Laptop Mag "Tablet World Series" - Asus Transformer TF700

Just putting this out there. As of me posting, Microsoft Surface leads the Transformer Infinity 50.4% to 49.6%.
Poll ends 11/3 at 8am.
http://blog.laptopmag.com/tablet-wo...vs-microsoft-surface-voting-ends-113-at-8-a-m

put my vote in

The problem with Surface? There are currently NO apps except Microsoft Office available for it. Yep, it sure looks nice, but not if you want to do anything but browse the web. You're unable to install "desktop" applications on the device, and need to purchase them from Microsofts almost non-existent app market.
So yeah, put my vote in for the Infinity.

Yeah.. that is obvious that the vote is not here, but by replying it bumps the thread to the top and making it more noticeable to others. kind of the reason i am replying right now..

Hope sure they denoted it as the "Surface RT" tablet because it probably is worse.
on the other hand Microsoft Surface Pro tablet will rape every ARM tablet in existence since it's essentially a new generation Windows Tablet PC with a 1st party manufacture.

The "Pro" version isn't out yet, so can't be compared. Also, pricing for the Pro isn't out yet either, but I'm guessing it'll jump the price up by ~$500, if not considerably more.

Good find. I put in my vote. But its starting to look like a slaughtering. Something like 60% for surface and 40% for infinity.

It's a laptop magazine. Nothing but pc users. They don't know anything other than windows.
I'd rather have a linux distribution be the dominant platform rather than windows with Microsoft's greedy hands wrapped around it.

I smell something fishy...
I voted for the Infinity (because its the best tablet duh) and when i tried voting in the final on the 2nd... it wouldn't let me.... FIXED!!!!!!!

Rubbish. I'm a pc/windows user, have been since 3.1, but I still voted for the Infinity.
Of course the fact Windows got crap with Vista, just a microscopic bit better with 7, and utterly moronic with 8 doesn't help them win my vote...

G tablet #1 selling tablet on Amazon

Did you see the tweet from viewsonic? G tablet outselling both ipad 2 and Xoom. Heh. Viewsonic owes this community because without the developers here this would have never been possible. Thank you guys! I love my g tablet,.....now. There is a link in their tweet to an article about it (didn't know if I could post, let me know and I will post the link)

Sweet! And there is whole bunch of us who got it from Woot too. The community here is amazing and to think that about a week ago many of us thought that there wasn't much life left for our g-tabs.
Viewsonic put out a winner here, well with a little help from a modded rom and kernel and this thing is fast and pretty awesome IMO.
I'm following @viewsonic on twitter, and, just received the tweet a little while ago. I retweeted adding "Thank the modders". Heh.
I am hopeful that with the additional sales Viewsonic will continue to support this tablet as Nvidia has said they will support Harmony based devices as long as the manufacturers do (or something like that) Don't disappoint us VS.

I've been saying for months that VS is sitting on a goldmine in regard to their gtab. It's absolutely mind boggling that they seem to still be hesitant to cash in this goldmine. I don't understand why VS is so reluctant to endorse their own very popular product.
Edit.
It still seems like VS is trying it's darnest to promote the viewpad over the gtab even though hardly anyone even pays attention to the viewpad.

I wrote them that they were leaving money sitting on the table back when HC first came out and after the woot sale. All this tab needed was a solid OS. The article said it was beating ipad in sales and that it is set to win sleeper tab of the year. lol
Viewsonic has spent 1% on advertising the article said with most advertising coming from users like us and the boatload of youtube videos. The words they used was "went viral". Too funny!

I've been trying to figure out for months why the hell VS released this gtab and decided to let it go quietly into the night and die. I'm willing to bet the new found popularity this tablet enjoys has come quite a surprise to them. Did not one of their marketing personnels see this coming?
And again, they are still trying their darnest trying to promote the viewpad while seemingly hoping for the gtab to die a quiet death. I just went around their website again and the feel is still the same. Their not-so popular viewpad remains their #1 focus even though it's not really bringing in any money. The gtab, on the other hand, is raking in the dough. When are they going to realize their mistake and start loving their forgotten son, the gtab?

Yup. And still nobody is buying it. Some genius up high in VS decided to keep endorsing the failed products viewpad 7 and 10 while keep ignoring their succesful gtab. Let's face it, nobody wants a sluggish windows 7 atom processor in a tablet. I mean, what the hell are we going to do with it? Might as well get a netbook. Windows 7 was never designed for a mobile device like a tablet. And who the hell wants a 7 inch tablet that costs $500?
No wonder viewsonic ain't moving up the food chain any time soon. They got idiots running the show.
Edit.
Here's a video review of the viewpad 10. You can tell that the speaker was desperately trying to look for good things to say about the viewpad 10. Android 1.6? Windows 7? It's no good for anything.
That video was pretty sad. Is it me or is it thick as hell? The funny part was when he said it was quite responsive and it didn't move when he touched it. What does anyone need a dual boot tab for? I don't get that. Anyway next month they could be $199.
The commercial for the 7th inch has a guy holding it to his ear to make a call. Just put a Bluetooth earbud in his ear. He looked crazy with that big tab to his ear. Talking about the quickest route to brain cancer. The advertising for that device sucked.

But if you look around a bit you will see that VS must have been spending a fortune pushing the viewpads. They even made a bunch of videos and posted them on their website.
In other news, I'm starting to get the over capacity window thing for xda. Looks like xda is under seige again by wooters and amazoners.
Edit.
Half of the videos out there officially made for the gtab were criticisms of the gtab not being responsive because of the TnT UI. And yet in this video this guy was giving it a positive review even though he had to restart the OS to get a response.
The viewpad 7 and 10 are a total failure. VS should realize this and stop ignoring the gtab.

You can install a full Linux distro on it! I think that the latest version of Ubuntu has touchscreen support. I purchased a second g-tablet from Woot just to put Linux on it. But nVidia seems to have suspended Linux support for the Tegra line. If the Viewpad prices keep falling, I may have a g-tablet for sale, and then I will get a Viewpad!
Amazon currently lists the tablets in this order of popularity (4/21/11/ 17:22):
#1 ViewSonic g-tablet
#2 Motorola Xoom
#3 Apple iPad2
EDIT: The Viewpad 7 has an ARM11 processor. Not as easy to install Linux on that one.

WebOS dead, no more HP PCs!!

Thoughts. WebOS in the mobile world atleast is dead. Should Samsung or HTC purchase WebOS? Its a awesome OS, the devices just sucked.
What are you guys thoughts?
Let it die, the problem is app support, who is going to support a os that has no more devices being built?
So is it even worth buying HP tablet

I hope HTC does pick it up. I think it's one of the best OSes ever created. Too bad the hardware side of the equation was off kilter.
You guys have to realize webOS is NOT dead, the devices HP and Palm created are the things that are being dropped. They said they Are 100% continuing development on webOS and are just looking for companies that want to run webOS on their devices like HTC or Samsung.

true it would be a dead end, but there trying to find a company like htc or samsung to put it on, i guess if no one wants it on there phones then yes.
No, they said the mobile OS is dead. WebOS will continue in vehicles, printers and other appliances.
If I were HP I would've licensed it out a long time ago. WebOS can be some real competition to IOS and Android. Right now nothing is coming close to the two top dogs.
Imagine WebOS on a GSII.
htc, samsung, and sony could do as they do with android and windows. It makes sense to at least put some out there. I wouldn't purchase webos for exclusive rights, but expecially sony who could use a shot in the arm.

They also produced a tablet pc that had the quickest death in consumer history! We'll see what happens...I did buy one and can't wait to try it out and I am hoping we get an Android port.
There is something fishy with this. Selling them at 99 bucks now you have millions of devices sold that otherwise would not have sold at the regular price. Now you have 50 times more HP touchpad users then 2 days ago. Yes HP is losing money now, but will it pay off in the long run with all the new users and future development or with a sell or is this a set up for something new for HP? A company does not just clears its inventory out for any old reason HP has something up their sleeve.
No, its over with. Its not millions either. Less than 1 million units.
HP took a huge hit on exchange market as well.
Despite the fact that WebOS was a decent OS.. Apple and Google have just pulled all attention to them. Even from an objective point of view I hardly think anyone can get in between. (Windows Mobile, Bada, etc.)

Do you think Asus is mad with Infinity Tablet owners

How many of you think that Asus Corp. is mad at Infinity owners for exchanging their Primes For the Infinity and maybe that's why they have not released the Jelly Bean update for the TF700 cause the 300 did get the update and the 700 owners are able to install that firmware to their tablets I think that Asus has the update ready but does not want to release it cause they are but hurt for what we did.

This.
IMHO, not having JB yet is a GREAT thing. I doubt this was their intent but in effect they are using the low end tablets (TF3xx) as betas for the TF700. Go look at the TF300 forum those guys HATE the JB update... they're asking for downgrade methods, etc. And ASUS is working on a patch for it for all the issues. Hopefully, the TF700 version since it is so similar is being gated by that stability update and will be much more stable from day one.
ASUS' TF ICS firmware was a wreck initially, too (and in fact it's still very much subpar).
Be careful what you wish for in terms of FW updates. ASUS is doing us high end guys a favor. If you want to go nuts with FW or be cutting edge, unlock. The baseline version should be solid if at all possible, IMHO.

Stores are able to return the defective merchandise to the manufacturer and receives credit in most cases. It is rare that a distributor is unable to get a refund for a defective device... we all know the prime is one.
But I agree, the statement that they are delaying JB on purpose because they are mad at the prime owners is a little silly. Companies do not have feelings, they try to decide what is best for the company and do it. They obviously would have a hard time being mad at all of us FREE BETA TESTERS that PAID to BETA TEST!!! Seems pretty unlikely. I just hope that when they have perfected the tf700 firmware and the dust settles, that they do something to show us all how much they appreciate the early adopters. Without us..... there would be many more unhappy owners out there. We did a lot of their dirty work for them- tweaking, analyzing, and even working directly with them to resolve THEIR issues.
Hope they realize who helped out and reward them accordingly.

Did you know that in addition to the period at the end of your paragraph, you're allowed to use additional punctuation when writing, the purpose of which is to break up your statement into sentences. Each sentence expresses an independent thought, statement or question.
Many people find that observing shared rules of spelling and syntax -- commonly known as "grammar" -- increases the ability to properly convey ideas to others. That is, grammar can help you communicate more effectively. You should give it a try! :silly:

With all of the issues the TF300's are having with Jelly Bean I am pretty happy Asus has held off on the TF700 upgrade. I think the TF700 upgrade will be alot better off than it would have been if it came out shortly after the TF300's release.

Companies are people, my friend. They are capable of independent thought, and have feelings. they hurt just like everyone else. I for one, feel ashamed that i returned my prime because in retrospect, i hurt Asus' feelings. I should have dealt with a crappy $500 tablet, lest i cause undue harm to a multinational company. Not getting jelly bean Is punishment for our reckless behavior with a tender heart.

I also see it a bit differently from the OP. ASUS got us, in effect, to be paid beta testers, as many have already said. Those of us who swapped Primes for Infinities could easily have defected for Samsung, or someone else. I've seen many posts -- both here and elsewhere -- of people trading their Primes for other makers' tablets. The fact that we're still with ASUS, and many of us have tablets that are functioning properly, actually helps ASUS in the long run (IMHO).

I think if you read it carefully, it says exactly the opposite of that. The same as every other story on the topic for months. The only news is the possible delay.
Now, according to the Czech tech news site, IHNED, Microsoft product manager Petr Bobek has said that Microsoft is planning to release native iOS and Android versions of Office 2013 in the first quarter of 2013

Officially, the only thing Microsoft had to say at first was that "As we shared previously, Office Mobile will work across Windows Phones, Android phones and iOS, and we have nothing additional to announce today about retail availability of the new Office."

No matter when Microsoft delivers the Android and iOS goods, Microsoft's support of any version of Office on a non-Windows smartphone or tablet strikes me as an odd move. In a shareholder letter, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that Microsoft is shifting its model to focus on devices and services. This is a radical and dangerous shift for a company that's always made it money from software licensing. And, now, instead of using Office as a crowbar to pry users from iPads and Android tablets to its Surface tablets, Microsoft is going to offer Office 2013 on its device rivals? Odd. Very odd.

Any Microsoft app on an Android tablet will just hog up all the resources and drag the heck out of it. Why does anyone even need another document app anyway? Excel and Word. Plenty of programs can deal.
Kingsoft Office is pretty much MS Office by another company, anyway.

I'm already sure I don't want desktop 2013. It'll probably be designed for W8, on which you can't play any pre-8 games. Since I won't be taking W8 because of that, 2013 will be useless.
And knowing Micro$oft, they'll make another new 'standard' extension that only works in their newest product. (.docx is still driving me insane...) Combine that with the majority of people who are too stupid to select .doc in the save menu and you're pretty much forced to buy the new M$ Office, because loading it in ex. Openoffice doesn't work because the layout is scrambled.

What I thought was bad was 1) the delay; 2) the strong complications from the article that it's not sound business for MS to release an app that would kill at a stroke the reason for most people and businesses to buy a Surface - at least not until that product had established itself or failed.

I wouldn't take that last part too seriously. MS has already lost a particular percentage of the tablet market and they know it. Over years of not acknowledging that, AND of even viewing their own mobile unit as competition for their desktop unit (which is the reason that, for example, MS OneNote on winmo 6.x SUCKED so epically -- it was intentional), they've lost serious mobile branding ground that could have been theirs if MS Office was ubiquitous. Indeed, if MS Office had been everywhere while their mobile division burned, their climb back to mobile relevance wouldn't be as steep.
People would still associate them with quality at that level and they could build on that. Instead, recent customers of MS Mobile, like myself, view them as hacks and wouldn't buy their crap now even if it were undeniably the best stuff ever because of the long-standing negative association. The cost of not having MS Office Mobile on major platforms is not just lost license fees, it's billions in brand equity that they're having to spend in ad dollars without much to show for it so far.
The guy at zdnet is still stuck in the paradigm that got MS mobile where it is now.

So am wondering someone smarter then me ( eveyone ) ,,,, would have fixed/figured a way to LOAD Windows8 on the TF700
Specs seems nearly same (pity windows can only do 1200 x800res)...
think it be a SUPER NICE to have such a beast !
cheers
This is a question, so it belongs in the Q&A-section.
Legally you cannot install Windows 8 RT on another tablet that doesn't come with it and Ilegally it's really hard because Windows 8 RT requires to have a secure boot on the tablet so you can only run Windows 8 RT
The real question is Ubuntu and Android possible?
And also you shouldnt forget that we on our tf700t have only 1gig of ram, and winRT seemingly needs 2...

(Too) short answer: no.
Slightly longer answer: this will probably not happen for a looooooooooooong time to come, if ever.
EDIT: it is available in an early alpha (it did take a long time, however).

Medium answer - Don't hijack a thread with a topic that has two other threads about it (at least two )
I'm interested in this as well. MS has be pretty developer friendly with W8, so potentially it might/someone else might do it. The question of legality might be answered by purchasing a license if they will sell them independently - just like bootcamping a Mac.

I haven't seen this software agreement or license... Proof or it didn't happen!
Some of us have nvflash. If we can get a full blob off of an rt device, who knows? As a wise lamp once said, "fact is, there just isn't enough fact!"

You may know that even with NVFlash, you cannot scrape the (Android) bootloader from one TF700 and run it on another one, because it is encrypted with a device-specific key. I expect something similar on the RT devices.

You're a free person, so you can wish reality away as much as you want. The main trouble is with the manufacturers locking down their devices down more and more. Again, this will not happen -- at least not until a long time from now -- and if it does, your TF700 will be EOL. You'll have gone off to another device by then, as the developers will have. No developers and only leechers left = no progression and only nagging, and a broken community.
I think my intent was misunderstood. It is really fashionable to act as though you know it all, and insist that others believe as you do. No one thought the HD2 would go the way it did when it was released, but look at how far it went. There are countless other devices that never had anything cool happen with them though. I will reiterate my point with clarification: Without having devices and software to try things with, nothing will happen. With devices and software to try things with, things might or might not happen. But pretending that you have all the answers, good or bad, is just plain ignorant. Uncertainty abounds here, even in the face of a likely void of development or effort.

I seem to have missed your post, and with the risk of being dubbed a digital necrophile, I will take the chance of replying.
I do not know your background or justification for calling someone else ignorant, but I will would call that an arrogant stance. "Clarify" all you wish, but -- the fact that I actually agree with your statement that with no one trying and/or possibly sacrificing his/her device in the process for the common good nothing will ever come about notwithstanding -- I do not see you volunteer your device for that purpose either.
Yes, uncertainty abounds all over the world in any field of human endeavour you can think of -- I'm actually a scientist myself so I know this is, unfortunately, a fact -- but that's just stating the blatantly obvious.
I know this is old
