Best Firewall - Asus Transformer TF700

What is the best Firewall for the Infinity? What do you use?
Specifically an App that would restrict individual permissions of installed and system Apps. For example why would Angry Birds need my location?
TIA
Mods: Please delete thread or move to General Forum. Thanks

Pre JB I would have said LBE Privacy Guard (from website, not offered for tablet on market)
It does not work with JB, sadly, enabling the protection service more or less disables your device then (happened on tf700 and galaxy note)
Am looking for a good one now, too
(of course, you could use rom toolbox to find and disable all sorts of receivers...)
Edit: this thread should move to General...

LbE works on JB but is not on playstore .google it

Sure? Did so today, and only found stories identical to mine. You activate protection service (dont remember exact name) and your screen goes black..., and stays that way. It's fun recovering then. If you do not enable this service, then yes, it works. Their website didn't have a new version.

I use avast! Mobile Security's firewall (white list mode), requires root.

Thanks. Avast is good but I prefer to use LBE. I currently use LBE on my Razr and love it. I just wish that LBE was available for the infinity or another program will come out.
So far I've been playing around with droid wall and using iptables to restrict what programs has internet access. Gonna have to give Rom toolbox another try.

Holy Crap, Rom toolbox is Awesome! A huge improvement over past versions. I never knew it could disable receivers.

Are you talking about broadcast receivers? Are they what's used to send those stupid notification spam messages in your notification bar?

get a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422479
i use it since 2 weeks on jb and it works fine

[APP] TexTab 1.10 on Galaxy Tab 7... how does it work on YOUR Tab 7?

TexTab is an app that lets you send and receive SMS from your phone, via your tablet. Your message history still collects on your phone for both sender and receiver, but you can control it with your tablet. This is especially good for those of us with smaller phones (like my Aria), and for those of us who do NOT use their Tablet as a phone... or do not have native SMS allowed in their stock Tab (AT&T for example, and of course wifi-only models). TexTab doesn't have access to your phone's contact list, or it's SMS history, but again, the history is normal in the phone, and you can always Bluetooth over your favorite contacts.
I joined in the developer discussion on this app because to begin with, it had some issues, but the idea is a good one. At one point I actually paid the 2 bux but I am concerned that the problems aren't going away any time soon. Here is the thread where I introduce my issues in detail:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133277&page=31
Has anyone used this yet? Impressions? Issues? He designed this with Honeycomb tablets in mind (specifically the Tab 10.1). The more of us 7-inch owners who give him feedback, the more likelihood he can solve the issues. I really don't think this was ready to move out of beta and into a paid app (which I explained to him earlier in that thread) but IF he can get it less glitchy, it would be worth the 2 dollars for sure. When the app works, it's super convenient to include my phone's SMS onto my Tab along with my other emails and IM apps... our virtual keyboards being far more practical to type on.
It is pretty cool to see and app that does this as I hate having to switch devices to respond to texts... it is a shame it is having these problems like you said I would lore then willing spend $2 on an app that could do this

Have you tried the lite version?
Is the Samsung apps one the light one? Works OK, not as good Bluetooth range as would really be needed to make it an everyday Walkabout though. Got one room over and lost bt Conection and was a pain reconnecting without going and putting the connection up manually so it was a short lived novelty ...

Must be.. as its not device, I've got it from Samsung apps on both phone and tab. Grab market enabler or similar wipe the Samsung apps cache and stored data select Telstra au and see if its there then. My tab is now wifi only and so i had to spoof a sim to get the apk to open and chose Telstra Australia.

[Q] Should I root my Moto G?

I've just received my fresh new Moto G, and I've been having second thoughts on rooting it. Can anyone convince me on whether or not I should root my phone, thanks!
I voted yes.
But to be honest, you should know for yourself. Do you need root? If not I wouldn't consider rooting. If you don't know, read about what you can do with root!
If you want to root, have a look at the guides and tutorials collection in the Moto G General forum.
If you decided to root, but you have problems (not working): Visit the Modaco Forum Modaco Forum and the topics of PaulOBrien. You'll find more up2date information on his rooting methods there. If you try with superboot, see my post on page 7 in the modaco forum if you have problems.
Happy tinkering
I purchased the International version for a friend of mine who is not technically savvy. I set up the phone and noticed that there was very little customization and bloatware; therefore, I decided to go without root.
As was mentioned a the previous post, you should ask yourself why you need root. If you can't get what you want without root, go ahead and root it.
I'd do it, but I wouldn't bother with custom ROMs when they start to become more abundant for this phone. The software on the Moto G is so close to stock that it's not really worth changing. Root, on the other hand, is pretty nice if only for installing AdAway. I did it pretty much solely for this purpose on the new Moto G I got for my dad's birthday because I know he's not very tech savvy and would likely click on one of the ads in a free version of an app.
Yes....you should only root if any of the above things interest you....if you have a specific reason to root. Otherwise why root.
And a question for you..........should I eat this tuna sandwich?

@kj2112
Maybe, if you're hungry?
Sorry for ot^^
Wait at least 2 weeks to know if you have a defective phone or not, if in 2 weeks you got no problems then consider Root.
Check: screen, camera, USB , Battery...ETC
I say no for now. The whole reason I root phones apart from adaway, is to clear it of crap. The Moto G comes with no crap, and you can always disable installed apps. If you really want the added functionality that root gives then you wouldn't be asking.
So far i have rooted for the following reasons -
Titanium Backup
Xposed Framework
AdFree
Plus it also gives some antivirus software more features/control.
I say if aren't looking to use particular app that needs Root then don't bother.
I voted Yes even though I haven't rooted it yet (because I have to thoroughly test screen, camera, usb battery), here is why:
- Titanium Backup,
- AdFree
- Tasker
- disabling carier
- adding extra fonts
- adding my locale
- ...other screen tweaks that can't be achieved with non root devices

Well, it does include Motorola crap, which I can't disable. And the main reason for rooting is blocking ads, removing unwanted apps and optimizing phone cpu and memoryusage, no custom roms etc.
I will do it sooner or later, I just have to decide, root 4.3 or wait for 4.4.4 (as seems 4.4.2 is a crap).
Thanks for the suggestions guys, I think I'll try to keep it away from root for like a week. Coming from HTC One X, I really miss having AdAway, Xposed, tinted Status Bar, Greenify, and I'm curious to try that MotoGuide and GravityBox though.
Yeah, I'm not gonna do custom ROMs yet, just thinking of rooting it only.

If you have to be convinced then you don't need root.

Best answer yet I think!
I like this answer! But seriously, I'd want to know if adaway, greenify, xposed, and gravitybox is worth it for the phone. But I don't know, maybe I'll give a week of staying in stock and see how it goes.

Honestly this phone gets awesome battery life so I don't think greenify would be necessary however I'm with everyone else, I might root my fiancés just to throw adaway on it I personally haven't even rooted my nexus 5 or 7 though and have rooted every other device I've come in contact with. I just think stock android is too nice and it just works without having to worry about force closes and other things that come up with rooting

Rooting does not cause force closes...Rom glitches do...or bad apps or settings.
Without root you can't get rid of ads, debloat or customize and add features with xposed.
But if someone didn't care about any of that ....then yes, no need to root.

I should of been more clear no, rooting does not lead to that but if you go into the realm anything a little experimental or even running Roms like CM you are more than likely going to have issues where you can't always just pick up your phone and not worry about anything. I used to be the flashaholic that flashed Roms and tinkered constantly but if you actually have a life, job, kids you run out of time to deal with that. So, all I'm saying is decide what's more important

Root or not yet?

Should I really root my note 3 or need yet?
I Faced so many hard times routing my Sgs+ now I really find the phone itself so good with latest android version so what rott can add more hour such device

I had the same problem. I bought my note 3 in December and since then I was thinking about rooting. Finally, few days ago I finally decided to root my phone. And to be honest, now I feel like I have a new phone. Finally I could install apps like SD maid, greenify, Wanam, I could freeze/uninstall all this bloatware I have never been using like Knox, printing services etc. Now I have full control over my phone and I don't regret rooting and voiding my varranty (I used cf auto root)
My battery is a lot better now too!
Thinking right now about flashing a custom kernel to improve my phone even more.
If you don't worry too much about varranty, i would recommend rooting this phone. Even though this phone is one of the fastest devices now, there is still room for improvements.

I also haven't rooted yet - will wait until Samsung officially stop providing updates... I don't want to have to flash ota updates
There really is no downside to rooting, if you know what you are doing.
It can only help your phone IMO
I'm caught in limbo too. I've rooted every Android device I've had and that is a lot of handsets. For me just to remove bloat and put a decent ad blocker on makes it all worth while. However, when it came to selling my Note 2 I noticed how hard it was to sell my device rooted. The only time I got any interest was when I completely returned it to stock and reset the flash counter etc. As this is currently not possible as I'm on 4.4.2 then I'm sat very much on the fence. I don't want a device that has no resale value but I wan't all that root has to offer.
I am broadly very happy with the phone. The battery is remarkable and it's as snappy as I need. but I am inching towards the rash decision to flash away and root. TBH the bloat stuff isn't bothering me and KitKat makes it easy to freeze apps... but I really detest all the adds in the browser and adds when using YouTube. If there was a non rooted solution for adds I doubt I'd even bother. The custom ROM scene is fairly ho hum by the look of it if you wan't to keep S-Pen functionality so which way to go?
Root it -> Install Custom ROM and Kernel
Don't wuss out after you start rooting, they joy of the scene are the new things developers can put into the device to enhance the experience.
The KNOX is your only thing you should think about, but once the tables are turned, go all the way in.
The battery may be friendly at first, but it can't be as friendly as a custom kernel built upon the basis of battery saving.

Best way for non-rooted users is using "Static DNS for WiFi" with FoolDNS's servers, unfortunately only on WiFi, but it's something:

You won't lose your warranty because rooting or changing system software does not directly void your warranty i.e if you rooted and flashed a ROM, then a repair was needed, Samsung have to prove that rooting or changing the system software was the direct cause of the malfunction, if they can't then they are obliged to fix the problem at no cost to you under statutory law.

Even if that's the case in your country of residence there is still a risk of being denied if you trip knox. You then face a lengthy dispute process to get them to honour it. In the mean time you are either without phone or have to pay for the repair.

Huawei's decision to use its own memory manager....

Ok, so this was a huge problem on the Mediapad X1. Where huawei's memory manager kills apps in the background. Why do we need task killers today Huawei? Please stop
On the Mediapad X1 there were a bunch of apps like Google Hangouts that would get killed even though you tell it not to get killed via "Protected Apps", having your texting app not run in the background is bad as you can imagine. So now I have an X2 and it seems like this Protected App thing actually works better, however I noticed today that the bluetooth services were getting killed in the background as it would not pair with my car until I turned on the screen. Because these are built in services you can't "Protect" them.
Just posting this here so hopefully Huawei can see it and fix it
But seriously, they should just use the memory manager built into android and not try to monkey around with, we don't need task killers any more.

I am on an X2 now and yes, it appears to be working so far (Using SimplyText), I've only had the phone for 2 days however so I am still testing, but this was the main reason I almost didn't buy and X2 because of apps shutting down all the time on my X1 in the background.
What tweaks are normally required?

I have had Textra recommended to me as a work-around for MMS texting glitches. I am used to that now and will try it but if I have problems I will try your app. By tweaks I just meant that so much of what most of you do is not what a "regular" cell phone user would know. I had no idea there were memory manager things I might need to address. (I haven't done that before). That is why I am here. To learn about new things and to be prepared as much as possible for when (at this point it is "if") my 702L gets here!

You have to go into startup manager and check each app, protected apps and trust each application, add it to startup, and in permission manager you have to trust each application. I agree though, I wish this didn't exist as there's no need for it. If you're rooted you can take it out but you'll lose the Do Not Disturb mode as it is baked into it.

I was rooted on the X1 and getting rid of the Power Manager still made stuff die in the background, it was pretty irritating. So far with the X2 it mostly works. As far as I can tell only bluetooth dies (Which I can't add to any of those apps as its a system app)
The X2 is such a better phone than the X1. I hope Huawei keeps on top of bug fixes. With a generic android memory manager this phone would be truly awesome.

I got my X2 today from fashioncoconuts on eBay and everything is good. It even came unlocked. I'm liking these eBay sellers.
Edit: after I did a factory reset it said the bootloader was locked. Now when I use Google Maps it tells me I must update my Google Play Services. When I do my Google Account Disappears and my Play Store doesn't open. I'm beginning to dislike Huawei's implementation of their apps. Blocking certain apps from being installed is totally lame on Huawei's part. Now the waiting game begins for my unlock code. I'm giving them three days. If not both phones are going on eBay and I'm done with Huawei. Rant over.

Yeah. They told me they shipped it out on the 5th and didn't until the 15th. Now I know why. They raised the price too right after I bought it. A lot of these eBay sellers jack the price up way too high. No one should pay more than $399 for it. I'm just glad it came already unlocked. It seems Huawei is no longer sending emails to people with the unlock codes anymore.

Ok, this morning bluetooth connect up fine (I'm on B108)
But I noticed the Lux (screen brightness app) had stopped in the background.
Services shutting down in the background was a huge issue on the X1 and for the most part seems to work on the X2 but it seems some things still get killed in the background once in a while even though they are "Protected Apps"
I'll keep monitoring and see if I notice anything else...

Would there be a point in rooting this?

I've been rooting phones since the days of the htc hero. Recently, I've noticed with Marshmallow and Nougat even more so, there is less reason to root other than small issues such as uninstalling unwanted system apps and installing apps such as titanium backup. However with rooting comes the issue of making it difficult to update the software when an official update comes through, other than going through a hurdle.
Do you guys think that now with Nougat, does the cons of rooting outweigh the pros of rooting?
I would like to root if only to theme the device (not a fan of Huawei's theme engine)
To be honest I don't think that's necessary

The biggest plus of root is the adblocker....
I only use root for titanium backup and for a adblocker. So yeah, that would be a reason for me. Also removing bloatware is nice.

Root all my device's: Adaway, Titanium, Kernel Auditor, Roms, Mods, Solid Explorer, Build Prop, etc....
And don't forget VIPER4Android.
I'm not sure to be able to live without on my new Mate 9.
Every device should be pre-rooted by default. Especially expensive devices like mate 9.

I have rooted most of my devices but I will keep this one stock for a while. I just do need to root but I get that some people do.
I used to root all my phones up until about a year ago. I miss Titanium Backup but these days many apps use cloud backup for settings and Google makes a good job of restoring apps quickly in the background.
The only other main reason I rooted was ad blocking. But then I discovered Adguard. I paid for a lifetime subscription (really cheap actually) and it works pretty much flawlessly.
With Nougat (and Marshmallow) the system and functions are so much more efficient and features are now built in that used to require root. And now it's just too much hassle, along with a risk of bricking, voiding warranty, not getting updates and causing problems with some apps (like banking or VOD) So rooting for little gain is something I just don't bother with now.

I agree with you. I haven't rooted my phone for the first time, and amazingly haven't felt the need to do so. The Mate 9 is a great phone.
All the problems I'm reading about on this site come from people who have rooted their phones, (a potential Pandora's box) and it's not a great advert for Huawei.

My internet banking apps and my subscription satellite streaming app will detect root and will not work as I found when I rooted my Mate 7 (so I got the Mate 9 and not rooting it)

You can't use a rooted phone on ANY banking App. Nor any App that guarantees secure transactions.
Infact, of you do not use fingerprint (or any other secure mode on the Mate 9 i.e. Password etc), it will refuse to permit secure app transactions and send you to the desktop sites on your browser.

My previous phone, a Galaxy Note 3, is rooted and I run all my banking apps on it. And it doesn't have a fingerprint sensor or anything but a pattern password and I've had no issues.
Would like to root my Mate 9 just to get TiBU working but it's not looking too promising, based on the many problem reports.
