Fed up with this tablet - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have nothing but problems with this tablet all it does is reboot after reboot i have tried all the jb firmwares and the same happens. i think its so unfair you cant go back to ics even tho there where reboots with that it was less frequent. i think it must be a hardware fault as there are enough jb firmwares but not many people having issues with it . when i installed the deodexed stock rom everytime i pressed the power button it restarted so i put clean rom and that fixed that issue but still reboots about 10 times in an hour. i wish i got a galaxy tab now my friend has no problems with that.

Doesn't sound like common behaviour. I suggest you get it replaced

My TF300 is running great. No reboots, ever. Sounds like it is device specific.

do you think ad blockers can affect stability as i have now put [email protected] rom but not installed any system specific like adfree or root uninstaller only games and had no reboots yet so far 1 hour 33mins normally would of had about 10 by now also can alternative software keyboards cause it? i was using jellybean keyboard pro but at the mo im just using the stock asus one? is chrome a culprit as well i seem to find crashes when doing google searches and it freezes when i scroll down the screen?

I use adaway, chrome and swiftkey, never had any reboots. It might be that you had a bad flash or a hardware issue specific to your tablet

I have had the exact same problem. It is clearly a whole batch of them or something. There are many complaints of this around...
The product is still bad @$$... I love it.. but it sucks at the same time. It seems like it happens everytime I show it to someone or when I'm trying to use it for school work in a bad bad pinch... never fails to screw me...
or worse yet... it's like a hot little d!ck tease... looks so awesome, but I never get any!

Sounds like a bad internal flash memory, or perhaps just a couple of strategically crappy placed bad sectors of memory. Which is causing your tablet to crash after filling up with some apps and app caches. :-/
Either way, I'd say you have to return it to the store for service.

I think it was a waste of money for me.
I should of just got an android phone or a new laptop.

I've had GMail crash on me while retrieving mail for two accounts for the last two weeks. I've since changed to MailDroid which is working fine. I tried everything I could think of: cold reboots, app data wipes, factory resets -- I even flashed the new firmware in between -- and nothing helped. I'm glad that I now have one of the main functions of the tablet available again.

I've had the launcher problem quite a lot of times. Just restarting the launcher helps most of the times, but sometimes, it has cleared the screen immediately afterwards. Those times, a reboot has fixed the problem more long-term.

Oh no - the gmail and launcher issue sure do sound similar to the OpenGL issues that folks are having on the TF101 (since ICS upgrade)... I haven't run into that problem on the TF700 yet, but what you describe sure sounds familiar!
To be honest, my TF700 has been rock solid... I just hope it continues to stay that one - the TF101 was a disaster after the ICS upgrade...

I saw this issue this morning. I would open Gmail and then use it for a few seconds and it would just disappear. It didn't pop up a FC window or anything. I rebooted and the problem went away temporarily.
I haven't really seen the Launcher crash, but I have had a few random reboots.
I have not been noticing these problems on mine yet... I'll report back if that changes though.
yep, i just started having the issue with gmail today. it will open, load half way, and then close.
same here .
Edit. Cold boot fixed it.

I doubt the cold boot "fixed it". I'm sure it will crop up again.... Rebooting just temporarily clears up the problem. It sure sounds like the OpenGL issues that we have on the TF101 as well. If you are rooted, the next time it happens go to a shell prompt as root and type "logcat|grep -i opengl" and see if you see any OpenGL out of memory errors...

Same here. I was runnng Apex Launcher so I uninstalled it and went back to the standard launcher and haven't had any problems since, with the launcher. gMail is still a problem though. I did a cold boot and it seemed to help but after a day it started crashing out to a black screen again. Also still no error messages or Report dialogs popping up.
Hope someone at ASUS is looking into this. Email is probably the biggest app on a tablet. It is on mine at least.

I've had this issue too. (Gmail crashing or becoming unresponsive)
For me, the easiest fix is to use the Task Manager widget and click the "One Click Clean" button (even though I hate task managers). Gmail works like a champ after that.
Memory issue maybe?
Oh no. I literally just bought an infinity because I am sick to death of gmail being unusable on my prime ever since I bought it in February. Factory resets dont fix it, cold boots don't fix it. Sending it back to Asus to fix was useless.... If it crashes on my infinity too I am going to... well, cry or something.

I had this problem on the tf201. Im pretty confident that this boils down to sloppy OS programming caused by all the firmware updates.
GMail worked fine with the release of ICS, but then when the firmware updates began rolling out the issue started for me. I believe that ASUS, in attempting to correct the weak wifi and bluetooth problems caused by faulty hardware/design on the prime, as well as the wifi battery drain issue, youtube issues, browser issues, random reboot issues, screen tearing issues, etc., have completely screwed up the flow of the OS. Now it seems that everytime they 'fix' an issue, it actually breaks another -- this is a pretty well known fact.
With that said, I believe that this is the main reason behind the super fast release of Jelly Bean (6 Months after ICS release... think about it). It was wise to start from the ground up with JB and incorporate the correct programming to address ICS's problems before they finalize development of the OS... Hopefully the programmers of JB get it right for the Transformer series... But I believe the faults are in the ICS programming and the only reason why some people have the issue and others dont is simply due to the different combination of apps that each individual has on their own tablets... Its just a matter of time before someone else downloads an app that throws the OS for a curveball and causes the problem.... or it could just be flash... who knows, but I firmly believe its a software/firmware combination causing the problems...
I handle criticism well, so if anyone disagrees, please feel free to do so. However, this is just my opinion... It seems like people who are rooted dont have the same issues as those running stock, and for obvious reasons...
Maybe people who have the problem can list the apps they have on their tablets?
Gmail started crashing today on my infinity #*(&#(*#&$(*&#$(*&#$(*& I would KILL for a fix for this.

Gaming Issues

OK so I've had my Asus TF300T for 2 Days now n when ever I play a game that's high graphics they seem to crash n the screen flickers
So far games that are crashing are
GTA 3
Riptide GP
Heroes Call THD
Shadowgun THD
I really cba to download n pay for more games just to see em crash
Could it be the stock Rom ?
Been hearing bad optimization with the stock Rom and a lot of people have been unhappy with it
Would I be best contacting Asus or the place I bought it from
Or would rooting and installing a Custom Rom
be better ?

So its a common issue, most people are saying its a software issue not hardware and in that case I'll wait for a way to root my TF300T

i have been playing shadowgun and Dead trigger for the past month...quite a bit actually....and just in the last couple days i have noticed it starting to studder/freeze/crash on me....the only way i am able to play it is by dropping the graphics down to low or regular. not a huge deal since the "tegra 3" optimized graphics are a little cheesy to me.
Try using ram manager pro and set it to hard gaming haven't had a freeze since then. Before I used to do cold boot before playing to prevent freezes. So yeah it's a software problem.

to do a cold boot: turn your tablet off, press and hold the power AND the volume DOWN button until it powers on, you'll see something like "wipe" and an Android icon/picture, with some text on top, DO NOT touch or press anything, after about 10 seconds it will show something like "cold booting..." (i don't remember the exact words), just leave it there and it will boot like normally. -> basically you turn your tablet off, press and hold the power button AND the volume DOWN then it will show whatever images/text just ignore them and it will boot normally, the process happens very fast.
also i think this is for this tablet only, not for every android devices,
and i'm new to tablet too so correct me if i'm wrong
but i have this issue too, it doesn't always happen to me but sometimes it happens it just keeps crashing like that for the whole day, then the next day it's ok, maybe a software issue, i already started a thread before you lol http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828685

i downloaded the most recent tf700t ota update which was the .30 update and when i go back to the website. it is no longer there. any reasons why?? maybe they werent supposed to send it out yet?

Well I'm glad I'm on the WW version then because I never got it. Also noticed it was gone from the Site this morning and was wondering why...

I find your comment interesting since I did get the .30 update OTA and I had no issues with the update nor have I had any issues after it finished. It is interesting that Asus pulled the update though I will give you that.
UPDATE: Wanted to add that I did not get the .26 OTA and had to do a manual update using the downloaded file provided by Asus Service located on their site.
Wow, I must be one of the lucky ones, my Infinity has been running so much better since this update my bencharks even went up, I used to get about 13100 on Antutu and now I get about 13590, browser hasn't hung once and I haven't had any game crashes, except the usual Nvidia bug, **** I even plyed Heist on power saving mode all the way through.
Sorry for those having issues, but this machine is so much better then my Prime was it isn't even funny.
Honestly I haven't found any problems with 0.30 update yet. The browser is actually less prone to crashes than before (or at least that is what I can observe). Not sure if this update is creating problems for people, but for me everything is fine so far.
After downloading this update on the first day it was pushed, I have had no issues at all. In fact, it could be in my head but it feels a little snappy when opening apps.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Every update you are going to have some people who say it caused issues. FWIW, I got it and it has not introduced any major new issues for me. In other words my tablet still has a few stability issues but I can't tell if they are new since ASUS' ICS firmware has never been 100% stable for me. On top of this, you always find some buggy apps that may have some issue with the update you hadn't seen before.
The only thing I think that may be "new" is: I got some crashes on the stock browser which were fairly rare for me prior (including one that locked up the tab completely)... I decided to use it as a motivation to test out Firefox for Android and it seems to be running pretty well after several hours of continuous use. So, overall, I'd say I have no major problems with the update.
They could have pulled it because a lot of people seemed to have actual problems with the download and install. Anecdotal: seems like I've seen way more problem reports/"need help" posts on the forums than a typical patch level update. I've seen several brick reports, too, which seems way out of line. So maybe they needed to look at an installer issue before they put it back up.
On the other hand, if you haven't gotten it yet I wouldn't worry much, I'm not seeing anything I'd consider a major improvement, either. I don't care about face unlock. LOL.
I did benchmarks as well. My numbers went up exponentially. Seems snappier! No issues whatsoever. Improved my blue tooth and Netflix now works. I'm a happy camper.
Before this update, I was having occasional issues with Chrome freezing and needing to force close. I didn't originally have this problem so figured it had to do with a Chrome update (I have it set to auto update so I don't know if it's was updated or not but something changed). After recieving .30 though, I can't say I've had an issue with Chrome.
I will say that the task/notification bar keeps popping up unexpectedly. And that never happened before. The tablet can be sitting in the dock open and the screen on but not touched at all by me and eventually the task/notification bar opens on the bottom right. I'm assuming this is a .30 update issue. Anyone else see this?
Chiming in.
No problems after .30 here either.
Yea i havent had any problems what so ever. don't know why everyone else is...

I remember the prime's firmware was uploaded on their site and some people were getting their devices bricked. The next day, the firmware was removed from the site. Maybe this could be the same.
Guys, after the update, games has been freezing up on me. Even Agent dash. Maybe this is why it was pulled?

bs player fcs on me now, black market fcs on me, and most importantly FILE MANAGER HD force closes on me. the hell asus ? it was great before that
Have had multiple issues since the update (only had the Infinity for about 2 weeks, and new to Android so not sure if I had it long enough prior to the update for these to show but all where working fairly flawlessly before):
BS Player crashes as soon as I tried to play a file - "Loading files..." - after a lot of googling, switched off something in the options about loading files and seems to work OK now
Dice player has frozen a few times
The email that comes with it - froze on one account out of three and wouldn't swap over - after about a dozen cold boots seems to have been OK for the past 12 hours
Dead Trigger, Modern War and City Crime - all crashing and freezing regularly (had maybe 2 crashes prior to the update)
Boat Browser and the stock browser have had a few crashes
No issues since the latest OTA. It seems snappier and more stable. I am much happier!

When I first got the. 30 update my tablet started locking up and rebooting. It had never done that before the update. I did a cold boot and it still did it. I finally did a factory reset and now I haven't had any issues for the last two days. The tab is much snappier and browsing has improved.
I was having problems with MXplayer, Dice and BS player after the update. I uninstalled all three of them did a hard reset (vol down and power on) and then installed them again. Now they seem to be working fine. I know MX and BS just recently had updates as well. Now BS player has an offset for the audio and it's a great workaround for the BT lag!
anybody have a link to the updates? my ota failed and i cant wait to flash .30

Random Rebooting

So I've had my TF700 for almost a year now and I've always had a random reboot issue. Each patch would change, but recently I've upgraded to 4.1.1 Android version (Kernel: 3.1.10-0001) (Build: JRO03.us_epad-10.4.4.25-20121228) and have noticed that the tablet seems sluggish and I'm getting more reboots. Normally if I just read or websurf it wasn't bad. After about a week or so of constant use it would freeze or reboot.
However after the upgrade I've started playing a few games and the device seems to crawl when switching from one app to another (even in performance mode) and the reboots come randomly.
Is there any advice? Should I take it back to bestbuy and trade it in while it is still under warranty?

If you're not into rooting/custom rom etc. which will voids your warranty, you should take it back and exchange for another device like Samsung, nexus etc.., but not another tf700.

Due to Asus's design issue (slow flash memory was installed cause I/O bottle neck), it's not running well with stock rom. If you willing to unlock your device to use custom rom/kernel which make your device fast and smooth but will voids warranty. If you hold on to stock rom, you will be very frustrating about the slowness, stuttering and freezing. With tf700, if an app freeze or or hang (due to I/O poor design issue) will cause your device to reboot. Also a high percentage of hardware defects are to be considered, you better off go with Samsung or Nexus.

The answer is yes and no. There are multiple issues related to random rebooting. Possible reasons: JB software bug, bad apps, wifi driver and hardware. You won't know until you try to fix it. That's is why I recommend not to dive in since you already see "issue" with a brand new device. The risk is on your side more than the good.

Are there any particular tablets out there that somebody would recommend? I'm not a big fan of the Nexus, as nice as it is. I am kind of attached to my SD cards.
To be honest, there really isn't a good alternative if you want the keyboard-dock option.
Also, I'd be willing to bet that most TF700 owners don't have "random" reboots.
However, before unlocking your device, please tell us a little more about your setup - do you have tons of apps installed? What about apps like System Tuner? I'd recommend running as close to stock as possible (least apps installed) and see if the reboots still occur.
Just to clarify, you've had random reboots from day one of owning the device?

Just to add my two cents....
I bought a TF700 last summer. It was fine until the latest round of OTA upgrades from Asus in November or December; then I started getting random reboots as well, and the tablet became slow as a slug in molasses even in performance mode (which I have to set as soon as I boot in order to even get minimally-acceptable performance). I too hate to give up the keyboard and extra storage, but I have to admit this thing has been a disappointment.

Well the random reboots came after the second firmware upgrade. I kind of just figured that it had to deal with until the next firmware upgrade. I tend not to install a ton of applications on the device. I have the google apps (gmail, voice, talk, authenticator, drive, sky maps, skydrive, maps), Games (Rage of Bahamut, Transformers Legends, Tegra Zone), Books (Kindle, Adobe Reader, Comixology), Web (Youtube, Chrome, Netflix) and Kaspersky.
I have held off on the firmware upgrades until I was certain that there wouldn't be a major firmware upgrades coming down the line. The reboots weren't bad. Usually if I left the comixology, kindle, and ran mutliple games for a long time with the system would other slow down or lock up and I would just reboot. After this firmware it would just reboot if I opened a single app and shut off the screen. If it didn't reboot, when I unlocked the screen the device would just become incredibly slow.
I just got off the phone with Best Buy and they said the only thing I would be able to trade for is another TF700 with the warranty I have.

I'm going to be honest with saying I have been nervous about doing this before I talked to others to see if this was a normal event for the device.

I would definitely not call random rebooting "normal" for the TF700. Obviously, there are some folks that are having issues with random reboots, but I think that is a very small percentage. To be honest, you can do a google search for just about any device + "random reboot" and you'll get results for almost every device known to mankind. I also believe that the problem can usually be fixed by starting clean and slowly introducing your needed apps. Yes, it's a pain in the a$$ and you shouldn't need to do it, but I truly believe that most of these issue can be fixed with a little effort.

Is there an instruction manual for a clean installation?

First download Asus full frimware and unzip the zip file to the root of your microsdcard. Then go into settings -> backup and reset, tab on Factory data reset this will auto boot into your stock recovery and it will wipe data. OR you can boot into stock recovery and select "wipe data". Once done boot int recovery and just wait for few second, it you auto flash the Asus full firmware.

No, I haven't yet. I keep hoping there would be another OTA from Asus that would fix the problem. I've rooted my device, but that's all. I've not even installed recovery, and the bootloader is still locked. The reboots don't come often enough that they don't really bother me anymore. What really bugs me is that the tablet was working great until that pair of OTA's at the end of last year. Up till that time I had no reboots and everything was working smoothly. Like an idiot I installed them and now aside from the reboots the response lag is terrible. I can tap on the clock to bring up the menu and it can take up to 5 seconds before the menu even appears.
I'll get around to doing a fresh install one of these days, but I've been too busy.

I wouldn't count on it, since it is not a "known issue" with the TF700, as far as ASUS is concerned...

That might suggest it's an app compatibility issue introduced by the update -- I hope so for your sake. (I've had that happen a few times, too.)

Well... I would hardly call you an idiot for installing a manufacturer-provided update. I must admit I am slowly weening myself off of the Ï have to have the brandnewest bestest EVA update" because I have spent so much time fixing whatever issues a new update brought -- I am slowly beginning to understand the motto if it ain't broken, don't fix it.

Given you're still sporting stock unlocked, that's the only route available... for now. Once you unlock and go custom, you'll be happier. :good: Hold on, my friends.

Crashing every few minutes

My first post here. I've been lurking and learning for a year or more and this is the most knowledgeable place I know of.
I have the att version of this tablet and I am having serious crashing issues. I can use an app for about 20 minutes or so and it will blue screen and restart itself. After it happens once it will do it every few minutes until I leave it alone for a while. Sometimes I need to hard restart it and sometimes it will restart on its own but the screen doesn't come on. Only sound. As far as I can tell it's not overheating and this will happen even if I install nothing from the play store and just use the factory apps.
I have reset to factory many times and reinstalled the firmware with kies and that didn't help. I have returned the tablet to att for a replacement and I have the same problem with the replacement. I'm past the 14 days now and would need to return to Samsung but I don't want to do that if there is something I can do on my own.
Anyone else having these issues or can point me in the right direction to fix this?

I am sad to say that I am experiencing the same issue. I have noticed that I experience the issue more when playing games and / or when there is a lag in data transfer in an application. I can tell this usually when playing a game that is synchronized with the server I will experience the blue screen of death and when I restart and load the game again the game is several moves behind where I actually was. I usually don't experience this error in a lot of other applications especially word processing applications, but I have noticed that it is an issue. I assume its software related, and though it is frustrating, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.
For a short time I thought that it was related to frequent use of the touchscreen, but I'm not sure that this is true. I don't feel like mine restarts once every 20 minutes.
Sadly I have not found a solution to the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone needs any logs or system information; if you can tell me how to send it I would gladly send it.

Yes. It is very nice to know I'm not the only person having the issue.
20 minutes is really more of an average. Sometimes I can go longer without an issue but it is guaranteed it will crash.
You bring up a great point that I didn't notice. It is more frequent when it is an app that uses a lot of data.

No such issues on the international P905... Not in any of the games I play (It does 6 hours straight without issue) nor in data-heavy apps.
So it's likely AT&T-branded related.
My ATT version occasionally has a few apps that crash. I just restart and usually it's good. It is the same apps that do it so I don't thinks it the tablet.
I am experiencing the same thing on my P907. Can't seem to nail down the culprit.
Are any of you that are having this issue rooted?

I had the same issue then realized it was connected to Knox. I had 'Frozen' all Knox connected apps after I rooted an thought that might be it. I did a new root and it worked fine till I installed SuperSu which was not the issue specification but rather the fact that it disables Knox during the installation. I did one more clean wipe then when I rooted this time I just left Knox alone and I have had zero random reboots or crashes and I have not tripped Knox.
No, no root. Stock. I have minimised the frequency by switching from samsung keyboard to the swipe keyboard but it still occurs.

It happened when it was stock and it happens rooted. It's gotten to the point now that I went back to my iPad. I'm not liking the iPad since I've switched but I just can't use the note with it crashing all the time. I don't know what else to try.

I've seen a report or two about stability issues related to micro USB cards. If any of you are using one it may behoove you to try shutting down, removing the card and running without it for a while just to rule that out. Sometimes a corrupted card can do it when an application writes or reads from a particular location of the card. It's worth a shot.
Mine doesn't crash. But I feel it freezes occasionally. Itis actually subtle, but I can feel it. Especially, I certainly feel that my note 3 runs more smoothly then the note pro 12.2. Mine is a wifi version. Has anyone else got the same feeling? How can I optimize the device?

Do you use a microsd card? Most cards are really slow compared to internal memory. The Note Pro seems to install whatever it can on External-sd when adding a new app. Go into application manager to move all apps back to internal storage. See if that helps with the stutters and freezing.

All my apps are installed internally. I got some time to run the benchmark tests and the scores all seemed to be normal. However, in Antutu, the memory score of the note pro is about 60% of the score of note 3. Could the memory be the reason for the stutters?
So I called Samsung and I am sending it in for repair. As I said in my first post I already swapped for a new one at att and I have the same results so I'm not thrilled about sending this in just to have the same issues with whatever they send back to. Be it a new tablet or if they say mine is fixed. I didn't pay over $900 for something I can't use so I will get this resolved one way or another. I will report back when it's returned to me.

I think I may have licked it and not really sure why but I've gone from a dozen crashes a day to zero for the last few days. I went into Kies and did a Firmware Upgrade and told it to completely wipe out all of my data. It downloaded the firmware and reinstalled, I rerooted restored everything from Titanium Backup and its all good so far... Something to consider

im having the same problem. it occurs almost always when im playing games. I thought this device's hardware was top notvh for a tablet but it can only run on the lowest quality settings of most games. im very disappointed.
I experience this too, but it usually happens when the cover is open and it's on the back side of the device, it sometimes interact with magnetic sensor (some little movements of the case) and causes soft-reboot.
Nothing happens if cover is on the front side.
I should have my tablet back tonight or tomorrow depending on UPS. they sent me an email stating they replaced a component (whatever that is) and updated the software. We'll see if that fixes it.
