[Q] Rooting voids what warranty? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

OK guys, so I know that rooting your Skyrocket voids the warranty, but I've been looking around on the net and I've seen some phones that when you root, the warranty only no longer covers things directly involved with the rooting, for example, bricking, uninstalling system apps, getting infected by virus/malware etc. So the question is, does this apply to the Skyrocket?
Simplifed: Does rooting the Skyrocket make it so that if I were to drop my phone, screen cracks, and I send it in, will Samsung just throw it away? Or is it just that if I root my phone, brick it, send it in, THEN they throw it away?
Thanks in advance guys!
BTW Skyrocket is awesome phone

Odds are they won't even know unless your flash counter is higher than 0 in download mode. Even then, they still probably wouldn't notice.
Note: When I wrote this, I assumed we were talking hard-brick. Goes without saying that yes, if your phone boots up and they can see it's not stock, your warranty is voided.

If they can prove that it's been rooted, they won't even touch it. You'll be responsible for the full replacement cost.
If they can't prove that it's rooted (won't turn on and needs a software restore to get it working again) then it's up to whomever is looking at the phone to determine if they will cover the replacement under warranty.
Please note - I've had a rooted device that was replaced under warranty, but only because it would not boot up at all and so it could not be proven that it was rooted.

So then, say, I dropped my phone on a rock, and it could boot up, but there was nothing caused by the software itself that went wrong, they wouldn't even touch it?

Everything is void. You have to flash back to stock to get it fixed.

Not free. You will have to pay a deductible. You should read your paperwork and know what you signed up for.

I know, I just thought maybe there was a different plan.

Best buy black tie plan is much better IMO. Little bit more expensive, but no deductible and no limit to replacements. I got a replacement for mine, no questions asked.

I don't even touch warranties. They're expensive and almost always useless. If my phone is severely damaged somehow, it can be restored to stock and bricked in Kies whether the screen works or not.
Now, in terms of drops...let's just say I'm very careful not to develop butter fingers...

Will Samsung fix bricked Skyrocket within warranty without question?

Has anyone bricked their Skyrocket after rooting it, sent it back to Samsung, and had luck? I imagine they have so many phones coming in/out that they might not check. Ultimately, just hooking it up to their JTAG unit and reflashing it.
But, I'd like to know if anyone has had any experiences with this.
If you search answers will come I suggest something about bricked phones

k, thanks. So it seems like they will replace them. I'm wondering if I should say that Kies died during an update or if it just died and won't power on.
Battery on your comp died or you dog tugged on the cable mid update

bricked mine. wouldnt even turn on. couldnt get recovery or download mode. sent it to samsung and they marked it as a faulty pcb and replaced it.
Be very very careful when your flashing. Don't flash in a thunder storm, in a car, or while your moving. Make sure your phone, your computer are charged. Make sure your USB ports work your cables are good. Make sure not to move your phone, hold your phone while its flashing. Be sure to read and read again before you flash.
Check double check every file. Make sure your downloads complete, make sure its for your phone. Read other post and learn from them. And you won't have another bricked phone.

Hard bricked mine the other day. Went to at&t said it turned off when I plugged it in and they gave me a new one right away.

Just came back from At&t Device Support Center and they fixed my bricked Skyrocket in less then 10 minutes. The chick giggled when she saw it was rooted and said I shouldn't do it anymore. LOL. If you're under warranty still, go to your local center. Maybe they'll fix it even if it isn't under warranty. Might depend on the person though.

Just went through the process here myself. ATT will replace if under warranty. They asked if I'd gotten it wet or dropped it - no questions about flashing custom ROM - especially the wrong custom ROM : )
Good luck

going to see will they take mines and switch it out the same day, I bought my skyrocket with broke screen from my friend, he said he accidently kept the phone old one, so I bought it for a reasonable price, if they take a look at the IMEI will they say something about it being not sent back, I mean I been using it for awhile now, I say about 2 or 3 months. Hopefully they'll switch it without problems or asking for my account, but some how I know they will what do yall think?

How to brick a onex

This may sound strange...but i need to find a way to brick my phone so that not even the bootloader will work.
i tried flashing different roms from different phones but everything seems to have a script to check phone models now so it wont let me flash.
i also tried to wipe everything, cache, system and stuff and force rebooting, doesnt work either.
any ideas?
May I ask why you want to do this?

My earpiece volume is very low to the point i cant hear anyone while walking on the street.
i borrowed my sisters onex and hers was totally fine.
i have a service plan through futureshop but they wont take it back if i modified it (they are smart enough to check bootloader which says tampered and stuff all over it)
so in order for me to fix it/get a new one i have to brick it to the point where they cant even see the tampering

His earpiece is defective. If he had not installed a ROM he would have been able to get a replacement. I dont think he should be punished for flashing a ROM by being forced to keep an already detective device.

I've discussed this many times, unlocking your bootloader does NOT void your warranty.
HTC says it MAY void your warranty.
Flash a ruu and send it back would be the ethical way to go. They don't check the bootloader, they probably send it to HTC or some sort of repair center.
Me personally I would brick it to reduce the chance of them trying to stick me with the cost of the phone. But I wouldnt tell anyone

Actually yes this problem happened after root/bootloader unlock
I am not the only one with this problem and it hasnt been the first phone ive had with this problem either
It was fine for a couple of months and then it was on and off, sometimes the volume will be normal in calls and sometimes it wont
then it just fully dies and stays a low volume
had the exact same problem with my evo3d and xperia arc

Wouldn't a bricked device be more suspicious than a defective earpiece? What would be the situation you could brick a device without unlocking the bootloader, or using a microwave? They can verify the earpiece is bad. I have some sort of defect with the screen, like a scratch or smudge between the LCD and the glass. I was just going to send it back with the bl relocked. But, my new one came with 2.20 already on it. So, I sent it back and will try again later for another, or if an exploit is found for 2.20, or take them up on the early upgrade GS III offer.
How bad is the earpiece issue? Worse than running stock sense? You may want to wait until you get a replacement to decide what to do.

When you call into AT&T ask for the number to the warranty department. They will ask you a few questions to determine if that's the right department you are looking for. Just say you charged your phone and it no longer turns on. Eventually after lying a bit more you will have a replacement device on its way to you. Works for me all the time and have never failed yet.
They say all kind of things to scare you out of it, but nothing ever happens. I don't know if it is just my luck. I warranty at least 3 times for the year just to keep my phone looking brand new and I send it in working perfectly fine.

Lol thanks rapstar I can definitely give it a shot. Here my thing jyazzie that your correct they don't warranty hardware breaking so by my son dropping the phone voided the warranty. But here my thing I have had other providers and they always warrantied at least one accidental replacement and for 199 I could just go and buy something else like a galaxy note. But seriously 199 for a phone that is on the do not sell list lol. Thank you all for the help and feed back. But I'll see if my work will let me get one temporarily.

I'd try to brick it through Kies, tbqh. Can be done without the screen on if you restore to 2.3 in ODIN. It's a risk that they see the digitizer and have a "WTF" moment, but you stand a good chance of getting away with saying, "I did the upgrade through Kies and now it doesn't work."

Indeed. I actually had Samsung replace my screen when I broke the glass a few months ago. They charged me 158 and they covered shipping both ways. I had the phone back in 8 days. Since they did the work it is still under warranty if anything else should go wrong. It was actually cheaper than any of the glass/digitizer units I could find online.

[Q] Flashed Wrong Rom

Well I accidentally flashed a GS3 rom on my skyrocket and I'm pretty sure its bricked. The phone stays black and doesn't appear to power on at all. I am unable to get into recovery or download mode to flash in odin. The flash was a clean install and I had formatted both my emmc and usb mounts.
My question is should I bother taking it in to att or will they know that I've had it rooted? Or should I just bite the bullet and send it in for a jtag and pay around $70?
If it won't power on it could be any number of things from AT&T's perspective. It's worth a shot to see what they say.

warranty it, just play stupid and say it wont turn on and you dont know why, and dont mention anything about flashing a rom
Definitely a hard brick. I'd take it to AT&T first, tell them you were in the middle of the firmware update (act dumb) and the phone just turned off and wouldn't turn back on. I've heard stories (see edit below) of AT&T-owned stores calling corporate for guidance as AT&T's update was implicated, then just pulling out a new phone and handing it over well after the 14/30 days are up. More likely, they'll refer you to Sammy to have it warrantied out. Nothing to lose by trying at least the AT&T store first, as a one-day turnaround and free replacement is a better deal than waiting for Sammy to do their thing and send you a refurb, or spending the money on JTAG.
Edit: Stories. That's it. Haven't seen it happen. Your mileage may vary.
Thanks everyone. I'll head to att tomorrow and give it a shot. Will report back with outcome.
Take it to att if its still under warranty and play dumb. If it won't turn on they won't know its rooted or other ROMs have been put on. I'm sending this from a phone that was replaced under the same circumstances you're in:thumbup:

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately I am out of warranty. I've had the phone for almomst a year now.
If it's under a year you're OK. Mine had a month to go. Got a 90 day warranty on the new phoneso got a two month extended warranty with the new phone

Nice! Out of curiosity, what did you say? Turned off and won't turn back on? You can answer via PM if you think they might see or anything.
That's it. They tried to turn it on, called a tech guy, still couldn't get download mode and that was it. Just don't talk and use short answers to the questions. Take the sd card out, of course. They send a refurb'd phone, less the back and battery. You then send the old phone back in a prepaid envelope that comes with the re furb. Pretty painless

Exactly. I told them it froze up during the official update and wouldn't turn back on. Just played stupid. The funny thing is that I accidentally left my sd card in it and I know that I had a folder on there named "rom_flashing" lol. I got very nervous when they saw the sd card, swapped it in the new phone and booted it up. I told them I was in a hurry and took the phone then bounced out. :good:

Sending non stock phone back to Verizon

Has anyone done this for a warranty replacement and got away with it?
I am having hardware issues and cannot get back to stock.

I'd suggest hard bricking it first. When the s3 first came out I flashed an incorrect zip file and almost instantly found myself with a totally lifeless phone. I took it in to Verizon and convinced the guy there that it just stopped working and I played dumb about why. He tried to charge it for a while and see if that helped and of course nothing happened, so then he pronounced it dead and ordered a replacement phone totally under warranty. Good luck, lol

Interesting world where people openly discuss committing Felony Fraud and Conspiricy to Commit Felony Fraud but discussing pirating a $.99 piece of software isn't allowed. LOL :silly:
