I disagree - you can get cheap non-OEM cables, but you need to know where to look.
eBay/direct-from-China is usually not a good bet.
Reputable domestic vendors (even if their product is probably from China) are usually a safe bet. People over at AVSForum swear by Monoprice for HDMI cables, and I have had great results with their USB cables.
The only thing that has been a disappointment from Monoprice for me are their car charging adapters.

I second this. The OEM cables probably come from China as well. It's not a matter of brand, it's a matter of quality. If you buy from a shady source such as some guy on eBay, you are most likely going to get cables that are of a quality compatible to some shady guy selling stuff on eBay.
Buying from reputable second hand sources, or from non-OEM manufacturers who have a proven track record is perfectly acceptable and in most cases completely fine.
There were several people in the G2x forums who fried their phone using HDMI cables from monoprice.

Any other HDMI cable would've done the same thing. There's nothing active in an HDMI cable - it either fails to pass data or it works. If something fried, there was a groundloop or ESD event that would've happened with a cable from any other manufacturer.
always OEM

Very true for me. Even OEM Motorolla charging USB cable will fail 2 out of 3 times to charge Infuse. I have to wiggle it a little bit untill it'll start charging. I'm not sure it's cable fault though since I used a bunch of other phones before with micro-USB cables and only Infuse shows as very picky about plug.

I was running around my house the other day trying to find an extra microUSB cable, when I decided I should just order a couple extra (from www.monoprice.com) to keep around the house...I ended up getting:
2x1.5ft
2x3ft
2x6ft
1x10ft
...all for $9.60 shipped! They seem like high quality cables, and definitely cost a lot less than any brick-and-mortar store!
If you haven't ordered from MonoPrice before, I highly recommend them.

The power outlet next to my bed is a couple feet away, so now I can use my phone normally (i.e. not leaning towards the side of the bed) while it's charging. It also came in handy during a road trip last weekend; I was using my phone in the back seat while it was plugged into the charger in the center console.

Agree with this. I just bought a 6 foot charger for 6 bucks off of amazon. I wish I read this thread, I wanted to grab a really long charger for bedside charging. Data transfer speeds might be slow with that, but for charging. It should be working great!
Thanks

You are fine using odin and getting all your necessary files transferred to root and stuff? No problems? Is it durable? I know its my fault for wear on my cords since im a teenager and carry them in a bag all the time so they get messed up. True, but then again you rely on the cord when using odin or putting files to flash if you dont hassle with taking out the sd card. Yeah so you entitle youself to maybe ruining your phone by doing things to it. Still would you risk it on cheap usb cords? So Potential to ruin your phone remains at hand of the usb cord, phone being a life purchase for some. It truly isnt a life crisis for me, i just wanted to see what was out there and what people were using.

Thanks for this link. Bought two of these just a few minutes ago. Lost my original charger, might really still be here somewhere as I can't remember the last time I saw it. I also got the 4 port usb wall charger 2.1A... I hope they work well. My husband has a usb wall charger for his Samsung dumbphone that I am using now, it has been 6 hours and my phone is still not fully charged (extended battery). Sucks to wait 4 days but if it will charge like the original one it is worth every penny.
:good:
For USB chargers that are capable of putting out >1 Amp of power when connected using a standard USB cable, the phone only allows itself to be charged at the slower USB charging rate of less than ½ Amp, that in many instances cannot keep up with the current demands of in-car navigation.
There are usb cables that are designed for charging only. (search amazon for Naztech-Micro-USB-Charging-Cable) It shorts the two data connections together (rendering them useless for data), so the phone only sees it as a power connection, and will accept the higher current of the charging source.
I have read so many threads with problem x solved by using a quality USB cable, and yet I still find others arguing that there is no difference in cheap cables. In-fact i have just had a discussion about this with a friend yesterday so i thought i would just let everyone know - USE A GOOD CABLE!
To test this I used an ebay cable, oem samsung, oem moto, and a case logic cable. I then simply transferred a small 6 mb file and a larger 200mb file to the phone.
Ebay - phone wouldn't even connect to pc.
Sam - both worked
Moto - both worked
Case - 6 mb worked, 200 started and then completely froze forcing phone reboot.
So again, especially when flashing, use a good cable!
Good to know. Thanks
Just another heads up... My wife has a Motorola and I have the siii. Using my siii cable, both of our phones charge at least three times faster. Using the Motorola cable, both of our phones charge much slower.
Another heads up... Get the best of both worlds, high quality and low price on a usb cable. Go to monoprice.com!

Most Likely those talking about difference in Cables could be talking about how each manufacture alters their cable.
For example, Moto and Samsung have a Resister that links 2 of the 5 pins which is hidden in the plastic. Reason for this is, Car docks, it would tell phone to open car dock App etc, Same for media docks.
Charger usb cables are same because some phones can handle a higher amp of charging which charges faster while a standard usb cable needs to made to have a limit to not fry the device it is being used on.
Hope This helps, i know it did when I learned this,. Now it makes more reasons and ideas for Mods...LOL

If you're using a charger for a different device, it's likely that they have different amperage. A 2 amp charger will charge your phone a LOT faster than, say, the 0.5 amps off your computer's USB port. In this case, it's not the USB cable itself, but the amperage of the transformer in the charger. Some may argue that the slower charge is "better" and will help your battery last longer.
If you're using the same charger with different USB cables, then this is news.
I haven't even used the OEM cable that came with my GSIII. I picked up a 6 foot no name USB cable from newegg for $1.39 and it works fine.

Was going to point this exact thing out. It is also possible the cables could be rated for passing different rates but it is much more likely that something is putting off more power so it charges faster. I do tend to agree though that slower is better since you can pull the plug faster and not overcharge
Over time I end up having loose connection problems with virtually any microusb cable i buy, including from monoprice. At first the cable plugs into the phone fine and charges. Overtime somehow the microusb part that goes in the phone is looser in the phone than before, and i have to angle my phone in way to get it to start charging. The slightest movement causes the charging to stop. I have had this problem with almost every micro usb cable i ever owned ever since I got an htc thunderbolt and the problem continues now with my s3.

going to mono price. I'll report the results.
One thing to keep in mind also is that most, if not all, USB cables aren't shielded so the longer they are they degrade the transfer speeds etc. I don't think it would make a difference for charging, but to transfer data a shorter higher quality cable would be your best bet. I don't know if the degradation would be noticeable tho...

When you say the transfer started and then froze, I would have to ask what ROM you're running. If it's TW or TW-based, I'd be much more willing to blame the software than the cable. Using Samsung's MTP interface, I have had plenty of large file transfers crap out using both high and low quality cables.
Either way, this test is hardly complete. Obviously somethings wrong with the Ebay cable, but for the other tests, you need to run them more than once. To give any statistical significance to the data, the tests have to be run a bunch of times. Otherwise it is (as far as you know) just luck.
Also, as others have said, I think the primary differences between cheap and "quality" usb cables are
Amperage (which is mostly due to the charger, not the cable, but generally you want a cable that can handle it)
Quality of the connector (cheap cables generally have flimsy connectors)
Quality of construction/Durability (may work fine, but die after a month or two).
I don't think data transfer is something that is really impacted much by the quality of the cable (until you hit that point where the cheap cable just stops working). Getting back to my earlier point about the limited testing, I think if you ran the same test a whole bunch of times (like 100 times for each file on each cable), you'd find that as long as the cable actually works (which seems to exclude the ebay one), they'd probably perform about the same on average.
Just my two cents.
Has anyone found a spot to buy them? The ones on the Samsung site look different. And I want to make sure the end fits inside my case because the hole is designed for the cable that comes with the phone. I don't want to get into cutting the case or cable ends.

I used to think the same thing, but this is absolutely not true. You can download the app Galaxy Charging Current and compare your charging rates with different cables. If you don't believe the app, you can start from a specific charge level and time the charge with the screen off and no apps running. There can be a significant difference. There are several posts throughout the GS4 forums if you search for the app name.
This isn't only true for the GS4 either. I tried using a USB 2.0 extension cable I bought in 03 or 04 to extend my Palm Pre touchstone, but the phone wouldn't consistently charge with the extension in place.
How's the charging speed on those? I know some cheaper cables don't charge as quickly.

Both.
What is strange to me the phone with that app reports it's getting 1900mA when I use an old HTC charger capable of 1A (1000mA) @ 5V when using the OEM USB cable. Either that HTC charger's specs were grossly understated or the phone itself tries to sense electrical properties of the USB cable? Not sure if that last bit is even possible.
Anyone with knowledge on how the phone determines how much current to draw on a lower level? Kinda curious.
Also, there are sellers on eBay for the original S4 charging cable for something like $7, or same charging cable and 2A wall adapter for $10.
See for example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/230980370756
The part number they list (ETA-U90JWE) is the same as my OEM charger, that can do 2A @ 5 V.

Also looking for a 1900mA charger/usb chord combo. Found 2 "OEM" fakes on Amazon (reviews reported fake), and can't just buy, and hope for the best on eBay. Looking to see if someone has bought, tried, and tested a charger/chord combo that does 1900mA from a reliable source. I'm not paying $40+ for a charger/usb chord from samsung. There's got to be an alternative.
Newegg.com sells them.
I've ordered this charger + cable (aware of the risk of fake, will be comparing to my included/OEM), this micro USB cable, and this micro USB cable.
Also waiting on this car charger.

Bought that one from seller1on1. Came in today. Cable is shorter than OEM but has the same current

FYI regarding my post above, I've started a separate thread since this one has gone a bit off-topic. Sorry OP!

Hi !
I broke my usb cable so I can't charge my phone anymore...
I looked online but I can't find an "official" usb cord. I know that if you don't use the right one, things like ODIN may fail...
Does anyone know a good USB cord reference for the vzw s4 ?
Thanks !
Any micro USB cord should work. I've used the original and many cheap ones without problems.

It may charge but not connect to the computer i have had this issue in the past with other phones.
Generally any official or name brand cords should work it doesn't have to be the Samsung one, I'm still using my Blackberry branded cords without issue, if you are really worried i would recommend getting the cable from a major online retailer like newegg or Ncix or Canada Computers (if you are in Canada)

Not "any" micro USB cord would deliver the full 1900 mA that the stock S4 charger provides. It works but it will charge slower.
I've tested a bunch of cables and found that the iFrogz is the most reliable. It is capable of delivering 1900 mA or higher (when used with Nexus 7, etc). On top of it, the plug is slim, so it will work with thick cases or those with small cutout.
The pink ones can be found on eBay for $3.50. Other colors can be found on Amazon for $6. I like them non-black so I can find it easy among all the cables.
Hope this helps.

I have been using my first usb cord... think it came with my og droid with no issues
I have a couple of Nokia USB cables that are very reliable for both data and charging.
I have several monoprice usb cords. They all work fine and charge as fast as the oem cord.
Majority of the cords on ebay claim they sell the oem cable, they are like 1 to 1 copy, they are not OEM, but they do offer reasonable quality and speed, and do offer data transfer at a low cost compare to the actual OEM one's.
