Random Reboots - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So after the JB update I too had the random reboots while in the dock and charging I did all the usual, and cold reboots etc etc, but after reading in Atrix about there issues with ICS custom roms where it was noted that reboots stopped if you removed you external memory (or any memory cards come to that)
So I tried it, and now it doesnt do random reboots.....not sure if this will help anyone but might just make one irritation go away

Can you give more informations, please.
What's model ?
If it's a TG, the better solution for you, it's to contact ASUS for an exchange.
You're not alone => Census TF300TG / TL 3G failed

it's the TF300t just normal bog standard machine, not rootd or unlocked, happened after the JB update, reported it in the JB issues thread, but wrote this after testing it after reading about the Atrix's similar issues after a custom ICS....
Since removing the sd cards from both dock and pad not had any more random re-boots, will try to see if it's one or other of the slots causing it.

I'll have to test this out since I have 2 MicroSD cards inserted into my TF300T right now with the newest JB release. It appears that my tablet is having the same issues as I've seen with custom ROMs on phones with too much running the background. I wish I had root, since I could trim what apps are running but that'll have to wait for later.

The best you can do it's to installed the new kernel that you will find in my index (click in my sig )
Apparently it could solve the problem with these random reboots

Thanks. I'll verify that I have the same kernel version as v10.4.2.17, which I updated to recently. I've read that a lot of people have issues with the power button, but since I don't, I believe that it is something within JB. The odd part is that I've seen this exact same issue in Android since 2.2. Maybe its my power user ways...

This drove me crazy on my TF101... so I gave up and got the TF300T. After the first day it started random rebooting.... I was PISSED!!! :crying: After searching for and answer I came across a thread on another forum that suggested a fix was to install an app called "WakeLock" and set it to "Partial" .... 2 months later not one single reboot since I installed it. :good:

OCing can make a reboot happen due to overheating. Have you tried just doing stock speed?

I had reboots all the time when the dock was connected. I updated to the latest firmware two days ago and have not rebooted since. I also installed WakeLock set on partial and it seems to help.

DATA2SD beta for Supernova Xtreme development and support

The thread should handle support/development regarding the beta versions of Data2sd released for Supernova, StarBurst and GingerBurst Roms
The name says it all. Queries and support requests regarding Sibere's newly posted Beta version of Data2sd should be posted here. The stable version is rock solid, so let's try to solve the issues faced by the minority of users here.
Remember:
Flashable Getlogs output is a must
Adb logcat is a must
Good idea deciding to split the two
30k lines now on my log.txt file, and still no random reboot. I swear this phone has a mind of its own lol...

Maybe..or maybe while waiting for the reboot, you're failing to do something which earlier precipitated the reboot!
You know that you guys asked for this, right?
Are the reboots only due to the beta script?
Because my phone has been running for few days non stop now with my beta script

Hahaha... I'm totally loving the ROM though. Blazing fast, so I'm not giving up!!
The restarts happened at the randomest times. A few times when the phone had multiple processes working at once (when syncing contacts, receiving txt and email), and a few times it just happens when the phone is idle.
I think I'll leave the phone plugged in with adb logcat running Hopefully a restart occurs in my sleep lol...
Apologies in advance if my log.txt file is HUUUUGE tomorrow

I would assume so?
I can't really comment on and rebooting experience(s) before the beta script, as I never had enough patience to leave the phone as it is with the stable script. I've tried 3 different SD cards and it's all been extremely laggy on the stable script.
The beta script is a breath of fresh air in terms of lag (there's virtually NONE). The random reboots is the only issue I have (albeit a big one)
@Sibere, there was someone else on my forum who was telling me about reboots.. Unfortunately he too hasnt given logcats

Yeah. He also said he experienced two more restarts in the space of half and hour (or something) after flashing the bootflasher.zip you uploaded.
Bear with me guys, I should have a logcat ready for you two hopefully by tomorrow That's IF my phone decides to restart overnight.
I'm gonna head off to bed. Thanks a lot for all your patience and help. The lag is solved, so this is looking promising (for me and my 3 SD cards at least)

Remember to post your log on pastebin. Its impossible to post big files here
90 thousand lines of code later, I still haven't gotten a reboot.
Hopefully it happens today at work and I get a better idea as to how it happens
If it rebooted overnight whilst I was sleeping, logcat would have been stopped right? It doesn't keep going through a reboot?
UPDATE: Phone rebooted on its own about 8 times whilst I was driving to work. So ~8 reboots in a space of 40min.
Could it be a battery issue with the new Data2SD beta script? My battery's been drained from 100% fully charged to 85% now (because of the reboots), and I've noticed it's stopped rebooting (for now). Will keep you guys updated
UPDATE 2: Ok I lie. As soon as I edited my post above, the phone rebooted... :/
Rolling back to stock SuperNova 2.0.2.0. Phone is barely usable, rebooting every 5min lol... I wonder why it didn't reboot last night
I'll take a super laggy phone over one that keeps rebooting every chance it gets any day
The other guy rolled back and now found his problem solved, lol

Apparently he had reboots on beta, flashed the classic and found that he no longer had lags. Weird.
By the, were you by any chance using my track pad to unlock mod?

No, just the "trackpad to awake" that comes standard with SuperNova
Hmmm... So he didn't mean he wiped data/factory reset, flashed SuperNova Classic, then flashed the bootloader? Was about to give that a go lol.
@Sibere, I had some reboots today..
But the weird thing is I was on stable script, not beta. I had reverted two days ago..
Anyway I have logs to go through.. Pasting as I type
It may have been my card....or bad blocks..Hopefully not the latter! Wondering if I did the alignment wrongly.

Weird indeed. At least beta script can't be balmed this time
Try reverting to SB if you still have a backup. Maybe it's a kernel thing

Anyone know when the OTA will be out
Been trying different ROMs but then my phone started random rebooting even when I put it back to completely stock and re-locked it. So, I sent it in for replacement. Now my replacement phone at the top of the screen used to say "T-mobile" but now just reads "LG" on the glass. I guess the later phones were no longer branded T-mobile.
One thing I noticed though is when I put in a ROM that worked flawlessly on my old phone it would cause the replacement to have random reboots, force close, and just plain lock up where I would be required to remove/replace the battery to get it to work again. Any ideas or suggestions??? I have only been able to run the stock GB rom successfully.
Any ideas on what the phones issue may be?? Or maybe when the OTA for a stock ICS will be available?
Thanks,
NotinStock

1. why are you posting in this thread?
2. some roms/kernels are undervolted, if your phone cant handle it youll get random reboots.
3. nobody knows when ICS will get here, NOBODY. if anyone says they know when it will get here, they are lying. there are no exceptions, EVER!
Loving all the improvements that come with this update. I just installed AOKP build 31 and have had zero issues thus far. Just one thing missing...can't hangout in G+ and we know whose fault that is. Nvidia

Random Rebooting

So I've had my TF700 for almost a year now and I've always had a random reboot issue. Each patch would change, but recently I've upgraded to 4.1.1 Android version (Kernel: 3.1.10-0001) (Build: JRO03.us_epad-10.4.4.25-20121228) and have noticed that the tablet seems sluggish and I'm getting more reboots. Normally if I just read or websurf it wasn't bad. After about a week or so of constant use it would freeze or reboot.
However after the upgrade I've started playing a few games and the device seems to crawl when switching from one app to another (even in performance mode) and the reboots come randomly.
Is there any advice? Should I take it back to bestbuy and trade it in while it is still under warranty?

If you're not into rooting/custom rom etc. which will voids your warranty, you should take it back and exchange for another device like Samsung, nexus etc.., but not another tf700.

Due to Asus's design issue (slow flash memory was installed cause I/O bottle neck), it's not running well with stock rom. If you willing to unlock your device to use custom rom/kernel which make your device fast and smooth but will voids warranty. If you hold on to stock rom, you will be very frustrating about the slowness, stuttering and freezing. With tf700, if an app freeze or or hang (due to I/O poor design issue) will cause your device to reboot. Also a high percentage of hardware defects are to be considered, you better off go with Samsung or Nexus.

The answer is yes and no. There are multiple issues related to random rebooting. Possible reasons: JB software bug, bad apps, wifi driver and hardware. You won't know until you try to fix it. That's is why I recommend not to dive in since you already see "issue" with a brand new device. The risk is on your side more than the good.

Are there any particular tablets out there that somebody would recommend? I'm not a big fan of the Nexus, as nice as it is. I am kind of attached to my SD cards.
To be honest, there really isn't a good alternative if you want the keyboard-dock option.
Also, I'd be willing to bet that most TF700 owners don't have "random" reboots.
However, before unlocking your device, please tell us a little more about your setup - do you have tons of apps installed? What about apps like System Tuner? I'd recommend running as close to stock as possible (least apps installed) and see if the reboots still occur.
Just to clarify, you've had random reboots from day one of owning the device?

Just to add my two cents....
I bought a TF700 last summer. It was fine until the latest round of OTA upgrades from Asus in November or December; then I started getting random reboots as well, and the tablet became slow as a slug in molasses even in performance mode (which I have to set as soon as I boot in order to even get minimally-acceptable performance). I too hate to give up the keyboard and extra storage, but I have to admit this thing has been a disappointment.

Well the random reboots came after the second firmware upgrade. I kind of just figured that it had to deal with until the next firmware upgrade. I tend not to install a ton of applications on the device. I have the google apps (gmail, voice, talk, authenticator, drive, sky maps, skydrive, maps), Games (Rage of Bahamut, Transformers Legends, Tegra Zone), Books (Kindle, Adobe Reader, Comixology), Web (Youtube, Chrome, Netflix) and Kaspersky.
I have held off on the firmware upgrades until I was certain that there wouldn't be a major firmware upgrades coming down the line. The reboots weren't bad. Usually if I left the comixology, kindle, and ran mutliple games for a long time with the system would other slow down or lock up and I would just reboot. After this firmware it would just reboot if I opened a single app and shut off the screen. If it didn't reboot, when I unlocked the screen the device would just become incredibly slow.
I just got off the phone with Best Buy and they said the only thing I would be able to trade for is another TF700 with the warranty I have.

I would definitely not call random rebooting "normal" for the TF700. Obviously, there are some folks that are having issues with random reboots, but I think that is a very small percentage. To be honest, you can do a google search for just about any device + "random reboot" and you'll get results for almost every device known to mankind. I also believe that the problem can usually be fixed by starting clean and slowly introducing your needed apps. Yes, it's a pain in the a$$ and you shouldn't need to do it, but I truly believe that most of these issue can be fixed with a little effort.

First download Asus full frimware and unzip the zip file to the root of your microsdcard. Then go into settings -> backup and reset, tab on Factory data reset this will auto boot into your stock recovery and it will wipe data. OR you can boot into stock recovery and select "wipe data". Once done boot int recovery and just wait for few second, it you auto flash the Asus full firmware.

No, I haven't yet. I keep hoping there would be another OTA from Asus that would fix the problem. I've rooted my device, but that's all. I've not even installed recovery, and the bootloader is still locked. The reboots don't come often enough that they don't really bother me anymore. What really bugs me is that the tablet was working great until that pair of OTA's at the end of last year. Up till that time I had no reboots and everything was working smoothly. Like an idiot I installed them and now aside from the reboots the response lag is terrible. I can tap on the clock to bring up the menu and it can take up to 5 seconds before the menu even appears.
I'll get around to doing a fresh install one of these days, but I've been too busy.

I wouldn't count on it, since it is not a "known issue" with the TF700, as far as ASUS is concerned...

That might suggest it's an app compatibility issue introduced by the update -- I hope so for your sake. (I've had that happen a few times, too.)

Well... I would hardly call you an idiot for installing a manufacturer-provided update. I must admit I am slowly weening myself off of the Ï have to have the brandnewest bestest EVA update" because I have spent so much time fixing whatever issues a new update brought -- I am slowly beginning to understand the motto if it ain't broken, don't fix it.

Reboot issue with JB 4.1.2 vzw newest update on Razr HD

Hey so after a few days of the new update running OK I started having random reboots! I noticed on a few other sites people complaining about the same issue of reboots multiple times of the day! Just wanted to let everyone know a possible solution to the issue! I have went through multiple FDR's and did come to the conclusion that the random reboots for my phone were associated with a new update to the chrome browser and were easily fixed by uninstalling new update and telling it not to automatically update so hope this helps anyone who may be having the same issues!!!
Well so much for that after trying everything its back to rebooting again? I love my phone but seriously considering putting it against a wall!!!

Never had that issue with the new update. Try doing a factory reset or try the new fast boot files to start fresh. Not sure why chrome would be an issue.try the chrome beta version but I suspect chrome had nothing to do with the reboot just a bad initial update.

Finally broke down done a fast boot to the new files all is working seems OK anyway know in a day or 2!!!

My Wife's phone is doing the Random Reboot thing since the 4.1.2 update as well. I did a Factory Reset on it and it still does the same thing.
I suspect an application is doing it? Because I put the phone in Safe Mode and it never rebooted while in Safe Mode.
But I have No Idea of how to tell which app is doing it, other than to uninstall a random app after every reboot to find out which one it is.
But I would like to try this fast boot option? I know how to get the phone into fastboot, but which files are you redoing? What exactly are your doing ?
Have the same problem. I have done:
SBF 4.1.2
FDR
WIPE
Even tried running a parallel rom with safestrap (bakatang)
The chrome thing did not work
Keeps freezing. Seems the problem is way worse when having the phone play some music.
I am just about unlocking the thing and SBFing back to 4.1.1 but not really interested into unlocking the bootloader. That would be the last choice for me.
If someone knows of some way to fix this, please help, this used to be a great phone...
No problem here with the sfr rom... used for over 1 month now and no problem and my system is always fast...

I've been running some tests for about a week now since I got my RAZR and the results are interesting... I've had lockups and reboots multiple times a day, most often while doing something involving sound i.e. listening to music or playing a game or video. I've tried stock and custom 4.1.2 ROMs and custom 4.2.2 ROMs and it persists so I'm inclined to say its either bad audio software or faulty audio chips. This is everything I've done:
1. turning off sounds (keeping phone on vibrate/silent) pretty much eliminates the random lockups/reboots I got from receiving multiple texts or calls at once. I noticed if I bombarded the phone and made it ring a lot it gave the same results as listening to music but if its just a text or email or call here and there during regular use it the phone works fine.
2. Listening to music, either streamed or local from phone/SD storage and through headphones or speaker, would cause skips and audio cutting out. After a few minutes of this the phone will lock up completely and reboot itself. Strangely enough it happened only rarely or not at all while streaming music via bluetooth to a stereo.
3. I don't think its anything kernel related or if it is its not causing visible errors or wake locks. My battery seems to be just fine through all this.
4. I have tried multiple music/video players, put my SD card with music in another phone and the music plays fine, stock ROMs with nothing disabled/removed still has the issue, custom ROMs debloated and modified also have the issue. I think I've just about covered every base I can as an end user to track down what's causing it but I'm open to suggestions.
I have a replacement scheduled so I will see if that fixes it, I have seen this problem reported quite a few times all over the interwebz but there are also a lot of people not having the issue either so idk. If there are any Devs or anyone skilled in android-fu that can read logcats I will be more than willing to get those for you. Sorry for the essay everyone lol
tl;dr Like others I have freezes and reboots from what seems to me to be an audio software/hardware problem, either built in or from the 4.1.2 update

I am almost sure is kernel related bc I did not have problems in the 4.1.1 sw.
If someone that has an unlocked bootloader could install 4.1.1 from an sbf and tell if the problems are gone, would be great!
here is the sbfs: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/vanquish/list.php
here is the bl unlocker: http://vulnfactory.org/blog/2013/04/08/motorola-bootloader-unlocking/
u have to be rooted here: http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/15208-root-motochopper-yet-another-android-root-exploit-412/?pid=244281#entry244281
I am not doing that bc I do not use custom roms so dont want to unlock BL. If someone has, this could help much. It is different from using safestrap, because safestrap uses the same kernel, from what I read.

I have seen reports that the problem persists even on 4.1.1 but I am unlocked and rooted on stock 4.1.2 so if I get time I can give it a try

When I was at 4.1.1 phone was near perfect.
If you are unlocked, please do check. I am debating whether to unlock or not just bc of this. Today it has resetted at least a good 20 times or so.
Thanks for helping!!! Waiting for your results!!!!

one solution that has worked for me is silencing the phone or putting it on vibrate and I haven't had a freeze or reboot in almost 2 days... the problem seems to me to be related to audio/sound and not listening to music or watching videos along with silencing ringtones has put a stop to it which kind of confirms my suspicions... I will try and flash back when I can but it'll need a day or 2 of field testing to confirm if its a solution

I can confirm that audio stuff just does worse to the phone. However, I have not had your luck when silencing. Keeps rebooting no matter what. Please let us know when you do.

looks like a negative on the SBF, tried to restore 4.1.1 and it failed halfway through the flash, now won't turn on... working on reviving it... I really need to replace this thing as its been nothing but a PITA since I got it
old school post from my Thunderbolt via Tapatalk
wow that sucks. I recall reading somewhere that you could actually downgrade your software version if you have an unlocked bootloader.what is the error you are getting? Tried using RAZR utility 1.1? Won't it turn on at all? Maybe a discharged battery? Hope we can solve it

got it revived with Mattlgroff's new 1.2 utility, was able to force it to fastboot mode... the problem seemed to be some kind of partition error, I tried redownloading the sbf files thinking it was a bad file and got the same error so idk what it is since I'm on stock unrooted 4.1.2. My bootloader is already irreversibly unlocked so that won't be a problem lol but I am a n00b to RSD Lite and Moto devices so I'll tinker with it more when I get some free time
edit: I did have a Maxx HD way back at launch for a month or so running stock 4.1.1 and it ran perfectly, so my idea is its kernel/codec/software related. Hopefully a custom ROM (or hell even stock) with Hashcodes Qcom kernel will fix the issue we're having
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 2
I talked with vzw service, the assistant said that 2% of the phones were having this issue, wich for this kind of technology is a pretty big number of phones. Suuggested to send it to Motorola but since its rooted its almost sure not to be replaced by them. What is strange is that not everyone is having this issue. I would be almost sure Motorola is going to release a fix for this, but would not count days. Getting kind of frustrated with this phone I used to like so much. Thinking of going the htc route bc this is getting unbearable.
Any news in this? Anyone tried a new ROM that could solve this? Or even a fix?
... or just everyone had another phone lying aroud...

My wife & I both have this phone and still are constantly being rebooted. This is even after the software update. I have been wiped, factory reset, and everything possible, but I've not called for a replacement yet. Normally I havea worse luck with those.
Wife used to love this phone, now she hates it and hates we changed from AT&T to Verizon since we have no backup Verizon phones. At least we could take the sim out and go to the iPhone that's floating around the house when the phone went to pot before. Makes me really hate suggesting that we go back to Moto phones since that's all that I've used on Verizon.
Wonder if big red will get the new HTC One....
Tried flashing the MR-4 sbf, but did not solve the issue.

If an sbf didn't solve it then it's a hardware problem.you guys are definitely in the minority with this reboot issue.go get a warranty replacement.this phone and moto in general are solid phones.

[Q][ROM2SD] Dual boot SD card ROM freezing

I have been testing ROMs on my SD card using _that's method from here as well as the built in ROM2SD install from the CROMI-X installer.
Everything was working great using CM10.2 until a few days ago when my TF700 became unresponsive after 5-10 minutes whenever I was running on the SD card mounted ROM. (It had been working fine for about a week of steady use). When it becomes unresponsive, it doesn't register any screen touches nor do any hardware keys work. The only way to recover is with a hard reset (holding the power button for a while even though pressing once has no effect). Decided to see if it was something related to CM10.2 so I reformatted the SD card and installed CROMI-X to the SD card using the CROMI-X installer... used it for a little bit and got the same problem.
I'm back to using the internal ROM and have no issues.
Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be a problem with the SD card itself (I'm using gparted to format and the card appears to function normally in other devices...)? I don't think it's a kernel issue as I'm using _that-v7 both internally and on the SD ROM (either through the CROMI-X installer or with the modified rom2sd2.zip from _that's dual boot thread).
Anyways, any advice or theories would be appreciated. I'd post in the original dual-boot thread but as a serial lurker/flasher I don't have enough posts to participate in the dev thread.
I could have written your post....
I had EXACTLY the same setup, progression and result.
No idea for a solution though.... But doesn't it feel good not to be alone?
You'll need to provide a logcat for a proper diagnosis otherwise we are guessing
But my guess will be your sdcard is not up to the task. What type of card is it?

Maybe. The microSD interface in the TF700 is known to be unreliable, at least in combination with certain cards. It was even worse with old ICS kernels.

What utility are you using to partition and or format the sdcard??

I have what everybody else has: Scandisk Ultra class 10 formatted with Gparted.
I think I have the last installation still on the card. I'll give it a shot and try to capture a logcat, but that could be a looooooong logcat - if I remember correctly both CM and CROMi-X ran fine for a few days and then froze without warning. Not much fun using the tablet with a computer attached to it

I'm also using a 32GB SanDisk ultra UHS Class 1 (the red and grey one) formatted with gparted.
As for the logcat, I haven't been able to get my tablet working over adb since I moved to windows 8.1 but I will be messing around with that today so hopefully I'll have something later.

adb works fine in Windows 8.1. Use these drivers here:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=22962010882834442
Ok, got adb up and running. The full logcat is attached. I used the most verbose logging and the last responsive thing I was able to do was go into settings and attempt to keep wifi on in the low power settings (this occurs at 11:12:34.489 in the log). The tablet obviously saves this setting however the screen fails to update or register input after this point and actually continues to highlight the check box for that setting option as if I was continually touching it. I let the tablet run for a while to see if it was just laggy, but it failed to respond for over ten minutes... Anyways, let me know what you think and I'll be happy to test any theories.
(as a side note, you'll probably notice my wifi continually disconnecting and reconnecting, but my tablet has done that since I purchased it so it's probably unrelated).
I haven't been able to reproduce the freeze yet. Ran the tablet on rom2sd for more than an hour with all kinds of apps, Netflix, Quadrant etc - works like a charm.
I did format the ext4 partitions before installing rom2sd (yet again). Maybe I finally got it right?

Possibly but like that said we've had this issue with some cards since data2sd days. If it does happen again, grab a logcat and post it up. I bet it will report file system errors.

Will have a proper look later, but on first glance your tab seems to have real difficulties staying connected to your router.

Haha... Yea that's an understatement... Think it's actually a router/generic android problem as my gs4 and my roommate's gs4 and tablet all have problems staying connected at home and on other networks they work fine.
Appreciate you taking the time to check this out and love all the work you do.

I'd solve the router issues first - it might be the root cause. Either reboot it or reset it, use WiFi analyser to get a good channel. If that doesn't work kill it and get a decent one.
Hmmm never thought that would be anything more than an annoyance, but it's a good idea. I'll bring my tab to work Monday and see if it freezes there where I know the network is reliable.

It's just there are so many log entries related to wifi and connections.......
well, used the tab on the office wifi for several hours with no freezes and brought it home where it froze after about 10 minutes.
Looks like the router is the culprit which means I now have an excuse to buy a new one...
