How many of you have had dropped calls on the Captivate?
I haven't had any, and I got my Captivate on the 16th. (2 days before launch from BestBuy).
I am coming from an iPhone 3G/3GS/4 and had many dropped calls.
What I am implying is that AT&T's network isn't totally crap (as most people suggest). I believe it is due to the iPhone that people think at&t's network is crap.
So the question is:
1. Does the Captivate have an exceptionally great antennea?
2. Has at&t network suddenly gotten better(since July 16th)?
3. The iphone 3G/3GS/4 have a horrible antennae?
4. Any combination of the above 3?
I've been with AT&T since before Cingular bought the old AT&T.
AT&T does not have a bad network. They suffer from terrible PR, relatively poor customer support (due to their new training with the new AT&T as I didn't have problems with Cingular), and allowing Apple to produce its phone the way they did.
The iPhone has had a poor antenna design since the beginning.
The people who have problems with AT&T, I can guarantee 70%+ have iPhones.
Thanks for confirming what I just learned. I have had iphones for a long time, and just dealt with the dropped calls thinking it was at&t sh**y network. I really like Apple products, but they don't know how to make a phone.
All my friends still think its at&t even though I tell them I haven't had a dropped call yet on this Samsung.
Yeah.. I try and tell my mother that all of the time.
She just got rid of her iPhone 2g.
Her eyes have just been opened hahaha
I have been with ATT/Cingular since .. oh.. 1998?
I've had many phones, some that would drop calls, usually from being out of ATT towers in massively rural areas, or driving past the towers too fast..
I got the eternity when it came out, killed 2 (6 months on the dot, both times) and they gave me an impression which I promptly notices it's screen starting to die at 6 months-ish. They dropped calls only when I was 1) out of decent service 2) driving too fast past a tower in close proximity as it tried to switch carriers.
This puppy? Not even a crackle.
I had a Fuze (Touch Pro) most recently (new ROM, Radio, etc) and it dropped calls quite frequently.
I think I may have had one dropped call so far but it was in my office which gets poor signal anyways. I had many more on my last phone but I'm not quite ready to say AT&T is so great. Maybe this phone has a better antenna.
Thanks for all the replies. I am trying to convert a few of my friends, but the general stigma is "Android Sux" They don't even know about the OS, all they know is their sister/cousin/friend has some crappy Backflip, so All android is crappy.
Oh well I will be plenty happy with my calls staying connected, while they complain about their dropped calls because of AT&T's network.
For me to leave the iPhone was exceptionally hard, because I have 3 Macs, and AppleTV, iPod Touch, and Airport Extreme. I have spent Thousands of dollars on apps from the app store along with Movies. I just had enough with the dropped calls.

I haven't had a single dropped call. Voice quality seems higher than on iphones. (Can't vouch for other androids)
I have had the captivate since day one, no drop calls, i would have had at least 2-3 by now with my old iphone 3g. I have been with AT&T/cingular in both New Orleans 8 years and San Diego 10 years the iphone was the worst followed by the 82** (Htc tilt). The captivate is one of the better phones.
I also haven't had any dropped call issues like I did with my old iPhones in the same places. My N1 has also been fantastic without dropping, so I'm more apt to blame poor design of the iphones
I've been with Cingular/AT&T for 18 years & moved to the Captivate from a Razr. My Razr was very good, but the Captivate is better. I'm happy to have switched to a smart phone & glad I waited for the Captivate.
Sorry, but I have to laugh at all you iPhone (iCrap) users complaining about dropped calls. Obviously, I'm not a fan of the iPhone - but, that's another story.
I have been with ATT/Cingular/ATT since 1993. My first, second, third, and fourth devices were all Nokias (3 & 4 were WM device which I customized by using XDA resources), 5th was a BB Curve (for only a few months as I didn't like it either and gave it to my wife when the G1 came out). I bought the G1 within weeks of it's release from Craigslist.
Except for device #2 I have NEVER had an issue with dropped calls - AND, I work patrol for a Sheriff's Office - so, I'm mostly in RURAL areas. I would receive/make/retain calls in areas that my co-workers had no signal at all. Many of them had iPhones and complained about dropping calls... I used to think they were somehow on T-Mobile's network (which used to be horrible in my area).
My wife never had dropped calls with her BB Curve.
My G1 and now the Captivate NEVER drop calls. As much fun was made of the G1 - it worked like a charm within the limitations of it's hardware (ram/rom/camera).
The device plays a HUGE role in the number of dropped calls. My second Nokia device was only kept for a short while b/c of that issue. The third and later devices had NO ISSUES at all with dropped calls. If there was ANY signal there was no problem.
I have had over 20 dropped calls in the two weeks I have had the phone. I don't know what the issue is. I have avoided all death grips that I have read about. I think I'll take it into the ATT store tomorrow to see what's going on since I seem to be the only one. Any other suggestions?
I haven't dropped a call yet, but I never dropped one with my iPhone either. I actually had dropped calls with my nokia phones though, which is surprising because generally I have good service with them.
I haven't had a dropped call yet, and I'm not anticipating many. I, like many others in this thread, have been with AT&T for the last 14+ years, and despite heavy phone usage, in all that time, I've probably had 30 dropped calls total, if that. I went through several incarnations of Nokias, then onto Motorolas, a Sony-Ericsson, back to Nokia, a Samsung Omnia, and now the Captivate.
There was a brief, month-long period where I had concurrent TMobile and AT&T accounts, during which I tested out the HTC HD2 (after waiting months for its release), and when I compared the signal of the TMo phone and the AT&T phone, it was no contest - AT&T won everywhere I took it. When I was on the California coast, TMobile had no signal, while AT&T had a full 5 bars. That was the clincher. I returned my beloved HD2 and dropped TMobile like a hot potato.
Maybe I've just gotten really lucky, but AT&T's network has been great for me. Yes, their customer service is ridiculously poor, but in terms of functionality, their network is as good as I could hope for. I, too, suspect that the people who complain about their calls being dropped are just on crappy devices. Either that, or I've just been uncommonly lucky the last decade and a half.

I have the same problem only when the call goes over 2mins, it some how likes to auto update time and date, call get drop, time is updated.... looks like it was a radio error with switching bands between voice and data
uncheck the auto time and date updates and see if it fixes the problem
why do ATT have to molest every damn good phone
The only device I ever dropped calls on was my iPhine 3g, and I've been on AT&T since it was Cingular. Haven't dropped a single call since getting rid of it.

Never had a dropped call.
Call quality may be decreased, but no dropped call here.
I have also been an AT&T/Cingular customer for over a decade. The service where I live has never been good, I'll say that. I got an iPhone 4 and could barely talk on it here without it dropping. My old 2.5G iPhone worked pretty well, with maybe a dropped call ever other day. My captivate is right in the middle. Better than the iPhone 4, but at least one dropped call a day.
I have had much better success with this phone than others with dropped calls but still do occasionally get them. Anyone know of a way to enable a notification sound that the call has ended?
Was on a call last week and kept talking for probably 30 seconds after it had dropped off.
They all are saying AT&T is evil, I'm crazy blah blah vampire emergency blah...
OMG WHAT HAVE I DONE????
Seriously. All Cellular carriers in the US are evil. Just in different ways. Why all the AT&T hate? Where's the gotchas?

Ditto. Plenty of people have legitimate reasons to complain about AT&T (dropped calls, lack of coverage, etc) but plenty of people have never had a single issue with them. Personally I just switched to AT&T for the Captivate (formerly with T-Mobile) and I've been happy so far. I get at least the same if not better coverage and my bill is actually cheaper thanks to a 21% discount from my employer.
it's fashionable to hate at&t. If you listened to these people, at&t would have worse coverage than tmobile. Anyone who's ever owned both outside of a major metro area knows that's a joke.
AT&T issues are market-based and are not universal. If any of your "friends" are iPhone 4 users, their problems are universal.
i dont have any real complaints with service anymore (one perk of the iphone)
but i dont think ive had one single interaction with att that they didnt mess up (ex. adding a line and putting a messaging block on the whole account. wtf?)
I was one of those that had trouble with at&t. I had each iPhone generation, and all 3g versions would drop calls. Now I will say I worked for apple retail at the genius bar for this time period, and it was all to frequent in terms of customers complaining. I bought the hype that it was at&T's sucky network causing all the issues.
Then the iPhone 4 hit. I had one. Returned it due to lack of satisfaction with he fix for the search grip as well as the proximity sensor issue. I immediately went and got the captivate.
I haven't dropped a single call since. Not one. Even in areas that were guaranteed to drop on 3 successive generations of iPhone. I have yet to have any issue.
That tells me something.
That I will not go back. No matter what.

Same, my wife and I were disgusted with our iPhone 3Gs, both dropped calls and limited customization, and poor performance with the iOS 4 update. It was so bad we thought it was AT&T's network and were contemplating on switching carriers. I decided to try out the Captivate, and it's been awesome.
And your buddies are jealous, that's all

My experience is similar. I have had at&t for years.i never had a problem with them until I had an iphone. The three I had dropped calls constantly. Now I have the captivate and at&t is great again.
thanks all. You'll never get a die hard apple fanboi to admit the iphone problems are problems with the phone. Thanks for the positive stories
Yeah, when I had my first gen iPhone, I occasionally dropped calls and just generally had bad quality. I figured it was AT&T's infamous network. I almost switched carriers, but I was prepaid at that time and had built up nearly a 500 dollar balance on my account, so I didn't want to lose that. So, I gave the Blackberry Bold (9000) a try - turns out it was the iPhone all along. I got great reception and fantastic call quality on my Bold.
I haven't made many calls with my Captivate - frankly, the voice/phone portion of my cellphone is fairly low on my priorities - but while it doesn't really seem to quite be up to the level of my Bold, it's still far ahead of my iPhone.
Same story here.
Had a WinMo phone for years (HTC Hermes) then switched to iPhone, started dropping calls, and losing data. It wasn't too big, and at about the same time I moved into a basement apt. I chalked it up to all the concrete that I could not talk on the phone when home. We moved again, and on my commute to and from work there were 3 spots that would lose signal EVERY time. Calls would drop, Pandora would stop playing, etc. Then I got my HTC Aria, same commute, far fewer dropped calls, then my Captivate (day 30 of my Aria return window) and haven't dropped a call since on the commute. AT&T having network issues? I think not.
I am giddy at the chance of a Verizon iPhone, so all the people complaining about AT&T will see that the iPhone on any network sucks.
I've had at&t for years, because until recently it was all we had I'm my area that was any count at all. Recently Verizon has moved in, and I did consider switching because of hardware choices. But I waited it out, and decided to go ahead with my Captivate, and I'm loving it. My friends all have iPhones and so did I. I never had the problems that they seem to have, but I'm happier now anyway being away from the tyranny of Steve Jobs.

i had to switch to at&t because of work. i do a lot of international travel and at&t's list of countries is about 5x bigger than any other carrier for reduced roaming rates. and GSM is more universal and i didn't want verizon's blackberry offerings.
i had minor issues with call drops, but that's because i'm usually in large metal/concrete airplane hangers.
so far though, no issues with captive. even with one bar, no call quality issues either in the states...or as of so far hong kong.
oh and my entire office but 2 others have iphones and i got nothing but flack for not getting one. glad i didn't
I have been with ATT since 1998 and the only issues I have ever had with dropped calls was with the following phones since the Cingular/ATT Merger: Nokia N-Gage QD, Motorola V551 *just close to my house*, Motorola V3 *close to my house and when the phone was at the end of its life*, Samsung Sync *bought it used of fleabay worst cell ever*, Nokia N55 *would drop in typical black hole areas*, Motorola Razr2 *POS never could get a good voice call on it no matter what area I was in*, Blackberry Curve 8300 *dropped calls in blackhole areas*, BB 8310 *same as 8300*, BB Bold 9000 Same as the previous BBs, and now the Captivate *same as the BB in terms of dropped calls which equals about 2 dropped calls in the past 5 weeks or so*...
Now funny thing when I talk to a couple of my friends who actually have the iPhone, they drop randomly and it is pretty funny where I dont have the issue with my Captivate. Even my friend who is also a snake breeder *boas, pythons and other snakes*, told me today he likes his iPhone 3G besides the dropping call issue and asked me how Android is treating me, I said I love it and not going back to BB...

LOL notasimpleway. Got tired of having an out of date phone and super slow EVDO.
I just got the Inspire 4G the other day at an HTC conference. (Work related)
For years I've used an iPhone for my primary device. I'm no stranger to Android. I've had a Nexus One and a Samsung Captivate. The inspire in the best android phone I have used yet.
The Captivate is an aweful phone. A GPS that works when it wants to, FoYo that never arrived....etc... I installed a custom ROM (Cognition) and it brought new life to the phone and was a better experience, but I am of the opinion that I shouldn't have to use custom ROMs to make the phone work the way it is supposed to or to have the latest software when it should have already been available. Who knows when FoYo does come out for the captivate if it will be any good or will it still be better to use a custom ROM. On the Inspire I feel as if I don't need to run a custom ROM because it is great the way it is.....so far.
Two issues I did notice with the Inspire that I have verified that others I know with the phone are having as well.
1) The call quality is horrible! It's very treblely and just sounds terrible.
2) The external speaker is definately not loud enough. That seems to be a trait of HTC phones and cheap, low quality speakers.
For example on point #2. I have my own customer ringtones and sound effects for text and emails, which are the same ones I used on my iPhone. I wear my phone in a leather pouch on my belt. I can hardly hear when I get a text or the phone is ringing. Thankfully I have it set to vibrate at the same time, and if I didn't feel it vibrate I would never know I am getting a text or a call. That is very annoying. Especially when it is worn on my belt, I should be able to hear it. I don't know if this can be fixed via a software upgrade or if it is just cheap parts.
On my iPhone, if my phone is downstairs and I am upstairs, I can clearly hear loudly when I get a text or call. The iPhone has a much better speaker.
The Inspire is a very fast phone as far as the OS goes. The internet is also faster, it seems like the phone is connecting to AT&T's imitation 4G service. The battery life isn't that great though.
I am disappointed that AT&T decided to remove the front facing camera. Also it seems like the phone isn't as thick as the EVO, although it does have some good weight to it. It definately does NOT feel cheap.
The Hot Spot feature works pretty good, although I just briefly played with it.
Well that's my brief opinion for the moment. The phone is really nice, but the external speaker volume issue might force me to go back to my iPhone for primary use and knock my Inspire back to secondary play phone.
Awesome, I can't wait.
hmmm i have read a few reviews that said call quality is awesome, Mobiletech review and infosync come to mind, maybe its just some handsets

I dunno, maybe they have hearing issues. But many people I've talked to that went to the same conference that I did that also got phones made the same comments I did. Bad call quality and dretful speaker volume.
Also on a a differnet note, I used to date a girl from Manapalan years ago. I would have done anything for her back in the day. Something about Jersey girls.

This model (Desire HD) never had a front camera... wasn't AT&T's doing.
I just cant decide if I wanna give up my i4 for this. I wanna buy outright but sometimes I just cant justify that price when I think of other things I could buy for that amount of money. The front facing camera doesnt bother me because I have had an i4 since launch and used it maybe 4 times. I just worry about size and the speaker volume. I know that overtime with roms that can be fixed so not so worried about that. My options now are to sell wait for someone to sell and the get a new itouch for the ios fix. Sorry but imo itunes just works for me, the only phone I've used as an audio device would be my iphone. I just really like android and flashing and always having the latest on it and have been back and forth since the g1. I just sometimes dont like all the time it takes away from life having to read up all the time or keep up with the latest. Anyways enough rambling just my thoughts.

No worries on the low volume problem, TEST THIS ON YOUR DEVICES AND COMMENT PLEASE
An easy fix for the low external speaker volume is this app, created by the infamous Meltus from xda.
Its a must if indeed the speaker is low:

Yes I definately think it's a better device. Sure the Captivate is a good device when using a custom rom, but I'm of the opinion that you shouldn't need to run a custom rom to make the device work the way it is ment to. Plus when you run a customer rom is just has the feel of being pieced together from various parts and not really a complete experience.
HTC sense does make a world of difference. It is more than just an overlay like Touchwiz or Launcher Pro...etc... I used to be a diehard pure stock android experience, but Sense won me over. It adds so much to the device.
But the two issues I originally mentioned are a problem though. The tinny call quality and the low external speaker volume are things to take into consideration. It's terrible when you can't even hear the phone ring when it's on your hip. So far I've missed calls and SMS if my phone is in one room of my house and I am in another, whereas I could hear my iPhone even if I am upstairs and my phone is downstairs.
Today I emailed our area HTC rep and told her the problems that I and others are having and she is passing the info up the ladder. I said to her that I find it odd that HTC's quality control didn't notice the crappy speaker on the device and that I couldn't recommend the phone to my customers at this time until I hear of a resolution to the problems.
So although I love the Inspire and think it's a very good phone, I would hold off buying it until there is a bug fix or something to the speaker problems. I might have to go back to my iPhone 4 for the time being until HTC fixes the phone.
Before anyone makes a decisions on buying it, you might want to wait until the Motorola Atrix comes and compare the two.
After spending a day with the Inspire I promptly ditched my iP4. I also have a Captivate running Cognition and it just gets destroyed by the Inspire. I haven't been able to test battery life, but I know what I'm in for in that department.
The Inspire is quite simply very fast. Ran Quadrant to compare to other phones I've had this year as well. My Captivate running Cognition gets about 1500, while the Inspire was around 1900 each time. I've never used a phone that blew through that benchmark so fast. Neocore got around 57fps so that's very solid as well. GPS connected quickly, but I only tested it outdoors as that's where I would generally use it. Speaker is a bit weak, but sound is pretty fantastic through headphones. YouTube video played smooth and looked amazing. It's a much better YouTube experience than the iP4 imo.

Seriously? No carrier is using true 4g. HSPA+ is considered 4g now; Just look at T-Mobile.
Can anyone compare the speakers to a nexus one? Same question for battery life, granted it may be a little early for that.

I used to have a Nexus One last year, and always thought the external speaker was horrible on that also, but it was a bit louder than the Inspire.
Although I didn't think the call quality of the N1 was bad. The call quality is horrible on the Inspire, whether through the earpiece or the speaker phone.

Based on your experiences so far, how would you rank the Inspire 4G to the Motorola Atrix? I'm waiting to make up my mind on my next upgrade. The battery life and front facing camera are really hard for me to get past, but I'm not a major fan of Motoblur either (although I know the Tegra 2 processors should handle that ok).
Great write-ups guys, that's good information to hear. Concerning the speeds compared to other phones, remember that you're using a new phone and comparing it to other phones that are bogged down by applications and data files.
Back a few weeks ago I thought my captivate was fast Oced at 1.2. I rooted to install a newer version of the ROM, master cleaned it, and it was even faster stock than it was OCed before.
Exactly my worry. We've put all the work into the Captivate only to buy an inferior phone out of the box...

FYI: I can confirm this too. Probably due to the crapple i****, but its worth noting they are also going to try and deny a swap to a different Android device as well.
A month ago I was told I would be able to swap out my device for any other I wanted; if the new device is more expensive I would pay more, if it was less I would get money back. Last week however I called Verizon just to check on things and they changed their story. I figure I am in for an argument when I try and do the swap out. The grounds for the swap are poor reception which has been confined as a "bug" by Samsung. They say they are working on a fix, but the G Nexus had **** reception which still has not been fixed eight months later, and the GS3 uses the cell same receiver, at least thats what I am told. A Verizon field rep came to the house and reported back service in this area was fine but this device (he had a test one) was a total POS when it came to reception. I have been with verizon for 10+ years and never had so many dropped calls and dead zones. My Data speeds are bi-polar, going from ~39 MBPS next to a VZW tower, down to a few KBPS when I go about 1000 ft away from the tower. Verizon tech support said they can see the increase of dropped calls and poor data speeds on my account, which is why they offered the swap. I am waiting for the Droid Inc X because nothing else out now has 2bg ram.
When you add poor reception to the long list of other issues, I can see why people are jumping off this sinking ship.
I used to keep my Droid X & X2 in a car dock mounted on the windshield and audio out through the earphone jack to the car speakers. No ext mic or BT headset was needed for people to hear me and no once did anyone ever complain they could hear themselves through the phone echoing. I can no longer do this now that I have the GS3.
The audio processor for the US versions is total ****. The international version has a different audio processing chip which is MUCH better and you can HEAR the difference not only with headphones, but with car speakers through headphone jack, and even the phones built in crap speaker. Volume levels suck, and while it is ok when just using headphones, if you use the device in a Car Dock plugged into your car speakers, you will find you have to turn up the volume on your car stereo much higher then other phones. Noise cancelation is horrid; people on the other end of my calls can hear themselves echo if I use the device in the car with audio through the speakers. The mic sensitivity is no where near good as Motorola phones. I can no longer use my phone for voice calls hands free when its mounted on the dash because the mic's do not pick up my voice more then 2 feet away from the device. When using video conferencing apps like Tango or GChat, I have to hold the phone close to my face or the other party can't hear what I am saying. While my other Android devices did not have forward facing cameras, I did test out these apps using just the rear camera and I did not have the same issue. Samsung phone hardware just blows. They are cheep, the whole device is cheep garbage quality with garbage internal components. They wanted an inexpensive phone and they got it by putting in garbage components to save money.
Its ironic that a company that makes such amazing TV's could totally screw up the screen on the GS3. The phones display PPI are awful compared to other premium devices and pentile is such garbage old technology. There alr also widespread manufacturing defects in the screen. I have checked out seven different GS3's, not just Verizon but on different carriers too. All of them have visible screen manufacturing defects where when the screen is set to medium or higher brightness, and you are looking at a black backdrop, you can see these black waterspots. Its the glue they used under the **** pentile display. Thats what happens when you rush out 10+ million devices using cheep labor. I love Samsung TV's but I will NEVER buy another Samsung smartphone.
Combine all of this with Verizon's encrypted bootloader, annoying Wi-Fi popup, S-Voice interface forced instead of Googles Voice Command interface, and Verizons spyware Backup Assistant / Mobile Hotspot emended into the system menu and you have a subpar POS device.
Yes, you can Root and Rom to fix the software issues, but the hardware ones will not be fixed by a 3rd party Rom or software update. Verizon knows this device is a POS and they know they have completely messed up the software side, in fact while they say the Wi-Fi popup is a "bug" we all know Verizon is a bunch of scumbag liars.
This is why people are returning the device; the abuse is by Verizon on its customers.
EDIT: I made it very clear with Verizon that I will NEVER use an Apple product due to the fact they are criminals who violate the US construction and civil rights. They said they are no longer swapping devices for any manufacture, not just Apple. This has nothing to do with the 15 day return policy, just the policy where Verizon will swap your phone if you have known issues they can't fix. It used to be the 3 strikes swap, where if you had to swap the same device three times you could pick a different one.

It seems missed the point, and more then likely the point of the OP. I can't say for sure as there is not enough info in the post, but because this is in the GS3 section, I am assuming he is talking about the same thing I am talking about... GETTING RID OF THE GS3 and swapping it for another device.
You are GETTING a GS3 from Verizon, I am (and assume the OP) talking about getting RID of GS3's and getting a different phone model. Verizon has been giving G Nexus people free swap outs to GS3's for several months now, mainly over G Nexus poor reception issues. Thats the joke of it too; the GS3 has the SAME issue, but people are getting a faster device so they are happy with the swap and keep quiet. I came over from a Droid X and a X2 via Ins replacement [of the DX]; both had BS encrypted bootloaders which made me hate the devices and Motoroal itself, but at least the "phone" part of the "smartphone" actually worked correctly.
If I wanted a smartphone that could not properly make and receive calls I would have bought an iPhone.
EDIT: Because this forum is filled with people from all over the world, I would like to point out once again the GS3 de international' is not even close to the GS3 from North America. I am not just talking about the piss poor benchmarks of the duel CUP vs quad CPU, which were oddly under talked about by most of the main stream android media, I am trying to point out that the two devices are completely different down to the Audio Processing chip they stuck on the circuit boards. They are not the same device.

I would be more than happy to trade you my RAZR MAXX for your GS3 if there was an easy way of doing it. I feel the same about my MAXX, ever since the ICS update my phone is crap. I'd love to have a GS3. I've messed with them and I like everything about them EXCEPT the battery, but I would give up battery life for that phone. LOL. Sorry for highjacking this thread, but i couldn't help it. I've heard a lot worse about Motorolas.

You make it sound like Verizon is giving people a GS3 from a gnex like its free candy and that is definitely not the case. I had 5 gnex replacements and had to deal with serveral bad reps and 2 supervisors before they budged on giving me one. There are also plenty of people going on their 6+ gnex replacement.

From day of OP, it the decision to stop alternate replacements had been made with in the "last 72 hours". It came from corporate. Due to people abusing the system and getting multiple alternate replacements. QUESTION: does this apply to me when VZW sent me a Nexus accidentally instead of the S3 I had origianally. I cc called and told them I received the Nexus and they apologized and agent me the S3

I continuously get the no SIM error. On replacement device 4 today and replacement SIM 11, yes 11. Really tired of this B.S. I might leave VZW. NOTE THIS: If you have opened a trouble ticket and it comes back saying you live in a known trouble area, you can cancel your contract with paying an early termination fee.

I have never had to re-read so many posts to understand the point.
Back to the topic, I am repeatedly offered alternative replacements to my S3, due to the NO SIM issue. I keep refusing them, hoping for a software update to fix the bug, or the Note 2 release...
Like the other person said, I think you gotta learn to talk nice to them.

Nothing to do with how you talk to them. It is called luck of the draw. Some reps can be pushed to give you what you want and others can't. End of story.

Of course it does, the techs are human & it absolutely DOES matter how you talk to them.
I am the head of our cell dept at work (187 phones). When I call VZ I get phenomenal service (& have for over 10 years). I have never had a single problem with them.
I have a coworker that absolutely HATES VZ but it's because he is a loudmouth hothead & manages to piss off just about everybody he talks to rather quickly. LOL, he never gets any help from anybody..........

You can be the nicest person in the world to a rep, it does not mean they will swap your GNEX for an S3.
I have seen many times a nasty frustrated person get what he wants and the nice guy gets Jack ****.
I am not saying that you should not be nice I am just saying it does not mean it will get you what you want.
Also, you being a head of cell phones for a company puts you in another class.
Update: Seems that the rep was lying, and her supervisor. I am guessing she told her supervisor what to say and he played along with her. I called in last night and spoke to another rep. She does some troubleshooting and sees it isn't working. She then offers me a replcement in a nexus. I told her I already had one but sold it to get the S3. She then proceeds to say and I quote " Well I am not supposed to make these statements but there are rumors of a Galaxy Note 2 coming out within the next month and you might like that. I can call you back then and see if you are interested in that as a replacement device." So looks like if things go well, I could have a note in my hands soon.

hmmmm I would like a note as well!! Only issue I have is super crappy 3g reception at my house (1 bar that drops constantly) and I can drive less than 5 minutes into town and have 4 full bars of 4g so I don't think its a service issue more so than a radio issue. Never had the issue with any of my moto devices.
I must be one of the lucky people. My phone has never had a problem... yeah I had bad reception until lately when they must have extended 4G out here... now I'm usually always 2-3 bars 4g! Also I did flash the new modem also. I don't know if that was the fix or just the 4g extension

So long story short I have had my Verizon Pixel 3 since launch but never activated it and switched over to it due to some personal issues over the last few months...I am almost ready to dive in and set it all up and make the switch what I want to know is there any known issues I should be looking out for whether it be software or hardware related?
If I were you, I wouldn't even take it out of the box. Sell this piece of junk and get something else. I am waiting for my third replacement and there won't be a fourth.

What were your problems?
Have had it for a couple months. Waiting on replacement. Charging port is loose.
In October I switched to the pixel 3 after 8 years of iPhones.
Very satisfied with the Google experience. It's an excellent phone.
My wife and I have been using the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL since just after release and after 2+years of the OG Pixel and Pixel XL. None of the 4 phones have had any hardware issues or software issues besides normal stuff that gets fixed or is application specific. Most of the software issues have been the cat and mouse game with rooting (these days via Magisk), custom recovery (TWRP) and installing from custom recovery, and other random root permission/root app issues. Since you have a Verizon variant, none of that is relevant except in the extremely unlikely event that a bootloader unlock is found. To be honest, the only issue either of us have had software related is that on her phone she has to to swipe the shade down again after clicking/acknowledging a notification to get the notification to go away. Funny thing is the OG Pixel had the same issue, and it is hardly a deal breaker despite the fact that Google has just thrown a ton of useless troubleshooting steps her way that would be far more problematic and time consuming than just dealing with it. It has been reported by others, but there still seems to be no consistency in the cause.
I've had the Pixel 1, 2, and now 3. I've had ONE issue with the 1st Pixel and haven't had another issue since. The GPS chip went out in the first pixel but the rest have been bullet proof.

First device had a paint chip on the frame near the top, awful battery life and static noise in the earpiece, and many software bugs that were mostly fixed with the December update. Second device had a paint chip near the usb port, problems with the oleophobic coating, and static noise in the earpiece, and the black frame had marks/scratches all around from being on a Spigen case which never happened with any other device I had in the past. Besides these issues, the software seems half-baked, with lots of small glitches. The video recording is terrible for a flagship phone (not talking about the audio), and if the phone starts getting too hot, the recording becomes choppy and the phones turns into a lag fest and it turns itself off to cooldown. All in all, I feel like the quality of the hardware is subpar and the software experience is too barebones to justify the price.
For me, the biggest unresolved issue has been the persistent lack of communication from Google. It seems particularly bad since the release of the Pixel 3. That has not been corrected, and probably never will.
I can understand and forgive defects. They are bound to happen. That being said, the Pixel 3 has had an abnormally large number of issues compared to most other devices (even compared to previous Google devices) indicating a low level of quality control on this particular product. Going by what I'm seeing on the forums, the biggest outstanding technical issue right now appears to be with call quality. I've personally experienced this issue myself on 6 different Pixel 3 and 3XL phones (RMA exchanges). I also work with a number of people who received/purchased the Pixel 3 or 3XL over the holidays, and have found that their call quality is so poor that they can't even use the phone. I started a thread about it here on XDA. It is the topic of one of the top threads on Google's own product forums. Thousands of people commenting, and new people adding their voice every day. Some major news outlets have picked it up. There are also daily posts about it on the /r/GooglePixel sub-reddit, but they are quickly removed by moderators or downvoted into oblivion. To this date, no one can say for certain what causes it because Google won't officially acknowledge that they even are aware of it, let alone trying to fix it.
There also appear to be outstanding issues with memory management, screen colors, Bluetooth connectivity, and the haptic engine (seems to have a high failure rate). Some folks are claiming they are still having issues with the camera not saving, despite the recent patch. Browsing the forums, there is still a laundry list of other unresolved issues with the P3. Some might be fixable, and some are inherent to poor QA in the batch, and will probably never be resolved.
But none of that matters, because Google won't communicate. There is literally no indication even Google is even aware of these issues. There is no way of knowing what will be in the next patch, and no expectations relayed to the customers.
Even if the Pixel 3 is eventually patched to perfection (doubtful), and all Googles future releases are problem free, the blatant lack of communication and poor customer service will prevent me from purchasing a Google product again. The level of customer service is on-par with some of those shady Chinese e-bay stores that sell low quality electronics. I honestly can't believe a billion dollar company is treating their customers this way.
Edit: Here is a link to the product forums. You will probably get the best idea for the problems people are having there, since it is the first place a non-technically inclined user is likely to go.
My wife and I both have Pixel 3's that we've been using since late October. Neither of us have had a single issue. I think it's a great phone.
Well I'm having this issue since the very first day I bought my pixel 3:
I get some random vibrations without notification whatsoever. Its always the same pattern : 2 short vibrations.
Installed every possible notification log application, used the settings widget etc. There is NO notification logged when this happens. None.
It is just random, and no it doesn't only happen in shhh mode or in the pocket, it also happens when the phone is idle face up on a table.
Very frustrating.

Now that you mention it, I was also having this issue with my phone. I thought I was just going crazy though
