I just installed the Newest Xoom Zone Rom with functioning Camera and HDMI, and I love it. I was going to post this in the Dev forum for the Rom, but because I'm a noob it won't let me. Is there any way to port the Face Lock from the Nexus to a Xoom. I tried the simple, copy .apk to the system install of the zip before I flashed it, and it crashes when I go to set it up. Face Lock appears under the security heading, but it doesn't function. I like this feature on my Nexus, and I think it would work great on a tablet. Is there a way to make this function on the Xoom, or will we have to hope Google releases a way to build it?

It would be great to have it in deed! But if i were you i should post it into antother section.
Functionality like this will come in time.. We have really only had ics for 30 or so days and alot of devs are working hard on core functions and ensuring it is stable, we only got cam and hdmi in the last few days... Also other devs not associated with the builds may be able to come up with a solution but it may require libs or other files as u have seen just an apk drop wont cut it.. Or the apk itself may need porting for tablets or the xoom specifically, personally i dont know i wish i did. i do think though face unlock will come soon as alot of people are like yourself and want it... i would like it myself

I wasn't trying to *****, believe me I'm so impressed with the Dev support of this thing. I don't really know a lot about programming or any of that stuffs, and I wasn't sure if anyone had any insight to offer in getting this to work. It seems like the only way that is happening is by testing apart the APK and there is NO way I'm smart enough to do that. I was surprised when I saw the camera support already. Im just really hoping there is a way for this to work eventually, it seems like this is more suited to a tablet than a phone, and hopefully we get this working eventually.
Is there any major milestone that must be overcome in order for the cyanogenmod team to officially support the HOXL? Are we just waiting for ROM cooks to take initiative? I know S-off is nice to have, but I don't believe it's a requirement.
No but kernel source would be required for jelly bean at the very least. And probably a little more developer interest.

what's the deal with developer interest on the One X ? Is this not a popular phone or is it that most developers bought an international version?
Seems like ther'es been a fair amount of work as far as ROMS and mods and things go, but the Kernel source is the reason that there are working JB roms for the GS3 and we don't even have CM9 fully working yet....
I believe the developer interest come from a few factors.
1) There are few developers that get paid nothing and porting CM9/10 is a lot of work.
2) There are hundreds of devices how do you pick which one gets the CM9/10 .... sales.
The HTC One XL is a nice device but as a LTE device and from HTC it is likely not the strongest selling phone in North America

There's definitely more people on the One X international version. People will find that most phones with kernel source available and unlocked bootloader will draw more developers... But in this case quantity =/= quality. I've had several android phones over the years and yes, while it's nice to have a giant land of developers with pages and pages of roms to look through, they lose their luster to mediocrity. You'll find some of the best devs who weren't discouraged by the locked down devices such as this one, and as a result, the product (ROM, kernel, etc) will always be top-notch. And a smaller, more intimate dev community encourages more interaction and community support, making the overall experience that much better.
I think we already have pretty solid support, given that there's still no kernel source available.
We have great Sense-based ROMs (the CleanROM family, amongst others) as well as pretty-solid alphas of CM9 and AOKP. Personally I've been very tempted to try either CM9 or AOKP, but I haven't made the plunge yet. A friend of mine is using CM9 has his daily driver without issue.
I believe the team working on CM9 has plans to incorporate their currently-unofficial branch into being officially a part of CM9 (or CM10) once kernel source is released and the remaining issues are resolved.
Functioning CM9/10 is all i really want on this device. I don't need anything flashy. Just give these awesome devs the source kernel HTC!!!
The major milestone is kernel source. Without it, the devs can't squash some of these remaining bugs on our device. Without that, we won't get merged into the main branch (afaik). As to why there are more people on the international version, just look at what you just said. The INTERNATIONAL version. It's available on more carriers and yes, it is a heck of a lot easier to develop for since they didn't have to waste time trying to figure out how to unlock the bootloader (which makes them at least a month of ahead of us in terms of development) and they have source.
Trust me, once we have source, development will skyrocket.

Our CM9 port is totally functional! Though...not 100%...but from what I've seen it's good enough for a daily driver. I'm running AOKP M6.2 and it's perfectly usable.

yeah, my issue is that the few things that ARENT working are the things I want the most. Frustrating that this is as good as it can get unless HTC releases that source (which it's sort of staring to look like they may get away with not doing at all)
I think source will come. It's just sad that i have JB running on my old as bones Captivate while my shiny new one x is stuck with Sense :crying:
AOKP is great, very little doesn't work. It even has NFC. I have been using it for about a week. Very stable.

what on AOKP doesn't work currently? I'm trying to decide whether to switch back to something like CleanROM DE or over to AOKP right now.
I just got a nexus 7 and was planning on using it as a nav/media player in my car , mounted in front of the existing stereo. What I'd like to do is use my phone as a wifi hotspot (triggered by a NFC tag in the car) and then stream music through the tablet via bluetooth.

If you connect your tablet through the wifi hotspot on your phone then you wouldn't need bluetooth right?

Not quite sure what you mean,
The tablet would get Internet from my phone, then I'd use the tablet to stream music to my stereo via bluetooth

From the AOKP thread:
What doesn't work:
Tethering (coming soon)
Panorama mode in Camera app
2G/3G switch (needs kernel source)
Same multitouch bug as CM (needs kernel source) <- When you have multiple touch points active and you remove one, the phone loses track of all of the others
Face Unlock
Other things may come up too depending on your specific situation (especially if you don't clear dalvik and cache or don't factory reset).

Edit- I was looking at the wrong AOKP thread.
(for whatever reason, android beam doesn't seem to be working when I try it on milestone 6.2 though) I touch the phone to the tablet (both with NFC and android beam turned on) and nothing happens.
Tried it with a photo open as well to see if you needed content to beam . No luck

I don't think beam can actually send photos, only links and contact information. SBeam on the SGSIII can send files and such because it uses Wifi Direct to transfer files. Try sending a web page or a contact card between your devices and see if that works? I've never used NFC yet so I'm just going by what I read.

I got it to work using CleanRom (not a photo, it told me it didn't support receiving large files) . I might flash something new tonight... I really just want something that does wifi tether (which I'll have to read into more... I feel like it's tougher to get that feature working on this phone than it was on my Evo) and NFC (so I can automatically turn on tethering when I get in the car) . I'm alright using a sense-based ROM if I have to since anything is pretty fast on this phone and cleanrom is relatively AOSPish

Sending Photos only works on JB. With ICS you can you can send contact info and Youtube links. Works between CM9 on One X and my N7 running JB.
On what firmwares, photon q works with lapdock in mirroring mode? On stock all work. Who connected photon q to the lapdock on CM or CARBON?
I'm wondering the same thing many years later. My guess, based on what I've been able to find, is that only works on latest stock rom. (earlier stock roms display only, no keyboard/mouse/sdcard, latest support all hardware). And couldn't find anyone that got webtop to run on PQ. Lotta people with ideas of how to make it work by using atrix version, but couldn't find anyone who did it.
I ran across a lapdock 500 for cheap is the reason I ask.
Well, seems no. Just tried Jellybean, no keyboard/trackpad, and display is very zoomed in, like a resolution problem.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41563237&postcount=10
With CM11, keyboard & touchpad work and mouse pointer appeared on phone screen, but distorted unusable display.
With sfos 3.0.8.9, nothing.
Apparently only the final ICS works, but I haven't tested that yet as I don't have any easy way to install... if anyone actually reads this and has a twrp backup of ics, that would be great. Otherwise I'm gunna have to figure out how to run rsdlite, I think one of my old computers has dual boot to xp on it, I tried rsdlite under wine but it doesnt see my phone.
Finally tested stock ICS, and finally everything works (in mirror mode). It is an exact mirror so in apps that allow landscape, everything looks huge on the screen. Some apps allow you to shrink text within the app (i.e. terminal I could set the font size down) and I'm trying to find a browser that'll let me shrink, but still all the UI headers and gadgets adress bar etc are huge looking and can't do anything about that. On an app that forces portrait, it looks more normal cuz that's similar to the size of a modern phone (although you're then only using ~1/3 of the screen pillarboxed).
I've never used Android this old in my life, not even on PQ. But beside the point.
I don't think anyone cares about this device anymore, but this is annoying me. I just read the wikipedia article and someone (with no reference) had claimed it works with LOS. However my phone with LOS14.1 on it has a battery issue and I'm tired of taking apart these things, and I'm tired of re-installing OSs, I think I wanna keep my others on sfos & stock ics. But someday in the future I will either swap batteries or get another battery and try my LOS14.1 phone with it. Cuz if that works how well whoever put that in wikipedia says, that's awesome.
I never used ICS, I don't even know if I can root it the normal way, dunno if I can use simmod with it... all before my time... so LOS would be great if that works. Plus ics supports even less apps than kitkat.
maybe....

Android 4.4 KitKat Features
Google hasn't revealed any features yet of the upcoming Android 4.4 KitKat but instead, the company said: "our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody."
With this statement from Google, it is expected that KitKat will become accessible to Android-running devices with lower RAM such as 512MB and older Android version such as 2.3 Gingerbread. This optimisation has been rumoured to be included in Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.

lol no. Unless if it was created by an awesome person here, but there's no point in that. This phone is long dead, earlier this week I finally moved on, and oh my gosh, its been great having a Nexus 4 over this phone that was out-dated before it was even released back in Spring 2011.
Nope
You'll probably never see a KitKat version on the Charge. The main reason is the same that you never saw ICS or JB on the Charge. The code for the radios was never released. I've tried JB on the Charge, it runs well; however the camera and data don't work. Also, while I still use the Charge as my primary phone, there's not many of us left.
ICS and all versions of JB work fine on this phone already... we are just missing the radios.
I doubt anyone cares about this phone anymore anyways...

I agree with both assessments. Thanks for all the work you've done on Tweaked, Dwith. My wife and I love it on our charges.
P.S. One problem I had with Tweaked Lite, when I installed it, it didn't install file manager(I think that's what it's called on stock) and when I went to select a sound(not ringtone) for a ringtone it would show and error. I went to tweaktools and installed the file manager and it works fine. Not sure why it wouldn't work with my other file management programs.

I agree with your take on MyFiles, one of the first thing I did was replace it with something else(currently FX File Manager). I wasn't a big deal, I had planed on copying my few ringtones to system anyway.
while I agree that the we are more likely to see Republicans and Democrats agree on something, would still be interesting to see if this holds true. I really would not be surprised though, if older devices do get upgraded to the latest OS - that could mean larger revenues for Google. more folks would be able to use their apps, services, etc. without having to get a new device.
however, after then, they could see how slow their device is, and then they decide to upgrade. but still, worth keeping an eye on.
Google and Verizon both agreeing to do this? Hell will freeze over first.

From my understanding of several stories posted from Android sites since KitKat was announced, It sounds like either Google is going to update phones to KitKat silently like they have been doing everything else without the help of Samsung or Verizon or perhaps we just get these features without ever actually upgrading to KitKat
Hangouts is supposed to be replacing the stock Messaging app-If Google can do that then why would they need anything from Samsung/Verizon??

The truth of the matter is this. The Motorola Droid 1, a phone I bought as a media/mp3 player for 50 bucks and fixed up, is working better than a phone I paid 300 new and had nightlies and better support. I loved my charge, the battery sucked. And the phone I use now is the Verizon note 2 and sprint note 3 as a business phone since I now work for the sprint corporation. Do I miss my charge? Yes. Do I wish it had some cyanogenmod support being a phone 1 1/2 years newer than the droid 1? yes. As soon as I can learn how to make a rom for the charge, I plan to make an ics or jb nightly that will support a wifi only support on this relic. It was my first 4g phone. I have it in my desk and feel sad since it helped me achieve so much.

That's exactly what I was thinking - even if the radios weren't released, having the phone to use over wifi would be good enough for me. I guess that's the question - would it be possible to work up a kitkat ROM that was just purely wifi?

I have a Fascinate as well, but haven't installed any of the KK offerings for it yet. I did notice that when updating the Fascinate to KK you have to flash a 4.1 or 4.2 rom first, to get the file system setup, right? Then flash the 4.4 rom. Would the steps be the same for the Charge?

AFAIK you shouldn't have to flash any rom first.. I could be wrong. I don't keep up with all the fascinate development. I did flash a 4.4 rom in the past from cm10.1.
I have a build enviroment set up and I am running into problems building cm11 for the fascinate. I think by the errors that I need to increase the system partition. Because the build always fails at making the system.img. The build guides make it seem like you should run into no errors at all.
I'll start building for the charge soon. I'm too much of a noob to actually develop for it right now, but I think I can atleast boot it once I figure out how to build it.

not sure if I mentioned this earlier, but it could be the fact that the charge is based on RFS system (GB 2.3). I believe android went EXT4 with ICS and higher. there are some kernels that can convert the Charge to EXT4 - so not sure if that would help ya.
I just helped my Dad get a Photon Q because he wanted an android with a keyboard. After looking at the youtube videos I didn't think that the Photon Q could be rooted, much less have a custom rom put on it because of the new security measures, like KNOX, after the updates. Looking at the threads here I realized that it can be rooted. How difficult is it to root and flash a custom rom? Is there a guide? From looking at reviews, the battery life is short.
I thought of getting one for myself. Is it worth buying from Sprint?

Most of the answers to the questions you've asked will be relative to whoever is answering them...with that in mind I'll give you my 2 cents..
Yes, if you like having a Qwerty keyboard (I don't know if I can live without one after getting used to this one) the Q is still Sprint's best device to meet that need.
Rooting your Q is pretty easy, especially compared to some other phones I've rooted, and once you learn the correct button combos getting into recovery mode, hard resetting the phone, etc all work very quickly. With that being said, there is a steep learning curve starting out so I suggest doing your diligent research as there are already many tuts/guides available for the Q that will help you get root privileges and flash a custom Recovery and then ROM onto your Q.
With the unification of the MOTO_MSM8960(think that's right) we now have even more ROMs available for the Q and I have tried all of them, lol. Battery life is not spectacular but there is a lot you can do to maximize what you have....I rarely need a charge until late in the evening so long as I'm not gaming on the phone the entire day.
As far as I know there are no verified leaks or even rumors of a new Qwerty or slide-out style device set to release any time soon so I would still say this is a good time to purchase one, especially since you can probably get a killer deal on them now.
I'm currently running the latest version of KitKat with a custom ROM even though I think this phone doesn't even have Gingerbread on it when it ships...think mine came with 4.0.2 version of Android. So don't worry too much about getting the latest software onto your phone as it will definitely work with the latest if you go the custom rom route.
Anyway, hope that helps some. If you have any, more-specific, questions please feel free to ask.

I didn't think that the Photon Q could be rooted, much less have a custom rom put on it because of the new security measures, like KNOX, after the updates.

KNOX is a Samsung-only affair, mind ya. How easy rooting can be is already said above.

Thank you greatly. I think I will get one. I am used to rooting the Samsung Epic 4G(with a keyboard). Do you know of a good guide or youtube video to root the Photon Q? Do you also know if using a custom ROM will kick you off 4G or 4G LTE?

Here is the forum for the ROMs and rooting guidelines. If you do not have SIM mod the 4G should work with the custom ROMs (at least the JB ones, no sure for KK)

I tried both links, but they didn't take me to any videos. I'm not on my phones browser. Can you post them to view on a PC? Thanks

Do you know if there is a video/guide for rooting CM11? I downloaded an app from the Play Store on my friends Photon Q called "Portable Wi-Fi hotsptot Free" from Core Technology. It made his hotspot active. I tested it by signing into his Photon Q's wifi network from from my phone and it worked. I only used it for about 5 minutes then uninstalled the app because he was afraid that Sprint would charge him to use the hotspot. I later called Sprint to check and they said that the hotspot was not active. I wonder if they could catch it and charge him if it was used more frequently.

If you have CM11 (Android 4.4.x, KitKat), you already have root and built-in WiFi hotspot function. From what I know, the built-in hotspot function in custom ROMs is unlike those in stock ROMs, they aren't tied to carriers. I could be wrong of course, since I'm not even in the US.

Correct, if you are running a custom ROM they don't seem to notice.
I tether via USB and wifi frequently and Sprint has never said anything. I do not have a tethering plan.
I know this thread is old... but I feel its still relevant.
This phone IS WORTH BUYING, especially if you are a die hard QWERTY person like myself. It appears to be the last man standing, riding off into the sunset.
The phone is basically a GS3 processor with a keyboard which is still a great phone. It functions great for work, custom roms, minor gaming, etc.
Since you can pick up a used one from Ebay in good condition for $90 it is becoming a great value as well.
The aftermarket community is still very active since they appear to have a soft spot for a true workhorse slider phone.
Until the "budget slider phones" have specs that meet or exceed the GS3 then this phone is still the best slider money can buy.
In the meantime if you care about new slider phones with max stats as a flagship device then you need to make your voice heard on facebook posts, blog posts, etc from all the mojor carriers like LG, Moto, and Samsung. I personally refuse to buy a phone without a slider and I let them know at every chance I get.
What ever happened to "Droid DOES"? Droid DOES NOT have a keyboard.

Also you can do one click root and unlock programs, motochopper and motopocalypse. they are very easy. All you have to do is get fastboot onto your computer. there are some shell programs that include fastboot without downloading the entire android SDK
Yes, it's quite simple:
If you're into qwerty sliders, Photon Q is the top Android device ever manufactured in this category.
No matter that it's more than 1.5 year old now, no other/better high-end sliders have been produced since that time.
This device offers official bootloader unlock, so it's as open as Android gets.
The software support for its MSM8960 SoC is still under active development by the SoC manufacturer Qualcomm (published by CAF), so it can be perceived as a modern device even now.
The weakest spot of this device in my eyes is its 1785 mAh battery. But it easily survives one day of my active usage, so I'm fine with it. Just don't forget to put it on charger when you go to sleep .
