From ATRIX to ATRIX 2 - your thoughts please... - Motorola Atrix 2

I am thinking of moving from ATRIX 4G to ATRIX 2 mostly because of ICS release for ATRIX 2.
I am getting an used, locked and unrooted US AT&T ATRIX 2 with GB soft on it.
What are your thoughts?
1. Which Motorola software to put on? Leak or the official release? Should I flash or do OTA?
2. What path should I follow to bring ICS to ATRIX 2? Coming from ATRIX I know the dangers of bricking.
3. What can I expect once on ICS? Any major bugs/ issues?
4. How is battery life on ICS?
5. When acquiring the phone what should I check for to make sure it is in mint condition?
6. Lastly. If you already followed the smell path, moving from ATRIX 4G to ATRIX 2, would you do it again or recommend it?
Any tips / help will be appreciated, please focus on the questions I asked above, though.
I am not considering any other phone at this point but either ATRIX 2 w/ ICS or I will stay on ATRIX 4G with CM7.2 for the time being.
Thank you so much.

Why don't you go straight for the nexus 4?

Well, honestly I would not recommend it, since we are having a horrid time unlocking the bootloader on this phone. That means no kernels, or a lot of roms.
I would go for a nexus or the SGS 3, I have the SGS 3 and I can't say enough good things about it, and the ROMs, wow there are way too many for it, and I have been running CM10 on it since July, and even google wallet with NFC working on it.
I would assume the nexus devices are pretty much the same, especially since the SGS 3 was basically the last nexus phone, and then some.
Although the latest nexus 4 is an LG device, I would guess that it is still pretty much the same as previous nexus devices with the development on it.
Now to say a few good things about the A2, in that I happen to be one of the devs in here, and that we have a couple of versions of CM10 right now working with the stock kernel, and that really has kind of saved this phone from a slow and total death, in my opinion.

No. No no no no no no no. Without an unlocked bootloader, definitely no way. If you want ICS, use "The ROM" as it is know in the atrix community.

Have you used "the ROM"? That's the reason I want to jump ships. Now can you tell me how is OEM ICS on ATRIX 2? How about battery life? Any bugs?
Can anybody tell me anything that makes any sense? Please.

Get a nexus 4 and jump straight to jelly bean! Trust me without a unlocked boot loader the phone kinda sucks for tinkering with. But if you don't want to tinker with ROMs then its fine I guess

If you get the Atrix 2, I'd go with the leak from Jimbridgman here.
There aren't any bugs on the leak that would deter you from doing so. Battery life on ICS is better than GB for some, and for others its worse. This phone is "weird" in that aspect. But none the less, if you go with Leak1 from Jim, you can get a custom recovery such as bootstrap or bootmenu and flash any ICS ROM from there that you want, and you can also revert back to GB if you ever wanted by ONLY using Jim's method of doing so. If you OTA to ICS, you won't be able to revert back to GB.
All in all its a very good piece of hardware. But as everyone has said, the boot loader is locked, but it doesn't matter if you don't care to flash kernels or don't mind a fairly limited selection of ROMs.
Edit: almost forgot, when you receive the phone, make sure USB port works, make sure camera works, check to see that it's completely stock by matching the firmware on the phone with what Motorola says it should be. Also make sure sound works and WiFi and data. Other than that its all cosmetics that could determine the condition.

It's an Atrix 2 international or from AT&T? That means so much. Depends or which version you have, is the firm that you will install.
1: Official release, of course. 0 bugs.
2: We have the bootloader blocked, so, there aren't so many risk of hard brick. And, the only thing you will do is open rsdlite, open a .xml file. Plug in the phone, and hit Start. Nothing else.
3: I'm using ICS for more than 3 months or more. I don't know. And i detect 0 bugs. Except from the ICS Leak. Thats why i tell you to install the official release. (Retails)
And you can expect more battery performance, more phone performance. In GB we have 'dual-core 1Ghz each core'. In ICS we have 'Dual-core 1.2Ghz each core'. It comes overlocked from motorola official.
4: Perfect. I have a day playing games, music, internet (3G and wifi) and no need to be worried about the battery. The other day, in 18 hours, the batter drain only 50%.
5: I think nothing specific to check.
PS: From here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1934874) you will download the firmwares that i told you.
PS 2: Sorry for my poor english.

You cannot feed a race horse same amount of food as a donkey..low end phones (donkeys) will last a week without charging..but not a smartphone (race horse)..a smartphone is meant to be used not to be left on standby..and if you use it battery will drain..its the same with all smartphones..if anyone wants to use a smartphone heavily and dont like to charge it everyday then they should invent some sort of nuclear power source like in warships..those ships need to be fuelled only once in 10 or 20 years they say

Nah. Never tried "the ROM". Is it THAT bad?
Anyways, the official firmware is fine. Nothing special, nothing bad. Battery life is acceptable, use it heavily, it will not last a day, use it moderately, it probably can last you a day.
If I may add a few thoughts of mine, the reason I am no longer using my OG Atrix is that the Atrix 2 is good enough. The stock firmware has nothing special at all. "It just works" to quote a fruit. Also, the screen is much better. You will be surprised, if you have been using the Atrix all this while.

That's better, thanks. Since you used both, what are the main differences between ATRIX 1 and 2, both from software and hardware perspective.
Also, how is cm10 compared to OEM ICS?
What battery life can I expect on both?

[Q] Thinking of making the switch

I'm sure this has been asked before but I didn't see it so please be gentle lol. I currently own the Atrix and am on like 27 days. It is rooted and has a "ROM" on it with the webtop hack installed. I am starting to have a bitter taste in my mouth due to Motorola and their locked bootloaders. This is my first Android device and I am kind of let down I think because of it.
I had the Inspire for a brief period before all the ROMs were around and the thing that made me return the phone was the battery life and the low volume speaker. Have these things been addressed by roms and overclocking/underclocking and a speaker boost? I'd like to be able to enjoy the true Android experience and it seems that if I keep the Atrix I won't have that at all. I like the Atrix but it definately is being limited by the locked bootloader and the lack of developer support for it due to motorola being the way they are.
Thanks in advance guys!
Well designngears turned in his Atrix and now has an HTC Inspire so to me that's enough said lol. I have awesome battery life on the rom and kernel below and I'm over clocked at 1.5 Ghz . I have never owned an Atrix but I love my inspire and now that DG is here I'm highly excited

Well I haven't flashed any custom roms yet personally, but it appears that at least some of them do improve battery life to some degree, though battery life probably isn't going to be perfect no matter what you do.
How the phone is used really impacts battery life. The screen on the inspire seems to really be the battery-killer, from my experience.
As far as the sound, there's a least one fix, for the "tinny" issue, I'm not sure if it fixes the volume. I'm sure someone with more rom experience will likely chime in.
In any case, I'm on pretty close to day 27 as well, of my inspire, and I have absolutely no desire to switch to an atrix...
The thing is, as you can see by the proliferation of roms for the inspire, things are at least *possible* with this phone. That alone should be enough to convince you.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm "new" to Android its been about a month total using Android. Not sure what CM7 Nightlies means. I know CM7 is a ROM that puts Gingerbread on the device correct? But nightly does that imply you have to flash your phone every night with an update making you lose all your stuff? I think I'm going to make the switch. Going to flash the retail SBF back at lunch brining the phone back to stock and hopefully AT&T will allow me to switch since it hasn't been 30 days with the Atrix yet.
As far as the low volume, that is some thing that can be and is being fixed. Since our Devs. can fix this in the kernel, it shouldn't be that big of a problem. I am on a stock rooted rom with OC and a 20% bump in audio levels.
And no, with nightlies you don't have to do a full wipe. Just install it over the other rom using CWM and it should be good.

did you implement the boost for the external speaker only? or did you increase output for the in-call/earpiece volume as well. would appreciate a link to your kernel as well. i'm currently using the latest Desire S port for the Desire HD and the cm7-inspire-audiofix-r1.zip (to restore stock audio) and the speaker output is much louder compared to the stock Inspire ROM. in-call audio appears to be louder as well (although could be placebo). my standard is the audio boost incorporated on the Nexus 1 (post 65, post 71 and post 85); don't know if this is possible, but it made a huge difference.

[Q] a honest Atrix 2 review---solved!!

hey, I'm planning to buy Atrix 2 india. currently own a rooted HTC Legend running in 7.2 RC0
I would like to know (xda) opinion on this phone, things I'm looking for is
- phone overall built quality, voice, battery life?
- android developement with current ICS on this phone?
- any other issues ??
Thanks in advance
**************update**********
I got my hands on finally to new atrix 2, yes it started with this post
I think the battery life is great, I can go days without charging. The quality is good, feels nice, clear voice, great display.
There's supposed to be an official ICS build in the near future, as far as ports and whatnot, I think there are a few in the works right now, and even one that boots, but the locked bootloader prevents any real progress. (Not 100% about that fact, but I know the bootloader is locked, so flashing roms is a chore.)
I have no issues with my Atrix 2, so in my opinion, it's a pretty decent phone.
I think I'm cursed in the battery department because everyone else seems to have great performancecwhile mine is subpar. It isn't bad, I can get a full day out of it, but by the end I'm around ~20% power. I do use a lot of data, though.
The display is great and very bright, even at its dimmest setting. The OMAP 4 is very fast, and some people have been able to overclock it up to 1.3GHz.
The main problem people havevwith this phone is the locked bootloader which makes AOSP ROM's unworkable right now, and hinders development.
Overall, the community is great, and the phone itself has a lot of potential that we're only scratching the surface of and I love it.

I used the lazy 1-click in the dev section and works like a charm..
Just look for the thread titled, "Bugs found in Atrix 2." That will give you a general idea of the issues with this phone.
There's also some reported issues with certain class 10 micro-SD cards. Easily avoidable by not buying class 10, but it is there and a real problem that some folks are having. On the plus side of the SD card front though, the Atrix 2 has been reported to work with at least one of the new SDXC super high capacity cards. So that's a good thing.
Another problem, the new version of gingerbread that moto just released has no root exploit, so folks are working around that by downgrading to the older rom using the FXZ files, then rooting, doing and OTA root keeper mod and then doing the OTA update getting the latest official ROMs and keeping their root. It's still possible so it's not really a problem, it is just a lot more convoluted than before to get root.
There's also the custom ROMs that folks here are building. All that said, I really enjoy the phone, and it plays the 3D games that I've downloaded from the market with no issues. Performance seems plenty fast.

If you get this phone you will love it.
-Build quality is very nice, voice call quality is superb, and the battery life is great (especially if you're coming from an HTC phone)
-ICS is due for us in Q3. CM9 is in the works but it's stalled while we wait for a different phone with our same radio to get ICS or for Motorola to push early builds of ICS to their servers for us to intercept
-There is a thread in the general section containing a VERY large amount of issues with this phone. Most of the issues discussed there are NOT phone-wide. Probably the biggest issue I've seen with this phone is that it can be quirky with microSD cards. Many class 10 cards are not fully functional with the A2. Also in the first version of GB we couldn't put apps on the SD card. That has been kind of fixed in the latest GB update but it still is buggy. Contrary to what's said above, there IS a root exploit that will work on our latest version of GB. One thing that you might consider a problem is that its bootloader is locked... this means that we can't flash custom kernels or radios.
Awesome phone. Built well. Very good screen, very good sound, cam quality totally ok. Talking quality very good. Battery life is fine and so far everything is just working flawless here. You will like it. It is definitely one of the best handset you get for that price.

Hey Guys, I got my A2 today. The one problem is that the capacitive backlight does not turn on most of the time. Kind of comes on at its whim. Is it a known issue or shall I get a replacement?

Take your free hand and cup the top of the phone making sure to cover the front facing camera. I'm not sure where it is, but somewhere there is a sensor. The capacitor lights should light up in a normally lit room indoors with your hand covering the sensor. Take your hand off and the lights should turn off. This is how my phone behaves. At least that's one test you can run.

Not true. There is a root exploit for 2.3.6, the method u described was only needed the first few days following the release of the update.

Thanks. I've just discovered that the problem occurs only when the phone is charging on the mains.
A2 is very fast, beauty and WebTop is a very good ideia, Motoblur is sucks!
This phone, A2, is worlds more beautiful than the OGA. It even has the better, to me, GPU. Its slick and smooth with just enough lube......i mean, its awesome. Im a power user and average 18-22 hours between charges. They also took away that PenTile display. Ill hold on to my 150 brand new Craigslist phone till ICS this year.

It's only my second Android phone, but it's a beauty. Fast, no MotoBlur crap, all the bells and whistles you could ask for. Dropped a 32GB card in it and I'm happy. Some have had problems holding a wifi connection, but mine is solid. A keeper!

[Q] Neutrino or ROM similar to neutrino for atrix 2?

Hey all,
So basically the wifi/Bluetooth hardware has crapped out on this phone and since there's no Atrix 4g anymore they're sending me an Atrix 2 MB865 tomorrow.
Having tried a lot of different ROMs on the 4g my favorite by far is the NEUTRINO ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398819 ).
I was curious if anyone had also made the switch from the 4g to the 2 and if they can reccomend a comparable ROM. I'll probably have to try what's available and find out for myself, but any guidance is appreciated!
Thanks.

RebelRom or VictoryRom easy to install debloated, really responsive.
Supercharged V5, excellent Rom, bit more to install. Probably the best as well.
I use VictoryRom because I don't have the patience to install Supercharged.
Waiting for the release of RebelRom stable.
Well I am sure none of this helped!
Really you cannot go wrong with any of them, it's a matter of taste.
ATRIX 2 / Victory Rom
I would say VictoryRom is closest to that. Atrix 4G's bootloader is unlocked right? Atrix 2 is not. So there are workarounds that make installing ROMs a different process.
Sent via Tapatalk with VictoryRom_v1.1
Use victory Rom for simplicity and closest to stock
Rebel Rom for a bit tweaked and sony-like launcher
Supercharged Rom for heavy tweaking and slight theming
Blaze Rom for both heavy tweaking and heavy theming
But the rom you wanted is based off cyanogen mod, our bootloader is locked therefore our customizations are limited and cyanogen mod isn't available for the atrix 2 yet.
Thanks for the replies. It is going to be hard not having cyanogenmod...to the point where I may sell the phone and opt for an SGS II for the time being which I hate to say because I love my Atrix .
Are there still folks working on unlocking the bootloader? I read the project cheesecake thread but it seems it's been going on forever with no real progress.

Some folks are working on CM7 for the Atrix 2 (using the 2nd init method iirc).
Last I heard it was close to testing...

People (mainly Jim) are working on a method to get around the bootloader (bypass it) using kexec. It's maybe a couple weeks from being released. And wer're getting ICS sometime in July officially. We'll probably have a leaked version months before allowing us to get CM9 in. SO I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT SELLING YOUR PHONE. That is all.

Got the phone, rooted it and not even bothering with a ROM atm, just some tweaks (remove bloatware, deblur, launcher, cpu etc).
Honestly, in just the first day I'm liking this phone a bit more than the Atrix 4g. Phone is snappy, my speedtests are insane (don't know if it's true 4g lte, but I live in Boston and I got about 10mb/s down earlier, 1.5up), and the screen/colors seem a lot better than the 4g but that could just be all in my head due to the slightly larger screen size.
So I'm not gonna jump ship and go SGS II, just going to be patient and wait for the unlocked bootloader

New to Samsung GS3

Ive been an htc and sprint user for ever and i finally switched to verizon and got me the samsung gs3
i know this device is new so development is just getting started.
I hope to see some awesome roms on this phone
cause right now stock i dont like it at all...
im not a fan of touchwiz at all
what is the the go to rom at the moment for this phone
I am actually running stock rom on my phone but theres a thread for CM10 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788443
Though I see lots of people posting issues, so I've been staying away from it, and looking into the Touchwiz ROMS more.
I think one of the biggest ways to make touchwiz feel more like stock android experience is to use Apex or Nova launcher.

I am looking into getting the GS3 sometime this week as a Bday gift to myself. Turned 31 today and I am damned tired of my iphone. I had the Moto X2 and I hated it. I was always having to reboot the phone because of lag or it just freezing up. I went to the iphone to get away from this. I had read that because the X2 was one of the 1st duel core phones, there were a lot of issues. The GS3 being a quad core, there is almost zero lag and one of thos issues.
I knw this doesn't relate to the topic and I am sorry. Just really happy to be getting the GS3 to go with my Samsung Tab 2

The international version is the only version of GSIII with quad core. The US variants are dual core S4 (only processor that combined LTE) which benchmark quite favorably against quad core. Just clarifying because this is the Verizon model's thread were discussing this in.
Welcome to the GSIII either way! Overall, this phone has been great for me in almost every capacity.

I just switched from iPhone, I love it. It's so fast you could just run an alternate launcher if you dislike TouchWiz, there's no performance hit. I consider rooting essential for everyday apps but beyond experimentation I have no deep desire to flash a ROM. I'd like Jelly Bean but it's the fastest ICS device I've used even with a skin on it.

Only the Verizon version has any issues with ROMs. The locked bootloader makes custom kernels difficult; you have to bypass it using the kexec method and all this convoluted bull****.
If you want a custom ROM that's relatively easy to get, use a stock ROM like Synergy or Beans. I believe there's a holo theme for Synergy that makes the phone look like stock. Search around the Themes&Apps forum. Personally, I use Synergy 1.7, which has been pretty great.

People are working on getting the bootloader unlocked, but honestly I don't see it happening unless the FCC forces Verizon to do so. Flashing roms isn't that difficult really, but it's certainly not as easy as it was on my OG Moto Droid. Kexec is a workaround which I'm somewhat thankful for I guess. The main problem is there are currently many scary complications that can occur just from flashing any of these non TW roms right now. These problems aren't Verizon S3 specific I hear.
Personally I don't think CM/AOKP etc is worth flashing right now because of kexec and the possibility of losing IMEI/data. Yes the IMEI can be backed up or restored, but what a hassle. I flashed a CM10 nightly and then my data randomly died forever 10 minutes later. Flashing to stock/anything else was useless. Luckily reprovisioning my phone fixed the problem, but if it didn't..
I'm hoping that CM and stuff will be stable/safe within the next month or two but who knows? Verizon probably won't release JB until December or later on the S3.

[Q] What should I do with my Atrix2 when it arrives?

Hey guys!, I recently purchased an Atrix2, at the moment I can't decide if I'm more worried or excited (locked bootloader and all), lets just say I'm glad my investment wasn't too big. I'm coming from a Desire Z which was totally and completely hacked way before I bought one (Ended up owning 3 of them, 1 of which didn't have warranty... Ended up being a big investment, long story), so hopefully stock isn't too bad . I have some questions tho and if anyone would be willing to answer I'd be grateful, I've been lurking around here for a few days, if these questions have already been asked I apologize.
When my Atrix2 arrives what should I do with it, root it and install a 2.3.x rom, leave it stock, not root it, install an ICS leak?
How does overclocking work, I'd like to get it to 1.2ghz (GS2 speed), are we able to do that on a locked bootloader?
I know there's been no official word, but do you think the Atrix2 will get JellyBean? When?
How close are we to cracking that bootloader? I've been reading the threads and they're kinda hard to follow, there seems to be massive news on the horizon and everything looking good but then another thread says the complete opposite, how close are we to cracking that sucker open, and in your opinion do you think Moto will unlock the Atrix2 with their web unlock tool that voids the warranty?
I noticed there are 2 hardware versions (ME and MB I think), is everything compatible with each other or do I have to specifically make sure each rom and hack is for my version?
From long term owners how do you like the phone?
From people using ICS how is it? Compared to the AOSP and AOKP roms for other devices, is it..... bearable so to speak ?.
How many CM7/AOSP like mods can we have, I really hate using phones without the widgets in the pulldown status bar.
Coming from a very thick 3.7" 512mb ram 800mhz CPU (Tho capable of running JellyBean fairly well, and being QWERTY to be fair), I think the leap to 4.3" 1gb ram and 1.2ghz dual core will be very nice. The locked bootloader is a big let down but I hope the geniuses that are the Android Dev community come up with some wonderful hack and we're all running CM10 very soon, or at least that the ICS build is good enough and we can get some decent mods.

A) This is entirely your preference.
How does overclocking work, I'd like to get it to 1.2ghz (GS2 speed), are we able to do that on a locked bootloader?
A) See my guides in my signature -for Overclocking
I know there's been no official word, but do you think the Atrix2 will get JellyBean? When?
A) I seriously doubt it. We're one of the last to receive ICS, and still waiting for the official OTA to roll out in the US.
A) The developers have been working on this for almost a year, doesn't look promising at this point, but as soon as some advances are made, you'll read about them here. No, Moto will likely NOT add the A2 to the devices list for unlocking.
I noticed there are 2 hardware versions (ME and MB I think), is everything compatible with each other or do I have to specifically make sure each rom and hack is for my version?
A) The MB865 is intended for use on AT&T within the USA, while the ME865 has a different radio, sound device, WIFI chipset, and a few other hardware differences. It is basically a different device, with "close enough" hardware. I would not try using things from one for the other though, because even the ME865 has 3 different versions, with some small differences in hardware, but you also really need to watch for firmware compatibility.
From long term owners how do you like the phone?
A) My opinion is its decent, we have amazing devs, and they've done so much for this device.
From people using ICS how is it?
A) ICS completely changes the phone, in every way that's good.
Compared to the AOSP and AOKP roms for other devices, is it..... bearable so to speak ?.
A) They are way better than stock Motorubbish ROM.
How many CM7/AOSP like mods can we have, I really hate using phones without the widgets in the pulldown status bar?
A) Most every custom ROM (if not all) available for the A2 has drop down toggles.

There's a couple of ROMs that still keep in tact some or most of the Blur apps and UI, but most are "de-blurred". One of my favorites was Lithium ROM and SCv6, but that's all based on personal preferences. Some are odexed, others de-odexed. Just browse through the development section and look at each of the ROM's threads, they'll all have screenshots, features, and installation instructions. Some are flash able zips, others are CWM backup images. Everything you'll need to know in deciding on a ROM is in the dev section. Nothing wrong with flashing and trying each of them out, until you find one you really like...
Edit: I just looked, and seems like there's about four ROMs that will require the user to be on the leaked ICS version before flashing there's still several great ROMs for GB though!

I believe there's only two ROMs that are built off the leaked ICS version (SCv7 and Lunar Eclipse, though there may be more- I haven't clicked the through the development section much lately) but just wait until you get your phone, and see what version it is. Likely it will be SEARET, but I'm not certain.
