I have the G2x right now and I keep considering the Sensation. The only thing that is stopping me is that the bootloader may be hard to crack. The devs have yet to do it for several devices and this may be the next. Will this stop you or are you still buying?

From what HTC leaks said, it will have a level of security like thunderbolt or incredible S.
If it's like thunderbolt it will be very easy to unlock, if it's like IS given the actual R&D of the devs...it ''may'' be unlocked once released if the IS method is working.
So it doesn't look like an impossible mission for our good devs
All the N1,Desire and DHD devs will work on it, very few are going towar the SGS2
Yes. It IS a deal-breaker for me. It was the only reason I didn't get the Incredible S two months ago.
So far it looks like the only way to unlock the Incredible S is with an XTC Clip and the last time I looked it was only working for some models.
Bin4ry may have made some headway on this but the last post I see from him with any new information on the matter was on the 26th of April when he said, "I said that i made progress YES, but i have not achieved anything."
TBH I've been having a terrible Android experience so far. Being on the Motorola Milestone, I still don' tknow what it's like to be on a fully free device... not to mention the 256mb RAM really CRIPPLES the entire experience of this phone.
So while the specs on these new phones are nice, I think I'd be getting a screwed up vision of Android once again if these phones never get unlocked. Somehow I had hoped Moto's bootloader would get cracked. Boy was I wrong.
The question is : why getting the risk ? there is plenty of unlocked bootloaders devices out there from LG and SE and even some better spec'd like the SGS2. LG and SE aren't very supported by devs but HTC and Samsung are the best supported one, so if a free bootloader is important for you and you don't even want to worry about dev support take an unlocked one
But for me it is not a dealbreaker as I'm getting both (SGS2 and Sensation), but for someone that will only pick one of the two you might have to think twice..

Still the kernel can't be changed. Keep in mind that a stable 2.2 rom wasn't possible until motorola released beta's of that rom. This due to the fact that the 2.2 rom didn't really want to work with the 2.1 kernel. Motorola isn't really great at writing kernels either.
I already know the next android version will probably won't work.

So it will be rootable and we can block ads, use apps requiring root, etc, just not load different ROMs?
Not overly concerned about custom Roms, but definitely want to be able to run some apps that require root.
If I am understanding this correctly my G2x is going back tonight.
I'm completely content to run a stock ROM if it's stable. I've never had occasion to root or put an alternative ROM on my Nexus One and all of my experiences with the HD2, G1, and Viewsonic G-Tablet ROMs have been mixed, Cyanogen or otherwise.
Definitely not a deal breaker.

Many sensation owners do not believe that S-off wil be coming by HTC. too all you disbelievers out there, i attach proof. Just spoke to a customer advisor right now. this is what i was told. i thought i would make a new thread as all the other threads get clogged up with off topic clutter, so please keep this topic related, and update it if we receive any more info on bootloaders. There is hope out there
Naturally i pencilled in my device number
I hope this is true, I mean it shouldn't be hard for them HTC to unlock their own bootloaders! Look at Motorola they did it. Hopefully it will be soon! Before fall I am keeping my fingers crossed!

I'm not really fussed with S-OFF as the internal memory is the only reason I rooted my Desire BUT it would be nice to remove the apps I don't use just to tidy things up a bit. That and put the stock boot animations on

If your a noob and you brick your device, you should be required to pay a fee for them to unbrick it. That should only be fair.
i think the noob will not unlock the bootloader, my oncle have a Desire and he don't know nothing about bootloader and flash, i do that for him....
That chat box doesn't say anything that hasn't already been said. It's just worded different. A waste of a thread that will do nothing but get peoples hopes up.
Nothing more than we already know. BTW, the earpiece will likely come back sounding the same.
I'm new to android.
Can someone clear this out for me:
* S-OFF means Bootloader unlocked?
* I'm asuming HTC will make an update for all devices which automatically unlocks the bootloader of any sensation? Or will the bootloader only be unlocked with the new devices?

Sure. But that's not what you said. You said, is it possible it's not working at all on branded devices. I was just wondering why you thought that might be the case. There is only a slight difference between a branded and unbranded ROM. Not massive. And the hardware is identical.

Why make it idiot proof? Just make it so it does not brick your phone.

Yea, but if you read at the bottom, tmo one s won't get it with the rest, it's bad enough having to wait on manufacturers to work the new version into their skin that they just haaave to have, but we also have to wait on the carrier to approve and add their extra layer of crap. I really wish they would all just give us the option to run vanilla android if we wanted without rooting. It does me up the wall. Ok I'm done ranting now.

You do have a choice.... its called get a Nexus!!! HTC/Samsung/Motorola/etc, always have, and always will add a skin to their phones. It's one of the reasons I bought my One S... For Sense!!!!! I never understood why people complain and ask companies to remove the one feature they add that is PURPOSELY added to help differentiate their phones from all the rest.
I prefer vanilla over sense. I bought the One S because of the excellent hardware, not because of sense. Still I would say that sense is better than vanilla for beginners. Some reasons:
1. Labels under every button so its behavior is clear. In some Google apps, for example Gmail, there are lots of buttons without labels and its not always clear what they do. Yes, I know I can long press to get description, but not everyone does.
2. More functionality included without third party apps. Why hasn't Google included something as basic as stopwatch in their clock app?
Theres probably more, but this is what I could think of now

Wow...been using Android for many years and just learned about this long press trick. I don't care about #2...I'd rather find an app that works the way I want it to rather than have some bloatware running in the background all the time.
I just came from sprint using the HTC evo 4G lte. I couldn't stand there slow network and all the drop calls, but I did have it s off and rooted. I basically used root for tethering and some of the different themes. I really didn't want to use the cm10 cuz you lose the featured of the camera and sense image. I just bought the HTC one X through Atnt online and notice I have firmware 1.85, so I don't know if it's worth the whole hassle of unlocking the phone especially if you can't get s off. Also I noticed Atnt is more against rooting then sprint so it might be a problem especially since I don't have insurance on the phone. Thanks for your advice.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Yeah it's worth it to root your phone. And you better do it soon before your phone auto updates. You don't have to use a ROM like cm10, you could use a normal sense based ROM like CleanROM that will provide you with all the benefits of the stock interface plus performance enhancements.
And honestly, s off doesn't provide you with any more functionality then what you get after root. (yes I realize it can remove the relocked message, but who cares)
