I have read so many threads with problem x solved by using a quality USB cable, and yet I still find others arguing that there is no difference in cheap cables. In-fact i have just had a discussion about this with a friend yesterday so i thought i would just let everyone know - USE A GOOD CABLE!
To test this I used an ebay cable, oem samsung, oem moto, and a case logic cable. I then simply transferred a small 6 mb file and a larger 200mb file to the phone.
Ebay - phone wouldn't even connect to pc.
Sam - both worked
Moto - both worked
Case - 6 mb worked, 200 started and then completely froze forcing phone reboot.
So again, especially when flashing, use a good cable!
Good to know. Thanks
Just another heads up... My wife has a Motorola and I have the siii. Using my siii cable, both of our phones charge at least three times faster. Using the Motorola cable, both of our phones charge much slower.
Another heads up... Get the best of both worlds, high quality and low price on a usb cable. Go to monoprice.com!

Most Likely those talking about difference in Cables could be talking about how each manufacture alters their cable.
For example, Moto and Samsung have a Resister that links 2 of the 5 pins which is hidden in the plastic. Reason for this is, Car docks, it would tell phone to open car dock App etc, Same for media docks.
Charger usb cables are same because some phones can handle a higher amp of charging which charges faster while a standard usb cable needs to made to have a limit to not fry the device it is being used on.
Hope This helps, i know it did when I learned this,. Now it makes more reasons and ideas for Mods...LOL

If you're using a charger for a different device, it's likely that they have different amperage. A 2 amp charger will charge your phone a LOT faster than, say, the 0.5 amps off your computer's USB port. In this case, it's not the USB cable itself, but the amperage of the transformer in the charger. Some may argue that the slower charge is "better" and will help your battery last longer.
If you're using the same charger with different USB cables, then this is news.
I haven't even used the OEM cable that came with my GSIII. I picked up a 6 foot no name USB cable from newegg for $1.39 and it works fine.

Was going to point this exact thing out. It is also possible the cables could be rated for passing different rates but it is much more likely that something is putting off more power so it charges faster. I do tend to agree though that slower is better since you can pull the plug faster and not overcharge
Over time I end up having loose connection problems with virtually any microusb cable i buy, including from monoprice. At first the cable plugs into the phone fine and charges. Overtime somehow the microusb part that goes in the phone is looser in the phone than before, and i have to angle my phone in way to get it to start charging. The slightest movement causes the charging to stop. I have had this problem with almost every micro usb cable i ever owned ever since I got an htc thunderbolt and the problem continues now with my s3.

going to mono price. I'll report the results.
One thing to keep in mind also is that most, if not all, USB cables aren't shielded so the longer they are they degrade the transfer speeds etc. I don't think it would make a difference for charging, but to transfer data a shorter higher quality cable would be your best bet. I don't know if the degradation would be noticeable tho...

When you say the transfer started and then froze, I would have to ask what ROM you're running. If it's TW or TW-based, I'd be much more willing to blame the software than the cable. Using Samsung's MTP interface, I have had plenty of large file transfers crap out using both high and low quality cables.
Either way, this test is hardly complete. Obviously somethings wrong with the Ebay cable, but for the other tests, you need to run them more than once. To give any statistical significance to the data, the tests have to be run a bunch of times. Otherwise it is (as far as you know) just luck.
Also, as others have said, I think the primary differences between cheap and "quality" usb cables are
Amperage (which is mostly due to the charger, not the cable, but generally you want a cable that can handle it)
Quality of the connector (cheap cables generally have flimsy connectors)
Quality of construction/Durability (may work fine, but die after a month or two).
I don't think data transfer is something that is really impacted much by the quality of the cable (until you hit that point where the cheap cable just stops working). Getting back to my earlier point about the limited testing, I think if you ran the same test a whole bunch of times (like 100 times for each file on each cable), you'd find that as long as the cable actually works (which seems to exclude the ebay one), they'd probably perform about the same on average.
Just my two cents.

Will this be compatible with the HTC Desire HD?
I could swear someone I've met before - who has a Desire - has got a short HTC marked usb cable - does anyone know anything about that?
Thanks
As long as it's a USB to Micro USB cable any will do fine no matter brand.

It should be. Any standard USB cable should do.
try something like this :
www.dicksmith.com.au/product/E6201/milkshake-retractable-cable-usb-to-mini-micro
you can find these cables on ebay.
works well and also does mini usb. be careful some usb to micro usb cables are for charging only and do not have the data lines connected.
Yeah. I've always been amazed by vendor branded usb cables - nokia is guilty too, they try to give the impression that their ones are different but any compliant usb cable will work.
I've just ordered a couple of Micro to Mini USB adapters. I have loads of Mini USB leads at home but only 1 micro USB which is the one that came with the phone.
be careful with those mini to micro usb adapters as a lot of them do not have the data lines connected so they are only useful for charging.
I have a short Nokia CA-101D cable that came with a 5800. Works fine with Samsung i8910, HTC Desire and Desire HD (from my experience) for both data and power.
Cable is 20cm long and can be bought for less than £2 from various places including Amazon and Ebay.
Hope this helps. John

Errrm, no. Mine charges just fine from the USB port on the pc and laptop.
Yeah, can draw up to 500mA from a standard usb port.
lol damn i got a crappy usb connection then! I say there watching 60% for over an hour so I was left thinking it didn't charge, only transferred data!
IMO USB charges should be avoided, it should be possible to turn off charging.
While it is not exactly harmful to the battery like it used to be, I have the pretty strong feeling that low-ampere charges suck. Try it your self one day, after your battery is fully conditioned. Go down to like 40% of charge and then leave it at some USB port overnight. Then watch how quickly the power drains the next day. Then compare that to a charge from 40% to full on a high ampere (1000-1200mah) connections like the mains charger or a good car charger.
The charge seems to last longer. I have noticed this with multiple USB-charging devices now and I think it has to do with the amperage / time of the charger. The lower it is, the longer the charge takes the shallower the carged battery is.
That was the feeling I had too psychotic, but when I claimed this at a different forum I was laughed at and told that a full charge is a full charge except that a USB-charge takes longer... Do you have anything to back it up?
If looking to charge in the car...
... then aren't there specific USB cables where a couple of the pins are shorted or something so that the car panel opens? Seen a thread on this site, but can't find it right now!

Actually I read somewhere that a computer slow charge actually gives you slightly more capacity. Can't remember where though! makes sense since fast charges usually get a bit lower capacity.

I think that's the case. Slow charging via USB also doesn't heat the battery up so much, so is kinder to it.

I disagree - you can get cheap non-OEM cables, but you need to know where to look.
eBay/direct-from-China is usually not a good bet.
Reputable domestic vendors (even if their product is probably from China) are usually a safe bet. People over at AVSForum swear by Monoprice for HDMI cables, and I have had great results with their USB cables.
The only thing that has been a disappointment from Monoprice for me are their car charging adapters.

I second this. The OEM cables probably come from China as well. It's not a matter of brand, it's a matter of quality. If you buy from a shady source such as some guy on eBay, you are most likely going to get cables that are of a quality compatible to some shady guy selling stuff on eBay.
Buying from reputable second hand sources, or from non-OEM manufacturers who have a proven track record is perfectly acceptable and in most cases completely fine.

Any other HDMI cable would've done the same thing. There's nothing active in an HDMI cable - it either fails to pass data or it works. If something fried, there was a groundloop or ESD event that would've happened with a cable from any other manufacturer.
always OEM

Very true for me. Even OEM Motorolla charging USB cable will fail 2 out of 3 times to charge Infuse. I have to wiggle it a little bit untill it'll start charging. I'm not sure it's cable fault though since I used a bunch of other phones before with micro-USB cables and only Infuse shows as very picky about plug.

True, but then again you rely on the cord when using odin or putting files to flash if you dont hassle with taking out the sd card. Yeah so you entitle youself to maybe ruining your phone by doing things to it. Still would you risk it on cheap usb cords? So Potential to ruin your phone remains at hand of the usb cord, phone being a life purchase for some. Thanks for this link. Bought two of these just a few minutes ago. Lost my original charger, might really still be here somewhere as I can't remember the last time I saw it. I also got the 4 port usb wall charger 2.1A... I hope they work well. My husband has a usb wall charger for his Samsung dumbphone that I am using now, it has been 6 hours and my phone is still not fully charged (extended battery). Sucks to wait 4 days but if it will charge like the original one it is worth every penny.
:good:
For USB chargers that are capable of putting out >1 Amp of power when connected using a standard USB cable, the phone only allows itself to be charged at the slower USB charging rate of less than ½ Amp, that in many instances cannot keep up with the current demands of in-car navigation.
There are usb cables that are designed for charging only. (search amazon for Naztech-Micro-USB-Charging-Cable) It shorts the two data connections together (rendering them useless for data), so the phone only sees it as a power connection, and will accept the higher current of the charging source.
Many of you are probably familiar with the USB cable hack that I believe started in the galaxy s forums but I believe it also works for us also. The main idea is that when we are connected to our laptops via USB we are limited to a very low current to charge our phones. This hack involves shorting I believe are the data transfer lines in the short male and female extension cord so that the laptop will not recognize the phone as a data transfer. You guys can search around for the thread but if you need it I will provide it. Below is a snapshot of my cables and charge rate of USB plugged in and ac charge from the laptop.
I do feel the quality of the cable does matter also. Below is a generic htc cord from dealextreme and a mediabridge cord from amazon. The mediabridge cord provided a charge of at least 700mA connected to the shorted extension cord while the generic HTC cord provided a number of about 200mA. Also provided in the pictures is where you see in battery monitor widget a number of about 400mA. That is the mediabridge cord connected straight to the laptop.
These are my findings. Mods or anyone, if you find that this is not legit enough of a post, then go ahead and remove it. I did not provide any instructions to do this, just my findings.
Feel free to correct me and refute my findings. This could all be a placebo.

Well, I wouldn't be so sure the DX cord is legit.. Cord length and quality means a lot, also not every laptop.can.produce enough juice anyway.
I would have checked each with a power socket usb, of 1A 5V output. Again, would not trust DX on that one
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda premium
For sure. This is reference to those who are still iffy about buying things from DX or some sellers from ebay who may sell things like these. Mostly a recommendation to just stick with oem cords or more higher end cords with a higher guage and quality.
Yes, true not all laptops can produce all that juice, but for those who do have the laptop that can, this is a good temporary method for those times where you haven't received your good oem adaptor yet. I'm actually waiting for mine in the mail since I gave all mine to my sisters. :] Because of that, I decided to try this method. And lucky me it works just fine!
In the six months I've had this phone, I've gone through about 4 USB cables! The first couple lasted about 1-2 months but this last cable only lasted a few weeks! Something with this phone is just rendering them inoperable. Anyone else going through charging cables like crazy with this device?
Had mine for a little over a month and have not had any issues with cables. But I'm also extremely careful in how I handle things I own. Not saying you don't, but I feel as though I go the extra mile when it comes to care.
Are you possibly using the fast charging adapter that came with the phone and a cable that isn't capable of handling the 2.4 amps that go through it? I could see that killing a few USB cables.
We go through a lot of cables at our house with an S7, an S6, a tablet, and a Kobo. However, that's due to having a toddler and a pre-schooler that both like to chew on them. We've gone through almost 20 cables in the past 5 years.
Upstairs, though, we've been using the same cables for the S7 and S6 that we previously used with Note4 and a G2, so they're pushing a year or two in age.
What charger are you plugging them into?
Sent from my SM-G930W8 using Tapatalk
These are the two main types of cables I've tried so far, I don't see anywhere that they couldn't handle the 2.4 amps, but that doesn't mean they can't.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FSUT9QW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And I use them with the Samsung quick charge adapter. I need a cable with good length, so that's why I'm not using the one that came with the phone.

Thanks, I'll check these out when this 5 pack dies. Already lost one cable and have a feeling the second doesn't have much time left. So probably within a month or two at this rate!

Tbh I wouldn't have thought twice about it either, pretty obvious now thinking about it, but it wouldn't have crossed my mind that a normal USB cable couldn't handle the fast charge power draw
It happened to me too. Did you smell any burning?

Nope, no burning or other smells.
Welp, I tried the fast charging specific cables and the first one just died on me. It lasted much longer than the other ones, but that's not saying much as it lasted about only 6 weeks.
These are the cables I am using now. Still have two of them left, will continue to use until I'm on the last one and then buy more I guess. WTF
