I recently bought a 16gb SD card and its only showing 14 gigs. I know when you buy an sd card you won't get all of the space, but I've never bought one with 2 gigs missing. I was wondering if there was any way to get the full capacity?

If your phone is reporting 14.8 gb, then you have your "16gb" because that is about 16 billion bytes.

I don't follow, it says total capacity for the SD card is 14.8 gb. Shouldn't it be 16 or at least high 15's?

Take it easy, man !
1024KB = 1MB, and 1024MB = 1Gb.
Thinking again, 16Gb = 1024MB x 16 = 16384MB, but it's very odd, and the manufacturer don't want odd, so the manufacturer decided like this: 1000MB = 1Gb ( 16Gb = 16000MB ) and thus will lead to a lack of numbers ( when the true is "16gb = 16384MB" )
If your phone is reporting 14.8GB, just because your phone ( and every smartphone, HDD, USB, etc. ) memory is calculated by the Manufacturer ( Kingston, SeaGate, etc. ), and by Byte units. Don't worry man.
standards were set back in the day (when the loss was negligible). When working with kilobyte size hard drives. for instance, a 5 KB drive back then was actually just 5000 bytes. which, in reality is 4.88 KB (only a loss of 122 bytes, no biggie, right?)
in today's standard, its still measured the same way. a gigabyte is measured as 1,000,000,000 bytes (equaling 0.93 GB). literally, a gigabyte drive SHOULD be 1,073,741,824 bytes.
So, lets look at you 16 GB sd card... by industry standards, its actually 16,000,000,000 bytes. which is 15,625,000 KB, which is 15,258.79 MB, which is 14.9 GB (take 16,000,000,000, divide by 1024, divide that by 1024, and divide that by 1024).
Long story short, literal KB is 1024 bytes and they're being meausred as 1000 bytes. you're losing 24 bytes for every kilobyte

I rooted my inspire 4G phone, and installed CoreDroid_Desire_HD_GB_2.3.3_V5.4.
Today I noticed
in Quadrant => System Information, it shows:
Memory
Total: 636132kB <== only 600MB internal memory !?
Free: 54728KB
Inactive 182592kB
In Setting=>SD and Phone Storage,
I see SD card of Total Space: 7.39GB
but, Internal storage available space is only 640MB
In Android Booster, it shows:
Memory available: 156/621MB
Since AT&T website says that this phone is supposed to have 4GB internal memory and 8GB miscroSD card. According to what it shows above, is it really the case? What happened to the 4GB internal memory? I don't know how it was before I rooted the phone. Can anyone help? Thanks!
people still ask that question by the way before root it came with one gig try formating

You're mistaking ram for internal storage with these figures.
using root explorer:
cache: 290 mb
data: 1156,93 mb
system: 549,2 mb
Thats more than 1gb in use, but way less than 4gb.
where is the rest ? who knows
ps: ram MIGHT be reported as less than 768 because the GPU takes some for itself

Gpu takes ram, radio some, plus a few others.
Quick answer since this has been gone over many times in this forum alone. The phone has 4 gigs of internal storage, its formatted single layer, which is faster and more stable, but cuts the size in half. Now were down to 2 gigs of storage, and the OS and some other partitions reside here so take away a little less than a gig, and your down to a little over 1 gig of usable storage, which is exactly what we have.

Hi, just thought I'd create a thread for people buying the HTC Sensation, but also intend to buy a 32GB microSDHC.I will probably get a Class 10 type myself, but if anyone can link to lower class cards that out perform's Lexar's Class 10 card I, and others will be interested.
Please can we ignore any unknown brand cards, and anything relating to eBay. - As we know likely to be fake.
I found this card and if you have tried it, or are going to try it I will be interested in knowing how well it performs. As I intend to buy it for my new phone in a few weeks time.
£40...http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?origin=gbase10.5&prodID=2106472
What class is that card? It mentions class 10 in the description which is confusing, but that price is awesome if it is a class 10. In fact it's pretty good for a class 2 card!
[edit] just looked closer at that card and it is a class 10. wow!
That's either a misprice or a fake. No way should it be that cheap. Even on ebay those are nearly double the price....from HK!!
Anyone ordered one yet?
Legit company. Checkout 32gb card thread in galaxy s2 accessories thread.
Apparently no stock though. I googled the manufacturer number and it relates to Class 10.
You know something, I wonder if they have put a cheap price up just to drive alot of web traffic to his website. Maybe permanently out of stock. Will ring them tomorrow to find out.

I upgraded from a 16GB Sandisk "ultra" to Lexar 32GB class 10, I noticed a huge speed increase, now the photo gallery loads pictures much faster than before, copying files is faster and nandroid backup is MUCH faster (over 1GB data to backup)
I don't know if Lexar is the fastest but for the price and performance it's very good.
When you consider sandisk extreme class 10 normal sd,can write 20 or 30mb/sec it is quite slow, for a class 10, but beggars cant be choosers, and its fairly new tech for microsdhc i guess. UFS-I looks ace. Theres a toshiba 16gb microsdhc that does 20mb write. Can people find out if the Sensation is UFS-I conpatible? Bet price is significantly dearer though.

As a photographer I’ve been using Lexar cards for many years and find them very fast, solid and reliable.
I will be getting one to put into my SENSATION, once it is released in the UK (just in time for my June upgrade yipee).
may still keep my HD2 and load up lots of ROMs……or……£130 to sell it on line to the recycling dudes.

Yes, I've used them quite a few times in the past. Whenever there's been a problem (2 cards were not delivered even though they were apparently dispatched) they have sorted it out quickly and efficiently with just a single email.
I'd certainly recommend them.
SanDisk 32GB Class 2
Kingston 32GB Class 4
Patriot 32GB Class 10
^ tested all 3 of this and stayed with the last one. For the price and size/speed thats the best. As I don't trust ADATA nor WINTEC along with Lexer. So if anyone interested seriously look in to it.

As I have owned and tested SanDisk 32GB Class 2 and Kingston 32GB Class 4 and now Patriot LX 32GB Class 10. I can safely say this is by far the fastest card I used and not only does it meets the minimum class requirement but it exceeds it with flying colors. I have placed benchmark at the bottom so others who is thinking about buying this card can view it to make better decisions. For the price I give this card 7/10 and for speed 10/10, but thats far as I would go to defend this card.

Well put it this way. I used a class 4 8gb microsd in my new 16MP camera. It took several seconds to write 1 photo. Granted cpu will be alot slower but still surprisingly slow. Id save for class 10 in long run. I got my Patriot 32gb from memoryc.com good price for a real card.

The EVO 3D is basically the same phone as the Sensation with the addition of 3 extra Gb of RAM. The spec sheet for the Sensation on HTCs site lists 4Gb of RAM with a note that only 1Gb is user accessible.

I remember when T-Mobile's version of the HD2 came out and it had 768 Mb of RAM vs the 512 in the European HD2s and there was a way to unlock the remainder of the RAM with a hack for the Euro models.
I'm sure given HTCs track record that they've used the same hardware (makes sense) to cut down on costs so it's just a matter of a hack from the community to unlock the remaining 3Gb of RAM.
What say ye?

I guess you mean ROM and not RAM...and I've read that it is not possible...
Sure just buy a couple of DDR3 sticks and jam 'em in the microSD slot.

No, said RAM, meant RAM....
You can do the research, I was going by memory but it actually had 1Gb of RAM vs the 448 in standard HD2s. The Euro HD2s had an unlock that at least gave them 576 Mb, I'm guessing the same will be true here.

As you said in your first post, the Sensation is listed with 768 MB RAM, 4 GB Internal Storage (1 GB user addressable). Some of the 768 is then used for Android and Sense, with the remainder being open to run other applications. The 4 GB with 1 GB user addressable is NOT RAM. RAM is volatile (non-permanent) memory that is VERY fast and used to store the data for a currently running process. The user addressable space is non-volatile and is used for permanent storage of applications, contacts, photos, etc. It is not possible to use this as RAM as it is flash memory instead of using capacitors like the RAM found in cell phones (which provides the speed needed).
Some of the remaining 3 GB might be open in the future after the bootloader is unlocked and custom ROMs are flashed as they would be less memory intrusive than Sense. This might also free up some extra RAM from system use, but there is no possible way to increase it beyond 768 - whatever vanilla android requires to run.

SD of 8 GB have 8.000.000.000 bits.
Share it with 1024 and then divide the result with 1024 and 3 times so and you will get the real situation in GB SD card.
SD Card of 8 GB in reality there are about 7.45 GB.
This 6.75 GB is may be free space.

Yeah. The most SDs will have got some partition tables and other informations whose use a littlebit of space.
You will see too: On iPhone you buy a 16GB. Then it haves got ~14,xx GB free space(without iOS). With iOS there are only 11-12 GB free space left.
This is bcause the manufactures are saving some money.
More Space = More Production costs...
