[Q] 4g sim card swap? - Verizon Droid Charge

So I just bought my friend a stratosphere off of ebay. Does anyone know if i can just throw my Charge sim card into the stratosphere just to set it up (root, custom rom, etc.?)

The SIM card has nothing to do with root or customization. It's a card that enables LTE service, essentially.

That's not what he was asking.
OP, are you sure you need to have a SIM in the phone to do things on it? If so, you probably would be able to, but I don't know what implications that would have with your account.
I'm dealing with replacements right now and inserting my SIM into the new phone activates the new phone. I don't know if you could run into any issues (such as warranty stuff) by having his phone activated on your account, even for just a short time.
So I think you should be able to physically. I have no idea what consequences, if any, there would be.

If all you want to do is root/rom the phone, you can bypass the setup wizard without needing a sim card. From the main setup wizard screen just go into Emergency dial, then type in *#TESTMODE - that should enable the capacitive buttons so that you can hit the home button to get to the launcher - which should be all you need to do in order to proceed. Hope this helps!

Oh, my bad. I had to read the OP about 3 more times before I finally understood what he was asking.

Thanks everyone and sorry for any confusion. I ended rooting before getting the sim, then adding the rom n other stuff after. Its up and running like a champ! Thanks again!

[Q] Newly Unboxed Phone has no data

Ok so I got the Infuse today. Go ME! The screen is sooo much better than my captivate's, if that's possible.
So I take the SIM card out of my old Captivate that I got this time last year. I have the 2GB plan for it. But only now, my Infuse 4g has no data connection even after letting sit for a few minutes.
I did some looking around here at different APN settings and they didn't seem to do anything except cut off my Phone service. Some other people suggested my data plan might not be up to par. But I have a data plan for the Captivate that I activated when I got that phone. Are the phone's data plans really that different that I have to call AT&T to resolve it?
The phone is totally stock, no flashes done to it, hasn't had root attempted on it yet. Brand New out of the box.
You have to call att to have it switched from 3g to 4g I had the same problem they had me give them some numbers and put some numbers in my phone then everything worked.

Ah. Thanks then, that should be easy enough then. Too bad its today though, even the non US tech support is closed till tomorrow.
If u used the sim out of ur captivate u need a new sim because infuse is 4g and captivate is 3g(it makes a difference some over the phone tech doesn't know better). I had this problem

Im pretty sure that dont make a difference. I still use my sim from when the razr was still in att. But anything is possible

Call them and have them switch the data plan. I had the same issue. You don't need a new sim or even add anything to the settings. Its also no price change.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA App
Yup, happened to me. Switched from a BB Bold, att had to switch my plan at no charge.
You don't have to call and switch...I came from a 3g phone to this one with no issues...you have to put your sim card in you may have to reboot a couple times for it to recognize it....it worked for me
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
press and hold power button ..make sure data mode is on ..(or is this only if youre rooted)?
did you get it through att with a new contract.. they would have sent you a new sim??
i used my new sim when i first got mine when upgrading from captivate.. dont know if old sim worked or not i just switched it when i got the phone.
what firmware came on your phone?? must know!!
Go to settings>mobile networks >apn settings and see if you have an apn ....it may have been deleted by accident...happened on my daughters captivate....easy fix...just add the apn ....

Will sim with tablet plan work?

I'm using a Skyrocket and what I'm wondering is if I could pop a sim from a Galaxy tablet or iPad (with sim adapter) into my phone and have data access via the tablet plan associated with the sim. I figured I could use data only with my Skyrocket since Im already in contract with another carrier. Has anyone tried this? Would it work?

Technically I see no reason why it wouldn't work. They may discover you are using the sim in something other then the tablet, & that could cause problems I guess. I would be very careful when using sim adapters, especially if your planning on swapping the sim between two devices on a regular basis. Even with good adapters the slightest bend or pressure placed on the card can dislodge it from the adapter, leading to bent or broken pins trying to remove the card. It happened to me with a carrier bought, not cut, micro sim.
It shouldn't be a problem. The SIMs work, I've done it myself but I'd hesitate swapping a mini SIM very often, that won't last long I'm sure. In fact the lowest cost is a data only plan and using VoIP or paying the per use fees if you rarely need voice.

New to S3. Seemingly frozen. Why does every app I install take "forever" to launch?

New to S3. Seemingly frozen. Why does every app I install take "forever" to launch?
Just got my s3 sent to me from Verizon, replacing my nexus. Why does every app that I install, from the play store or side loaded, take about twenty seconds to start up? Is it because I don't have an SD card installed? I remember my s2 had a delay in unlocking when there was an SD card installed. When I touch the app to launch it, the phone is seemingly frozen for about twenty seconds, then the app launches and the screen dims. Any input on this? I don't have an SD card atm to install and test, unfortunately. Thank you!

Not sure what's going on, but screen dimming is probably just the display timeout value starting to take effect while you're waiting for the app to initialize. Some apps definitely take awhile to startup, but most are ready reasonably quickly on my phone.
Have you tried disabling Settings->Power Saving as an option?
- ooofest
My screen timeout is set to 30sec. By the time the app launches, the screen is dimming. I've tried clearing data for tw launcher, every possible option is disabled. I'll even make a darn video and YouTube it.

My efforts were wasted and I appreciate your time, fellow community members. The phone apparently prefers to use mobile data...I say this because I didn't have the sim card in cause I'm using my nexus to communicate. But I was on wifi on the s3. I put the sim card in and voila! No more of the apps hanging upon launch. Which I find odd and troubling.
I thank any of you that took the time to click this topic. Thank you.

Probably not the phone but the apps preferring data connection. I run my test Rezound without sim but haven't seen this problem. Haven't tried it on S3.

Just confirmed this. My apps take forever to load using wi-fi without a sim card.
Edit: Apps that don't need data open up with the same speed. Its just apps that need a data connection for some reason.
This is weird, I have two G3's & I use the 2nd one with no sim all the time.
I see no difference in app opening speed whatever when running on WiFi only with no sim installed.

[Q] Mom will be using my rooted S3,

and I will be getting the S4. However, my main concern is whether or not verizon will be checking my S3 for root, even if it just switching users (from me to my mom.) Should I odin back to stock or do the guys at verizon even care?
If you buy online, nobody really cares, but I don't think the Verizon guys will care as long as you don't have a custom ROM or something and as long as there's no problem with the phone. I could be wrong though, so I would suggest just buying it online.

Im getting it from a verizon store, so how does the procedure work anyways?
I feel like as long as they don't reboot my phone, they won't see the custom boot animation and see that it's rooted.
I havent done a switch in store, but my guess is that the rep will want to take your phone and do a factory reset on it. In that case they will notice it is rooted. Not sure if they really care though.

Yeah that's all you really need to do. Just delete your Google account and add hers and you should be good, or just do a factory reset. Whichever you wanna do.

All they do is deactivate your current phone by taking out the SIM card. They'll take out the s4, boot it up and set it up, and put your sim card back in. They shouldn't have to reboot your phone other than turning it off to safely remove the SIM. That's pretty much it, and if they see a custom boot logo, I don't thing they'll care that much.

Dual PIN lock screen - is it possible?

Hi all,
I'm wondering if there is an App that will give me the option of locking my device with 2 different PINs. 1st PIN is the real-deal and will activate my device, tbe second PIN is a self-destruct PIN. So if someone tries to mug me or force my PIN from me I can give them the 'special' PIN, which will nuke my device & keep my identity safe?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

What's the point? Wouldn't erasing the device just make the person who's mugging you more irritated and likely to hit you in the face? Besides, as long as your phone actually is locked he won't get anywhere, but if you wipe it he gets a 'fresh out of the box' phone instantly.
better empty than an SD card full of my work and client proposals..

i'm surprised muggers and thieves have yet to learn about recovery mode theres that boeing phone that is supposed to nuke itself when into the wrong hands? http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/27/us-boeing-phone-idUSBREA1Q04K20140227
It's amazing how many of us tech folks like asking extra questions rather than saying, 'hmm dunno' or 'yep try this'. I guess thats why business people and those in marketing hate having meeting with I.T guys.

Oh by the way, I've just settled for SD card & device encryption & cloud backups for redundancy (I have 2 TB of cloud storage, might as well use it)

I was going to suggest device encryption as well. Faster device wiping is a benefit too.
I think no way..
I wonder there are someone makes an app that able me to make 100x100 dots pattern lockcsreen
