[Suggestion] General News Section - General Topics

Hi All / Mods,
Here's a suggestion from my end:
Can we have a section dedicated to general news (Android, non-android, tech, non-tech or general knowledge related) ?
I mean any kind of news / headlines in your neighbourhood / country, it'd be good to go thru quick news around the world while browsing thru the forums once a while...
What say you?

Good idea mate, stuff like the latest goss ie
"On November 11, 2012, (only 4 days ago) Apple and HTC announced a 10-year patent deal to joint license all current and future patents which both companies own. It is predicted that Apple will make $280 million a year from this deal with HTC"
or
"Apple Successfully Patents Rectangle With Rounded Corners, Patent D670,286 was issued to Apple yesterday, and what it clearly focuses on is the outer edge shape of what could be pretty much be anything"
But I think it should be kept Smart Phone related which would interest everyone, not general news which would tend to get a bit clicky when ppl start talking about events in their own neighborhood which wont interest ppl on the other side of the world
What do u say Mods???

Exactly, this is what i'm talking about, sometimes you tend to miss a breaking news on ur busy day !

I too love the idea
However If mods don't find the idea of other news 'unrelated to tech ' Good, maybe just related to Tech would be fine?

XDA/Samsung

Hello Guys,
My name is John, I recently became the social media analyst at Samsung mobile. I wanted to start opening the lines of communication between XDA and Samsung. First I wanted to say I have noticed your work on our devices on the XDA forums. I think you guys do an outstanding job, I myself am a developer for mobile devices. So let’s get down to business, we’re going to be in Austin from March 10-15 for the SXSW(south by southwest http://sxsw.com/convention). I was wondering if any of you guys are going so that we could meet up and share a couple of ideas I have. I am looking forward to meeting some of you GREAT developers!
Thanks in advance,
John

I honestly hope you are authentic. It is about time that the people who make the phones embrace the superior developmental process.

Or at least attempt to embrace some kind of something. That'd be a start for Samsung.
Sounds like BS advertising to get people in seats at this event.
Interesting...go through his previous posts once, not exactly his first time posting on the forums...

Yeah, sounds troll to me, but it will be nice for them to show here...and learn a bit of how things are done

Yes I am the real deal, I am a developer/social media analyst. I don't mind taking a picture of my badge or something to prove my credibility.

I think he's legit, folks.
If you are indeed an analyst for Samsung, welcome to XDA. I'm sure you've already noticed by now that there is a lot of cynicism both for Samsung and your claim of being an employee. Simple reason for this is that most everyone here feels that Samsung has ignored their pleas for help, didn’t deliver promised upgrades, and left millions of Galaxy S owners with buggy software/hardware, etc.
If your goal is to reach out to Samsung users at the grassroots level, you're in the right place. However, you also have a tough job ahead of you. The disenfranchisement runs deep and it will take a lot of effort to fix.
Here are some suggestions for you to escalate internally within Samsung:
1. Support the development efforts of the XDA developers. There are many talented people working quite hard to customize, fix and generally improve Samsung firmware. Samsung should make some effort to provide these developers with source code, tools, and help.
2. Take an honest and upfront approach to product defects that find their way onto store shelves (e.g. GPS, battery, etc). I guarantee the cost of addressing the problem will be fully offset by the shift in customer loyalty. An unreliable product is perceived many times worse if the OEM denies or ignores the issues.
3. Set a release schedule with carrier partners and stick to it. Apple has set the benchmark for frequent over the wire software updates. Android applications are updated with fixes and improvements on a regular basis. In stark contrast, our firmware lags far behind Google’s releases and FOTA is failing more than it’s working. This has to change. Samsung needs to push out regular firmware updates that are applied seamlessly without loss of data. Forget FOTA and do it like Apple does OTW (over the wire).
4. Allow users the option of switching to AOSP. Some people like TouchWiz and some don’t. Give them the choice.
BTW, in addition to being an informed consumer, I work in the mobile industry. I know a fair amount about how it should work. The Samsung Galaxy product suite is performing very well but the real question is how long will it last. Loyalty takes effort to maintain and is easy to lose.
P.S. I may very well be at SXSW but I won’t know for sure until a week or so beforehand.
I understand I have a lot of work ahead of me. As I said before, Im here to establish a partnership with XDA developers. Inbox me to let me know if your going to be there so i can arrange somewhere to meet.
If he was legit, one of the Admins would be announcing that SamsungJohn is a rep from Samsung; he wouldn't be doing it himself as a post in the forum.

You would think that someone who is in the position he claims to be in, would come in a little more professional than just a random post.
He said he has been lurking the forums and likes what he sees. So he has also seen all the dissapointment that is running through these forums as well.
If you were in his position would you not want to come in here, with support and proof of who you are? (there is multiple threads of the same post in other categories, all have been asking for proof for hours)
I'm not saying hes not who he says he is, just think he could have introduced himself a little better.
Guys, do a little research. Pretty easy to figure out that he is either very thorough or he's actually legit.
Maybe we should tell him that it is a welcome first step to see him here.
He is an analyst so he's going to have to escalate pretty far up the food chain to be effective. Hope you're a good communicator John.

wp7, android, ios... a messed up game of rock, paper, scissors.

After visiting techblogs of all three of these operating systems I've come to a realization. The majority of them report about 70 percent on their own OS and the remaining 30 percent is dedicated to bashing another OS. Wp7 blogs do it to android, android blogs do it to ios, and ios blogs do it to everyone. While I understand that each OS does things that the other can't, when I go on a tech blog site I like to read news regarding my OS of choice. Earlier surur, the admin of wmpoweruser, posted a blog titled, "Google Korea offices raided due to Android anti-trust concerns." now, what business does this have being on a windows phone site aside from bashing android. I understand that android is an OS many of you love but honestly, when I go to a windows phone site reading about android is not exactly on my to-do list. Its just not for me. This is, of course, the fault of the staff on these blog sites and quite frankly I don't see why they bash for page hits. Every OS can do things others can't, no one is any better than the next for everyone, but unless the site is a mutualistic site like CNET (though they're largely biased) then there's no reason for these types of posts.
Bashing another os? No!?!?!

Last time I rememer, a mac blog reported about a windows 8 leak. When asked why, one of the guys on IRC replied, "This is because a mac can run windows too". WTF?
Usually, most of the blogs do this to maintain traffic. Probably because a majority of their user fail to generalize between facts or true justification and instead are impartial to their beloved product. They love other products or their rivals being bashed about.
Not that I'm saying that this is the case with everyone, but with most of the people.

Agreed, but it comes off as petty. I won't be visiting wmpoweruser anymore because despite their often informative articles, their delving into the dark side of the android world makes them look childish.
This is one of the most stupid thincks in the Internet but also in the real world.
Its not only when it comes to the os but also to brand model and many other products.
People want to be sure that the things they've paid much money are the best and want to persude other people with this opinion.
But it's realy annoying
If you're bashing another os, you can't very well focus on own ks nkw can you?
Don't worry. They are compensating for their lack of something particular, if you catch my drift.

positive competition is a good thing to customers and users, since it means different OS will develop more new features to attract users to join them.

Apple and Google 'anti-poaching' agreements..your take.

Was going to post in Off Topic, but I thought this might get buried, and thought it mighty important, also, general and on-topic..lol
As you may have heard, there is currently a lawsuit from some devs against software giants like apple, google, adobe, just to name a few. The lawsuit alleges that these major software companies have agreed not to hire anyone from a rival software firm while they are still working for the rival (i.e. Apple treats you like crap? Google isn't going to hire you and treat you any better), what's more they agreed to tell their rivals when one of their employees is submitting their resume and seeking employment at their rival firm. Also, after you leave, they don't want you working for their rivals either..there was talk about even FORMER employees being blacklisted from employment at rival firms.
Recently emails have surfaced between Steve Jobs and CEO of Adobe at the time who informed Jobs that his anti-poaching agreement was 'likely illegal'. As someone who is getting into development now, and am quite the noob, this really lifted a veil off of a world where corporations are using the developers and then ruining their careers or locking them into having to work for the same company, if they want to work at all, for the rest of their career, without opportunity being given to have better benefits because of an almost mafia-like agreement between these software giants.
Is this typical from you guys' experience?? And what is your opinion on it..if you have one..
Most of the places I've worked at have had some kind of similar thing in the contract. It's generally been that I can't work for direct competition within a period of x months after leaving the company. I've never heard of anything going into the depths you've mentioned though, but if Mr.A and Mr.B agree not to employ each others staff then I don't really see what you can do about that.
http:// http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/20/steve-jobs-anti-poaching_n_1220244.html?ref=technology
Tell me what you think about wonderful pacifist lefty Jobs now ifanbois lol
Also, Google 'FOXCONN'..that place is awful, another thing that troubles me about technology and apple specificlly..apple directly employs over 100,000 people, and indirectly over 700,000, yet only 45,000 of those jobs are American, mostly designers and the guys who work at Corning making gorilla glass for i-stuff..I was looking at becoming an engineer or programmer, but I'm beginning to wonder if it is a 'morraly sound' decision lol
I dunno what exactly the government doesn't like about it, unless the rules are in place to keep companies from hoarding skilled employees on the assumption that it gives them some kind of competitive advantage.

Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
...oops, but forgive i don't understand why this would be in 'android development' 'android general' because it isn't about android specifically..but many smartphone manufacturers/software companies not excusively android (???) forgive i sound dense..but I did read and do follow the rules (I thought!) so I just want to know exactly why this was not considered to be in the right section (the news article I posted was actually Apple-heavy, definitely not 'android development general discussion' thread material I thought surely.. )

Samsung & Android Future

Hey just starting a topic on this subject to see what everyone feels will be the direction Google's Android and other smartphone companies will take now that Apple has cried foul and gotten awarded millions which I think is just sheer absurd and an blantant abuse of patent laws, lucky for them the jury wasn't too tech savvy to see the sheer outrageous claims apple was throwing out. I mean seriously the judge should have thrown the book at apple!!!!!! Big major differences are glaring right there... Apple devices generally come with just ONE to 4 buttons max and of course their own IOS while the others come with what? ANDROID and usually 4 to 9 buttons max.
Sorry if this post has been started elsewhere. I'm trying to get my post count up so I can help bugbash on several different phones I'm tinkering with! This type of activity from big corps scares me. I have seen my other favorite testing hobby get killed and stiffled to the max purely because of such corp doesn't want to work too hard. Makes me wonder WTH is America coming to these days?!!

First of all, there's already a few threads like this around on this site. Please use he search feature to find them and post in one of those instead.
Secondly, it's really not advised that you state in your opening post that you're simply trying to get your post count up.
If you wish to have something posted in a development thread, please check out this --> I Will Post Your Question In The Dev Thread IF....
Read through the thread I've just linked to and if you meet the criteria, post your questions in there and the creator of the thread will post what you have to say in the dev thread for you.
Velcro. What a rip off!

Nokia Teases with Google Android (JellyB)

Does this mean they're aiming at Android or interested in it?
After a few years of losses, top executives to be fired, staff to walk out and recently a 'backhander' from Microsoft showing that Micro will not treat Nokia special I hope it means they realise the company's future depends on the *near guaranteed* steady stream of revenue that would come from Nokia Androids.

Why facepalm?
Imagine how good a Nokia Android phone would be
Facepalm with frustration! If they do join Android, it's about time!:fingers-crossed:
I think a decision to stick to Micro is political, not a business decision. I understand there will be commitments that they have to meet with Micro, but WHY not continue generating money with popular, established platforms like Android? That's what a commercial company should do; aim to make money and follow where the money is, not be polticial (or stubborn), in my humble opinion lol
Actually it comes across as more of a dig at android like saying "our phones will eat android for breakfast" not a cryptic hint they will embrace it but if Nokia were to make an android phone I'd consider it for my next phone over Samsung LG Motorola and HTC as I used to love my nokias and I think they could make a very good android.

it's basically cheating the search engines to earn fly time on the news & blogs by throwing in the "jellybean" on it.

Could they be in more dire straits? After a user above linked that site showing news of a possible shareholder EGM to get the Nokia chief out combined with many negative news stories referring to MicroNokia's vague Q4 2012 release dates, I mean really?! Does Nokia think this is the only path to bet all their fortunes? What a shame, I hoped to see what Nokia would do with Android. Those colourful designs would be a good addition to the black sea of generic handsets.
I would say they can have another few years of wasting cash, time and market share, but Elop doesn't have time on his side. Seperately, a lot of business people are saying that about Balmer too - if Windows 8 flops, so does he.
Well as someone already mentioned this is just Nokia saying "Our new phones are going to be eating Android(4.1) for breakfast".
