[Q] How to get a free unlock code from AT&T for MB865? - Motorola Atrix 2

Hello,
In order to make my phone more valuable for when I sell it, where can I get an unlock code from AT&T for free?
I just got this replacement today but the original one I got in December (For Christmas).
I'm just looking to sell this thing (not now but whenever I have it for at least 1-2 years) and get a Samsung Galaxy S3 (Or get something from ChinaVasion.com)
Anybody?
Thanks in advanced,
TCF38012

Most of the time, if you're account is in good standing with AT&T, you can just call them up and ask for one. You may have to be the account holder though.

I read that somewhere that at&t will only give up the unlock code if you paid full price for the phone. I got my unlock code from.....
www.myworld.ebay.com/unlockliberty?_trksid=p2047675.l2559
it was only $3.45 I was shocked that it actually worked. From the listing you will need to email the seller your IMEI I never got my code until I did that.

You can get the code 3 months after getting the phone from ATT, you just call them and they give you the code. Thats what I did.

Did you have to give them the last 4 digits of a SSN?
Thanks in advanced,

yes they use it to verify that you are the account owner...
edit-i was asked for the same when I got my original atrix unlocked and also for the iphone

I got my phone from ebay for like $80. No matter what I did a sim card would not be recognized in the phone. At&t gave my mother the run around about repairing it so I sent it in for repair and motorola fixed it with out any issues. I don't think at&t would have given me the unlock code because I was not the original owner. Same reason why they would not repair it.

Anyone know how to unlock the Captivate once it's rooted? Or do I need to buy a code from one of those sites? Thanks.

Did'nt they pass some law or loose some class action suit, after 90 days in good standing or something like that AT&T has to give you the unlocked code... The only exception I think was the Iphone, something about thats apple's terms to unlock or not....

You're in the same boat as me. I bought one today knowing it was locked and might not have a code available for a few weeks from one of the "usual" places.
If you did like I did and bought it legit from an AT&T store, there's a chance you can call up AT&T tomorrow (what I'm trying) and get it unlocked all proper like. Otherwise, you may be in for a bit of a wait.

Problem is I bought it outright from Best Buy today to use on Rogers in Canada, so I don't have an ATT account. I thought the unlock would be relatively painless.

There's a guy in Burnaby who says it can unlock it using a cable, not a code. Going there tomorrow. Will let you know.

..and likewise let me know how you make out with AT&T.
Yeah me too. One reason I'm hesitating to buy it is that it's sim locked to AT&T. Since I also travel to other countries, I really need a totally unlocked phone. Please let us know how it turns out.
Phoned AT&T this morning and was told that the Captivate cannot be unlocked, at least not right now.
I called back (sometimes that helps) and chatted with another rep. and was told that AT&T has a 10 month exclusivity to the Samsung Captivate, and there would be no unlock until then.
10 months?? exclusive?? Get a clue AT&T, this thing is available on every major network, and unlocked on most.
If you don't have a post-paid AT&T account, you will get no help from AT&T for this unlock.
But most AT&T reps have no clue what it is. You have to explain to them. But only if you meet the qualification (post-paid, at least 90 days etc.).

I've tried the second one and they came back with 'no code found', and refunded my money.
I also phoned AT&T with my brother's account info and they told me 'can't unlock the phone for 10 months due to it's an AT&T exclusive phone'.
I called AT&T as I have a Premier Account with International calling and always get a subsidy sim unlock, but they were unable to find the unlock code. It seems that these are not available yet. AT&T might be blocking them for a while since the phone is so new.
Tried www.cellunlocker.net/www.unlockcodesource.com and they could not find a code for my phone either. Just ordered from www.unlockallcellular.com. Lets see how that goes.
For some reason, my IMEI ends with /2 after the usual 15 numbers. Anyone know why?
same here, 16 digits/2
My order with unlockallcellular.com is showing as Generating Code... at the moment.
Not getting my hopes up at this point though.
Order is still pending, but they have updated their website, the Captivate is now listed as Not Available.
Bummer.

Keep us posted if you find anything. I'm waiting on my phone (I'm out of the country too). Hopefully they figure things out in the next week or so. Hope I don't just end up with an expensive new toy...
I am starting to think that this has something to do with our weird IMEI's that end with /02. Maybe some new sim lock feature that Samsung and AT&T have come up with to prevent unlocking. Does anyone know the Vibrant and Galaxy S IMEI formats? Do the have 15 digits and the /02?

SIM unlock

I searched General and didn't find anything other than, "you gotta pay like 30$ and they'll email you the code.'
On my Infuse, there was an unlock within three days of release.
What's the status for us? There's got to be a free software unlock that we can do by now.

man... crazy how little Dev support for this phone. really shocked this hasn't been done by now.
id rather pay money to a Dev to post this for everyone than a website like that.
hi
you can unlock your phone using codes. you can get the codes from Mobileunlocksolutions.com. while unlocking your phone through codes you need only your imei and a foregin sim to get it unlocked.

Did anyone try the galaxy s unlock app from the market? That app worked for my att s2. I think ill go try out.
Edit: guess that doesn't work. Says I have a busy box problem. When I get home from work I'll try the manual hex way and see what I can get done there.

I tried Cellunlocker.net and they email me back telling me, unable to find code.
I too have contacted at&t and I got the same response, phone locked to network.
I have also tryed the Hex manual way and no luck.
Does anyone had any success unlocking SGH-I727?
Yeah I tried both the unlockers from the market as well as looking for the bml3 file for the hex but apparently it's hidden in a different file as the bml3 doesn't seem to exist on our phone.

Guys, any update on the unlock, XDA-style? I tried several unlock code providers and am still waiting for a code from them. It is painfully delayed. Did any developer start working on some software unlock for Skyrocket? I understand lesser demand on this phone but if we can get some work going on on the unlock front, that had be awesome!
I will be the first one to donate btw! $28 is too much if it is severely delayed.
yeah, i'd love to have my skyrocket unlocked, but still waiting to see who will get it done for us.
Still nothing apparently. this is nuts. i unlocked my Infuse last year the day after i got it...and i got it on launch day!
Mine's unlocked but when I put in *#7465685# it still say Network Lock, Network Subset Lock, SP Lock, CP Lock.
Anyone figured out how to unlock it without having to purchase a code yet?
+1 here, waiting for someone dev figure out a way to get the unlock code XDA style... I had to purchase a code for my SGS 2 off eBay just now to unlock it, but it costs only 99 cents. Not sure why the unlock code for the SkyRocket cost so much, I mean, $23 is the lowest eBay price last check...
I'm convinced that the online sites are run as side projects by network operator or manufacturer device support employees (ie AT&T or Samsung) who can unlock using the IMEI.
I can confirm that the lock code for this phone is located in a completely different location. Also, I am willing to throw a lot of time at this if someone can point me to the furthest progress made or point me to someone who knows what's going on.
I just orderd a t-mobile sim off ebay for $1 and plan on calling att for a unlock code as I've been a good customer forever. I can dump my partitions before and after the unlock code to try and narrow down where it is stored.
just called att and they claim that the skyrocket is exclusive to att and therefor don't need to provide me a unlock code. So much for that.

Web OS AT&T Unlock Codes

Hey guys I just wanted to share my experience so here it goes.
I just bought an AT&T Unlocked Veer. I've been with AT&T for two years. I got on the support chat on AT&T's website and asked the lady for unlock codes for two phones, my veer and my Atrix 4G. The Atrix went without a hitch she had it in like two mins but the Hp Veer was a different story but in no way was it a hassle. This is what happened...After I got the code for the Atrix I asked her for the code to the Veer, so I gave her my IMEI and she said one moment and then she messaged back saying that the phone is able to be unlocked but that the code wasn't in her system. I've read online all about AT&T not having the codes so I expected this. But then the lady said I'm gonna start a case for you so someone with more access can possible retrieve the code for you. I'm like awesome. So she sets up the case and thats pretty much it. In four days (today) I received an email with all the info and the unlock code. =] (They ask for a number to contact but just ask if they can do it by email.)
I don't know if this is common knowledge but I thought I would post about it so people can find out.
Im attaching a text document to show you guys what the email consisted of.
I have removed all personal information.
I didn't get one reply lol

I did something stupid

I bought a HTC one s for 200$ off of Craiglist (first time buying anything from there) came home and tried putting a SIM card in it doesn't get any signal. So i called tmobile up and they said to me the phone was block for fraud and they told me there isn't anything they can do about it. I tried calling n texting the seller back he would not respond. Is there anything i can do with the phone now or am i just stuck with the way the phone is now?

Not much you can do as far as T-mobile.
It could be SIM unlock to use on a different network, ie AT&T.
Meant to "quote" but gave you a "Thanks" LOL
i tried the free method of unlocking it but that didn't work. I thought i was coming up with the wrong code but turns out it was the correct code because i tried a online website that charge to unlock it and they gave me the same exact code i came up with and still haven't had any luck

I'm curious as to why it will not work, is it because the phone imei was block by tmobile. Would that also block me from unlocking it. I look everywhere online n i can't seem to find a solution.

I have no idea what you can do OP but damn that sucks. Good luck with resolving it... now I'm going to think twice before buying a phone from Craiglist.
Always power up, insert sim and make a test call, text and data pull with any used phone purchase. Put the screen through tests, and the touch sensor. Test the headphone jack and all buttons. Look at water damage indicators.
There is a sim unlock thread in development section have you tried it? The only way than would be to change your imei though thats ILLEGAL! As ILLEGAL as stealing and buying the steal!

Everything works fine the phone is practically new it came with the original box and everything. Its just block by T-Mobile carrier. I'll go check at a local cell phone shop and see if they can unlock it, to see if it works on another carrier. If it doesn't then got damnit I'm stuck with the phone way it is....

Making call., send text , .... On the phone before you buy still not enough. There are some asshole out there sell the phone;
1) then report stolen (assume they have insurance ) . Then whatever you do still meaningless.
2) they are on value plan ( they pay full price for thier phone in 20 month). Then they stop using tmobile.
=> both cases above will make tmobile lock your phone.
The most safety way to buy phone on craoglist now is have proof of purchase from the owner.

A proof of purchase from seller on CL does not insure you won't have these fraud problems.
To OP, I would file a police report.

no, with proof of purchase that shows the seller is the one who bought the phone from tmobile, then you can contact tmobile so they can unlock your phone and make the seller pays for what he/she did. If you file a police report, i assume they wouldn't do anything except you have to turn in the phone you bought. There are several topics on XDA discuss about this problem and the only loser is the buyer. I'm feel sorry for OP.
P/s: nasty things like this are happening more often on Craigslist lately, this is why i won't buy phone from craigslist anymore.

What these people are doing is buying the phone on a payment plan. Sell the phone on CL and not make the payments to Tmobile. Sometimes phone will work for a month till it get BL. There's no disputing that it was bought from Tmobile but no payment to then equal BL phone.

Yeah, that's the case make me pissed off. By BL a phone because some one not pay money for them, Tmobile just wastes their phone, make the buyer become such a loser and pretty angry to tmobile them-self . however, the winner is the a**hole who sold the phone...
Weirdest thing is that it can't be unlocked ?? Gosh

Not sure how it works in the States but here in the UK if your phone gets blocked it'll be blocked on all UK carriers.
If you put any sim card it checks against a database and notifies that it's barred.
No way around it apart from changing IMEI which is ILLEGAL.

SIM Unlock for S7 bought in Samsung.com?

Hello,
I bought a T-Mobile Galaxy S7 on samsung.com and i haven't been able to SIM unlock it.
After many calls and chats, T-Mobile support told me this: "... because the device was purchased directly from the manufacturer our system doesn't recognize the device as being a T-Mobile device. Even though it is a T-Mobile model and has T-Mobile software, a T-Mobile device is considered to be one bought or sold by T-Mobile directly. We have a database of the IMEI's of the devices we carry and sell, and this lets us unlock eligible devices upon a customer's request."
Samsung support is useless.
I tried a 3rd party unlock service two weeks ago and I'm still waiting. They asked me to please be patient because the T-Mobile server has been down.
T-Mobile unlock app did more damage than good.
I'm also still trying to return the cellphone but Samsung hasn't sent any prepaid labels yet, I've called 3 times on 3 different weeks and they said they're about to send it. , that I should wait a couple of days.
So, in the mean time, is there any other option to unlock this thing? like a brute force unlock.
Thanks.
Let me know if you find an answer. I have an s6 edge that till date after it being active on T-Mobile for over 8 months (Samsung purchase phone - T-Mobile variant) the application from T-Mobile tells me the device is not eligible". Samsung care says they don't unlock that my carrier does lol

Would it be possible to flash the MetroPCS ROM and use a SIM unlock service for MetroPCS? Or do the same with AT&T?
yeah everyone i have tried for unlocking says the service is down...more like the inside person they use is not available...have asked a couple of sites and ebay sellers...same thing...they must all use the same person or exploit.
I was getting the runaround from Samsung to goto T-Mobile and vice versa.. luckily the T-Mobile tech support was helpful and agreed to be on conference with Samsung support and it was a battle with Samsung to get some responsible answer as they kept saying that they don't unlock phones. Then when we escalated to the manager, she repeated the same but at the end created a case to service the phone. Once it reached Samsung, they just said updated software and are sending back on same day.. Not sure if it got fixed, will let you know as soon as I get it..

It was bought directly via samsung.com as a t-mobile variant with t-mobile firmware. That's odd unless if your model was modified at some point? Perhaps lazy t-mobile rep? What I was told is that after 5 days even if bought from Samsung as a t-mobile variant it will lock itself once a sim card is left in it

Oh ok, the rep has not given up and she is still trying everyday for a solution.. my model was never modified, everything stock and used on T-Mobile for 1.5 months.. I wonder how you can be eligible for unlock if you've not used tmo sim for more than 5 days.. Maybe your rep involved some engineer to add the imei through backdoor process? Did you email them proof of purchase?

I've had T-Mobile service for around 2 years almost and I did use the T-Mobile s6 edge for almost 11 months.
I believe what the rep that helped me meant is that when you buy a T-Mobile variant phone from Samsung or any oem that you should run the Device unlock app asap otherwise once you leave a SIM card inserted for 5 days or more it will lock the device to that carrier that the sim belongs to.

Basically, the IMEI needs to be added to the T-Mobile database, but because it was never sold by them it errors out. I just got off the phone with Tech Support and sadly, their notes don't go back far enough to tell me exact process, but I was told that the Business Support department was the one that actually solved the issue for me (along with contacting their Samsung Rep). Maybe that will help you guys out, at least as a starting point.
Edit: T-Mobile support just confirmed. Speak to Business Support, they can fix it.
Thanks for the replies.. I wasn't able to check last solution as my rep agreed to replace it with T-Mobile sold device.. so got an s7 edge which is cheaper now than s7

I registered in this forum just to say thanks to you. I wasted more than two weeks speaking to tech support. Their attitude was great but they did nothing effective. I read your post and spoke to business support, the unlock issue got resolved quickly over the weekend.
This really saves my ass because I am going overseas soon. T-mobile really need to have better communication between different departments.
A small update for anyone who ends up here via google:
T-Mobile is now aware of the issue, and if you contact them on Twitter (@tmobilehelp), their specialised customer service division, T-Force, can get you unlocked and out the door almost immediately. The process takes a few days, but they know the steps to take to get the ball rolling.
Wow, I can't believe it took 3 months to solve this.
I don't know how much time I lost calling T-Mobile and Samsung. BTW, Samsung support is the worst ever.
Since I heard the about the unlock problem, I started trying to return my phone in parallel while trying to unlock it. Samsung people didn't want to provide prepaid shipping labels, first I never got them after I was told to wait a couple of days. I called many times and got the same response. Then the 30 days passed and they started saying it was to late to return, that I had to pay restocking fee. It took me another month explaining it was their fault the 30 days passed and that I needed prepaid shipping label and a full refund. I received the shipping labels the 2nd week on May and returned the phone. I still haven't received my refund. I called today, and the representative told me the refund was posted just today, and told me to wait 3 to 5 business days.
I'm happy some of you were able to unlock it. I got tired of waiting and talking with the support guys. And I don't even have a T-Mobile line. That's why I wanted to unlock it in the first place.
The easiest way to unlock this is changing the IMEI number, i recently paid $80 to get it changed but it now shows up as unlocked & clean on the T-MOBILE network. Sorry i didn't read this post before maybe this information could have helped.
