[Q] Best Custom Rom for Xoom - Wingray, wifi - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
First of all congrates and thanks to all the help you guys are providing (free of cost which is even more commendable).
I had my Xoom for a while but never got around to taking it apart (figuratively/software-wise) speaking
Finally i flashed it to stable build of 3.0 of EOS and now i have decided not to dispose of my XOOM ....
However the mere experience of changing the rom has raised many questions in my head which i was unable to find the answer for, which are :
1. Which custom Rom is better, EOS, CM etc. or more specifically which one is better for me. I have a laptop for gaming and dont do much gaming on XOOM, but i would like to have a tablet with as much as possible option of fast CPU (overclocking). I mainly use my XOOM for reading comics (ComicRAck), books (Aldiko), browsing (many browsers), movies and downloading (mainly through torrents), so in this context should i stay on stable EOS or go to CM or something else ?
2. Second question : a little bit of information on overclocking options in EOS, what are they "Governor" etc. and is there any effect of more speed like more battery usage etc. or vice versa if i underlock that is less battery usage?
3. I am unable to find the themes for EOS so will the themes of CM on google play will work on EOS?
Thanks guys in advance ....and bravo once again.

Unfortunately the mythical 'Best ROM' doesn't exist. What I suggest is try them all and see which fits your usage best. There aren't too many on Xoom and they are all pretty much the same give or take a few features. Nothing that will impact upon your usage example.
Governors Explained
AFAIK EOS has the CM Theme Engine built in, so you can use the same themes.
Regards.

Thanks man!
Was looking in Xoom forum only should have looked outside. By the way which ROM you are using ?

[Q] Best Rom for MT4GS?

I apologize as I'm sure there is another thread but I couldn't find it through the search. I am looking for suggestions on a custom ROM, Stability, Performance, Battery Life, Hopefully with increased jpeg quality, and full camera performance. I use my phone on WiFi quite a bit so it would be a plus if the rom had amplified the WiFi to like 15 or 20db.
I'm uncertain as to the development of ICS on this device, But I just came from ICS on my Optimus One which ultimately lead to my device being bricked randomly after beta testing. I absolutely loved ICS, but if the rom isn't stable enough to use as a daily driver then I would rather wait... (and by stable I mean past alpha status, functional beta is stable for me... I did tons of beta testing for Optimus One so I know what to expect as far as stability goes with works in progress)
So if you guys could link me to some of the best ROMS for this device it would be much appreciated.
Good question, this is my second rooted device so my exp. is limited, and ive tried several roms pyroice desensed 1.1.2 most recently and i couldnt get the web browser to load (which oobviously sux). But im runnin doubleshot lite and its pretty much the basic system debloated, and very stable

Which web browser were you using? I know that in the development for ICS for Optimus One, there was an issue with the stock browser and Cyanogenmod 9. I know that Opera or QQBrowser was their temporary solution.
My favorite rom is Bulletproof because it has all the features of our phone, and no bugs that I have noticed. I know alot of people prefer other roms because they are faster, or they are ics, but Bulletproof is the only one that hasn't cut out features, and it doesn't have alot of bugs....

Using the Bulletproof Rom, mostly because everything actually works.
Tried the an older Cyangen7 mod, but the battery got way too hot and could never charge beyond 40%
Tried the ICS rom and there are some apps that need to be re-sized, mounting the SD card as a flash drive doesnt work (not into paying 5$ for a widget), problems with wifi tethering to my wifes tablet.

Just for the record, skialaska, Blue6IX here is the one who created the Bulletproof ROM and I really have to agree with him on this. I feel that tbalden has been doing a great job of contributing a lot of time to multiple different ROMs for different demographics (sense vs nonsense vs cm9) and I really appreciate all of the effort that he has put into the development on this phone.
Personally, I don't like the Sense UI much, so Bulletproof isn't for me. I actually use tbalden's Pyroice desensed ROM. I do, however, respect greatly the amount of work that Blue6IX has put into developing a solid ROM and all the research into the limits of the machine in both speed and voltage.
If you can't respect the developers that donate all their free time to making our devices work better, then you probably don't belong here.

My apologies, I meant no disrespect. I just see Blue6IX on the posts and he's maintaining it. I didn't realize that it was created by romanbb.
At this point, I think skialaska is just trolling. Best ignore him and move on, methinks.
Whew, had to do some serious cleanup... I know, part of it is my fault, I've been away (70hr weeks will do that to you).
Anyhoo, let's not bicker lest I have to close this thread. These "Best ROM" threads are always very polarizing and full of personal opinion - let's do our best to not attack others work, and just state what we feel is best and why. No need to put down other builds/ROM's because you don't like 'em!

Hi WeekendsR2Short,
I couldn't find anywhere to mention this that I could post to since I'm a new member and can't post on the actual developer page for the Alien Mod Solar Flare that you created. I actually had more success with Play Store with the zip integrated with the GApps.
First off, I highly recommend this mod to anyone because of it's amazing speed. I installed it as an upgrade from 2.3.4 and I really don't want to go back. So, I want to keep it, but I've run into some problems that I need your help with. I hope I don't get banned or anything for posting this here. My apologies if this should go somewhere else.
1. Any web browser I use, stock or dolphin mini, crash after accessing pages. Chrome installs, but crashes when I load a page "Unfortunately, Chrome has stopped."
2. When loading, Netflix goes back to my apps list after a second on the red splash screen.
Steps taken during install:
1. Formatted sd card to ext4
2. Then I followed the install instructions listed on the main page in red and black using "AlienMod Solar Flare Series V XXX 4.1.2 (DS).zip" through clockwork mod
3. After the install, I "Then flush Dalvik & fix permissions" according to your later instructions.
Could my crashing apps be related to flash content not loading? I'm really stumped here.
Thanks again for your hard work and I truly appreciate any input because I really don't want to use any other rom!
Yeah, there was a browser issue that popped up for a few people. It just kinda appeared in the port & I never could figure out what it was or why it wasn't consistent. As for the apps....shoot give it a try your way. Then the next time thru recovery just flush dalvik & reset permissions then.
Good JB Roms
Just wanted to drop a line for other non-devs who may be experimenting with JB Roms, and share my experiences. A couple months back, I was using only SilverL ROMS (swapping back and forth between CM 10 and AOKP). SilverL is doing some great work and still highly stable. I've been playing with tbalden's CM 10.1 rom recently though, because it is finally as stable as SilverL's and seems to have slightly better battery life and the camera seems sharper--also good video playback.
If you're looking for a more blingy ROM, WeekendsR2Short's recent PACMan release looks excellent, and has the coveted Rings widget as stock. I loved the look, but the settings UI was awkward with the split screen, and I kept having the settings crash if I tried to manage storage. Still, sweet ROM if you like the visuals over some (admittedly very minor) functionality.
All in all, I think all three of these devs deserve serious props for the progress they've made in these last short weeks. I am having a really hard time deciding between SilverL's AOKP (since I like the look) and TBalden's slightly more bulky CM10.1. I'm leaning toward tbalden just because I won't have to either splice in more ringtones or rely on SD access to get some decent ones. Arbitrary, I know. Kudos to all.
Cheers,
Wulf
P.S., on a side note, my 13-yr-old really wants to learn coding, and I thought AOSP or AOKP might be a good place to play. Any suggestions for getting him started?

Agreed, I've checked the forums on and off for months looking for stable daily driver mods without issues I felt would prohibit use of this phone compared to the stock roms, but the stuff out now with JB is damn usable. I've been using SilverL's unofficial CM10.1 for a little over 2 weeks myself as well, have seen little bugs already get fixed in that little time, and have almost 0 issues with it as a daily driver. Amazing, amazing work being done in this place. I'd been on stock GB fully locked non-rooted phone before this. Now that I saw more and more apps are finally requiring 4.X or higher I figured I'd check and see what's available here, and was not in the least disappointed! Kudos to all those involved in the hard work going on here!
The best rom is any stock optomized rom....at the same time sense gets dull and boring too look at so jb will liven it up but it will break features such as the crispy clean sense camera or internet passthrough fast boot time and others...depending on your outlook on things the best may be the one with more tweaks...or the most stable...all in all jb does things sense stock can't....sense stock also does things jb can't do...my battle is the sense camera...my how ide love it in a jb rom

[Q] New to transformers: rom/kernel/app advice

Hello,
I am coming from the Acer A500, which I really liked running flexreaper. Now I am looking at loading a custom ics rom for the Asus. I know there are lots of differences in roms like the acer so im looking for recommendations. Id like it to be fast (duh) and im big on widgets and making it look flashy, so a bare bones rom isnt for me. What would you recommend? Any custom kernels for it. I like the idea of overclocking. Finally, any must have apps specific to the asus that i should look at? Thanks for all your help!
I've found the Revolver 4 ROM quite stable. You can keep the tablet's functionality and customization pretty stock and it's one of the fastest ROMs available. Some of the other ROMs I've tried include the EOS and CM9 and have each displayed varying degrees of bugs currently, especially if you use the dock at all. When Revolver Parts comes available for Revolver 4, you'll get a lot more customization and the ability to try custom kernels when they show up for ICS.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
I second Revolver 4 1.3.1. I borked it up myself when I upgraded without a full wipe from Revolver 3.11.
If flashy and function featured is your goal go with Revolver 3 for now. It ran super fast for me with the O/C kernel from Pandatest and NO glitches. Revolver 4 ran fine once I installed it properly, but it felt limited in that there are no ICS kernels right now. I also experienced some strange battery drain.
At the moment I am testing CM9 with Cornerstone. Talk about flashy! Some annoying bugs but for me I might be willing to put up with them for this cornerstone app.

Assuming you don't care about Cornerstone, it's either Revolver http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518768 or Codename Android http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1534648
Since you said you like to customize, Codename Android might be a better option for you right now. It has several built-in customization options that other ROMs don't have.
Custom kernels and overclocking isn't possible until Asus releases the kernel source. We don't know when but they probably will release it like they did for Honeycomb.
Thanks for the responses. Ill start with revolver and check out codename android as well.
I should ask, is there some pros and cons listed about cornerstone? It wasnt an option on the a500 so im not too familiar with it other than being for multitasking.
I am getting used to cornerstone. I really like the ability to chat with my wife and browse the web simultaneously. I'm in afghanistan so our internet is really slow. It sux to type a sentence and go back and forth between instances just to make sure Gtalk is still connected.
However, as noted by other comments, CM9 is a bit buggy in its support for the dock and feel. I've had a few random bugs that seem to fix themselves after a reboot never to return. For me, not having the ability to disable the trackpad sucks. I constantly hit it as i type. Almost all of the top row hotkeys are either not functioning or slow to respond.
I really wish revolver 4 was further along now. Revolver 3 really impressed me (spoiled me) to the point I always want that next ROM with more features.
Running revolver at the moment. It's a nice ROM, but these random reboots are annoying. Are any of these other ROMs, such as CM9, as flashy and feature rich? Just thinking of trying something else out to compare.
Thanks!

I'm running the CM9 without cornerstone and can't be happier. Actually, I could once theming and other misc tweaks are put into CM9, but the ROM is solid with amazing battery life. It is really snappy too. I just wish I could get a similar port for my Evo 4G, but I will have to wait until deck's release comes out of beta.

What differentiates an Asus ROM?

I keep hearing about how when you pick a ROM, you need to decide on either vanilla ICS or the Asus flavor.
What things does the Asus ROMs have that Megatron and AOKP doesn't? Is it just the couple widgets/apps/wallpapers that you can download separately anyway or is there more to it?
Thanks for your input!

The Asus based ROMs (I know of the two big ones, Revolver and Revolution HD) don't offer as many extras as the other ROMs that have e.g. a CM9 base. They may be a bit more stable, and they are not really different from the stock ROM (at least in terms of look and feel). What is unique: they have the original Asus customized settings, so they allow to Mao the mouse buttons, and have the extended notification area (both not present in stock ICS ROMs).
If you want to have the best of both worlds, I'd recommend the Megatron ROM which has a great set of nice options and tweaks (more than the standard Cyanogenmod tweaks), and also let you choose between ICS and Asus virtual buttons, and give you the Asus keyboard and the option to install Polaris Office, supernote, their live wallpaper and widgets...).
I loaded Revolver on mine and at first appearance, it looks basically the same. But as you use it, everything is smoother and faster. I went one step further and loaded a custom kernel by Guevor which made it smoother and faster yet. These 2 together have completely changed how I view & use my TF. Some people have had good results just by loading a custom kernel on the stock rom too. I would do a bit of reading through the forum to see what might work for you. Not every one has had good success when going the custom route, so do some digging and try to get all your questions answered before you start hacking.
You just lose a few ASUS customized settings, but you gain the AOSP settings, I like AOSP better, but some just don't like the feel:
E.G. Sense vs TouchWiz vs AOSP vs ??? vs Profit
Gummy ROM (nightlies) is my favorite AOSP rom so far. It's an AOSP rom with some features from CM9, some from AOKP, some of their own and some Asus stuff. Its the best of all the worlds.
Theres a link to my rom videos in my signature if it helps.
My 2 chosen roms are:
Asus based: Frozn by Jcarrz1 - theres a couple of little bugs and although its not fully completed, combine it with one of the overclock kernels and the speed is on a different level.
I posted up how to set it up in the Frozn thread. Hopefully Jcarrz is still working on Frozn as im sure if it turns out like Krakd then it will be sublime!. If its too much hassle then - Revolver for sure.
Aosp / Aokp: No question it would have to be Gummy nightly. Browsing speed is much faster imo than any of the TF roms, nice tweeks, the devs baked in some themes, stable.....it really is a must try. You also get the delight of the nyam cat but i wont spoil it for you. All i will say is you can switch it off in Gummy settings :victory:
Good for flashaholics with it getting almost nightly updates.
Everyones different and theres a rom for everyone.
Just make sure your backed up and read about how to get out of a pickle. Otherwise just give them all a go and see what you like.:good:
You may need to flash one of the Asus ones to get any updated firmware for the keyboard. I.m not sure the aosp ones will do that.
Sent from my XT910 using Tapatalk 2
Gummy has my attention. Does each update require a full wipe or just cache and dalvik? I do not want to have to do full wipes all the time.
I know I will most likely need to try all of these and see what I like most, but I'd prefer to have a good base to start from.
I pretty much only surf the web, get email, stupid stuff like that. Not really much for games outside of Draw Something, Hanging with Friends. Looking for a ROM that is "pretty" or "flashy". Needs to look good, flow quickly and smoothly when I use it, and is customizable so I can make it the way I want.

here is another rom to check out AOKPCB
looks really fancy basically is AOKP but themed. Haven't tried it yet though.
Im also in a situation on which rom to just stick with. Right now im using revolver because its based on stock firmware but i'm missing some AOSP. Was running Megatron a while back for a long time but i need a rom that gets updated every now and then.
Kinda feels like Megatron is laggier than the Asus ROMs. Anyone else find this? I did do a full wipe. Also, is there a way to increase the auto brightness value? It is awfully dim.
Otherwise, it is a great mix to get really everything that both variants have to offer. Really only missing the pretty power screen but everything else (and more) is there.
One hour later edit: This ROM is definitely laggy. I press to go into the menu and it's jerky. Really everything is... jerky. Ran a benchmark and had a good score (3200+) but the navigation throughout isn't fluid.

I have a B70 running Steel Droid v2. It's an AOKP based rom and I'm not having any lag issues. It might not necessarily be a hardware thing. Have you tried a custom kernel that you can overclock? I keep it oc'd at 1200MHz because I, personally, haven't seen a noticeable difference when I set it at a higher frequency.

New observation
I tried both Harmony v3 for aosp and Guevor 22.6 and get the same issues. I tried the new aokp Milestone 6 with both guevor 22.6 for aokp and Harmony aosp v3 but still get bad framerates in many games. One new observation from tonight: In the game "Siege Hero", if the option "Stretch to fill screen" is selected, I get bad framerates but great graphics. If I select "Zoom to fill screen", graphics are low res but everything is very fluid. This does not happen on asus based roms.
Another example of what I am getting is the game "Extreme skater" that does not offer compatibility choices, probably because it supports native resolution, but rarely stays fluid on aokp/cm9/aosp but runs great on asus based roms.
It looks like some other users are getting the same problems but we are not a lot complaining.
Any ideas?
I am on a B70KAS... TF101.

[Q] Best ROMs for P3110?

Hello, I decided to write this thread, your opinions in addition to knowledge and experience, I serve as a guideline for deciding on a particular ROM, I'm now with P3110XWBLH3 rooted, and what I want more than anything is overclocked, smoothness and stability, which is something ^ ^
Will include the following, as I see it is notably more:
Stock ICS 4.0.4
CM9
CM10
AOKP
If anyone suggests otherwise, of course included.
I hope your opinions.
Thank you.
I'm now on AOKP Build 4 and like it! But remember - if you need Samsung Apps you have to stay on a stock ROM...
IMHO it is Stock 4.0.4:
- Keyboard, Mouse and Bluetooth headset worked without any additional steps
- TouchWiz is really faster and no lagging when using it
- Good working time (For me battery enough approx two days)
- Nice small apps available all the time fand no matter what application or game launched (Splanner, task manager, calc)

You kidding me lol ? :silly:
AKOP Build 4 , blows any ROM out of the water. Read this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892049
Obvviously it progresses through the various builds, but you will see it get better and better as the thread goeson . The problem with asking about ROMs is that its down to personal opinion , Such as myself and Ailir; disagree , but dose not mean that either of us are right or wrong. The best thing to do is to flash them all and find one that works for you.
There is no "best ROM" , its all down to personal needs.....BUT JellyBean is a better option , no matter the what the ROM , be it a custom build or stock.
My 2 cents, not worth much but you did ask lol
AOKP кeview the best .. but I have a СM10, he likes me more ...

I agree...I love AOKP, and build 4 just keeps getting better, especially with the Over Clock Kernal. But it is really preference. For a long time I was pure CM, but after I gave AOKP a try I could never go back, just isn't the same.
Good Luck
Aokp build 4 then cm10 latest nightly

Nope not much you can do as they are a Samsung Stock exclusive and made to work on Stock ROMs. Its a pity as I really like some of the stock apps. Love the music/video player. I have been trying to fiddle with them for ages , cant get them signed or installed.
Installed cm10.1 with Dohllmen Kernel and works fine!

[Q] Havent flashed a ROM to my TF101 in almost 6 months, guidance on what to flash.

I gave my TF101 to my wife before Christmas, and I got a Nexus 7.
At the time I had a somewhat stable TeamEOS3 build, with Kat kernel. She has asked me to update it to help with some of the battery/hard reset issues and I honestly have no idea what to put on there.
I was curious if TeamEOS4 was the way to go? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2063406
Open to any ROM suggestions, however, dont want to limit it to just opinions on TeamEOS.
Does the included kernel suffice, or is there a good kernel to combine with TeamEOS4?
She isn't looking for the latest/greatest but something that will let he browse a lot of pages/tabs in Chrome, be stable, and good battery life.
Any guidance from you all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
I'd like to see a reply to this as well
I haven't tried that many ROMs except stock and TeamEOS' 4.1+ releases, however here's what I noticed through time:
- KAT kernel is the way to go
- KAT app makes the audio bugs manageable
- Battery life is pretty good (better than stock)
- SOD only when not plugged in (I noticed this last week - no SOD ever while plugged into power)
However, it appears that timduru isn't active anymore, or hasn't been in the past month, and he was the main developer for 4.x for this device. I don't see anything new on his page. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Team EOS 4.2.2, also I have the kernel which comes with the rom and don't have any thing else... I do not see any audio bug
