using it on wifi only, a spare phone)

The 2nd link is also dead.
Can anyone point me to an active GApps 4.3? Can I use the one from http://goo.im/gapps?
Does This ROM support Screen Mirroring?
This rom would be awesome, if the data connection would work properly.
flashed rom after flashing gapps, the data got broken.
wiped again, data worked until first "random" reboot.
went through in the settings, and when i hit quick titles row setting the phone rebooted and since no data. not looking forward to a fix since the thread and the phone itself is dead, but still a shame would be a daily used rom for me if data would work.
Anyways its smooth and very nice, and did not got any reboots just that one mentioned above.
I tried to install this ROM, but stucks with "Carbon" logo, any idea?

INTRODUCTION
Secrecy is where you can safely put your files without worrying that others will see it... They just can't.
I am starting this project since I have tried a number of Apps for secure file storage, while not finding one that best suits my expectations:
- some, like Vaulty and Hide it pro, do not store videos securely and just stores the raw file
- most only support storing pictures and videos. I occasionally want to store word documents but can't find a way.
- some produced by major software companies are simply bloated and litters temp files everywhere... That's just as insecure as not using them.
I am aiming to produce an all-rounded one that maximizes security but still ensuring ease of use and quick encryption time.
(Tailor-made for keeping your *precious* photos(or files) from your geeky dad/mom/friends/whoever-they-are's prying eyes.)

### Welcome to Secrecy.
I believe you come from XDA or Play Store, and you are interested in helping out in our project. As you may know, I started this project off with myself, but when it gains popularity, it seems that I cannot do everything on my own. Thus help is needed badly to breath new air into this project.
### Wait, I'm not professional.
Frankly, I'm not professional too. I'm just, as you think of it, a kid with thoughts. I'm looking for all kinds of support, and you may find possible roles in the latter section.
To put it simply, no one is unfit to contribute. From newbie to experienced, everyone is welcome!
### What can I do?
At the moment, I can think of the followings:
* Translators
* Quality Assurance (Testers)
* Collaborator (Code Contributor)
* Marketing advisor
* Design and Promotion
... You name it!
### What can I make out of it?
I don't work for money. It is not possible to repay you with money. However as a contributor, you could get a life-time worth of donation package. You may message me when you are a member and I'll add you to the list.
It is practically the Google Play's testers list, that when you try to purchase the donation package, Google Play does not charge you.
### I'm in! / I wanna know more!
Please contact me at [email protected] and specify the followings:
1. Your Github username (If you don't know, here's it: https://github.com)
2. Your preferred role, if any
You could also migrate directly to https://github.com/SecrecySupportTeam and get started with the source code!

Hi,
Does your app create 'containers' like EDS on Android or Truecrypt?

Nope, it simply:
1. Finds the file
2. Copy it to "SECRECYFILES"
3. Encrypts it
4. Done!
Of course truecrypt as it name suggests, is the best crypto in the world, yet I would consider it as an over-kill solution in this problem.
Besides using them depends on deep hardware/root functions and may be incompatible for a number of devices.

Awesome :good:
Also, How was the app icon done? I see alot of icons like that and thought it's a program or somewhat
Off topic:
What is that app in your activity center? Is that for adjusting the display brightness?
suggestion: An option to hide the app from the drawer, or atleast, change the app name to something less suggestive? An app named 'secrecy' would only indicate that I have something in my phone which has been hidden.

Yea it's lux auto brightness. I've tried a number of apps to automatically adjust screen brightness but this one, so far, is the best.

Have you ever considered open sourcing your code? Maybe to celebrate a beta milestone? :victory:
Is the source available?
This app (screenshots) looks great. Thanks for that enthusiasm and work!
Would you consider to make the source code available for that app, please?
Q: Why?
A: Some people (me too) havn't a google account and can't get apps from google play. It would be awesome to see your app in open source stores like F-Droid or somethin'. And IMHO people could trust more in your <security> app, if they have the possibility to see what it's doing, (by parsing the source). And last but not least, also some other developers could help to make that app more stable as it's already seems to be :highfive:
Thanks in advance for any response.
Nice one! I'm trying to find a nice app like this for a long time. If one could move the vaults to USB OTG storage that would be awesome!

It is really surprising to find myself on the Portal!
First, I have to thank WILL VERDUZCO for such a generous introduction even though this app is still far from polished state.
I am not disclosing the source since it is still a 7-days old project, everything is messy with TODOs everywhere and e.printstacktrace() (FYI. it is a line of code that causes apps to crash when it panicks) on almost every file you could possibly find. Thus when the project comes to maturity the source will be on github. As for security caveat, I am using encryption libraries from java, so if you trust java you can trust the app (LOL).

Shouldn't I be here Nah I just write device code nothing more.
Not all features are available yet.
Features:
Welcome to VanirAOSP. Our mission is to deliver a clean optimized version of Android with subtly improved versions of the features you love to as many devices as possible. we've tried to incorporate and improve our features in a way that makes them more cohesive to improve the overall user experience while correcting any performance regressions and improving functionality..
What to expect:
- This is not a McCopy ROM. What goes into our build is well thought-out and not a bunch of stuff duck taped together because we could.
- maximum optimization. We do our research. We test hard. We build -fstrict -O3 globally and include a massive array of code optimizations and memory leak fixes that we write ourselves and eventually submit to AOSP or Linaro.
- originality in our source. We generate a lot of new commits being features or general code improvements. We are open source to share and improve the community but we also try to make sure we offer a unique experience.
- aesthetics.. hopefully in your opinion
General features:
stock mode - ability revert to stock AOSP code with the exception of a few custom features we chose to keep active
enhanced performance.. longer uptime with less slowdown
custom written CRON and init.d.
UI and graphics improvements
custom navbar, navring, and hardware key features
improved notification handling (active display & halo are in review also)
usability improvements like power reboot menu and sound
animation control
Improved Vanir keyboard
CM's profiles & quicksettings
additional quicksetting tiles
immersive mode
statusbar mods
clock & battery mods
lockscreen blur and other mods
soon to come -> quick cam and flash notifications
busybox, embedded root, init.d, cron etc
yatta yatta yatta
more to come when i feel like updating the op

Currently no , we do plan on porting those in the future as we know that's something most people want. I plan to include them in a separate installation I don't think it should be a default installation for everyone.

Not bad ROM, however after installing this ROM the tablet is only a 'Shield" device by name. Play Store recognize it as "NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet", however all Shield exclusive apps (Shield Hub, Half Life 2, Portal, etc) are marked as not compatyble.

Yeah that is one thing that may require the build.prop to be modified. I'll play with it today and see what needs to be done, I was playing with getting stock apps working. I have shield hub working and I can stream.
I did a quick search and found this app , market-helper/. It let me download HL2.

i'd say, for me, 100% yes
i'd love for the shield tablet to operate as intended, and also be customizable through roms.
would it be enough to do a titanium backup of these apks (directstylus launcher, shield console mode, shield wireless controller, shield hub) and just restore them through?

Nope. Some apps might work but there are required lib files and things that will not be backed up in the process. I've been trying but haven't had a ton of time yet. I'll work with it some more this weekend.

So far this os is better for gaming, than the original, since games are more smooth running under this os. Too bad Shield apps are missing...

Everyone knows what it's like to comb through the forums on a new device to find ROMs, kernels, apps and all the other customizations that come out of the community.
It's a mixed bag! It's satisfying when you do find something that really appeals to you, but it's also frustrating because a forum just simply isn't the best platform to show off a lot of the modifications we use. A lot of great content, be it wallpapers, icon packs, themes or even homescreens get lost in a sea of text lists, acronyms and giant threads
So we've come up with a way we think will help better promote, organize and support independent development in our community.
It's called XDA Feed!
Each device is supported by the community! You can contribute links to your favorite ROM, Kernel, Wallpaper, Thread, Homescreen, Icon Pack, Video or Article and help support your device with content.
Features
Browse, view, download and share the best content on XDA for your device!
Custom built in Download Manager supports resuming cancelled/failed downloads
Filter out content you're not interested in
Star content you're interested in to look at later
Granular notification control: opt out entirely, batch notifications to certain time intervals and specify which content you want to see updates from

FAQ
Q: Why does this app exist?
We all know there is a ton of cool stuff you can do to your phone, but navigating the XDA forums to find it all can be a bit daunting. This app is a curated "feed" of all that stuff you wish you knew about, so you don't miss anything.
Q: Wait a sec...why are there multiple versions of Feed?
This is deprecated and per-device builds will be removed soon. Make sure to grab the all devices version for the latest & quickest updates.
Q: Why not just integrate this into XDA Labs?
We wanted to separate the functionality of Feed because we have some very cool stuff planned for it. You'll see!
General Limitations
Download History only shows items actually downloaded by Feed itself. Due to the Play Store TOS, this means Apps and Icon Packs are linked to and as such won't show up in Download history. We're not opposed to still including those downloads in the history, they just aren't there at the moment.
Roadmap and changes
Roadmap

Like mentioned in the news post, OP, etc, this is a beta release and we're specifically targeting two devices. Unlike other apps, this app is literally a curated feed of content for the OnePlus 3/3T. Yes, there's content all devices can use, but the backend data right now is largely manual and can't be done for every device automatically.
As we work on the app and grow in terms of features, usability, stability, etc, we'll also work on automating more and more parts of the backend to be able to include all devices.
This is the type of app I want to see for my device (and for the record I don't own a OP3/3T), but we can't get there for all devices over night. This is the first device supported and while you may not benefit from it, there are hundreds of thousands of users who can.
Using your logic, a ROM would be pointless if it didn't exist for every device. Certain ROMs and kernels exist for specific devices and that's the way XDA has always been. This is that in app form.

As we work on the app and grow both in terms of features, usability, stability, etc, we'll also work on automating more and more parts of the backend to be able to include all devices.

No,my logic do not say rom should exist for every device,do not please turn my logic over. Simple,i think there are devices and manufactures who deserves more from u,from xda,not to follow only popular ones at the moment, there are devices that in way helped to build this site and i think u need to give deserved atenttion to them, that's my point, not that app needs to be on start for all devices,i know that needs a lot of work. Please sir do not bend my words, thanks, and that is all here from me. All the best with this work.

You said "Make it for all devices or not make it at all". Imagine if I went to a PureNexus ROM thread for the Pixel and said that because they didn't support my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact?
The fact of the matter is that unlike HTC or Samsung, OnePlus has actively reached out to the community in ways very few OEMs have these days (or ever, for that matter). The site may have been started to largely support HTC devices, but HTC has done very little to support our community and their efforts seem to only be decreasing! I say this as a longtime HTC owner who maintained ROMs for HTC devices for years.
I'm going to drop this line of conversation now, but I needed to address the point. It makes sense for XDA to target their largest base of users first -- many of whom own the devices specifically because of the efforts OnePlus has made to engage and support our community.
@blk_jack Telegram channel doesn't seem to be chatty Have you finally gave up on IRC and jumped on Telegram boat? Congrats with new app tho

Clearly I'm too used to IRC and screwed up the Telegram channel. I wanted a group, not a channel. So here's the group! https://t.me/xda_feed

The OP makes an app for a device he owns thats how it works, he is under no obligation to make anything for any device. I must say if you are requesting him to make it for your device it doesn't sound like a request but more like a demand which certainly isn't allowed on xda

Read again,he does not own that device, and i have no requests here,u have no need to quote me,i have already said what i have to OP. If u are frustated in any way, find another way ,nothing i said is adressed to u,and i am here for long long time, and i know xda rules very good,do not teach me. If u new moderators or whatever wont to delete my posts feel free, but do not quote me without any need for that.
