I have searched high and low and if I missed the answer to this, you guys can feel free to flame away.
I frequently get the complaint that it sounds like I am in a club or something on my end during a call. After a little experimenting, I believe the phone is using the speakerphone mic during a regular call and I have no idea why. I can move the phone as far away as I can reach and the person on the other end says the volume of my voice doesnt change. It doesnt always do it but when it does, it seems to require a reset to stop it. Speakerphone isnt turned on and I am still hearing through the earpiece so I cant understand how in the world the phone wouldnt be utilizing the mouthpiece.
It did this with the stock ATT ROM and does it with NATF v4.4 too.
Is this a known issue? Is there a fix? Should I swap my phone? Thanks for the help guys.
im 99% sure there is no such thing as a speakerphone mic
If there is no speakerphone mic then how does the phone pick up sounds so differently during speakerphone mode? Ultimately, even if there isnt a dedicated mic for speakerphone, the phone is apparently utilizing the "speakerphone method" of picking up sound from my end so i guess consider my question rephrased.
How does using a headset effect the transmitted sound? Perhaps the built in mic is defective.
It seems stupid but I havent actually thought to try that yet. The next time it does this, which will probably be sometime today, I will give it a shot and see how it reacts.
I mean, does anyone know for sure if the speakerphone utilizes the mouthpiece as it's mic? The mic is clearly treated differently during a speakerphone call but I dont know for sure by what method.
This is a very frustrating issue.
Could this have something to do with the setting (in system tab) 'Microphone AGC'? ..I know it says it effects the microphone during recording, but could be worth a shot..
I just checked that setting and it is disabled so I guess AGC isnt the culprit.
I could have sworn I read about this happening somewhere else on these forums but I couldnt find it for the of me.
Does anyone elses phone echo when using the ear buds?
i personally do not, how would one replicate your experience so i can double check.
mine work fine with no echo at all... at least when listening to music.
is it when you're listening to music? or on the phone? theres an EQ setting that sounds a bit tinny, maybe thats how you have it set?
Both I and my brother have had this problem. We have also had it with iphone ear buds and skull candy ones. So I don't think the issue is the ear phones. It' s better with my new bluetooth but I have heard a slight echo a few times. Typically it seems to be that the person on the other end will hear an echo until I stop using the ear buds.

Yes thats the prob I was having.
It doesn't echo during music or to me, but the person on the other line in echos whenever they speak loudly. I was think both mics were enabled but nope thats not it. I turned off noise cancellation and that didn't fix it either.
Only echo I had was when the person on the other line had me on speakerphone. Doesn't happen with music or any other phone calls for me
doh, really? try ur test again with u guys in rooms in opposite side of house.
try turning off noise cancellation when only using headset speaker
Lol did you skip my thread?
Aight just plugged the headphones into my DroidX and it does the same thing. Whenever it get loud the person you are talking to echos

ah i guess i did. my bad.
ne1 else gettin this?
This is about the earbuds that come with the phone. I have not tried a dif set. Just so you guys know if your trying to reproduce this.
I watch movies w/ them but haven't done phone calls. I'll try some calls later.
So we want to talk extra loud, turn off noise cancellation, and sit in the other room as people? Why?
I don't do any of that, nor does anyone that I talk to. hence I don't get any echoing.

What are you talking about. If you are on a phone call using your earbuds and the person on the other line is talking loud it will echo to them, not you. And if you never talked to anyone on the phone who had to speak loud to overcome background noise then ....
What the other post was talking about was just to reproduce what is happening so we could get to the bottom of it.

generally if we are somewhere that has background noises, our phone calls can wait.
and I don't echo to anyone. nor does anyone else echo to themselves.

Great!
Has anyone tried aftermarket ear buds with mic?
As I said, I have tried multiple after market ear phones with echoes. I believe this is a phone issue and not a problem with the ear phones. The noise cancellation settings perhaps.

I've turned off noise cancellation and it still did it.
Echo on headset
Yeah I have the same echo when using the headset or bluetooth.
Actually the echo is always on the other side all calls I make with headset or bluetooth complain about an echo on thier side. I never get echo for music/videos
If I unplug the headset incall they tell me the echo goes away.
I disabled noise-cancel and enabled it still problem, it didnt do this when I first got it so I deleted all the apps I installed since.. but still doing echo in call.... ugh does anyone have a fix for this?
recommendations?

So my cousin bought this phone yesterday and during his first phone call noticed that he could only hear the other end of the call thru headphones or speaker. Verizon replaced it without question and there was no issue there. Was just wondering if anybody else got a defective device.

My first replacement had a bad ear piece. Cracking when turned up during a call.
My volume is low on earpiece during calls. I can't hear much unless I am in a quiet room. In my car with road noise (New B'Mer not very loud) I can hardly here other party

If you're talking about using ur phone up to your ear, speaker by front camera, I would say replace it! Mine is very loud on full volume, honestly the loudest cell phone speaker I've ever had for the regular speaker, not talking about speaker phone here.
When you call granny, does she keep saying "Huh?! Wut?!" or does the conversation flow pretty well? Rate this thread to express how you feel about the Huawei Nexus 6P's call quality. A higher rating indicates that calls are clear and crisp, and that regardless of background noise, you can hear the other party clearly (and with ample volume) and they can hear you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Call quality is just fine. However I have a bug where if I start a call on speaker then switch to handset, the mic is muted. Gah!
When you hang up while you were on speaker, do you still here that annoying peep !!!!!!

Call quality is excellent but on T-mobile, I randomly lose LTE data and only get it back by rebooting the phone. Not cool.
2 Verizon phones here, many callers complaining of the call sounding "muffled" on their end....have found other reports online of the same issue. Pretty good on my end, but apparently not so great on the receiving end.
Google Fi and have had no issues with call quality. Though today I had issues with my proximity sensor not detecting right during a call.
Did the conference call to compare nexus 6 with the 6p. Definitely muffled sound. The other party always complain. So returning this unit, getting another one tomorrow. On t-mobile network.
On Verizon, i get a noticable buzz as my contact is talking and my volume is Medium high or above. on headset. Has anyone else experienced this?
Sounds like mixed results so far. For those that say it's muffled, what are you comparing the call quality to?

With HD calls on T-Mobile I hear static behind every sound. Besides that everything is fine and calls sound great

Mine almost sounds like the speaker is blown out during calls but not when music is played or anything. Also, if I connect Bluetooth during calls or a device other than the phone speaker, the static goes away :-/
I'm getting a very clean call quality on Google Fi. It's much louder on both ends compared to my old 2013 Moto X on Verizon.
As with previous Nexii, the proximity sensor doesn't work properly. Sometimes when ending a call, I take the phone away from my face and notice the notification shade pulled down, because the proximity sensor didn't activate and turn the screen off soon enough.
Also slightly muffled on most calls for verizon.. Only time it's not may be when it's on HD calling with someone who has it..

I posted a fix for this over on reddit. Apparently what is happening is the noise cancellation is interpreting your voice as noise and is attempting to cancel it resulting in a muffled sound. Turning off in call noise cancellation seems to solve the problem. To do this you need to edit your build.prop. The easiest way is to download a build.prop editor. Open it up, locate persist.audio.fluence.voicecall, and change it to false. Save and reboot. Should solve the muffled sounding voice problem.

Thanks, I know that's the fix....it just blows that root is required (I could easily do it to mine but my wife has no desire to let me root hers). After experimenting, the easiest "fix" I've found is to just make sure the bottom speaker is more in line with your mouth and that you don't let the phone "slouch" more vertically (resulting in the bottom speaker being closer to your shoulder).
I am on T-mobile in the US... I was getting comments like speak up.. Sound like you are in a tunnel.. It turns out that covering the noise cancelling mic on the back with your shoulder or a pillow etc causes a problem..
It seems like you have to have root to turn off that feature.
But most of the time calls are clear...
I'm switching from my Nexus 6 and so far my reception is better, and my wife says that she can hear me much better than on my old phone. I am using project Fi

If you use Bluetooth or actually hold your phone, then you will be fine. It seems that the problems appear when you try to use the phone without hands by placing it on your shoulder and covering the rear noise cancelling mic.

Hi,
When making a phone call, the receiver of my call complaints that he almost can't hear what I'm saying. When I then switch to speaker, I can be heard fine. Isn't the phone using the same mic for both normal conversation and speaker phone?
Is there maybe an issue with noise reduction? I remember back with the Nexus phones, that the noise reduction could sometimes make a phone call difficult to hear.
(OnePlus 7 Pro on 9.5.11 and now also with 10)

Are you speaking directly into the mic? Is it noisy around you? Is it noisy around the other person? Are you yelling into the mic 1 cm away from it? Is it fine if you leave it off speaker but move the device further away?

Hi,
I have same issues with my phone. I have tried with both EU and international roms.
If someone have a solution I take it :good:
Similar issues here.
It's actually my biggest complaint with this device. Being on a Canadian carrier and thus not having VoLTE or WiFi probably isn't helping either.

I disabled VOLTE and Wifi and this seems to improve quality a little bit.

Sorry for the long delay......
- Yes, directly into the mic
- Not noisy on both sides, tested this today again with my son in our house. It was quiet
- Not yelling, just normal volume.
- Doesn't change when moving the phone away
To add, it seems that calling with WhatsApp voice is a little better and voice call through DUO is really good. Don't understand this.
