Unlocking worth it - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I just came from sprint using the HTC evo 4G lte. I couldn't stand there slow network and all the drop calls, but I did have it s off and rooted. I basically used root for tethering and some of the different themes. I really didn't want to use the cm10 cuz you lose the featured of the camera and sense image. I just bought the HTC one X through Atnt online and notice I have firmware 1.85, so I don't know if it's worth the whole hassle of unlocking the phone especially if you can't get s off. Also I noticed Atnt is more against rooting then sprint so it might be a problem especially since I don't have insurance on the phone. Thanks for your advice.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app

Yeah it's worth it to root your phone. And you better do it soon before your phone auto updates. You don't have to use a ROM like cm10, you could use a normal sense based ROM like CleanROM that will provide you with all the benefits of the stock interface plus performance enhancements.
And honestly, s off doesn't provide you with any more functionality then what you get after root. (yes I realize it can remove the relocked message, but who cares)

It was starting to auto update already but I postponed for install for another 8 hours... So I wonder if it will automatically install or will it ask me again...

From a user's standpoint, if you can already flash roms and radio who cares if you get s off? I mean, I'm sure you do since you like to tinker low level, but the op is perfectly happy not even rooting.

No one I have spoke to actually knows what that app does, however there are more loggers on the stock one (HTC feedback and smith.apk are 2 of them) so rooting and flashing a custom ROM is well worth it IMO

I've always had it on my SIM-free Sensation. Used to delete it from my custom ROMs but never been bothered about it

We have been scammed by HTC.

HTC allows us to unlock but does not allow total root capabilities.
What is the point of unlocking and losing warranty if the phone is not truly yours?
Love the One S LOTS! But why keep it if development will be hampered by HTC?
Not a Samsung fan but I guess it will be my next device. Maybe sooner than later if I can sell the One S or trade for a G-Nex.
Got the S cause of T-Mobile and want true aosp along with full root functions. Thought it would be no problem to get aosp but wow was I wrong! Sense sucks!
Thanks HTC for once again SUCKING! You are losing the ONES who truly love your devices!

I don't know, I think they have some insane hacking to get S-Off. I believe everything to achieve it on those devices has been patched. What I am trying to say is they have roms that are decent but it took them forever to get S-Off and their development was crippled by it.

399$ Nexus looking real good right now.
Don't do it man, I had a galaxy nexus and I miss AOSP but Samsung makes some plastic ass phones. It'll get better in due time. The One S has an advantage over the One X and maybe the SGSIII in that the European model and US model are exactly the same.

I hear you man. I have always praised HTC build quality over Samsung.
I do agree that the S is better than the X. Phone is a BEAST. Just wish it was not handcuffed to Sense
For now the best I can do is keep using Black Dragon Rom which "looks" for the most part aosp.

For AOSP, we have CM10, AOKP and Miui... Among others.

Our development is so much more than what other phones have. We have multiple great AOSP ROMs. None of which are broken, in my opinion, but I can see where you are coming from when you say things have come to a stop. It has slowed but I'm a patient person so I guess it didn't bother me too much.
i dont mind waiting at all because devs do an awesome job. I just hope if they get the One X+, we won't be forgotten!! :L I want to hold on to my evita for a while longer yet!
Hey, I'm sorry to threadjack a bit but I don't want to start a new one because this one is pretty basic. If I were to get a new One X that wasn't on the 2.2 OTA, unlock it's bootloader, root, and put some CM10 on it before it developing some stuck pixels or some manufacturer defect like that, how would I go about getting it into a condition in which the device support center folks won't process the return normally? This is very easy on the Inspire 4G
relock bootloader and run the 1.85 ruu. pretty much all you can do.

Great news. I swore off HTC because they were pushing out hardware so fast but they lured me back in with this device. When my next upgrade comes around...so long from now... it'll definitely be a nexus device. So tired of this bootloader game and the headache they cause.
Ugh. I had the hox before when it first came out and the bootloader was locked. I liked the phone but the multitasking stuff and the lack of space and the non- replaceable battery made me go back to the galaxy line. Well ive been missing my x lately so I was looking to get another one and obviously wanting one that can be unlocked to run roms and stuff. But now I see this one coming out. I'm curious would it be better to wait for this one? I do like the fact the battery is bigger and the phone space is bigger since u can't use an sd card. But I'm sure the bootloader will be locked up tight. Wonder if I'm not better off just finding a used hox. U guys ever run into issues with only having 16g?

I honestly have not had issues with storage. I use drop box for pics and videos and Google play music for my collection. Most other things I have on my tablet such as games and other apps. So storage for me is OK but it may not be for you. I to will be getting a nexus for my next device so I will be keeping the one xl until then. It has been a perfect device for me. While I'm still mad at HTC over my original tegra 3 one x, I can't help but lust over the x+. I've run out of storage on my one xl due to my music...kinda sucks. I'll wait to see how development pans out for the one xl first before making the jump though. It would seem 2.20 has our devs stuck. Wouldn't want to buy the x+ and be stuck with the stock att ROM!

haha lucky I got my bootloader unlocked a while ago. custom stuff is no problem for me. and it's a shame you've only got 16gb for the AT&T model. I've got an unbranded One XL so therefore i have 32gb
The One X+ looks like a pretty significant upgrade to me.
Just a question to those saying that they're gonna get the next Nexus - do you really want an LG made Android device and one that may be named the LG Optimus Nexus G? Rumor also has it that it will come with carrier bloat and a way to install LG's custom interface.
The Nexus phone being the flagship Android phone is no more. Google, sadly, isn't going in that direction anymore.

I read this on a google news search might be BS but I'd love it. And most phones usually get at the most one or two updates small or big doesn't matter too the companies, seeing as how they would want there customers to upgrade their phones in the name of making more money.

Its a tough call for me. Nexus devices are supported pretty darn well. I mean, nexus s got jellybean and it can barely run it. (read run it smoothly for longer than two weeks)
But on the other hand, I tried a phone with no sense available, and I realized how much I liked sense (even though I'm only on it like half the time)
But my point is, sense is the slickest, most coherent ui overlay, and that has got to take time to do properly. Yeah, yeah, they drag their heels so we upgrade...but in all fairness, I do think they put a lot of work into it.
I think in the end I've decided that a stable version of sense is worth two of aosp. That's just my personal opinion.
After a decent aosp jellybean was released for desire z, I found myself still running gb sense 2.1. It was just a great OS that was hard to fault.

Because HTC officially confirmed only for the international quad core version of the phone. Also, I have no clue who the person tweeting it is, hence why I put the question mark in the title. But it seems legit...
The "guy" is Football. It is spelled backwards since some issues in December.
A well respected source of info.
He leaked about 90% of the RUU's we have for our devices before he stopped doing that in December 2012.
He gives highly accurate info regarding the state of devices and their updates.
I believe he is a HTC employee with at least access to RUU's for both internal and public builds.

If you're rooted it doesn't really matter when AT&T releases it, just when the first carrier does or when it gets leaked. Still, I wouldn't expect it for a bit, probably not until the summer at the earliest. Unless HTC really is being truthful about updating their phones in a timely manner.

agreed, i'm so-so on sense 5, but would much rather have 4.2.2 if given the choice between one of the two software developments. 5 seems like it could bring about a new set of issues that sense has already worked out in the 4.x versions, but 4.2.2 stands to improve a lot of the little issues that 4.1.x is experiencing.

Then again, after leaving sense I'm glad I did. Not missing anything. I know Evita is the one x (as it says it on my boot loader), but is it the same code name for others? What about enverbous (I think)

Not officially. You can only remove it as the default home screen. But you can't disable it.

Both the One X and One XL have been updated to Sense 4+ officially, so not sure what you mean by "skipping Sense 4+". The only big thing is that they would be skipping 4.1.2 in favor of 4.2.2, which would make sense IMO
