Nokia Teases with Google Android (JellyB) - Android General

Does this mean they're aiming at Android or interested in it?
After a few years of losses, top executives to be fired, staff to walk out and recently a 'backhander' from Microsoft showing that Micro will not treat Nokia special I hope it means they realise the company's future depends on the *near guaranteed* steady stream of revenue that would come from Nokia Androids.

Why facepalm?
Imagine how good a Nokia Android phone would be

Facepalm with frustration! If they do join Android, it's about time!:fingers-crossed:
I think a decision to stick to Micro is political, not a business decision. I understand there will be commitments that they have to meet with Micro, but WHY not continue generating money with popular, established platforms like Android? That's what a commercial company should do; aim to make money and follow where the money is, not be polticial (or stubborn), in my humble opinion lol

Actually it comes across as more of a dig at android like saying "our phones will eat android for breakfast" not a cryptic hint they will embrace it but if Nokia were to make an android phone I'd consider it for my next phone over Samsung LG Motorola and HTC as I used to love my nokias and I think they could make a very good android.

Could they be in more dire straits? After a user above linked that site showing news of a possible shareholder EGM to get the Nokia chief out combined with many negative news stories referring to MicroNokia's vague Q4 2012 release dates, I mean really?! Does Nokia think this is the only path to bet all their fortunes? What a shame, I hoped to see what Nokia would do with Android. Those colourful designs would be a good addition to the black sea of generic handsets.
I would say they can have another few years of wasting cash, time and market share, but Elop doesn't have time on his side. Seperately, a lot of business people are saying that about Balmer too - if Windows 8 flops, so does he.

Well as someone already mentioned this is just Nokia saying "Our new phones are going to be eating Android(4.1) for breakfast".

This is old news, regarding Oracle. That article would make you think Android is about to crumble, and that is not the case. At least he points out that re-writing the code, slightly, would make this go away.
Google has way too much power/$ to not fix this for Android, which has exceeded their expectations wildly.
In short, do not fret. Apple just being scared, as they should be.
Just like Jobs said recently via an email that Android is tracking people and that they do not.... ignoring all the articles about apple tracking people lately.
EDIT, haha, just noticed he said Symbian would likely benefit (which is dead).... sad considering how much Nokia stock I own (frown face)
The iphone makes up 50% of Apples revenue stream now so Android is a massive threat to their business. Totally idiotic for a company or that size to have most of their eggs in one basket if you ask me.

How can you compare a hardware/software vendor to a software vendor?
When google is able to claim it makes the hardware its software runs on, then you can start saying Android is a "threat" to apple.
Google and Apple are entirely different beasts. Apple makes money when it sells its hardware, it includes the software "free" with its devices and it has always done this with any of its products.
Google makes software for multiple vendors, and makes zero hardware.
Apple has always been pretty sue-happy, moreso than other phone/computer manufacturers.

i would like to add 1 small piece to this although apple are a hardwar/software vendor it does contract out to people like samsung , so this apple google is also apple samsung writ , android and samsung together is a bigger threat to apple and apple think by sueing (as most companys do and would do in the same situation) both samsung and google may slow them down or as is most likely with the release of all the new smartphones ie galaxy s 2 and new nexus phones will generate a feelling within buyers that apple sell a better product because others are copying , this is not a serious attempt to stop android but with the timing so close to may first release date for sgs2 is more of a marketing exercise , for instance when google lost a case recently they had to pay 5 million $ where as if they had payed for the licence out right may have cost them 50 million $ dont take these figures to seriously but you get the idea this is the way business works and will carry on working as has been said before apple will still buy from samsung google will still develop android licences will be paid for in one form or another and someone will use somebody elses idea to improve their own and tommorrow will be another day
Thank you for the information.

Sort of, it's powered by google as all android phones are, but it isn't MADE by google, it is made by HTC, and the Nexus S is made by Samsung. Google works with the companies closely for these phones, but the phones themselves are not manufactured by google, and I'd be willing to bet google doesn't design the phones and pic the internal components to them either so much, they probably have some influence, but I'd be surprised if they had complete control when it is the manufacturer who stands to make or lose money on the phone based on sales.

That's because their own OS fails. I want to know what Micro$oft software over 70% of android devices are using that require royalties. Unless microsoft just kind of walked up like a 5th grader standing angrily over the kindergarten kid playing in the sandbox demanding lunch money, which seems to be the case.
Microsoft at this point make a lot more off of Android then they do from Windows Phone. All of that licensing money goes right back into feeding the current sink hole that is Windows Phone. Microsoft can do that though, they hemorrhaged for years on the Original Xbox
i am really curious to see what patents they are using that every Android OEM is so scared to challenge. (Accept Motorola who damn near invented the cell phone)

It's actually not about specific patents. Microsoft is following IBM's playbook from the 1980s, which goes like this:
In the 1980s, attorney Gary Reback was working at Sun Microsystems, then a young technology startup. A pack of IBM employees in blue suits showed up at Sun headquarters seeking royalties for 7 patents that IBM claimed Sun had infringed. The Sun employees, having examined the patents, patiently explained that six of the seven patents were likely invalid, and Sun clearly hadn’t infringed the seventh. Reback explains what happened next in this classic Forbes article:
An awkward silence ensued. The blue suits did not even confer among themselves. They just sat there, stonelike. Finally, the chief suit responded. "OK," he said, "maybe you don't infringe these seven patents. But we have 10,000 U.S. patents. Do you really want us to go back to Armonk [IBM headquarters in New York] and find seven patents you do infringe? Or do you want to make this easy and just pay us $20 million?
After a modest bit of negotiation, Sun cut IBM a check, and the blue suits went to the next company on their hit list.

Most of the patents are trivial nonsense (no one will convince me that "method to update the phonebook" is a brilliant invention worthy of a patent). But fighting even those costs a lot of money. Possibly more than simply paying the extortion fee. So Microsoft gets away with it.

Yes, you read that right, Microsoft makes almost as much from Android sales as they do through sales of their own Windows Phone devices. That’s more than Google makes from the Android, which the company gives away to manufacturers. It is worth noting that Android users generate ad revenue for Google, which could add up to $1.3 billion in 2012.

You're basically saying that just because one company has a good year with hand sets that they should be the only one to EVER make a device under that OS.
So, Samsung should be the only android device because they were (arguably) the most popular OEM in 2011?
Maybe no one can really tell the difference between the OEM's on the windows side because it's all the same ****. No one is allowed to make it any differently. With Android phones each OEM has a very distinct way to make the device function.
The lumia 900 is probably going to be a good phone. But then again I guess it's about time.

Its official - court rules that Motorolas patents cannot be used against Apple

http://fosspatents.blogspot.com/2012/02/motorola-cant-enforce-standard.html
German courts have made a ruling that means if Motorola tries to use its most important patents against Apple in a court case the company will be in violation of European Anti trust law.
As the article says:
"Apple scored a breakthrough court victory today against Motorola. Its important can hardly be overstated. This is so huge that it even begs the question of whether Google's strategy for its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility has failed before the deal is even formally closed (they're still waiting for some regulatory approvals)."
It would be nice to see Apple bought down a peg or two but the way things are going its likely to be Google-Motorola (and therefore also Android) that is on the losing side.
After all Motorola cannot use its genuinely essential patents in court now and yet Apple can still use dumb ones like voice search, touch screen, text completion etcetera that although every decent phone nowadays has these features Apple own the patents to and have been able to use in court cases so it seems Apple now have the upper hand.
Dave
Why, yes, Apple, you can patent intuitive actions on your devices all you please; and don't worry about those pesky other companies patenting worthwhile operating features, we'll make them play ball with you. Hahaha, let's go smoke this cigar together and laugh at all the little people.
this is getting hilarious...they all should concentrate on developing new devices instead of sueing each other. I hate Apple for all these lawsuits...

They can't develop new devices without violating apples patents anymore. When the new phones with android get released after mwc you'll see more lawsuits against those models too.
Apple will win because they have patents that are not subject to frand so don't have to let people use them.
Odd thing is that apples licence offer to motorola, which stopped the injunction on iphones in Germany, is still less than motorola asked for yet judges order them to not sue apple as a result.

First of all you have to consider the source of this information to be able to evaluate the spin on this. Florian Mueller is a anti Google/Android pro MS mouthpiece who tends to be clueless.
This is a lifting of the preliminary injunction. The case itself is still pending, but It'll likely to take quite a while to finish up. Granted this isn't good news for Motorola, but it's NOT the end of the road.
Check out Groklaw for a different slant on this and other issues (eg Oracle/Google)

The problem lies not with Mueller’s analysis—but with his impartiality. The engineer is right when he says that Mueller has the knives out for Google. Even a casual reader of the FOSS blog can easily discern that Mueller is quick to amplify any legal setback for Google’s Android or its affiliates. His tone can be crowing and haughty—see the tendentious “Google scores an Own Goal” post about Motorola (NYSE: MMI)—and for all the world echoes Microsoft’s own “they’re getting what they deserve” attitude to Google.

whats the future with android

do you all think that android gonna have good future with apple making more profits than android?
Apple will probably use the remaining 84bn in cash to buy google.
Android is the future.

Android is doing in the smartphone market what Microsoft did in the desktop market in the mid to late 90s. They offer a lower cost alternative where prices stay competition due to competition between OEMs. The fact that Apple is trying to sue Android OEMs like crazy shows that it is a threat to them.
Dead and gone in at most 2 years. I won't miss it.

Apple is all over sueing android supporters with patents.
This aint even missing a thing. This shows that android is making its way too fast. biggest advantage of android is, it is open source
Could be dead with apple and MS taking over.

Android will go the route of the Linux system. Used by true techies and not understood by the rest.
Maybe
I don't think so, it will used by all, and only understood by experts...
Well I should hope this is the case..After all you are not comparing Apples to Apples (pun intended).
Apple is a hardware company that sells hardware products and digital services, predominantly software and media, whereas Android itself is free. it costs nothing, so it cant make a profit.
If you look beyond the "gee whiz" numbers of their growth you will see that Apple leads in two markets, that of tablets and download content however market share in download content, smartphones and tablets is falling...So i suspect that the only folks really worried about the state of apple is apple themselves... their continued growth (at current rates) is frankly not sustainable.
Note: to compare Apple Vs apples (its full and complete competition) you would need to sum the numbers of the following business:
1. Microsoft & all PC manufacturers
2. All PC software sales
3. Android portion of all mobile manufacturers
4. All android tablet manufacturers
5. Google
6. Amazon market, and all Amazon download media
7. Napster and all other media download sites.
So, if you can be bothered to do that, you may see that Apple < competition.

Ok ....... let me ask you a few questions which should hopefully put things into the kind of perspective that would have avoided this thread altogether.
A: Is there a future in the airplane industry for Airbus since Boeing keep getting all the big contracts ??
B: Is there a future in the oil industry for Saudi Arabia since Russia produces more oil than they do ??
C: Is there a future in Gold mining for South Africa since China mines more gold than they do now (allegedly with some assistance from slave/indentured labour).
Z: Is there a future in the God business for the Catholic church since Islam is growing much faster and Muslims seem more devout. (For the humour challenged am joking)
etc, etc, etc ........ i assume you get the idea, its called competition and the world is full of it in every industry you care to mention and lots you wouldn't.
done now ???
In these 2 years - if I'm wrong correct me because I'm quite new in android OS - android has become quite popular and because of the open source it might be avocative for developers as in present as in future.
And that Apple would buy android I can not imagine.
Android has been outselling iOS for a while now.
But iOS is beating Android with way more freezing and crashing. So I guess iOS wins in one aspect, more crashes!
Android will win.
Long live open source.
Check this Android vs iOS video series to be debrainwashed!

That's probably due to the high profile court cases this week where some androids were banned for violating patents such as being able to act on a phone number you've been sent in a message (data tapping) and having a unified search feature (siri patent).
People rightly get annoyed when a big company patents things that were in use before the patent and then uses them to stifle the competition.

Its those kind of Apple Fanboys that gives good and kind iPeople a bad name.
Let them KEEP BARKING LIKE STRAY DOGS. They are afraid that their iOS is loosing to the New Generation of Android phones, so inorder to stay in top they are trying to make android's position low.

Pretty sure apple patenting anothers ideas then suing over people using them is just a little worse, and does more to hold tech back, than motorola who are owned by google allegedly charging a high price for patent rights.
One copies existing ideas and then stops rivals using them while not allowing them to licence the rights, the other own patents vital to tech products and lets anyone use them but possibly overcharges.
Pretty big difference between them.

The thing about Apple getting in hot water over frand is that they didn't pay the frand rate at all.
Motorola objected as it should be paid.
Now Apple have entered into a frand agreement, however they want to have their cake and eat it by not paying for the time they were illegally using the patents.
As they hadn't entered into a frand agreement with Motorola back then, Motorola is not obliged to charge a frand rate and so want to charge a compensatory rate that punishes Apple for breaking the ethics of frand. This upsets Apple and the protectionist US authorities.
Had Apple played by the rules in the first place they'd not be in this mess but they wanted to rip off Motorola so must pay the price.
This is xda not androidCentral or imore. Keep the fan crap out!
It is time a new OS to pop out and steal everything the others got lol
We will have the perfect smartphone and they can spend all their money in court muahahaha

Yeah I have too, it's quite funny to read through, honestly.
Just proves how "evil" Apple is. A company that plays dirty tricks to stifle the competition is highly unattractive towards me.

I bet the American court system won't have the balls to ban sales of the Xbox 360 due to the courtroom loss of Microsoft to Motorola since Microsoft is an American company.
Looks like there already is a new os make by mozila, with a android kernel and a "mordern" UI~
