Battery drain - Samsung Infuse 4G

Why does my display use so much battery even when on the lowest setting? I have horrible battery life running cm10 with UCKI3 with no overclocking and I'm using 35% zram and conservative governer. I'm draining about 10% per hour with no use (yes, it does go into deep sleep) and about 20% per hour with use. When I am using the phone lightly none of my good quality chargers can keep up with the phone and the phone actually slowly loses battery when plugged into the charger and I am using it. When the phone is in deep sleep the charger charges it very slowly.
I appreciate your help.

Stop looking at your display?

Hard to tell without more info really. What was your screen on time? Any apps running in the background? Have you used an app like better battery stats to see if there are apps causing lots of wakelocks?
The display will always use the most amount of power, even on low brightness. So if you are using your phone a lot 20% an hour doesn't seem that ridiculous, at least compared to what kind of battery life I get with constant usage.

But if I just do light browsing it's 20% per hour. I'm using autokill task managers and a limit of 1 background process in the settings. There are no apps causing lots of wake locks.

battery?
could be the battery?

I generally avoid task-killers. They tend to actually use more CPU to autokill apps that might not actually be doing anything in the background.

I would get rid of task killers also. After ginger bread there pretty useless. I am seconding the bad battery suggestion. I am on Scotts cm10 also and battery is pretty good. And its my original battery from almost 2 years ago now. Also I'm not very nice to my phone phone when it comes to charge cycles.

I think the fact that you have 10% per hour usage while sleeping is more significant than 20% per hour with screen on (because you may be doing other things with screen on).
Have you tried Better Battery Stats to see if there are some programs keeping wakelocks.
Also maybe try turning off gps and internet connection to see if that makes a difference in screen off usage.

I would suggest a full wipe and re install as posted previously hard to tell with the info you have provided.

Crazy battery life
I attached a photo of my battery drain. It's hard for my battery to die since the 11/04 build came out. What I have been doing is shutting off data and wifi when not in use and I managed to get well over a day's worth of use.

I get 2 days of regular use and over 3 days with little usage on my 1800mAh battery, you should get LOADS more on yours, 4 days at a minimum.
Charge up to 100%, let it rest on charger for 2 more hours.
Go to recovery and wipe battery stats.
Use the device as normal but do not charge until it dies at 0%.
Charge to 100% and again let it rest a bit, then resume your normal usage.
Every once in a while or after flashing a new ROM, let it discharge to 0 to get accurate readings.
And also be aware that google GPS-based apps have problems on CM7 based ROMs and the GPS sometimes stays awake or some such bug. It doesn't show on battery usage graph but every time you use google maps, google goggles or similar I recommend rebooting because there's a chance it's slowly draining your battery in the background.

Just a thought: Do you really use google maps so much that it can account for 22% of energy consumption on a 3.6k mah battery? That seems kind of excessive to me.
I mention this since I used to have problems with google maps starting on its own in the background and it really drained the battery like crazy. (oddly enough it would only start whenever i opened the stock mail client.)
The latest google maps does not run in the back ground even after exiting like previous versions of maps (you would have to either reboot the phone or use a 3rd party app to manually kill everything related to maps).
So my recommendation is to do what the above said with the calibration and then make sure you are on the latest maps.

A lot of people give the advice to drain the battery until it dies. Very poor advice, and you can kill the battery that way. Just drain to 20% or so. No need to go any lower, its not going to make the battery meter any more accurate.

Addtional battery Management on Custom ROMS

I realize this may be sacrilege to some, but is there any advantage to installing a battery management app like Juicedefender to a custom ROM? Or is each ROM optimized enough to not need third party apps like this... I just installed the ICS 2.3.5...
If not, are there custom kernels that can be flashed to this ROM to optimize battery more?
Thanks.
Actually, there is EVERY advantage of installing JD on any rom. JD does things no roms can do, like enable/disable connectivity such as wifi, gps, bluetooth depending on variable you chose such as location, time of day....
I use JD ultimate and this is what i usually get...JD is probably the best battery manager out there, you can couple it wil SetCPU to additionally tweak it.
On this screen is my usage for tha past day, i have 25% left and i've already have 26 hours on my battery. JD is set to keep wifi on at all time when im home. Imagine how much more i could gain if it only enabled wifi every half hour to sync my stuff.
Also take into consideration i've been uploading all my pictures to dropbox for the past 1.5 hours. When i woke up 2 hours ago, i have 43% remaining. So dropbox drained 20% in 1.5 hours

I dont understand how you can "not see the point". Even a save of 10%-15% gives you at least a couple more hours of up time...we all know there is no magical solution for such a hungry, battery guzzling phone, but why not make the best out of it and control what we can?
I guess I do see the point. Maybe I just don't care that much. It makes sense to try to maximize battery life, so maybe I will try it out. I don't care much for the idea of turning off data when the screen is off with manual sync times though.
buy a extra battery. or a car charger. juice defender and under volting will help but not much. just turn screen down your self and turn wifi off which leave house. i tried most bat apps there are. i don't use any now and get better life then most people. been work eight hours and I'm at eighty four percent still. that's with use lol. jd uses more then it saves

I'm sure they sell it elsewhere but it is all over ebay and I was tempted:
3800mAh Extended Battery + Cover
I love my slim form so I may just get like a battery 3 pack and always keep a couple charged in the fridge or something... when I go out for a while it can easily fit in a back pocket or bag for emergency.

Battery Life All Over The Place?

Hey guys,
So its been about 3 week since I've had the SG3 and I love it, everything except the battery life.
My battery life varies alot day from day which is really weird.
I have LTE on (but i'm either at the office or home, so wifi is usually connected instead), background sync on, GPS off, Bluetooth off,NFC off, about 25% brightness and power saver mode on at all times.
Somehow it seems that when in standby and not in use it drains more battery than when in use and using LTE instead of WiFi.
For example today, full charge since 8am, and I'm at 38%..(It's only 3:30). This is being on WiFi for 90% of that time and only occasionally texting and checking twitter/facebook/email.
Your experiences?
My GS3 gets great battery life (well, at least compared to my old D2G lol...). 5 hours and 20minutes off the charger, and I'm at 65%. But mind you, my screen has been on for nearly two hours of that, and I've been on the internet/in a call for 30mins of that, and texting for the remainder. People seem to be getting mixed results as far as battery, it's just one of those quirks. There's actually already a thread going about battery life.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776580
My battery life was pretty awesome. I can get through a whole day with no issues
But when I am at work and tethering, definitely leave it plugged in.
Just flashed beans rom v3 and my battery life took a hit.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Hmm interesting.
The screens only been on for 54 minutes of the 8 hours 11 minutes the phones been off the charger.
For some reason when I'm about and using LTE and constantly calling/txting/tweeting and what not I have better battery life than sitting at home or at the office on wifi and using the phone less.
Yeah my battery life is also very inconsistent. Just sitting at home on my desk it will sometimes drop only a few 3% over several hours and sometimes it will drop 35%. I haven't been able to figure out any contributing factors yet. I do get terrible cell reception at home but I keep it on wifi, and the above examples are when the phone is sitting in the same place.
consistantly 20 hours with 4 hours screen time on and usually with still 25-30% battery left. Always on 4G never on wifi. Never have battery saver on.
Only thing I do have is a setcpu profile for screen off that severely limits the cpu.

I have only had my S3 for 2 weeks, but I have been able to easily get a full day out of the battery. I typically have about 1 hour talk time, 2-3 hours wifi and maybe an hour of 4G web surfing.
I do have the battery saver mode on (not sure how much of a difference it makes) and I generally don't charge during the day.
Mine is also very inconsistent. When it is just in my pocket it lasts a really long time 12-18 hours, but if I'm doing something simple like listening to music with the screen off, from the sd card it dies in half that time.
When I'm home and connected to WiFi I have been turning off mobile data. Whenever I wake my phone up from sleep it notifies me at the bottom of the screen "connected to my wifi network". So I don't know if the WiFi goes off in sleep mode, if that's the case then it normally would be connecting in and out of 3g/4g hadn't I turned off mobile data.
I've also been very religious about fully closing apps instead of just hitting the home button. Also using task manager to clear out running processes and ram
Both of these seemed to help out tremendously

you are probably a heavy user. I charge my phone (on average) every 2 days.
Not sure what ROM or kernel you're running, but I'm running the latest "Team Acid" version of AOKP with latest kernel it comes with and I have no problems with my battery. Of course I that's just with normal use (texting, calling, viewing xda via app, gtalk and some web browsing). My battery usually still has any where between 30% and 50% by night time when i place on my dock for the night to charge. Time of use is from 5 am to about 9 pm.
The way I use my phone, I was lucky to get through from 6 A.M. to 6 P.M. without having to charge with GB and the AntonX kernel. My life was comparable using the stock TeamAcid AOKP ICS ROM and kernel. Undervolting an additional 75 mV, allowing overclocking to 1200 MHz, and using the smartassv2 governor I seem to be able to get through the day, but definitely need to plug in in the evening if I didn't charge during the day.
The biggest run-time improvement for me was a new battery. Even the 1500 mAh Samsung battery I got as a spare was significantly better than my 18-month-old 1650 mAh Samsung that came with my phone.
Better Battery Stats is an indispensable app for gathering information in understanding why your battery life may not be as good as it could be. Looking at the ICS monitor of data usage (or My Data Manager, which will run on GB as well) can provide good insights as well. By watching the output of those, removing/freezing some apps that I don't need that wakelock the phone, setting "quiet hours," turning off WiFI at night, and not dropping to "2G/GSM" for background data transfer, I am typically around 90% charge after ~8 hours of "really idle" overnight. It is a couple percent lower if it is a night that Titanium Backup runs a scheduled backup.
I would get around 15 hours of fairly heavy use. I was running barebones with antonx oc/uv kernel I was undervolted and using the 2300 mah battery
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
My battery life is unrealistic. This is most the reason I post roms and share them with you. I cannot gauge how well a rom will behave until more "use cases" exercise the phone's abilities.
For one, I don't have t-mobile anymore, so the RIL doesn't behave the way it does on your phone (when you are on t-mobile), because I only get edge. I don't use this phone as my daily driver, so I don't pack the phone up with a bunch of applications or multimedia (videos, mp3s, etc...).
With that my phone gets really great battery life.
Right now my 'herring r7' rom (to be released soon) has me at 3h 16m on battery @ 97%. I'm sure the time will continue to go up and battery usage will slowly decay. I really won't know how it will act until I release it and wait for you guys to respond.
I hope that gives you a little view into why I can't always gauge how a rom is going to act and why it is so important that I get feedback.
Thanks guys bug I'm running the latest Team Acid CM9 with Hefe's kernel and battery life is just terrible, my battery lasts about 4 hrs at 96%. Not sure if its my battery that needs replacing but anyone have suggestions on improving battery life?

I got "better battery stats" from the market.
The developer has a thread somewhere here on xda.
It is a great tool for figuring out what is running so often that is eating your battery.
With that, I've found that doing a factory reset, wiping everything (including my sdcard, after backing it up... of course), makes sure nothing residual is around to make applications go wacky. I don't use TB or any other tools to restore backed up apps. I either do it manually with adb or just reinstall stuff from the market. I never restore data.
Where can I find your new rom when its ready

Battery life means nothing without listing display time. My SGS4G is currently at 5 days. However when I actually used it as my daily phone I would get about 4 hours display over the course of a normal day. 3½ display time if I used it for much gaming or YouTube streaming.

4 hours
It all depends. Playing HD youtube over 4G with brightness turned up full and checking email every 2 mins, etc is going to kill it a lot faster than data/wifi turned off, screen at the lowest brightness and sitting in your pocket without the screen on. There is no test benchmark to test ROM's for this, because even things like how far you are away from the router, if you're connected B/G/N could all effect the battery life, so it's hard to get a standard test. Here is an average day for me though.
This is Remics, no real tweaks, smartass2 governor running. Few hours of music, pedometer tracking in the background to track walking for an hour or so, bit of surfing, instagram pic taking and uploading, editing for an 30 mins oror so, installed 3 other camera last night and rebooting and playing around, lots of suduko, hour or so of youtube, lots of txting, ummm, tested a wifi calling apps that worked good for about 30mins, I can't remember what else over the past 26hours and still 26% left.

part of me wonders if LG knew this so that's why they are offering an extra battery promotion.
First cycle. I have been having mixed usage. Auto brightness LTE only. I'm at 5 hrs 25 SOT. I'm pretty happy with battery life. Phone is great so far. Way better than my old G4.
Once I get my second battery it will be more than adequate for my needs. I travel a lot for work so I'll report back how the phone does while in the air.

This is day 4 with my g5. Everything is running fine except for my battery life. Here's some screen shots of what mine is doing. As you see I don't have a lot of time with total battery usage before I have to charge it again. Screen is the top usage but my battery life is poor. I don't know how to fix it. I could disable a ton of services but then what would be the use of me having this phone if I have to cripple it? It's sad.

I wish. Then I would have a reason for the bad battery life. The only intensive thing that I have been doing is Snapchat and Facebook and YouTube videos and ESPN videos.
First weekend, Bluetooth on all day connected to me zenwatch 2.

So I'm not the only one with really high "phone idle". Haven't been able to track that one down. I even disabled the Always-On screen just in case it was related.
I also get significant (like half the battery in 7hrs) drain from Google Maps. I left my phone unplugged over night and it ate through the battery at some point. Second time it's popped up.
