internal memory? - HTC Inspire 4G

I rooted my inspire 4G phone, and installed CoreDroid_Desire_HD_GB_2.3.3_V5.4.
Today I noticed
in Quadrant => System Information, it shows:
Memory
Total: 636132kB <== only 600MB internal memory !?
Free: 54728KB
Inactive 182592kB
In Setting=>SD and Phone Storage,
I see SD card of Total Space: 7.39GB
but, Internal storage available space is only 640MB
In Android Booster, it shows:
Memory available: 156/621MB
Since AT&T website says that this phone is supposed to have 4GB internal memory and 8GB miscroSD card. According to what it shows above, is it really the case? What happened to the 4GB internal memory? I don't know how it was before I rooted the phone. Can anyone help? Thanks!

people still ask that question by the way before root it came with one gig try formating

You're mistaking ram for internal storage with these figures.

using root explorer:
cache: 290 mb
data: 1156,93 mb
system: 549,2 mb
Thats more than 1gb in use, but way less than 4gb.
where is the rest ? who knows
ps: ram MIGHT be reported as less than 768 because the GPU takes some for itself

Gpu takes ram, radio some, plus a few others.
Quick answer since this has been gone over many times in this forum alone. The phone has 4 gigs of internal storage, its formatted single layer, which is faster and more stable, but cuts the size in half. Now were down to 2 gigs of storage, and the OS and some other partitions reside here so take away a little less than a gig, and your down to a little over 1 gig of usable storage, which is exactly what we have.

And, depending on which rom you're using, ram compression.

The internal memory - how much is actually available?

I know that they are supposed to come with 4 gigs of memory. My phone its is telling me have have under a gig. Now, I haven't had out long and I only have a few apps. Could myes rooted rom take up all the available space? Or is there's another source? Thanks!

I think you're confusing internal vs SD card storage. My understanding is it's 1GB internal, and they ship with 8GB SD card (originally they were going to ship with 4GB SD so that's why there are some sites with bad specs out there).
I have a ton of apps installed and I still have half my total internal available.
I was told that the phone had four gbs internal in addition to the eight gig card.

I believe you were misinformed. And I stand corrected, it's got 768mb internal, and 8GB flash storage.
Actually it does have 4gb of internal memory, but you can only use slightly over 1gb. This was the same issue with the G2.

I'm not sure this is accurate. What's on the 4gb ROM? Makes no sense to have 4GB of read-only memory on any device.
If the OS\support is generally under 300mb, and is housed within the 768mb, what takes up the 4GB ROM? That wouldn't make any sense. I know there was some bad info that went out when the phone first released.... I think this may have stemmed from that.
I know ot doesnt make sense bit thats what it is. Liok at all stat sheets for.the phone. There is a pile of memory that is rwad only holding a backup of some kind.

The OS itself is stored in the 4 gig internal SD, and uses RAM out of the 768mb. Even though it has 4 gb of internal storage, the way its formatted only let's us use 2 gigs. its formatted for speed and stability rather than size, therefore we lose half of it, then the OS takes up almost a gig, so now were down to 1 gig of usable storage on the internal card, then we have the 8 gb external.
And I believe the 768 of RAM is for running processes, for multi-tasking.

Sounds like the same engineers who designed the AT&T network had their hands involved in this phone's design process.
Let's put a 20 gallon gas tank on a car, but weld a divider down the middle so someone can only put 10 gallons of gas in it. LOL
There was the same issue withe the G2 when it came out. It confused the heck out of a lot of them.

I'm still noy buyin it that there's a mystery 4GB in the phone.
Looking at the root system it's about 500mb, of which 300mb is free (for tasking), and then I have about 250mb of apps installed, which adds up too close to 768 for coincidence in my mind.
If there were a 4gb ROM floating around in there, it'd be absolutely useless. Obviously the OS isn't installed on it, since It's ROM (read ONLY), and apps don't use it as storage (read ONLY), and it's not used for multitasking space (read ONLY), so there's no logical explanation for it.
MY theory is originally the phone was going to ship with 4GB memory card, and they changed it to 8GB at the last minute.... and that was an artifact that got jumbled with the old specs.... because GSM Arena and AT&T both show 768RAM plus 8GB SD Card only.

gsmarena also states 4GB INTERNAL STORAGE, not ROM specifically.
From their site...
Internal 4 GB storage, 768 MB RAM
Card slot microSD, up to 32GB, 8GB included, buy memory
There is a thread in this forum with this issue questioned, and some guy emailed HTC. The answer we are telling you is the same they tell every one. This is not AT&T HTC phones do this, look at the G2 the Thunderbolt. It isn't a lie they are telling every one. That is what they use the memory for, some sort of back up(I don't know exactly what it is backing up). HTC does this with all the newer phones.....
Here is a good answer for this guys, we lose half the available space for speed and stability.

[Q] Possible to unlock the extra 3Gb of storage RAM?

The EVO 3D is basically the same phone as the Sensation with the addition of 3 extra Gb of RAM. The spec sheet for the Sensation on HTCs site lists 4Gb of RAM with a note that only 1Gb is user accessible.

768 MB RAM, 4 GB Internal Storage (1 GB user addressable)

I remember when T-Mobile's version of the HD2 came out and it had 768 Mb of RAM vs the 512 in the European HD2s and there was a way to unlock the remainder of the RAM with a hack for the Euro models.
I'm sure given HTCs track record that they've used the same hardware (makes sense) to cut down on costs so it's just a matter of a hack from the community to unlock the remaining 3Gb of RAM.
What say ye?

I guess you mean ROM and not RAM...and I've read that it is not possible...
Sure just buy a couple of DDR3 sticks and jam 'em in the microSD slot.

No, said RAM, meant RAM....
You can do the research, I was going by memory but it actually had 1Gb of RAM vs the 448 in standard HD2s. The Euro HD2s had an unlock that at least gave them 576 Mb, I'm guessing the same will be true here.

As you said in your first post, the Sensation is listed with 768 MB RAM, 4 GB Internal Storage (1 GB user addressable). Some of the 768 is then used for Android and Sense, with the remainder being open to run other applications. The 4 GB with 1 GB user addressable is NOT RAM. RAM is volatile (non-permanent) memory that is VERY fast and used to store the data for a currently running process. The user addressable space is non-volatile and is used for permanent storage of applications, contacts, photos, etc. It is not possible to use this as RAM as it is flash memory instead of using capacitors like the RAM found in cell phones (which provides the speed needed).
Some of the remaining 3 GB might be open in the future after the bootloader is unlocked and custom ROMs are flashed as they would be less memory intrusive than Sense. This might also free up some extra RAM from system use, but there is no possible way to increase it beyond 768 - whatever vanilla android requires to run.

How to find spec. on the phone itself

Hello guys. I was wondering where I can find the actual specs of my Sensation. I know that it suppose to have like 768MB of ram for the OS and a built- in 4 gb of storage and an sdhc expansion for 32gb. But where on the phone is it? I have been looking around and can't find it. I have TMobile and on the "My Device" tab/icon I go to "storage/battery and it says:system memory 1.15 GB and Storage is 7.39 (which is my sdhc card). I also went to "Task Manager" and it says that I have only 558 MB of total memory? So where can I find the actual specs?
Settings>about phone>hardware information and so on...
Around 200 MB of RAM is reserved for the GPU and only 1 GB of the 4 GB internal storage is available to the user.

Clarification regarding specs

Hello All,
I have started this thread as I couldn't find relevant info anywhere else. I purchased a Galaxy R 2 days back. As mentioned in the specifications on the box, the device has 1gb RAM and 8 gb internal storage along with 2gb ROM. However, when I check my device, it shows only 768 MB of RAM. Again internal storage shows to be only 3.75 GB and not 8 GB. Please comment.
If a similar thread exists, please merge, I couldn't find one.
Rituraj
yep I don't know how it should be (of cours beside RAM becouse its ok) but I have just like you in mine...
yep same like mine also..
8gb internal storage and u'll get 3.75gb..
if u wanna check again.. try it on SGSII 16gb.. only 12gb is usable for user..
so meaning almost 4gb of storage will be used up by android or samsung touchwiz? not sure though.. maybe some1 can explain better than me.
and the ram also the same. hope this help!
A lot of space is reserved/used by Android. You do not see it because an unrooted device does not have access to that area. Buy a cheap 32 gb sd card.
I think mrsaccess won't be mad if I link his post, where he explains that in a great, simple way.

The SAMSUNG Specs for HK is User Memory: 8GB (ROM: 512MB ; RAM: 1GB)
The user memory includes RAM and ROM as well.
Internal USB Storage 3.75GB+ Internal Device Storage 1.5 GB+ RAM 1 GB. max (256 MB for GPU)+ ROM 512MB Usable (Max 2GB)
Can it be like above case? I saw some reviews and posts around the web saying like this. I am not sure, and someone can give more deep insights.

I don't think so.
Galaxy R specifications:
- 1GB of RAM (256MB for the GPU, 768MB are free).
- 8GB of internal storage (2GB ROM, 2GB for applications and 4GB as mass storage).

GT-P3110 8gb shows me 4.5 gb ??

Hi guys got my device a week ago, flashed it with CM9 and its still showing me 4.5 gb instead of the 8gb
I paid for.
Is there a solution to fix this?

That's normal. Should say you get whatever is left from the 8GB when we are finished.
Where does that 4gb been used then? Rom itself is around 150mb

Even i am baffled with this. My P3100 is supposed to have 16GB but actually it is 11.89GB only. It is misrepresentation on Samsung part. They are cheating customers. User storage means pure user available storage.
I feel ripped of by this 8gb is nog much so 4.5 gigs is Just dissapointing...
Sent from my GT-P3110 using xda app-developers app
May be we all should collectively complaint to Samsung. Afterall we paid for it.
that 8 GB is used for your rom, cache, apps(pre-installed and user apps), app data, and whatever you put in your /mnt/sdcard folder.
and you already lose some space in the math. (no 8GB storage device is ever 8GB)

Then companies need to either tell Customers honestly that they will get only 4.5GB or put 12.5GB to give promised 8GB to customers. Why misrepresentation ? It amounts to cheating, technically.

It's the same when you purchase a laptop with Windows preloaded . The catalog says that you have 120GB harddisk storage and 4GB system memory. But when you open your laptop and check the system information, you only have 120x1000MB/1024MB = 117GB and 20GB reserved by Win7 & NTFS default allocation size. And 512MB system memory reserved by VGA.... This is exactly the current presentation for any device.
@cfygeorge
Thanks for valuable info but what this Xx1000/1024 calculation is?
But RAM is still just 678mb out of said 1gb

I total agree with your logic, but On the Spec page Samsung does state 8gb User Memory. It doesn't say system memory.
I really wish they wouldn't use the memory term, It's storage not memory.

Dead simple. Hardware manifacturers usually calculate 1 GB as 1000 MB. That's not correct as 1GB is 1024 MB.
About RAM: There is 1 GB on board. Some of it is reserved for OS operations and some is reserved for the GPU. So user RAM is 678 MB. We has this RAM discussions ever since the HD2
Oh...me ignorant child...
I never knew RAM too can be reserved.
Thanks for info
---------- Post added at 04:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:42 PM ----------
Now I even strongly believe manufacturers (Samsung in this case) should give net figures available to the user like 12gb of Storage and 678mb of user available RAM.
Current arrangement is not acceptable. Will write to Samsung for sure.

The thing is i flashed it from original to cm9 because i thougt custom roms are faster, use less storage,..it is faster but 4.5 GB is nothing most smartphones have more space then this tablet.
