I love my TF700. I'd like to install JB on it, in the near future.
Before I do so, I'd like to know if I'll be able to root it after the install or if I *have to* root it before, while I am still running ICS.
I'll need to root it sooner or later. I just want to be sure that I can do it after the JB upgrade.
So, can I root it after I install JB ?
Thanks.
A more specific wording of the same question.

Hej there,
A simple question, cause I couldn't find the answer for myself: if I root my transformer, will I still be able to get the OTA updates or update with the downloaded support files from Asus (if I stay with the stock rom)?
Thanks!

Yes and no. If you stick with a stock ROM, you'll be able to download the OTAs/get notified about them. However, if you use ClockworkMod Recovery (which you really should) you won't be able to install the OTA. Well, it'll try but, it'll fail. The best bet is to be patient and one of the devs will release their versions of the new ROM.

It might depend which method you used to root, but I doubt it. I did the rooting via the 'pure root' method and I receive the notifications.
Since I just backed up after updating to 8.5.5.6, I decided to see what happened if I clicked on the upgrade nag notification, and all it did was say that it cancelled it, and does not nag me now.
I have no clue if it'll do the same for everyone. We all follow a lot of paths to generally the same place in rooting, so not sure. I did have an HTC incredible actually unroot itself via an update notification, so I removed the OTA Certification services.
Well, thanks to both of you for the clarification!
Additional question: after rooting, when I want to install an update, would it be possible to unroot and then install the update?

Yes. Just go into /system/app/ and delete superuser.apk. Just note that when you have root, you can't change a lot of the system files otherwise there will be problems with the OTA.
I would personally just rock custom ROMs. They get updated fast to the latest OTA. But that's just me.
Hi, this might be stupid to ask but I really need answer for this -
1. I know that with rooted stock OS one cannot get OTA updates, but can anybody get OTA updates with unlocked bootloader - non-rooted stock OS ?
2. Also all the guides I have found to unroot a xoom is asking to flash a stock OS, which will erase all the data & all the customization which I have made. Is there is no way possible to unroot the current rooted stock OS without losing out the small customization.
I came in here looking for the same answer... want to update, I'm rooted, but can't get it OTA this way.
Go to Development and the first post by stachre is rooted stock ICS 4.0.3, cwm flashable zip.
Thats just fr wifi, while i m on 3g build
Still waiting fr an answer :-(

You DONT need to unroot for to get a ota.
The ota is NOT out for the 3g version or any other version at this point.
If EVERYTHING else is stock besides root the ota will install.
The state of the bootloader does not matter either.
I think there's a chance to brick your device if you do an OTA update after you unlock your bootloader?
So if you really want to try 4.0 then I would recommend the TeamEOS roms, they have roms for both the wifi only and the 3G versions.
No there is no chance.

thanks matey , just 1 clarify require on your statement.
my mz601 xoom's current state is unlocked bootloader, cwm recovery, rooted with stock 3.2 OS with a small change in framework-res.apk to send sms.
for this situation also your point stands right?
No.
I put the word everything in caps for a reason.... nothing that is supposed to be there can be changed or deleted. Includes apks recovery.... you know everything
I wanted to post in the CM10 nightlies thread but I can't because I'm a new user.... Will the process outlined in the first post of that thread work with my tablet (stock unrooted locked JB)? Also, will the recovery.img from this thread work, or is that also ICS only? Lastly, will I have root once I flash CM10? I do know that the Asus unlock tool is not "officially" supported for JB, but it seems to work for most users, so I'm willing to give it a shot. I do have some experience with custom ROMs, but never had to deal with a locked bootloader before, so I may not be aware of all of the complications that can introduce. I just want to make sure I don't end up with a $400 paperweight. Thanks!
EDIT: I believe I found my answer, and unfortunately it looks like I can't flash CM10 once I go OTA JB If someone could confirm that would be good, though. source
EDIT2: It looks like it's really easy to flash Hydro from OTA JB, so I'm gonna go with that. I'll edit again with my results tonight in case anyone else is in the same situation as me

I have my TF300 since 16 august and i realy like the tablet . But i lost my root when i update to the new version because i did rootkeeper wrong. But i like the root ability to use my ps3 controller and other apps. And a custom build.prop for smoother gaming.
This is also my first ever android device and my first tablet. I'm also 15 years old.
Can you guys help me with the following:
Bootloader unlock? or wait for a new Root Method?
I realy don't wanna void the warrenty if there are to many risks for a noob to unlock etc.
And is installing a recovery and a custom rom difficult?
Are there tutorials for it? Or even easy ways?
Is the new root method during long?
Is it diffifult to find a new method or is the development slow or not there for the tf300 root with locked bootloader?
Thanks for your time!

if you really want root i think you will be waiting a while unless you go back to "stage 1" ICS. if that is even possible. From what i have seen, the TF300 dev support is not that great. however, you may want to look into the TF201 (transformer Prime) as their older root methods seem to work just fine for use tf300 folk. so maybe they have a root method for JB.
Ok thanks for your reply i will look in the tf201 forum.
EDIT: I looked on the tf201 forums and there are no root methods on jb with locked bl

Actually, you cannot root your device if it's in JB.
You can unlock with Asus tool, but if you don't want void your warranty.
Your last solution, you must waiting a development which can root your TF300 on JB
Well i want unlock it if i'm sure it does not get bricked. I saw something about NVFlash. Can i use it on jellybean?

Nobody will say that you cannot brick your device, but a lot of users have unlocked their tf300 with this tools in ICS or JB
Have you read completly the post ?
Before you get too excited, there are a few details you need to know before starting:
It will only work on UNLOCKED devices
It requires access to Fastboot to prepare device first time
It won’t work on fully bricked devices (See 2.)
You need to keep files safe!
If you upgraded to Offiical JB it *won’t* work!

ok thanks for your reply's
and i have read the thread fast and i only saw this : THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE A PRE-JB BOOTLOADER
and i dont know what pre-jb means.
so now i got my awnsers. And my decision is: i will wait for a new root method.

Let us know how long you hold out. I made it about 3 weeks after upgrading to JB and losing root... Seemed like forever too!
What is the best way to root device and still getting updates?
I don't want to install custom roms for now, need just root and that's it.
Thanks
If that's all you do, root, you'll still get the updates. You'll lose root when you update but it's easy to re-root. I'd look in the general forum stickies on how to root

Hi mate,
You can find rooting procedure here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507905

Doesn't seem like anyone mentioned this specifically, but yes, if you just root then you'll get the updates, but if the method you choose to root with involves changing the recovery to a custom one, then the update will fail. Make sure you stick (or go back to) with the stock recovery for prompt updates to work properly.
