Tablet always running when docked - Asus Transformer TF700

I have an employee who we purchased a TF700 and dock back a few months back. Worked fine up till recently. After the JB update he seems to be having a strange issue, where the TF700 seems to be always running while docked even when closed and the tablet is supposedly asleep. The dock is hot to the touch on the bottom where the battery is, and the battery is competely depleted when he goes to use it the next morning. The screen does go into sleep mode, but something seems to be running constantly and depleting the battery. This does not happen when undocked. Any ideas what it could be or what he could try. Is there a keyboard firmware update for after JB.
Not sure where to start.
Thanks
Michael

Try to freeze the Map app if you rooted and have Titinium installed, if you go to settings -> app --> uninstall the Map update. Let me know if this helps.

Thanks. Actually he took it home and deleted a bunch of apps he wasn't using and a wallpaper and then rebooted the unit and the problem worked itself out. We don't know which app was the culpret, but now it seems to be behaving fine. If he has any more issues I will tell him to look into the map update. He doesn't have the unit rooted though.
Thanks,
Michael

[Q] Is mine defective?

Hi, just got my TF this morning. What a great device! Just wondering if you think this is normal. Within the first hour of use it locked up twice, once while in Google maps and once while just browsing the net. It just went to a blank unresponsive wall paper. I held the power button to force it off to reset. Has anyone else had this kind of thing happen?

Have you applied the latest update ? mine was a little buggy 'out of the box' but the latest updates have made it hugely more stable ..... and thats honeycomb bugs not Asus hardware issues generally .....
It performed one update but I can't honestly say if it was before or after the lock ups

id keep an eye on it now then .... software lockups are unlikely to be hardware based problems. make sure the apps in question (eg Google maps) are all the latest version too.
The good thing about the ASUS is that the OS id fairly vanilla (Asus have added a few widgets) meaning that any software problems are likely to be Google issues that they will fix ....
I certainly wouldnt think you have a defective unit based on your experience so far.

Touchscreen unresponsive when dock is connected

After updating OTA the other day (I've always been on stock firmware), my tablet seemed to be working fine. However, once I connect the dock sections of my touchscreen become unresponsive. I can still scroll and click with the touchpad on my dock and parts of the touchscreen still work. This only started happening after the update - without the dock my touchscreen works perfectly (unless I connect the dock first, in which case I need to restart my tablet before the screen works again).
I'm not sure if this is an issue with the update or if anyone else has experienced the same problems. Hopefully someone will know what's up.
Any help is appreciated!
Edit: Was playing around a bit and realized I could "fix" it by locking/unlocking the tablet with the dock connected...so I suppose it's not a hardware issue but rather a problem with the new update.

After the 4.2 update, my tablet has also become totally incapable of working with the dock connected.
Everything stops working as soon as I connect it; Seems even worse than what you're experiencing.
I hope Asus knows this, because I am sure it has to do with their update, not my tablet
Mmmmhh... So far for quality control? I really do feel f r you guys, asn many of you will not have been able to unlock, and therefore cannot go the custom route. (Especially sad for you, adelancker, since your tablet was unlocked originally!)

with the dock connected? You can't
Without the dock connected, yes, and got no results
Hahaha, Asus really messed up good.
@MartyHulskemper I have been able to unlock after a lot of whining!
But still, the problem originated from before the unlocking itself...
But you might have given me an idea!!!!
I can try and:
1) make a nandroid
2) go back to 4.1 Cromi
3) connect the dock: see if that works
and then try to
4) flash 4.2 Cromi-X on it with the dock connected.
Maybe that'd help?

Did you apply the update with the dock detached?
Have you tried rebooting with the dock attached? If that does not solve it, I would reflash the last update with the tablet docked.

The update was applied without the dock. I tried a factory reset to no avail - although, cold-booting a few times seemed to make the problem less frequent. Restarting with the dock connected had no effect.
Strangely enough, I noticed the system bar lock was enabled by default (it was disabled before the update), once I disabled it again I noticed an immediate difference in the performance of my tablet. Much less frequent lag/unresponsiveness with the dock connected - No idea why this would make a difference though

I can say that I did that update to 4.2 without dock, I am afraid.
I have tried rebooting, but it just won't boot as long as the dock's connected...
I have the same thing* . Tried many things hard reset, cold boot, downgrade..but unfortunately nothing helps :/
Now I want to drain completely battery-especially in mobile dock
*The same thing means tablet is unresponsive when dock connected(I can't: boot with it, lock scren, neither make factory reset)
Fortunetly I still have warranty, but can't give it now, because I need it for holidays. So did you find something that could help me?
Temporary solution is downgrade to 4.1(10.4.2.20), then it doesn't lag and I can use USB port so I can have keyboard and mouse, but this isn't mobile solution.. (sometimes it also charges from dock-I think when tablet battery is below 90% , but when dock is connected to charger, then it charges whole time)
I don't remember if I made update with or without dock connected.

[Q] Screen tearing & distortion when left on all night as a bedside clock

I always left my Galaxy S4 on all night long with an orbiting clock, dimmest screen, as my bed side clock. Obviously that's much more optimal with an OLED screen where the black area is actually off. On the Nexus 5, the whole panel has to be on all night long.
Anyways, using Dock Clock Plus to dim the screen all the way and orbit the clock to avoid screen burn in, I have been using the Nexus 5 the same way. On all night long as my clock. It worked fine for a few weeks but the last two nights I've woken up to see the screen all distorted and crazy looking.
I have to unplug the phone and turn the screen off and then it comes back mostly ok. A reboot fixes it 100%...though other factors may be involved. See the attached pictures of my screen.
So...is my phone defective? It works perfectly phone all day long after this happens...I'm not sure what triggers the problem but SO FAR, it doesn't seem to affect me.
Is it simply that an LCD panel cannot be left on all night like this? Thoughts, suggestions, RMA, live with it, etc.??
Thanks!
I don't think you have to worry about screen burn on the N5. I do the same except I just leave the click and widgets in one place. I don't see this issue but I think it may be software.
Also it may be the widgets you ate using for the daydream thing as well as any custom launchers which maybe caching the screen incorrectly.

Thanks for the feedback.
I am using Nova Launcher Prime and the clock is Dock Clock Plus. Never had this issue with the same setup on my Galaxy S4.
Any thoughts on how I can test out your theory if I leave it on again tonight and trigger the same occurrence?
Thanks

Yeah,
For the launcher theory, right after you get this in the morning, go to Nova advanced settings and hit the restart Nova option.
For the widget, just try a different one. Maybe the default built-in clock.

Thanks for your ideas. I think Nova is, in fact, responsible.
When it happened again last night, I opened and restarted Nova and it fixed it 90%. Another restart and 100%. I think tonight I will try to launch Dash Clock Plus from the GEL launcher and see if that makes a difference...if not, I'll try downgrading Nova from the beta to the latest stable release. Lastly, if that doesn't work, then it might be Dock Clock Plus and I'll have to try another Dock Clock.
Thanks again!

So no issues at all last night after launching Dock Clock Plus from GEL launcher instead of Nova Prime.
Tonight I downgrade Nova Prime from beta to stable and test again, not using GEL.
If that works fine, I will try to replicate my problem by simply installing the beta again and seeing if it comes back tomorrow night.

So not quite what I expected last night.
I uninstalled Nova Beta and installed the stable release. I turned on Dock Clock Plus and went to bed.
I woke up in the middle of the night and noticed it was distorting again...not what I expected.
Even worse, though, once I turned it on, it totally locked up. I spent 20 minutes trying to get it to clear itself up. Several reboots, crashes, freezes, still no dice. I could not get it stable. I even managed to uninstall Nova completely and get to the GEL launcher and still nothing.
The distortion/freezing/crashing was happening even during bootup, to the Google logo...I got into recovery/bootloader and STILL it was distorting/freezing/crashing. I thought my phone was done because half the time I turned it on, it would distort until the entire screen was frozen and I'd have to hard reset.
Finally, the only cure that I found was time. Turn it off and leave it off for a few minutes and it worked better...though after a few minutes of use it distorting.
I think that somehow, something is overheating internally and causing the issue. I'm not sure if it could possibly be Nova that's causing that...but I now know that getting away from Nova does not actually FIX it. Also, the "blame it on the beta" idea is out the window as well.
If I'm brave, I'll try again tonight to just use the GEL launcher instead of either Nova and see what happens, though I'm scared at this point. Thinking about an RMA.

Definitely positively get it RMA. From what you just posted it looks like the screen connection is being affected by heat. Just get your data off of it before it goes dark completely.

[Q] Touchscreen Issues

I purchased my NVIDIA tablet yesterday but having problems with the responsiveness coming from sleep. About 1/5 of the time, my tablet will not respond to my finger/stylus. I always have to press the power button a few times to get it to work.
I have all the updates, including the recent update from yesterday. Is this defective?
Thanks in advance

I've had that many times during one single day. Had to literally reboot the thing 5 or 6 times that day. COMPLETELY NO RESPONSE FROM THE SCREEN, ONLY BUTTONS. Still have to clue what the deal was. Hasn't done it since, but the issue DOES exist. And yes, I bought from the very first batch, straight from Nvidia.
I've had this problem since day one. Also the tab crashes at random times and it getting ****ing annoying. Thinking of returning the thing. It's worse than useless. Turn the screen off and you can bet that i'll have to reboot to get the touchscreen working again.
Idk why this helped but it did. I switched from using philz touch recovery to cwm recovery...now screen works less than half the time I turn it back on. That's still better than never.
Sent from my SHIELD Tablet
I've never experienced this on Stock, Only on Pac-Man ROM and CM11. Either way it is very annoying.
This is a reaaallllllyy ghetto work around until the issue is solved, but the way I worked around it on CM11 is to have Tasker and Secure settings wake the device for a few seconds every 45 mins - 1 hour. Ever since I've had Tasker performing that task I've had no issues with the screen being unresponsive.
I have figured out how to fix the touchscreen issues. All you have to do is go under Settings>Apps>All Apps and find anything that ranges from Google Taiwanese or any Google foreign language app and disable it. There should be two of them. I haven't had any problems since I disabled them. :good:
I found something that has worked so far. I always use Nova launcher since it's my fav. I didn't think much of leaving the launcher that came with the rom. I went to titanium backup and froze the other launcher and it solved the touchscreen issue. This also fixed the app crashing problems most of the time. Still if I run more than two applications at the same time everything on the tab starts crashing. Seems to be a ram problem. I checked max backround processes and it's at "normal" which usually is fine. If anyone has a solution to the crash problem please let me know. Meanwhile i'll keep trying stuff.

Same problem here... Funnily enough I just wanted to try a custom rom to see whether this issue will be fixed and a new official upgrade to 7.0 came up - https://shield.nvidia.com/support/shield-tablet-k1/release-notes/1
Will see whether ithe problem is gone.
There was a time when my screen became a bit unresponsive. Very random. Calibrating the touch sensor fixed it up. Its a bit hidden but you'll find it by going into Settings>About Tablet (device)>Click on Model Number 3 times>The calibrating settings will pop up hit Touch then hit Start. It'll do it's thing and reboot. Hopefully it helps.

I had a similar issue with touchpoints not working near the corners, calibration fixed things for me also. It's pretty quick and easy to do so I urge you to try that before doing a factory reset.
So far so good... Android N seems to fix the problem

[Q] Is sleep of death common on this tablet?

I got this Tablet on Xmas. I rooted and updated, 1st thing, and began experiencing sleep of death (won't wake from sleep and you have to long press the power button to power down, then power back up the tablet again). I thought it might be due to rooting so I went back to the factory image through fastboot, flashing the original OS, recovery and everything and I still get sleep of death on this thing. I've got a new one coming from Tigerdirect but I'm wondering if this issue is common or not. I'm hoping not cause I can't find much info on it online. Thanks for any info.

I've been having this issue stock, no root. I feel like Nvidia left out some polishing. But I will say that I didn't have this issue before the 5.0.1 update.
I suspect constant sleep death to be a physical fault of some shield tablets. My first tablet had it occasionally, but my RMA replacement has never had it. Ever.
That being said, sleep death can be caused by some apps, too. Try to diagnose it assuming its an app running wild, if you cant track it down contact nvidia for a replacement.

Yep, I had this issue only after updating to 5.0.1 stock, no root. But after a few reboot cycles, the issue resolved itself.
I do not have this issue - its a LTE purchased on blackFriday. In fact I have NEVER had even a single app crash. I just rooted last week and no issues their either (on 5.01).
Have you tried doing a clean install?
Load CWM - Format all partitions
Then flash NVIDIA 1.2 recovery Image
Then upgrade to 5.01 (direct upgrade now - 5.0 is no longer an incremental from OTA).
if it still does this after a full wipe then I would suspect its hardware related.
Thanks for the input. I have formatted everything and the issue still persisted, I never did try staying on kitkat though. Is Kitkat still best for this tablet? I see a lot of people down on lollipop. I wonder if it would have worked itself out but a new one is on the way already. I just hope it's as good as this one in terms of light bleed and cracked corners. The one I have has the most minimal of bleeds in one corner and no cracks whatsoever.
You reformatted and reloaded 501 full?
I reflashed the Nvidia recovery image (1.2 KitKat) and it performed like a dog in comparison to 5.01... So I re-upgraded back to 5.01.
5.01 has a few glitches (battery stats, battery life in general, Graphical Corruption) but in general I have no stability issues and have no issues while its in a deep sleep.
Have you tried turning off wifi when the tablet is sleeping? Leaving WiFi running while in deep sleep seems to be a culprit of various issues. Try that..

I had the exact same problem. Factory reset did not resolve. Contacted Nvidia support and they told me to return for replacement. Thankfully I purchased mine through Amazon and they sent me a new one right away. No problems with the new tablet. I love this tablet!

Even though the solution seems to be getting a replacement, I'll post my scenario here in case it helps anyone identify their problem:
I have been having this sleep of death issue since I got the tablet with KitKat back in October, and it has persisted through the upgrade to Lollipop. It happens almost every other day at least. I have always run completely stock, no root or anything.
I've noticed this same issue on my tablet as well. It's not very frequent (maybe once every couple days). It is my 1st RMA, and I dont recall it happening before the 5.0.1 upgrade. If the next update doesn't fix the issue I will probably go for my 2nd RMA.
mine does it. It's infrequent, but it does it. Running 5.0.1.
Yea I have this problem on mine, I got mine the week the tablet came out so I am not surprised there are some faults here and there with mine.
Update
Got my replacement Shield from tigerdirect and haven't experienced the issue in the 3 days I've used it (knocks on wood). Running lollipop just like the previous tablet, same apps installed through TBU. The last one I had would sleep of death about 2-3 times a day or more depending on use. Very happy with the product now I wish all my android devices were so smooth. My Transformer infinity is now nothing but a Netflix machine during cardio at the gym.
Unsure if this is valid info or not but on the 1st tablet I rooted using towelroot on kitkat, then used flashify to boot cwm and installed lollipop through cwm. On the new/2nd tablet I upgraded to lollipop through normal software updates, then unlocked bootloader and rooted. I don't think this makes a difference as I flashed back to factory image and stock bootloader on the 1st tablet, then upgraded using the same process I did on the 2nd and still got sleep of death. It seems to be a hardware related issue but thought I'd share anyhow.
Have same problem on my tablet. I think this is more software problame than hardware. All my hopes too new update/
I am having this same problem. I am totally stock LTE model. Trying to single out an app but it is doing it multiple times a day sometimes which makes it difficult to single out an app that could be the culprit(that and not being rooted). Hoping they release an upgrade soon.
Edit: this sleep of death problem did not occur before 5.0.1 BTW.
I had the problem from the start in August, when I got it. actually quite annoying and frequently. Resolved when I did a factory reset on the last 4.4 OTA. After upgrading to 5.0 I have had performance issues and some sleep of deaths again. But I did not come around to do a factory reset again since I am too lazy to back everything up . I am not sure if it is solely hardware related since at least for me, the factory reset cleared my problems once...
Mine only SODs when I change the performance mode and don't reboot, if I reboot after changing the performance mode it's fine.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
I have it also.. On 5.0.1 here.. But I solved it when I installed "ultimate on off" I think it prevent the device to be on deep sleep.. Ultimate on off helps me with the annoying power button..
seems like I fixed it
I think I narrowed it down to the app Tegra Zone. It had crashed a few times but the service was still running in the background. Uninstalled and my battery is lasting a bit longer and it hasn't wake locked on me in over 24 hours. The service is probably gimping the tab in the background.
