Hi, been away from the forum, as i have just got back from holiday
i am having a prblem with my desire.. i went to florida, left my phone at the theme parks, desire s, zte blade, ipod touch in the car for 8 hours in around 30-40 degrees. since then, my desire s has been faulty.
my touch, and zte work fine, but my desire has a major problem now. it works normal in use, but when i lock it and put it into sleep mode, when i try to unlock it , it will start up the whole phone again. basically, it powers off on its on randomly in sleep mode.
The problem is really annoying. it is also very common on the desire hd..
http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...360GB360&q=htc+desire+hd+randomly+turning+off
Im running leedroid port from dhd. i thought the rom was the problem, but it isnt. i flashed other roms, hydrogen, but the problem still exists. shoud i test the stock unrooted ROM?
i dont think it is a software fault anyweay. the phone was working fine for 2 weeks running leedroid, then suddenly i have the problem now.
i have emailed htc, and awating a reply now. so will i need to get it repaired? or replaced as a faulty unit?
Hmm.....does sound like the heat has done it in....damn!
Although there are plenty of other countries where the temp is close to this all the time, you would have thought....
Try installing close to stock ROM with no apps installed, (Yes perform wipe). I'd suggest installing battery moniotr widget and get iot to log full details (including apps), force log in sleep mode so that you can at least see when it dies and what temp it's at when it does and what apps are running at the time.
Although does sound like warranty return issue (at least this way you get a new motherboard and possibly even a new device)...(you might want to check the recommended running temp levels in the warranty book first - just so that you get your story straight)
Positive note: at least its still functioning so that you can re-install RUU etc and mask S-OFF before returning it?
ps
Mines done this a couple of time over the last few months...although I always figured that I've hit the buttons in my pocket?

Cheers Ben! Love how your always here to help!
I'll try installing battery monitor widget , and go back to stock, s-on
So do you think it was the heat that damaged the phone? My ipod touch and zte blade were left in the car, but they work 100% fine
I've checked the warranty thingy, it says do not expose battery to 60 degrees or higher.
But to be honest, I dot really know how hot it could get in the car... Florida is very hot!
I'm just waiting for a reply from HTC now
The phone works fine everywhere else, its just this problem.. I tried cooling the phone by switching it off and taking the battery out, and leaving it for an hour.
The thing with this problem, is that it is entirely random! It sometimes last ages in standby before the problems occur, or within 10 minutes.
How can I prove it to HTC??
I wouldn't worry too much about your phone doing the same once in a few months or so
Mine is happening at least 6 times a day!!
I'll try to keep the thread updated to how it all goes
Cheers Ben

Hello,
Could have been the heat, but could simply be a faulty motherboard....either way a new device might be a good thing, 1/2 way through your warranty period.
Don't know how hot it gets in cars in Florida....but I know that it can kill pets let alone phones!
Cheers, not worried about my phone, just trying to relate that's all
You're just going to be have to forcefull in your email and exaggerate...even
best of luck

Though my phone was not left anywhere where temp was extreme, mine is also doing this since this week,, Also a few months old and I blame the apps installed . I ahd battery monitor and suspected just that prog..
I have not yet gone to a clean rom yet but selectively remove apps till I find improvement....
Meaning there are others with the same problem !

Yeh, some of them have the same problem after a couple if weeks old (not exposed to heat or anything) what causes this problem?
How often do u have this problem??
My old Nokia 5230 has the same problem
Mine has the same problem and has never been exposed to extreme heat. I think the power button is faulty and after some use it get stuck some times and closes the phone down. I started pressing the button with less force and the random power downs stopped happening.
What happened? I have not found a relationship yet. It seems random too me so far. If it happens once more i will go to factory default plain htc stock rom (i have not fiddled with the device or rom)
If it then happens as well i know enough. I will see and report me experience in due time.
Btw its android 2.3.3 build 1.47.401.4

To be honest, I think its more of a hardware problem!
My phone was running fine on stock and custom roms for 3 weeks, then it just started last week when I left my phone in the car
A lot if desire hd users had the same issue as us!
I'm awaiting a reply from HTC now
Will update on what they say.
the heat probably was the culprit
my phone reaches around 45c at times due to the high outside temperature here, but i don't have any problems so i guess yours was heated more
but if you can, try changing the battery it may help
Random shutdown
I also suffered from this. A new Radio + ROM + cleaning some apps has solved the problem.
Thanks for the replies everyone!
I received the following e-mail of HTC today:
Dear Oliver Loh,
Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Device.
I understand that you are currently experiencing difficulties with rebooting and random restarts.
I believe that the reason for this is because of a hardware issue.
In order to rectify this I would like you to perform the following actions:
) Make sure your device is fully up to date:
Menu - settings - about phone - system software update - tick box - check now.
) If possible test the device with or without a (new) battery, SIM, SD card.
To assist you further I have attached links to the HTC Support Site which will enable you to work through the above step by step:
http://www.htc.com/uk/support.aspx
Once the above has been completed you may be required to do a factory reset, for your convenience I have detailed the steps below:
) Restarting or factory resetting your phone:
Restarting your phone (soft reset):
If your phone is running slower than normal, an application is not performing properly, or your phone becomes unresponsive, try restarting your phone and see if that helps solve the problem.
Please remove the battery, wait for a few seconds, reinsert the battery, and then turn the phone on.
Performing a factory reset (hard reset):
Note: Factory reset will not remove the data and files that are in your phone’s microSD card.
Factory reset is not a step to be taken lightly. It will permanently delete all your data and customized settings, and will also remove any applications you've downloaded and installed. Be sure to back up any data and files you want to keep before you do a factory reset.
Performing a factory reset via settings
Performing a factory reset using phone buttons:
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the buttons on the phone.
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
2. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button..
3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE or (Factory Reset), and then press POWER.
4. Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset.
Should the above solution not resolve your query please can you confirm the following and reply to me:
1) Has the device been recently updated/upgraded or changed:?
2) Has a new application been recently downloaded:?
3) Please can you turn off all applications and UN-install any which are unessential, As they may be causing issues:?
4) What have you already done/tried to troubleshoot your issue/s:?
5) When did your issue/s occur or re occur:?
6) Is you device or applications fully up to date:?
Should the above fail to restore your device to full working order, the device (MAY) need to be sent for repair.
I hope that this information meets with your requirements, should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.
If this response has resolved your query, and you have no further questions please close this ticket by following the link below. Upon closure of the ticket you will be invited to complete our Customer Satisfaction Survey which should take no more than 1 minute to complete.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
Sincerely,
Robert

And today i can confirm the problem has occured 8 times today. Now it can do the problem up to 3 times in a row, when the device is in use.
It happened this morning 3 times, 2 in the afternoon, and as i am typing now, i just booted into recovery and the phone crashed on me twice at the recovery screen.
I will reply to HTC and tell them i have the stock rom etc, and will s-on my device and send it for repair soon hopefully
So what's your uptime since you changed??

If the problem persists through multiple ROMs, it definitely sounds like a hardware problem. I'd return it to stock and have it sent in for repair under warranty.
Haven't read all replies... but this is a well-known battery fault (and isn't necessarily triggered by either heat or humidity... it is most commonly a manufacturing defect).
My very first HTC Desire S handset had almost exactly the same issue, only the battery from that handset would power off the phone only when the GSM picked up a signal (I.E.... you get reception, but the phone kills itself instantly. No reception, phone ran fine).
O2 replaced the entire thing under warranty (but I sneakily kept the battery to prove my theory). I placed that battery into my replacement handset, and behold.... EXACTLY the same thing!
Put the new battery in, everything works perfectly.
Bottom line: don't replace the phone, just replace the battery!

Hmm.. it does make a bit more sense that the heat could have affected the battery rather than the phone itself.
The battery is probably unable to run under low power that is used when put in sleep mode so it just cuts itself out altogether.
My hypothesis...
i have the exact problem!!
i thought i was the only one... mine turns off at least 3-4 times a day for no apparent reason.
at first, i thought it was the heat during the summer.. but now that the temperature is getting milder i dont really think thats the cause.
sometimes when i place it on the desk and i tap it or just bump it hard enough it'll turn off.
i think its more of a hardware problem then software.

That's sounds like a bad battery connection, I'd take it back under warranty {if possible} as the chance of a fried eMMC chip must be high!
My Transformer has the same issues as everyone else; it's extremely laggy, apps crash, etc. But I also have this thing where every once in a while, if I click on something, my screen will go white with a line at the bottom and freeze. I have to restart the tablet to get it working again. I read through a lot of different threads and couldn't find anything. Is anyone else experiencing this?
I can't find any causes/solutions online. Any ideas?

I've had the same issue but haven't seen it in a couple days. I was told to cold boot it to solve the problem. After doing that, I haven't seen it again, but I haven't used it as much.
I am having the same issue. Started last night. Froze up first then a bit later went to white screen then rebooted. Today it froze up again...no white screen this time but could not access settings...the icon for settings was there but nothing else. Happen after reboot again...shut it down after that till now. Had been working fine. UPDATE is needed badly...I also have the Acer a700, that has been great so far...much better than this one.
Happened once to me too, i rebooted, and it has not happened since.

Haven't had the white screen return yet but I have had a recurring issue with freezing. Tablet was working last night when I put it down...this morning there was no internet connection. Went to settings to turn on wifi and it froze, just like before, only the settings logo and the word settings were visible. Received a message about the program not responding, my options were to close down or wait for program. When I got the white screen before it happened just as described above.
Here is the thing, installed the 9.4.5.26 20120720 firmware update earlier last night...I was hoping that was the fix for this issue but no such luck.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using xda app-developers app
I had a freezing issue only once.
I installed and used an app that ran in compatibility mode.
It started portrait and I think there was no landscape mode at all.
But I tried to turn the tab for that mode and that was that...
Crashed.
So maybe check for running apps that are not compatible ?
My unit had a burning smell come out of the speaker. Memory has been running consistently high 560 - 690 ram. Now I just got the "white screen of death".
Unit is going back for a replacement.
I have been having the same problem. The past couple of freezes occurred whil using google chrome. I have decided to send it back for a refund (thank you Amazon!)
Too bad, I had anticipated the arrival of this tablet for so long.
I returned my first one for tv snow but i did notice that you can wait it out 15seconds or so. Its almost like it is coming out of a deep sleep coma
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
Decided to send mine back today (froze again)... who knows how long before I get a replacement...I hope it has no issues or it will go back again and I will get another a700... which has been working great. Sucks because I have to suck up the cost of the screen protector...and buy another.

Asus tf700

Samsung Galaxy S3
Worst purchase ever!
I really like Andoid, I currently have a Galaxy S3 phone and I don't have any problems. I really wanted an Android tablet and with the higher resolution the Infinity seemed like the one to get. I have had it for a month and I think this purchase is one of the worst I ever made. With the keyboard and accessories I have around $1000 invested in a tablet that only works part time. It crashes at least once a day while doing different tasks. Just now it was just sitting there on the locked screen and the screen went to all white. Holding the power button didn't do any good and I had to use the reset button. I feel like I wasted my money and I don't know if I should avoid Asus products or if Android tablets suck, the problem might even be with Jelly Bean. I don't like Apple at all but I really wish I had bought an iPad.
this has happened to me three times in the last day, and each time while i tried to play an MP3 and read a Kobo book at the same time. (don't get me started on why a $500 tablet can't play music and display text AT THE SAME TIME. what the hell).
i'd start the track, load up kobo, and BOOM: white screen. i think i know why: all my music was in internal storage. for the hell of it, i moved all my tunes to the microSD card. and no more white screen, i can read and listen to tunes at the same time.
go figure.

I've been having this happen a lot. Essentially, I have two things happen:
1. In some app (Firefox, Redfin (we're house hunting), etc) and click something. Tablet freezes. Click something again, and it resets. The next thing you see is the black screen w/ Asus logo.
2. Same as above, but first you get a full white screen for ~10 seconds. THEN it reboots and you see the black screen w/ Asus logo.
It happens at least once an hour under heavy use of the tablet (lots of app switching, browsing the web, etc).
I have:
1. Cold booted.
2. Upgraded to JB.
3. After upgrading to JB, I reset cache and everything *multiple* times before installing all new apps.
Is this a known issue, or are the few people complaining about it just F'd?
I am seeing this too. Not sure what else to do with this issue?, Exchange? I want to believe this is software, but where does that leave me?

I have this issue under Jelly Bean, but never had it happen under ICS. If you are in the same boat, an exchange will likely not help. Your best bet is either to put on a different firmware, or get a different unit all together (ie, not Asus).

The problem is that Asus decided to use a cheap nand chip that has slow i/o speeds which causes the lag. It's not a problem with android. Have a look at a note 10.1 if you want to see a lag free tablet.
Still, I flashed a new rom, and its much improved. And no white screens so far with a few hours of use.
White screen is a known issue with JB, it's not hardware issue. We just have to wait for another update from Asus. They promised to release a new one soon to address, keyboard, wifi and camera issues, but did not mention about white screen issue. We just have to wait and see. If white screen issue is bothering you too much, just down grade back to .30.

i'm getting this white screen with heavy use - sometimes a couple times a day. never had the problem with ICS. definitely a post-JB thing. it's gotta be a software issue not a hardware problem. a fix will come. in the meantime.....
doody.
I should start by saying I'm not that new to android, but I am by no means an expert and have not been able to figure out how to get out of a very confusing situation.
My tf700 is currently running 4.1.1 Jelly Bean and the newest firmware version 10.4.4.23. Before the firmwarm update, I had unlocked my device thinking that I would try out some of the newer roms based on many recomendations from the facebook Infinity group. I never got around to rooting and installing TWRP, and a few days later I updated to the current stock firmware version manualy (downloading zip from website, flashing from stock recovery). Everything worked great for the first 2 days, and I had compeltely forgoten about rooting/romming thinking that the risks far outway the reward as my device was already near perfect. This morning my infinity began to act funny. Touch responseiveness was awfull (about 1/3 times I pressed, it would react) and it would sporadically stop charging while connected to a power supply. Some time later, while I was watching a flash video my screen turned completely blue and I force restarted it by holding the power button. From then on, I could not turn on my infinity and I tried EVERYTHING (pushing the reset button with a pin, trying a cold boot, holding power for 30 sec etc.). When i tried any of these combinations, the device would start vibrating and the vibrations would not stop. Also, the screen remained black the whole time and nothing I did would even get me a faint glimmer of any sort of screen response.
Has anyone had this sort of issue? I do not think this is a firmware problem seing as it worked fine for 2 days with this firmware and I am at a complete dead end as to what to do. Because I am unlocked, I can not send in my infinity for repair as my warranty is gone. Any help with this issue would be greatly apreciated!

Update:
I can now rarely get it to vibrate for even a second holding the power for a long long time. Screen does not come on at all. Looks completely dead.
By your description sounds like a dead or dying LCD.
Sadly RMAing to Asus may cost you out of pocket.
Where did you get the tablet and how long ago?

I was hoping it wouldn't lead to something like this. I got my tablet from Amazon around the first week of september. I have treated it very well.
I'm not quite sure how it could have burned out, my brightness is usualy <50% and I have used the super IPS+ more less time than I can count
on one hand. If this is the case, Is it possible that a technical problem like this would still be repaired on warranty seeing as it has nothing to do
with the bootloader?
Also I'm not sure how this explain the constant vibrating that does not turn off untill the battery runs out. The way I see it is you could be right, the tablet is trying to tell me it's not going to work, or there is really some kind of software glitch.
Have you ever had LCD problems with a tablet? any idea how much this could cost?

I've not had any manufacturing problems with my tab.
I don't see anything you may have done that caused the screen to go bad.
Sounds odd yet a few folks have had their tablet just start working again after seeing similar dead LCD's.
The vibrate thing is weird...almost like a bootloop with no screen.
There's a chance Asus may co-operate if you contact them for an RMA.
It's worth a shot...not sure if Asus has any standard repair rate for this sort of thing.
Curious do you see the back-lights in a darkened room?

I've not had any manufacturing problems with my tab.
I don't see anything you may have done that caused the screen to go bad.

Thanks for the advice, I have heard some terrifying stories of Asus customer support (never had a problem with them myself) and of devices just being completely lost in their care.
To answer your question, no the back lights are not visible at all. The only way I know the Infinity is somewhat alive is by the led coming on while charging and the somewhat random vibrating patterns that happen when trying to boot up.
I purchased my NVIDIA tablet yesterday but having problems with the responsiveness coming from sleep. About 1/5 of the time, my tablet will not respond to my finger/stylus. I always have to press the power button a few times to get it to work.
I have all the updates, including the recent update from yesterday. Is this defective?
Thanks in advance

I've never experienced any issues like this. Contact Nvidia Customer care.

I've had that many times during one single day. Had to literally reboot the thing 5 or 6 times that day. COMPLETELY NO RESPONSE FROM THE SCREEN, ONLY BUTTONS. Still have to clue what the deal was. Hasn't done it since, but the issue DOES exist. And yes, I bought from the very first batch, straight from Nvidia.
I've had this problem since day one. Also the tab crashes at random times and it getting ****ing annoying. Thinking of returning the thing. It's worse than useless. Turn the screen off and you can bet that i'll have to reboot to get the touchscreen working again.
Idk why this helped but it did. I switched from using philz touch recovery to cwm recovery...now screen works less than half the time I turn it back on. That's still better than never.

I've never experienced this on Stock, Only on Pac-Man ROM and CM11. Either way it is very annoying.
This is a reaaallllllyy ghetto work around until the issue is solved, but the way I worked around it on CM11 is to have Tasker and Secure settings wake the device for a few seconds every 45 mins - 1 hour. Ever since I've had Tasker performing that task I've had no issues with the screen being unresponsive.
I have figured out how to fix the touchscreen issues. All you have to do is go under Settings>Apps>All Apps and find anything that ranges from Google Taiwanese or any Google foreign language app and disable it. There should be two of them. I haven't had any problems since I disabled them. :good:
I found something that has worked so far. I always use Nova launcher since it's my fav. I didn't think much of leaving the launcher that came with the rom. I went to titanium backup and froze the other launcher and it solved the touchscreen issue. This also fixed the app crashing problems most of the time. Still if I run more than two applications at the same time everything on the tab starts crashing. Seems to be a ram problem. I checked max backround processes and it's at "normal" which usually is fine. If anyone has a solution to the crash problem please let me know. Meanwhile i'll keep trying stuff.

Same problem here... Funnily enough I just wanted to try a custom rom to see whether this issue will be fixed and a new official upgrade to 7.0 came up - https://shield.nvidia.com/support/shield-tablet-k1/release-notes/1
Will see whether ithe problem is gone.
There was a time when my screen became a bit unresponsive. Very random. Calibrating the touch sensor fixed it up. Its a bit hidden but you'll find it by going into Settings>About Tablet (device)>Click on Model Number 3 times>The calibrating settings will pop up hit Touch then hit Start. It'll do it's thing and reboot. Hopefully it helps.

I had a similar issue with touchpoints not working near the corners, calibration fixed things for me also. It's pretty quick and easy to do so I urge you to try that before doing a factory reset.
So far so good... Android N seems to fix the problem

I got this Tablet on Xmas. I rooted and updated, 1st thing, and began experiencing sleep of death (won't wake from sleep and you have to long press the power button to power down, then power back up the tablet again). I thought it might be due to rooting so I went back to the factory image through fastboot, flashing the original OS, recovery and everything and I still get sleep of death on this thing. I've got a new one coming from Tigerdirect but I'm wondering if this issue is common or not. I'm hoping not cause I can't find much info on it online. Thanks for any info.

I've been having this issue stock, no root. I feel like Nvidia left out some polishing. But I will say that I didn't have this issue before the 5.0.1 update.
I suspect constant sleep death to be a physical fault of some shield tablets. My first tablet had it occasionally, but my RMA replacement has never had it. Ever.
That being said, sleep death can be caused by some apps, too. Try to diagnose it assuming its an app running wild, if you cant track it down contact nvidia for a replacement.

Yep, I had this issue only after updating to 5.0.1 stock, no root. But after a few reboot cycles, the issue resolved itself.
I do not have this issue - its a LTE purchased on blackFriday. In fact I have NEVER had even a single app crash. I just rooted last week and no issues their either (on 5.01).
Have you tried doing a clean install?
Load CWM - Format all partitions
Then flash NVIDIA 1.2 recovery Image
Then upgrade to 5.01 (direct upgrade now - 5.0 is no longer an incremental from OTA).
if it still does this after a full wipe then I would suspect its hardware related.
Thanks for the input. I have formatted everything and the issue still persisted, I never did try staying on kitkat though. Is Kitkat still best for this tablet? I see a lot of people down on lollipop. I wonder if it would have worked itself out but a new one is on the way already. I just hope it's as good as this one in terms of light bleed and cracked corners. The one I have has the most minimal of bleeds in one corner and no cracks whatsoever.
You reformatted and reloaded 501 full?
I reflashed the Nvidia recovery image (1.2 KitKat) and it performed like a dog in comparison to 5.01... So I re-upgraded back to 5.01.
5.01 has a few glitches (battery stats, battery life in general, Graphical Corruption) but in general I have no stability issues and have no issues while its in a deep sleep.
Have you tried turning off wifi when the tablet is sleeping? Leaving WiFi running while in deep sleep seems to be a culprit of various issues. Try that..

I've tried everything you mentioned and more. Believe me, I wanted to keep this thing but nothing seems to work.

I had the exact same problem. Factory reset did not resolve. Contacted Nvidia support and they told me to return for replacement. Thankfully I purchased mine through Amazon and they sent me a new one right away. No problems with the new tablet. I love this tablet!

Even though the solution seems to be getting a replacement, I'll post my scenario here in case it helps anyone identify their problem:
I have been having this sleep of death issue since I got the tablet with KitKat back in October, and it has persisted through the upgrade to Lollipop. It happens almost every other day at least. I have always run completely stock, no root or anything.
I've noticed this same issue on my tablet as well. It's not very frequent (maybe once every couple days). It is my 1st RMA, and I dont recall it happening before the 5.0.1 upgrade. If the next update doesn't fix the issue I will probably go for my 2nd RMA.
mine does it. It's infrequent, but it does it. Running 5.0.1.
Yea I have this problem on mine, I got mine the week the tablet came out so I am not surprised there are some faults here and there with mine.
Update
Got my replacement Shield from tigerdirect and haven't experienced the issue in the 3 days I've used it (knocks on wood). Running lollipop just like the previous tablet, same apps installed through TBU. The last one I had would sleep of death about 2-3 times a day or more depending on use. Very happy with the product now I wish all my android devices were so smooth. My Transformer infinity is now nothing but a Netflix machine during cardio at the gym.
Unsure if this is valid info or not but on the 1st tablet I rooted using towelroot on kitkat, then used flashify to boot cwm and installed lollipop through cwm. On the new/2nd tablet I upgraded to lollipop through normal software updates, then unlocked bootloader and rooted. I don't think this makes a difference as I flashed back to factory image and stock bootloader on the 1st tablet, then upgraded using the same process I did on the 2nd and still got sleep of death. It seems to be a hardware related issue but thought I'd share anyhow.
Have same problem on my tablet. I think this is more software problame than hardware. All my hopes too new update/
I am having this same problem. I am totally stock LTE model. Trying to single out an app but it is doing it multiple times a day sometimes which makes it difficult to single out an app that could be the culprit(that and not being rooted). Hoping they release an upgrade soon.
Edit: this sleep of death problem did not occur before 5.0.1 BTW.
I had the problem from the start in August, when I got it. actually quite annoying and frequently. Resolved when I did a factory reset on the last 4.4 OTA. After upgrading to 5.0 I have had performance issues and some sleep of deaths again. But I did not come around to do a factory reset again since I am too lazy to back everything up . I am not sure if it is solely hardware related since at least for me, the factory reset cleared my problems once...
Mine only SODs when I change the performance mode and don't reboot, if I reboot after changing the performance mode it's fine.

I have it also.. On 5.0.1 here.. But I solved it when I installed "ultimate on off" I think it prevent the device to be on deep sleep.. Ultimate on off helps me with the annoying power button..
seems like I fixed it
I think I narrowed it down to the app Tegra Zone. It had crashed a few times but the service was still running in the background. Uninstalled and my battery is lasting a bit longer and it hasn't wake locked on me in over 24 hours. The service is probably gimping the tab in the background.
