Hi guys, newbie here, and im in desperate need of your help!
So I decided to buy an Note 10.1 and yesterday I received it. Straight away (after turning on) I noticed this rather irritating noise (like a notification sound but not one that is the ringtones options on the tablet) that the tablet made when I held it with one hand well, at first I thought it was a motion gesture since whenever I hold it with one hand (the right hand) it switches to the previous app if your in an app, or previous Web page when surfing the net. So I searched the options 100 times, and nothing to toggle off.
Anyway it bugged me more and more and I couldn't figure it out, then by chance i just pushed slightly on the back of the tablet and the notification noise goes off. Push again, it happens again. I decided that it could be a loose connection being made and remade every time I decompress the right side back panel (I can play it like a piano). So I took the back panel off (a pain in the ****) and noticed a ribbon cable that runs directly where I push the back panel (the S pen sensor cable). It was plugged in correctly, but wasn't taped to the battery like the 2 fatter ribbon cables.
So, I taped it down thinking that me pushing the back panel was moving it and creating a loose connection. I thought I had solved it. Booted it back up, no sound!!!!! Reinstalled the back panel, booted again and BOOM, the sound returns.......
Gutted.
Not sure what to do next, it definitely sounds as if something is disconnecting and reconnecting like a USB on a PC, im getting the sound but no notification or error. I have no idea why this would make an app switch to the previous app or webpage when on net.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Well, it seems I have solved the issue. Since this is a new account, I can't post youtube videos. So I'll leave those out for the time being.
Firstly, heres a video showing the fault. As you can see, I've narrowed it down to the docking station/charger connector.
The ribbon cable was seemingly depressed causing it to disconnect briefly before reconnecting when released. Probably the down side of having a flimsy plastic case.
Solve the issue I removed the ribbon cable and taped a small amount of foam right at the mouth of the connector, making the whole connection sturdier and harder to depress with the cover on, which can be seen here.
Hopefully this helps anyone who finds themselves with a similar issue.

Yep, if the problem isn't fixed there's no way it'll get fixed under warranty now...
If the device is less than a week old, in Oz, the shop is supposed to replace the device immediately. This doesn't mean they won't try the old "It'll take 2 weeks to fix" and "It has to be sent back for repairs" schtick....

I got it from Ebay, although it was listed as new/unused.

I was upset, could not handle life anymore. I was at work and just threw my phone with tremendous force into the wall. Made hole in drywall but phone remained in tact. Nothing seemed broken.
I live in a 3G area but not it never displays the 3G icon, infact most of the time it displays the roaming icon. My calls are always getting dropped. The internet on the phone no longer works.
I tried to reset the phone, and did a rom update with a rom I found here. Did update successful but no luck. Then re did a rom update with the latest one from the HTC website.
Same problem persists. How can I know what component is damaged and where can I get the part to fix it?
When I had a HTC tilt, I sat on my phone and broke the screen, was able to get replacement unit and change it myself with ease.
I would like to thank you all in advanced and hope you all have a wonderful day.
Study here how to dismantle the device and what the components are
Dude, some therapy may help....got insurance, do that and get a replacement phone
having taken mine apart, if it looks like it's still in one piece, the thing that jumps immediately to mind is just that your antenna got loose. it's the only thing pretty much with an exposed connector that could pop off. (the display may be able to also, but you'd notice that =)
search for the raphael service manual, only tricky part in getting to the antenna is after you pop the back housing loose on the top 3 sides, you have to pull back the top far/hard enough that you think you're gonna break the usb port to get the housing free of it. Pull it back a bit, unplug that speaker wire, then pull it back some more, needs a gap at the top of about 2 inches to clear the bottom usb port. it'll just click and snap free. i took 30 minutes doing it cuz i thought i was gonna break it.
After having a duff sd slot on my original surface my replacement arrived today, all good, left it doing updates and installing my apps for a while, all was well, or so I thought..
The keyboard is now not responding after a while, connected, works, close the cover, open it again, screen doesn't come on, press power button screen comes on, keyboard not responding, close cover, screen stays active, disconnect keyboard and reconnect it and it works again..
Had a quick look through the settings and there's nothing I can see that relates to keyboard sleep or power management..
Tried it on my old surface and its fine :\
Wondering if anyone has seen or heard anything similar, otherwise another tech chat with support tomorrow...
You might want to try rebooting the new Surface, and make sure the connection port where the cover links up is clean, but otherwise I don't know what would cause that problem. I've had cases where the cover wasn't recognized, but disconnecting and reconnecting it fixed that.
Only issue I ever have with the cover is if I remove it while the tablet is sleeping and when it wakes it thinks it is still attached.
It's been rebooted many times so dont think its that, had a poke thru device managet last night and looked for power saving stuff but nothing relavant..
Connectors are all clean and it works in the old Surface.. :/
Maybe the keyboards just missing the tablet it came with lol
Still nothing, hard reset, power offs nothing, have now noticed that the edges of the touch cover are peeling apart at the corners so might get this replaced as well, so far the support guys have been spot on, the device however while really promising just lacks finish :\

Two options....
1. Return the cover..
2. Bring your surface bad cover to Microsoft store and let them figure out what is wrong...
I am very happy with my surface and the touch cover...
I have a 5 second delay sometimes when opening and closing. Otherwise, ref let msft know

I've had 2 bad units now, don't think its the cover as it worked on the first surface before I returned it.
I'll get onto surface support when they are back, I don't seem to be able to raise a ticket on the new unit, touch cover might end up going back as well at this rate...

I've had the same issue with the type cover. Sometimes it works fine throughout. Other times it seems to fall asleep until an adjustment is made.
I've caught the connection off by a few millimeters at times (although that doesn't explain why the initial connection would work), but you can look and check for that as well.
From now on I'll simply restart from the Power button without removing the connection to see if it's really a 100% mechanical issue.
Ha I've had all of these problems you've named
On Live Chat with support now, the MS forums seem to suggest a reset, I've tried it a few times tho, will see if they will fire out another cover..
Right, cover is being swapped out on AR as well now, hope they hurry up and take the hold off the card though, the hold is for more than it would cost to actually buy the bloody thing new again..
So I've been having a ton of issues with my phone lately, to the point I can't use it anymore. I'll list them in case they may show what the problem is. First, the charging port went out. I swapped out for a new flex cable on ebay and all was well again. Next the speaker stopped working unless I would squeeze the bottom of the phone, and then stopped working completely (Not sure if this was the speaker itself or if it was making poor contact with the new flex cable.).
Up next, and the worst problem of all, is the screen stopped working intermittently. I seemed to be able to get it working better when I would squeeze the phone, which seemed strange to me. This kept happening until it stopped working altogether!
So, thinking it was the flex cable, I just swapped it for another new one from a different seller, and it still isn't working. If I reboot the phone the screen works perfectly fine unless I put light pressure on the back of the above the "s" in nexus, then the screen shuts off and won't come back on again until I restart the phone again. As soon as I reboot the phone the screen works great again until I tap that spot.
I'm a bit at a loss to what I should be looking for, or what I need to replace? Is there some sort of short? Is a connection poorly made? It's a brand new flex cable and the old one seemed to be doing the same, and I've double checked the connections and they seem to be fine.
If you have any ideas, I'm all ears, just about to tear apart the phone to check where it might be making shorts around that area! Thanks everyone!
Seemed to be an issue with the flex cable connecter to the motherboard. When I added pressure to the connector the screen would work, as I let off pressure the screen quit. I ended up adding a few layers of electrical tape to the back of the connector so when I put the backplate housing and cover back on it would add some pressure. Seems to be working great now (knock on wood).

Thats a common experience you had. The connection between the USB cable and the motherboard for some reason can go bad. I suspect overheating may be the primary cause. The careful placement of double stick electrica tape appears to help fix this problem. I had to do it myself. The speaker not working can be caused by poor connection to the USB flex cable. There is an excellent youtube by "LE55ONS" on the disassembly/assembley which shows everything in great detail. It's worth a look.
Glad you got everything working

I just dropped my P900 and it went completely dark. :crying: There's no mark, not a crack, nothing, but the display is completely dark. The touch buttons on each side of the home button lights up, but the display does not.
Any advice? Or it is Samsung support next?
May the ribbon for the display is disconnected from the circuit board.

Yeah, maybe I should open it myself and have a look. Are there any warranty seals that I will break if I pry it open? I have all the tools necessary, but are there any guides for opening the P900? I wouldn't want to break anything...

This is a video on replacing the battery but it helped me when I re-soldered the battery connection on mine.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeSG0hHpAG8
I've opened mine a few times and haven't noticed any specific seals but mine was refurbished to start with.
Also I have the proper tools but found a guitar pick was easier to use personally on this tablet.
Starting at the power port to remove the back made it a lot easier for me, its pretty hard to get anything between the back cover and the tablet in other areas.

This was indeed the problem! The connector has some kind of snap lock that had come loose. So easily fixed. Thanks for encouraging me to try to fix it myself. :good:
Glad I helped!
Sorry to hijack your thread but figured my problem might be related.
About 2 weeks ago I charged my tablet and stored it away. The other day I tried to use it and it wouldn't turn on. I tried to charge it but that didn't work either as there isn't even charging activity on the screen. I ordered a replacement battery thinking it might be that, but I was wrong. I still can't make it turn on. Any ideas what it can be? Thanks

I had a similar experience. 3 weeks ago the 1x my SM P-900 is out of its protective case, it falls 2.5 ft off a table. Hits the floor. No visible cracks or breaks. I could hear hear it operating but the screen was black. Took 3 weeks to talk myself up to it but I pried off the back & used a magnifier glass to c.a.r.e.f.u.l.l.y check every ribbon connect. 1 connector's pins were very slightly off alignment. Couldnt find anything else. Put it back together...Yes! Screen works. All seems good. Took the back off again & securely taped over every ribbon connect I could find. Long time intermittent screen flicker issue (when battery was below 40%) also seems to be gone. That has been the best, eye squintin', back hunchin', shallow breathin', micro-screw wrangling, time investment my non-hardware tech self has ever spent. Wooo!
Hi everyone, I'm have an issue with my Nexus 5 and hoping someone here can tell me whats going on.
It started off with the sound always cutting out, and I have to press the back part near the "S" logo for it to return.
Eventually the screen would go black but I can clearly see a back light is on. Now not only does the sound cut out, and screen goes blank.
It has become very sluggish to reboot it. I hold the power button until the phone reboots "Google" logo appears and the android animation. Now during this time the phone will be so slow to the point of being crippled out and i have to reboot it again and again until it is normal speed returns. Often it will black out during this time.
I'm just trying to understand what is failing. I tried safe-mode and it still has the issue. I cleared cache, reset the phone everything, nothing appears to fix the issue at all.
edit: I forgot to add, when I'm on YT or listening to music or browsing the web, even though the screen is blank with just the back light on, the sound is still going (when it works). I get text/call notifications still during this time.
My Phone Details.

No replies at all, I guess I may have to garbage the phone. Idk what else to do with this device to fix it.
Please don't throw it away.
You said that pushing at a specific spot fixes the problem (or improves the audio situation). This means that it's a hardware problem. I have disassembled it many times and I know the layout. Behind the 'S' of NEXUS is actually the motherboard cover, and under it are 2 connectors; one for the battery and one for an extra 'board' that is located right underneath the LG logo on your back cover. On that 'board' is your screen connector, and also the speaker rests on there, as well as the primary microphone, 3G and 4G antennas and of course the USB port. The connector for this extra board is actually located a bit to the left on the 'S' (when you look at your phone from the back, it's more below the camera).
Now I have to note this: While using my phone, I have experienced some UI hiccups. At random times (very rarely) everything would just freeze for a few minutes, though music would still play. The power button was useless apart from the hard reset, it was so badly stuck. This was a software problem, although it appeared MOST at one point when my motherboard was faulty. Since I got a new device, it happened again but only once. I'm not sure that this is what you are experiencing. If this is the case, then it's a software fault. Never happened on CM so you can give it a try.
But since it's probably a hardware problem, you can always check it out yourself. Obviously if you have warranty you are covered. Otherwise, you can try disassembling it, at least take the back cover and the motherboard cover off, it's ridiculously easy, there is a disassembly guide from ifixit (I think) online, just be careful not to break the clips of the back cover (xp talking). If you open it, keep away metal things and the first thing you do after you remove the motherboard cover is remove the battery (xp talking again). Obviously turn off the phone properly before you attempt anything. Everything is sensitive in there so be careful. What you should look for is the long connector that connects the extra board that is located at the bottom of the phone with the motherboard. That's what you are pushing so if it's not sitting correctly, then that's your problem.
Plus, everything in there, apart from the motherboard, is cheap and can be found on eBay so don't worry if something is broken (unless it's the motherboard, then no hope ).
I hope I helped.
Firstly thanks for the reply. I did manage to remove the back and get to the connector you were saying. I reseated this and noticed the phone was working much better. I noticed the following still.
When it starts acting slow/crippled pressing this connector fixes the issue. However once the screen goes black with just a backlight this method is rendered useless. Also sometimes when I plug in the wire to charge it will cripple and or go black. So I wondering if the board is shot as you suggested to order a new one, or is it the connector strip ?
Again thank you for the response.
It seems like this board is causing everything. First, check the connector on the motherboard. Make sure that nothing is wrong on the motherboard. Then you can remove the bottom black plastic thing that has the speaker on it and 2 antennas. Then, inspect this board. Check the connector of the display. There is only one big connector on it. This board is glued on the frame of the phone. You can remove it but do it carefully. Do it slowly so that you don't break it. First, remove the antennas extension cables from either this board or the motherboard, and then pull it out.
This board is definately responsible for the black screens and audio issues (unless your display is faulty, check its connector), but I'm not sure about the phone being sluggish. Since this board offers input to the motherboard, I suppose that it could be its fault.
Remove it and inspect everything. Then, if you want, you can order a new one. If you come across D820 and D821 models, I don't think that this part of the phone has anything to do with it so don't worry.
I will take a further look into this for sure, and report back. If you can provide which motherboard is required for my device, so I can also read into this and so that I may order it right-away. Is there any model number or something that indicates which board to order once it is open?
Thanks again!

You don't need to change the motherboard, not to mention it's very expensive and hard to find. What you need to replace is probably the flex cable that goes below the battery. For example this.
This is not model specific, you can use it with all available Nexus 5 models (D820/D821, 16/32GB) so it doesn't matter what device you have.
FYI, if you think that you should replace your motherboard (you probably shouldn't), you need to take into account the storage (16/32GB) and the network differences (D820 or D821, the only difference is about the 4G networking, the american version has some bands enabled and some others disabled, and vice versa)
Okay, I just ordered the replacement flex cable. It is going to take about a month before it arrives from HK , I hope it fixes the issues. I will respond to this post once it is here and installed. Thanks again.

in the meantime, pray it isnĀ“t a motherboard issue, the conector can go bad and lose a few solder joints

Siamer no solution just waiting for my delivery of the part. However it is getting worse with the blackscreens and crippled lag.

my is the same. sometimes is working for few hours without any problems and than starting again, on the biggining it was power button problem but not I don't even touch that button (I use vol button to turn on) and sometimes screen getting black (with backlight on) and can't do anything so have to reboot... it's so anoying! Hope that parts will fix it, please let me know if you will find some solution. Today I will open phone and clean all connections etc...
Thanks,

I believe the part may fix it. I noticed if i run my finger along the strip the phone may uncripple itself or just turn black all together. I'm hoping it fixes it. I will report asap but this HK shipping is so slow it will be a month. Also there is no tracking
ATM i'am just trying to becareful with it trying not to trigger the issue. I just did an OTA update using FlashFire (6.0.1 (MOB31E) i wish v.7 will be available for my Nexus 5 ha ha!
Also if the Nexus 7p arrives I may just buy it to replace this Nexus5.

Hi Omega59.
Today I bought air compressed can(name: air dust) and open my nexus 5 as much as I could. I clean everything, every connector, every cable etc. and last few hours is working fine... even power button is working ok. I will let you know in next few hours how it will be, hope will be still ok
Good luck!

there is still same problem, working better than before, black screen not showing so often but still showing... I think tomorrow I will order oneplus3... Would be nice wait to see new nexus but how... :/
Yeah I'm not sure when the Nexus 7p will arrive, they not even advertised much. I will assume next year?
OnePlus 3 looks nice, but compared to Galaxy 7 it's a bit better slightly. You should check out comparison charts
Maybe they are making a OnePlus 4 soon.
oneplus 3 already ordered. I don't like samsung. I would say nexus "7p" or "pixel xl" will be launch october as always prabaly 4th of october - leaks saing that... next oneplus will be launch around july next year as I know. the only phone that I was thinking about was oneplus, htc10 or new nexus but can't wait to see nexus...
today by excident I broke screen in my nexus 5, got a little bit angry

You probably don't want to hear this, but if it's getting worse, it's probably because of the pressure you apply to it, you make it worse. Be careful when you apply pressure around the motherboard since it's very sensitive. You REALLY don't want to break the motherboard. So if you find yourself pushing on the motherboard too often, you might want to leave it and wait for the replacement part so you won't ruin it.
Waiting for your news...
My part arrived yesterday. I put it in was pretty easy, however the first attempt i had to redo the top connector bc it was still black screen and no audio. After I disconnected the top connector ran some alcohol over it, re-put the top part things are working okay.
Just a note, the little USB connector (charger slot) seems to be very tight compared to the old one. Maybe bc it's new and not as worn down. But even just to put the wire in, requires more of a push, same with removing it.
I will see how it goes before I can really say that was the issue. I will report after a few days about it.

I don't think N7P will be out this year, they have not advertised anything and we are almost in Oct. Right now they are all rumors.

When I changed my screen and housing it was difficult to slide the USB connector in too. Just make sure that everything is in place, there is a rubber think for the microphone, maybe that's what's in the way. Don't stress the connector too much.
