New to S3. Seemingly frozen. Why does every app I install take "forever" to launch?
Just got my s3 sent to me from Verizon, replacing my nexus. Why does every app that I install, from the play store or side loaded, take about twenty seconds to start up? Is it because I don't have an SD card installed? I remember my s2 had a delay in unlocking when there was an SD card installed. When I touch the app to launch it, the phone is seemingly frozen for about twenty seconds, then the app launches and the screen dims. Any input on this? I don't have an SD card atm to install and test, unfortunately. Thank you!

Not sure what's going on, but screen dimming is probably just the display timeout value starting to take effect while you're waiting for the app to initialize. Some apps definitely take awhile to startup, but most are ready reasonably quickly on my phone.
Have you tried disabling Settings->Power Saving as an option?
- ooofest

My screen timeout is set to 30sec. By the time the app launches, the screen is dimming. I've tried clearing data for tw launcher, every possible option is disabled. I'll even make a darn video and YouTube it.

Moot but I put the demo video back up.

My efforts were wasted and I appreciate your time, fellow community members. The phone apparently prefers to use mobile data...I say this because I didn't have the sim card in cause I'm using my nexus to communicate. But I was on wifi on the s3. I put the sim card in and voila! No more of the apps hanging upon launch. Which I find odd and troubling.
I thank any of you that took the time to click this topic. Thank you.

Probably not the phone but the apps preferring data connection. I run my test Rezound without sim but haven't seen this problem. Haven't tried it on S3.

Just confirmed this. My apps take forever to load using wi-fi without a sim card.
Edit: Apps that don't need data open up with the same speed. Its just apps that need a data connection for some reason.

This is weird, I have two G3's & I use the 2nd one with no sim all the time.
I see no difference in app opening speed whatever when running on WiFi only with no sim installed.

Thank you. I reposted the video up above. Very odd. Now if work would just stop getting in the way of life so I can root this thing and delete all this annoying bloat...

[Q] 4g sim card swap?

So I just bought my friend a stratosphere off of ebay. Does anyone know if i can just throw my Charge sim card into the stratosphere just to set it up (root, custom rom, etc.?)
The SIM card has nothing to do with root or customization. It's a card that enables LTE service, essentially.

That's not what he was asking.
OP, are you sure you need to have a SIM in the phone to do things on it? If so, you probably would be able to, but I don't know what implications that would have with your account.
I'm dealing with replacements right now and inserting my SIM into the new phone activates the new phone. I don't know if you could run into any issues (such as warranty stuff) by having his phone activated on your account, even for just a short time.
So I think you should be able to physically. I have no idea what consequences, if any, there would be.
If all you want to do is root/rom the phone, you can bypass the setup wizard without needing a sim card. From the main setup wizard screen just go into Emergency dial, then type in *#TESTMODE - that should enable the capacitive buttons so that you can hit the home button to get to the launcher - which should be all you need to do in order to proceed. Hope this helps!
Oh, my bad. I had to read the OP about 3 more times before I finally understood what he was asking.

Thanks everyone and sorry for any confusion. I ended rooting before getting the sim, then adding the rom n other stuff after. Its up and running like a champ! Thanks again!

Turning a Infuse into only a Music Player/Camera?

I was thinking about purchasing a Samsung Galaxy Music Player 5.0 for my mom but for the price/specs I notice a used Infuse is a better deal. I was thinking of just buying a used Infuse off ebay and turning it into just a Music Player/Camera. Is there way to make the phone work with out a sim card? and without it displaying no sim card?
Yes u can use it wothout the simcard but will show a sign in the status bar that there in no simcard.

Thanks for the info! Do you know if I will have any problems browsing web pages or accessing the market place with only wifi running and no sim card?

You will have no problems...I do it all the time, the HTC vivid is my main phone so i rarely have my sim in my infuse...market works, YouTube works, browser works...everything works as long as you have WiFi...if you don't have WiFi then obviously things that require internet will not work

I gave my daughter my hd2 when I left t-mo. I put android on it (basically the only way that phone was usable) and she uses it for games and YouTube just fine. I even found an app that was free that gave her a phone number and a way to send and receive texts with as long as she's on wifi. Next time I'm playing around I'm going to see if I can use that number to sign her up for a voip service.
Android is a wonderful thing!

You can use Google Voice in conjunction with app such as Talkatone, get a number from Google and make/receive free calls and text over WiFi.
I use this setup with my N7 and it works great.....no data plan or phone service required...and even better, these are free apps!!!
Also set the phone to airplane mode. Then toggle on wifi.
Airplane mode may stop it from searching for phone radio signal and conserve battery. I don't know if not having a sim card in will already do that.
Airplane mode on her phone is constant.

[Q] Remove Cell Radio and Services on GS3 (Wi-Fi only)

Is there a way to remove cell radio and telephony services from a GS3, making it a Wi-Fi only device.
I flashed jelly bellies any-phone Wi-Fi only zip, it works on a Fascinate but not on a GS3
And I know that airplane mode works, but to me it's not good enough.

Just use Phone Info from the play store and turn off the radio. Don't see why airplane mode isn't sufficient. Does the same thing.

I've had phone info for a while but never thought about that, Thanks. Hopefully someone can fix Jelly bellies to work for the GS3, it would be appreciated!

Why exactly are you trying to have a WiFi device only that Airplane mode is not good enough?
Telephony services are running in the background. I don't want any traces that the device is a phone, I don't need a second phone. I'm also peaky, I don't want to see the airplane mode icon constantly on status bar.

I've wondered about the same thing. I thought breaking the imei would be a good place to start. There's an easy to access internal antenna I was also considering disconnecting as well to try to prevent the devices communication with the mother station..
my tapatalk signature sucks more than yours.
Never really thought about it myself but i would start by downloading the rom that you wanted to flash to the device and start removing the ril files and any verizon apps. Also wtihout the sim card I'm pretty sure the phone isnt really connecting to the network to begin with. I have a spare s3 laying around so I'll try to see what i can figure out for you
Like I said, I went to the thread link, listed below and flashed this on a Galaxy S "Fascinate" it was successful. The flash removed all the telephony services.
This zip should theoretically work on any phone. But I think this doesn't work on the GS3 maybe do to the naming that Samsung uses on the system apks.

No activated Sim card

My wife is getting a new phone for Christmas and the kids will most likely be getting the infuse. Currently it is running cm11 on it and her Sim is getting ready to be deactivated
Will the phone require a Sim to boot and be usable as a small tablet/ media player?
Will it give an error no Sim?
Is there some mods I'll need to make on this?
Is it possible to turn off the phone radio by default and keep WiFi on?
I will freeze the messaging and phone app but if I can gain battery life I'm all for it.

I run a spare Infuse with no SIM card and it works great. You will get a notice on boot up but that you do not have a SIM but that is all and it works great with out one. I install the MagicJack app and Skype and I get and make phone calls with it all the time.
You dont need to make any mods to the phone.

There's a flashable zip located in this Rootzwiki thread that'll disable the cellular radio and remove telephony and messaging services. I haven't tried it but it worked for another XDA member.

Dual PIN lock screen - is it possible?

Hi all,
I'm wondering if there is an App that will give me the option of locking my device with 2 different PINs. 1st PIN is the real-deal and will activate my device, tbe second PIN is a self-destruct PIN. So if someone tries to mug me or force my PIN from me I can give them the 'special' PIN, which will nuke my device & keep my identity safe?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

What's the point? Wouldn't erasing the device just make the person who's mugging you more irritated and likely to hit you in the face? Besides, as long as your phone actually is locked he won't get anywhere, but if you wipe it he gets a 'fresh out of the box' phone instantly.

i'm surprised muggers and thieves have yet to learn about recovery mode theres that boeing phone that is supposed to nuke itself when into the wrong hands? http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/27/us-boeing-phone-idUSBREA1Q04K20140227
It's amazing how many of us tech folks like asking extra questions rather than saying, 'hmm dunno' or 'yep try this'. I guess thats why business people and those in marketing hate having meeting with I.T guys.

Oh by the way, I've just settled for SD card & device encryption & cloud backups for redundancy (I have 2 TB of cloud storage, might as well use it)

I was going to suggest device encryption as well. Faster device wiping is a benefit too.
I think no way..
I wonder there are someone makes an app that able me to make 100x100 dots pattern lockcsreen
