[Q] Hardware Issues - Screen Cables - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have had a loose cable issue with my TF101 for a while. Within the warranty period I first had the issue where the screen cable becomes loose and makes it seem like the screen is dead, when in actuality it's just the cable.
(reference:

pic)
I sent it in and they fixed it. Shortly after I had the problem again and fixed it myself, because I was pretty certain what the issue was. For a while after resitting the cable in the connector jack, I had no problems. Then just recently I had the issue again. This time I noticed the screen wasn't completely blank, just extremely dim. I snapped the cable back in and it worked fine, again. Then a week later - a few days ago - it had the same problem. Dim screen. I open it up again, make sure both sides of the cable are seated properly, but can't seem to fix the issue.
Regardless of my opening it, the TF101 is out of warranty now. Any ideas of why the usual fix is no longer working? Any ideas of what I can try to do to fix it? Is it possible to find a replacement for the cable anywhere?
Thanks.

Weird fault with Note 10.1. Help!

Hi guys, newbie here, and im in desperate need of your help!
So I decided to buy an Note 10.1 and yesterday I received it. Straight away (after turning on) I noticed this rather irritating noise (like a notification sound but not one that is the ringtones options on the tablet) that the tablet made when I held it with one hand well, at first I thought it was a motion gesture since whenever I hold it with one hand (the right hand) it switches to the previous app if your in an app, or previous Web page when surfing the net. So I searched the options 100 times, and nothing to toggle off.
Anyway it bugged me more and more and I couldn't figure it out, then by chance i just pushed slightly on the back of the tablet and the notification noise goes off. Push again, it happens again. I decided that it could be a loose connection being made and remade every time I decompress the right side back panel (I can play it like a piano). So I took the back panel off (a pain in the ****) and noticed a ribbon cable that runs directly where I push the back panel (the S pen sensor cable). It was plugged in correctly, but wasn't taped to the battery like the 2 fatter ribbon cables.
So, I taped it down thinking that me pushing the back panel was moving it and creating a loose connection. I thought I had solved it. Booted it back up, no sound!!!!! Reinstalled the back panel, booted again and BOOM, the sound returns.......
Gutted.
Not sure what to do next, it definitely sounds as if something is disconnecting and reconnecting like a USB on a PC, im getting the sound but no notification or error. I have no idea why this would make an app switch to the previous app or webpage when on net.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Well, it seems I have solved the issue. Since this is a new account, I can't post youtube videos. So I'll leave those out for the time being.
Firstly, heres a video showing the fault. As you can see, I've narrowed it down to the docking station/charger connector.
The ribbon cable was seemingly depressed causing it to disconnect briefly before reconnecting when released. Probably the down side of having a flimsy plastic case.
Solve the issue I removed the ribbon cable and taped a small amount of foam right at the mouth of the connector, making the whole connection sturdier and harder to depress with the cover on, which can be seen here.
Hopefully this helps anyone who finds themselves with a similar issue.

that woulda went straight back to the store
Yep, if the problem isn't fixed there's no way it'll get fixed under warranty now...
If the device is less than a week old, in Oz, the shop is supposed to replace the device immediately. This doesn't mean they won't try the old "It'll take 2 weeks to fix" and "It has to be sent back for repairs" schtick....

I got it from Ebay, although it was listed as new/unused.

[Q] Digitizer problems

Hi,
I have a question regarding to a digitizer that suddenly started going on the blink, meaning sometimes it doesn't work at all. The screen works normal but it doesn't respond to input. If it doesn't no amount of restarts will help. But if I let the phone turned off for a night, in the morning it will often just work.
I disassembled the phone and checked that the connector was properly connected and it seems to be (I took it out and put it back in). There is no obvious damage on the phone.
I was wondering if there are any known causes for this behaviour. I could just order another digitizer and install that, but since there is no visible damage, I'm a bit worried that it'll just be the same problem. Could it have something to do with the battery? I still have the original and it's not exactly great anymore. I run Shantur's CM11.
Cheers,
Marc

Keeps going into car mode...

My M8 for the past week has been entering car mode for no apparent reason. Could it be there is something wrong with the USB port on the phone or something else?
It's the charger/cable you're using. My M8 does it as well with a cable (that's a power-only cable, no data pins) I use to charge my phone from my PC with. I've had 4 replacement M8s (all for separate hardware issues) and they all did the same thing on the same cable. It hasn't done it with any of the other several chargers I use at home. But when it does to it on that one cable, it only seems to do it when I try to use any demanding apps/games while plugged in. It won't do it if I'm just poking around the launcher or browser.
Mine is happening when not plugged in also.

Ahh, well then yeah, I would have to say there's definitely some hardware issue with your USB port then.
Yup, my phone is screwed its stuck in car mode, tried everything. Is there a way to edit a system file to completely disable it? Replacing phone is not an option for me.

I've tried disabling/freezing anything with the word "car" in it in Titanium Backup to no avail on my M8, it still does it with that same cable. When it does it and the "Car Mode Enabled" notification shows up in the notification shade, I can long-press it and go to app info, where it takes me to "Android System", so it appears to have hooks deep into the Android OS and something you can't really disable. This Xposed module may have some options to disable it or at least keep it from being so invasive if you're rooted.
But I guarantee you that you can get the phone replaced under warranty, even if you have it S-Off'd/unlocked, because I have done it. Unless your phone is physically damaged..? But even then, they may not charge to repair the USB port or motherboard if that's the only issue. Can't hurt to ask HTC.
I seem to have "fixed" it by plugging it in about 20-30 times and violently yanking out the cable... Not sure how long this fix will last since looking into the port I seen nothing wrong with any of the pins or any contaminants in there, also high pressure air didn't work.

I had exact same issue. It is debris stuck in the port. Get some computer duster or air compressor and it will clear it up
Nice
Hey you guys need to go to app manager then swipe to (all) under that you should disable dock mode and car mode then reboot. Should fix problem for live. Some magnets and other objects will toy with the sensors in your phone expecially the ones by the USB connector
I've been having this problem too. The Car app and Daydream would randomly open and close. I've just performed a hard reset and it appears to have fixed the problem.
----------UPDATE 3 DAYS LATER.....
So a hard reset has not fixed this. The car app did not open for a couple of days but I have had the loud speaker turning on every time I answer a call. I've just used my earphones with the phone for the first time since I performed the hard reset and now the car app is opening again. I've tried to clean out the 3.5mm socket but its not making a difference. It seems strange that the hard reset did kind of fix it until the earphone socket was used. Now I really don't know if it's a hardware or software issue!
I had the same issue with my M8 unlocked version. Also had the problem where the speakerphone would go on and off during calls and some other issues but now since updating to the newest HTC build with Android 5.0 I haven't noticed anything.
Could it be that HTC were aware of these issues and have now fixed them?
Have any of you had progress with the new update or are the issues still apparent?
Will update later when I have had more time to test the new software out but as of now it looks like its fixed.
Mine just started doing this tonight too.. no matter what kind of cable gets plugged in to it, it goes into car/ docked mode and turns my wifi on, and rotates all around when I don't want it to. It's VERY annoying. I tried doing a factory reset on it and it's still doing it when I plug a charger in. It also is doing it just randomly when no cable is plugged in.
I'm wondering if a lot of people are having this issue recently, if it was something in one of the recent updates to the HTC service pack sent out by HTC via the Play Store. Anyone know???
Well, so much for that update...
After almost exactly a week without any problems it started acting up again this morning. In and out of carnode. Guess I'll just make use of my warranty and send it in for service.
yep.. me too. Did a reset and was working fine for about a week and just started doing it again today. WTF.
This was happening to me back in the fall. IIRC, my fix was to clean out the charging port. Look for how-to on web. I think the problem is some crossed pins with dirt making the phone think it's plugged in to dock.

My phone just started doing this on the 5th.
It also rotates when it's not supposed to? It is so annoying and idk what to do. Is this a. HTC issue or what?

I had my phone sent in for service and it turned out to be a faulty speaker. They swapped it and I haven't encountered any of the problems I had prior to sending it in.
How the speaker was interfering with the operating system I have no idea, my best guess it was shorting out something but it's just a theory.
phone keeps entering car mode
I have had this issue and completely fixed it, on your phone find car mode, scroll down to a hidden settings menu, in settings disable auto dock mode, auto connect, in fact disable everything, then exit car mode using the exit button. Restart your phone and hopefully it never enters car mode again and charges normally.
I had this issue for months and bought a new phone that I didn't like so came back to the HTC and eventually fixed it.
This is the flex USB cable. They go bad and cause car mode / dock mode like this. The cable itself is $14 and you likely will be replacing the sticker speaker grills which are $11. I have personally repaired this and it is the only permanent fix. Not disabling an app. Not removing an app. This failure is due to hardware and hardware only.
BTW.... way to dig up an old thread lol.

I have this issue since three days and it's driving me mad.
Tried all the suggested solutions and nothing worked so far.
I've ordered a new USB flex cable with charge dock pcb. I'll be sure to post my experiences with that, hope it fixes this annoying issue as Dottar suggested

[Q] Screen stops working intermittently, seems to be hardware related, help?

So I've been having a ton of issues with my phone lately, to the point I can't use it anymore. I'll list them in case they may show what the problem is. First, the charging port went out. I swapped out for a new flex cable on ebay and all was well again. Next the speaker stopped working unless I would squeeze the bottom of the phone, and then stopped working completely (Not sure if this was the speaker itself or if it was making poor contact with the new flex cable.).
Up next, and the worst problem of all, is the screen stopped working intermittently. I seemed to be able to get it working better when I would squeeze the phone, which seemed strange to me. This kept happening until it stopped working altogether!
So, thinking it was the flex cable, I just swapped it for another new one from a different seller, and it still isn't working. If I reboot the phone the screen works perfectly fine unless I put light pressure on the back of the above the "s" in nexus, then the screen shuts off and won't come back on again until I restart the phone again. As soon as I reboot the phone the screen works great again until I tap that spot.
I'm a bit at a loss to what I should be looking for, or what I need to replace? Is there some sort of short? Is a connection poorly made? It's a brand new flex cable and the old one seemed to be doing the same, and I've double checked the connections and they seem to be fine.
If you have any ideas, I'm all ears, just about to tear apart the phone to check where it might be making shorts around that area! Thanks everyone!
Seemed to be an issue with the flex cable connecter to the motherboard. When I added pressure to the connector the screen would work, as I let off pressure the screen quit. I ended up adding a few layers of electrical tape to the back of the connector so when I put the backplate housing and cover back on it would add some pressure. Seems to be working great now (knock on wood).

Thats a common experience you had. The connection between the USB cable and the motherboard for some reason can go bad. I suspect overheating may be the primary cause. The careful placement of double stick electrica tape appears to help fix this problem. I had to do it myself. The speaker not working can be caused by poor connection to the USB flex cable. There is an excellent youtube by "LE55ONS" on the disassembly/assembley which shows everything in great detail. It's worth a look.
Glad you got everything working

Battery Problem, possible motherboard damage ?

Hi all
I have had my nexus 5 for a while now and just as i was flying overseas some strange things happened.
First the vibration stopped working which i knew was a loose connection on the back of the phone. Holding that area down would get it working again. Then the touch display stopped working. The LCD worked but could not touch anything to unlock the phone. I disassembled the phone and assembled it again and strangely it worked again although i didnt see anything obvious. Then is happened again...
I disassembled the phone and played around with it for a while and noticed if pressed down on the connection where the flex cable connects to the motherboard it would work again. but when i would release the pressure it would be funny again. I did this a number of times until eventually the whole LCD/blacklight should shut off. Now i can rarely get it to display anything. The phone is working because the LED light would flash and i can hear the messaged coming through. I just cannot see anything.
I replaced the flex cable with a new one and still the same issue. I replaced the LCD + digitizer + frame and still the same issue. I guess its the motherboard. Can i fix this ??
Now for some more issues:
I bought a broken Nexus 5 while overseas and i swapped the motherboard out and everything works! So it as definitely the motherboard. However, the second motherboard is having issued the the battery. I have every indication the battery is charging. However the battery percentages is stuck on 40%. It would flicker around 39% 40% instantly and when looking at the battery graph on the phone it is noisy, it is not a constant line. The percentage is not a true indication of the battery charge. I cannot get the phone to turn on just by the battery itself no matter how long i charge it for. I have swapped batteries out and i still get the same issue. I have swapped flex cables and still the same issue. Could it be that the second motherboard is also damaged??
I used the amphere app for a while while i had some power and it shows 100mA while charging but a voltage of 0V! When I unplug the cable it will shutoff. Sometimes i cannot even boot it up while charging.
Amphere showing 1%

What is wrong with these two motherboards?! I do not see anything obvious on the board itself.
I now see the new Nexus 5X is out but i am hesitant in buying it...This is the first phone i have had major issues with.
PS, i gave the latest updated
Thanks for your help guys. I will provide whatever information i can.
It sounds like your 1st phone is having the same problem I have with mine, which is described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/main-board-socket-flex-cable-super-t3217281
Use a magnifying glass to see if any pins on the socket are broken. I still don't know if it's fixable.
