Will Samsung fix bricked Skyrocket within warranty without question? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Has anyone bricked their Skyrocket after rooting it, sent it back to Samsung, and had luck? I imagine they have so many phones coming in/out that they might not check. Ultimately, just hooking it up to their JTAG unit and reflashing it.
But, I'd like to know if anyone has had any experiences with this.

If you search answers will come I suggest something about bricked phones

k, thanks. So it seems like they will replace them. I'm wondering if I should say that Kies died during an update or if it just died and won't power on.

Battery on your comp died or you dog tugged on the cable mid update

bricked mine. wouldnt even turn on. couldnt get recovery or download mode. sent it to samsung and they marked it as a faulty pcb and replaced it.

Be very very careful when your flashing. Don't flash in a thunder storm, in a car, or while your moving. Make sure your phone, your computer are charged. Make sure your USB ports work your cables are good. Make sure not to move your phone, hold your phone while its flashing. Be sure to read and read again before you flash.
Check double check every file. Make sure your downloads complete, make sure its for your phone. Read other post and learn from them. And you won't have another bricked phone.

Hard bricked mine the other day. Went to at&t said it turned off when I plugged it in and they gave me a new one right away.

Just came back from At&t Device Support Center and they fixed my bricked Skyrocket in less then 10 minutes. The chick giggled when she saw it was rooted and said I shouldn't do it anymore. LOL. If you're under warranty still, go to your local center. Maybe they'll fix it even if it isn't under warranty. Might depend on the person though.

Just went through the process here myself. ATT will replace if under warranty. They asked if I'd gotten it wet or dropped it - no questions about flashing custom ROM - especially the wrong custom ROM : )
Good luck

going to see will they take mines and switch it out the same day, I bought my skyrocket with broke screen from my friend, he said he accidently kept the phone old one, so I bought it for a reasonable price, if they take a look at the IMEI will they say something about it being not sent back, I mean I been using it for awhile now, I say about 2 or 3 months. Hopefully they'll switch it without problems or asking for my account, but some how I know they will what do yall think?

The imei is the first thing they look at, as that is how they tell if it's under warranty or not. Send it for jtag, about 50 bucks.

if you are hellbent on bricking your phone, flash this ICS:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522023
if it works, we will all be very appreciative of your testing.
if you brick your phone, then mission accomplished.
I do remember when I bought my skyrocket at the retail store. When asked if I wanted insurance on it, I remember the sales person telling me all of the things that are covered, and one thing I remember was that he said even if I ran over it with my car, it would still be covered.
Anyone know how they handle "lost" phones? I know they can turn the phone on and locate it, but what if you pull the battery and "lose" it. AT&T insurance which is actually a 3rd party, will send you a replacement phone overnight and request you send the damaged one back unless it was lost or stolen.
flash stock rom for skyrocket in odin and check repartition, this is a GUARANTEE brick
Remove battery . Plug aligator clips on pos and neg of car bat. With leads .touch both leads to phones battery connection

you have to file a police report and pay the replacement fee to get a replacement. mine was like $50 bucks. The phone company then Flags the phone as stolen, I'm assuming by IMEI or ESN, Of course this was for an actually stolen phone. but if it turned up again i'd assume you have a great Dev device for testing.

[Q] Rooting voids what warranty?

OK guys, so I know that rooting your Skyrocket voids the warranty, but I've been looking around on the net and I've seen some phones that when you root, the warranty only no longer covers things directly involved with the rooting, for example, bricking, uninstalling system apps, getting infected by virus/malware etc. So the question is, does this apply to the Skyrocket?
Simplifed: Does rooting the Skyrocket make it so that if I were to drop my phone, screen cracks, and I send it in, will Samsung just throw it away? Or is it just that if I root my phone, brick it, send it in, THEN they throw it away?
Thanks in advance guys!
BTW Skyrocket is awesome phone
Odds are they won't even know unless your flash counter is higher than 0 in download mode. Even then, they still probably wouldn't notice.
Note: When I wrote this, I assumed we were talking hard-brick. Goes without saying that yes, if your phone boots up and they can see it's not stock, your warranty is voided.
If they can prove that it's been rooted, they won't even touch it. You'll be responsible for the full replacement cost.
If they can't prove that it's rooted (won't turn on and needs a software restore to get it working again) then it's up to whomever is looking at the phone to determine if they will cover the replacement under warranty.
Please note - I've had a rooted device that was replaced under warranty, but only because it would not boot up at all and so it could not be proven that it was rooted.

I don't even touch warranties. They're expensive and almost always useless. If my phone is severely damaged somehow, it can be restored to stock and bricked in Kies whether the screen works or not.

[Q] Flashed Wrong Rom

Well I accidentally flashed a GS3 rom on my skyrocket and I'm pretty sure its bricked. The phone stays black and doesn't appear to power on at all. I am unable to get into recovery or download mode to flash in odin. The flash was a clean install and I had formatted both my emmc and usb mounts.
My question is should I bother taking it in to att or will they know that I've had it rooted? Or should I just bite the bullet and send it in for a jtag and pay around $70?
If it won't power on it could be any number of things from AT&T's perspective. It's worth a shot to see what they say.

warranty it, just play stupid and say it wont turn on and you dont know why, and dont mention anything about flashing a rom
Definitely a hard brick. I'd take it to AT&T first, tell them you were in the middle of the firmware update (act dumb) and the phone just turned off and wouldn't turn back on. I've heard stories (see edit below) of AT&T-owned stores calling corporate for guidance as AT&T's update was implicated, then just pulling out a new phone and handing it over well after the 14/30 days are up. More likely, they'll refer you to Sammy to have it warrantied out. Nothing to lose by trying at least the AT&T store first, as a one-day turnaround and free replacement is a better deal than waiting for Sammy to do their thing and send you a refurb, or spending the money on JTAG.
Edit: Stories. That's it. Haven't seen it happen. Your mileage may vary.
Thanks everyone. I'll head to att tomorrow and give it a shot. Will report back with outcome.
Take it to att if its still under warranty and play dumb. If it won't turn on they won't know its rooted or other ROMs have been put on. I'm sending this from a phone that was replaced under the same circumstances you're in:thumbup:

Nice! Out of curiosity, what did you say? Turned off and won't turn back on? You can answer via PM if you think they might see or anything.
That's it. They tried to turn it on, called a tech guy, still couldn't get download mode and that was it. Just don't talk and use short answers to the questions. Take the sd card out, of course. They send a refurb'd phone, less the back and battery. You then send the old phone back in a prepaid envelope that comes with the re furb. Pretty painless

Exactly. I told them it froze up during the official update and wouldn't turn back on. Just played stupid. The funny thing is that I accidentally left my sd card in it and I know that I had a folder on there named "rom_flashing" lol. [Q] Bricked? Can't enter download mode

I just tried flashing to the latest slim bean rom and when I went to reboot, the phone turned off. Can't turn it back on, can't get into download mode with the USB cable, battery out/anything. Is there anything I can do at this point? IT seems completely dead. Doesn't even show a charging icon when I plug it into the charger. I've had problems before but I've at least been able to get into download mode.
Any suggestions??
Doesn't sound good. You have no life at all in the phone? If not you're hard bricked and jtag is your only hope. You sure you flashed to correct Rom for your device?

Thanks for all your help. I actually have an extended warranty, but they wanted to charge me $200 for a replacement (which would probably end up being a refurb anyway). I sent it out to mobiletechvideos today and I'm hoping to have my phone back by the end of the next week. Better make sure I double-check what I'm flashing next time
Another side question - I tried flashing a few ROMs but I got errors during the flash (CM10, CM9) Do I need to have a specific bootloader enabled for those?

Another side question - I tried flashing a few ROMs but I got errors during the flash (CM10, CM9) Do I need to have a specific bootloader enabled for those?

No. Don't have to worry about boot loaders on the i727. Just make sure the Rom is for it. As you learned, flashing a rom for a different device is not a good thing. Good luck on the jtag.
Read vincoms stickies in the development forum. They have good information on flashing. There is a lot of info there so its not an easy read but they'll save you a lot of headaches of you go thru them.
Edit: what recovery were you using to flash? If you were having problems out its probably an older version. Check that you have the latest. I've had good luck with twrp 2.4.4.0

no dice, completely dead. Im not getting a charge indicator or anything.
How did this device get to this state? Are you sure the charging circuit isn't blown?

Nope, Ill tell you what happened. I have been having problems with the evolution mods kernel rebooting my phone, after i tried the "fixed" version.
So i flashed the full firmware from the 1.55.602 update (im running a stock rom with bloating removed) and i removed the hboot from the zip. Since im running a custom hboot with the text removed. Thinking i could just reflash the stock kernel.
i flashed it, did a fastboot reboot and now its deader than a hammer.
no charge, no usb activity, no turn on. dead as can be. Ill take any and all suggestions. I know my way around pretty well, so im surprised that its bricked. But its the first M8 brick, unless someone has a clever idea?

In other news, i got a new phone, so i have brick with a good esn if anyine is interested, but i would rather find someone who would be willing to try and jtag it for the good of the community
My condolences on the device, but you sir should be applauded for not going the route of "warranty" on a device that died by your hand. Does seem odd that you can't even get it to charge though.
Sent it to HTC to get fixed out of warranty. I let everyone know what they charge to unbrick. Besides, they would have figured it out anyways then charged me

It's super bricked. I flash firmware on single board computers at my job for medical equipment. We have bricks occasionally. But we can jtag out of it. I assume the same can be done if there is a header location available on the processor board. Couldn't find anybody who has jtagd one yet to do it.

HTC doesn't bother to jtag. They just replace the motherboard.

You think this would be worth anything for a dev to be able to figure it out, repair wise?

Yeah I'd be happy to take a look at it to see if there are any opportunities for software-based unbrick.

well, its at HTC (en route) right now. It should get there wed/thurs. If i get a bad case of sticker shock, illl get it sent back. If they can fix it for reasonable, then i will get it fixed. I am a big fan of your effort to free these android devices. So if they want too much, id be happy to send it to you. Maybe you can prevent the next one from occuring. BTW firewater is an amazing piece of work, i must say

No worries, hopefully you can get it fixed reasonable. Kudos for being honest about it, most people would claim warranty.
Actually I dont mind buying devices. Just for something like this I wouldnt feel good intentionally bricking a $600 device. I do it enough on accident

So i had edged up from my M7, ended up selling that for 400. Got the M8, had 2 payments made, bricked it. So i had to pay off the 500 on the edge. Now whats interesting if you early payoff the edge, you are out of contract, COMPLETELY. So i ended up with a free standard upgrade, so i was able to edge again. thats a FYI if anyone is interested. Kinda sucks, but i made my money back already fixing computers this week. Any idea what i did wrong, i have flashed M7 & M8's & DNA's so many times....I know my way around. Im still baffled
