[POLL] Tethering & AT&T Visual Voice Mail - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Alright guys,
As most of you may already know, AT&T has been sending letters out claiming that users are tethering. I want to start a poll and see out of all you that received this letter or text. How many of you have AT&T Visual Voice Mail installed on your phone. Doesn't matter if you use it or not.
Reason being is that if you guys haven't seen the permissions for VVM this is what two of them are:
Network Communication:
View Network Connections
Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected
System Tools
Retrieve Running Apps
Allows the app to retrieve information about currently and recently running tasks. This may allow the app to discover information about which applications are used on the device
Reason for this poll is to see if VVM is what is notifying AT&T of the "Tethering" Activities.
To clarify on the poll answers:
If you have VVM frozen then consider it as not having it installed.

i use vvm. i used foxfi and got the letter. sad.

With AT&T VVM installed, I was using the built-in AOKP tethering and I got the letter.

I have VVM and have used the Clockworkmod Tether app, which does USB tethering, never gotten a letter.

Alright, you guys are going to love this. So I just called AT&T about the letter. I figured I'd stick with the "play dumb" approach. I said I didn't know what it was about and I couldn't figure out how to tether anyway. Blah blah blah.. he said that when tethering use is reported over the network, the technicians verify it through "multiple redundant verification". I told him that after we got the letter, I tried to see if I could tether and that my phone wouldn't let me. He then stated "well, there are lots of apps that can let you tether," and he proceeded to rattle off a prepared list of apps including FoxFi and a dozen or so others.
This is where it got interesting. He proceeded to tell me that according to their technicians, "You're not even using the stock firmware". I replied, "the what whatter?" (sticking with my "play dumb" approach) and he responded, "You know, the stock operating system that came with your phone or that AT&T updated over the air."
If you use their apps, they can see everything. And it can't be long before they figure out a way to see everything without secretly spying on you with an app.

This kind of meshes with a conversation I had the other day with my AT&T contact. He said that there's been a lot of effort lately put into finding rooted devices on the network and getting them off.
I think at this point we can safely say that any AT&T-provided stock app is to be considered spyware, and should be removed from the phone entirely (not frozen, deleted with phone caches wiped) the second you root.
That said, there's nothing stopping them from putting silent tracker apps elsewhere in the phone and hiding them completely. Here's the fun part: the contracts don't say anything about rooting the phone, do they? If they start kicking root users off the network or forcing us to change off of unlimited data because we've rooted our phone, they'd be begging for a class-action lawsuit.

Especially when the US Supreme Court ruled that it was completely legal for us to root our phones. They just don't have to provide technical support for rooted phones.

Delete it entirely using Tibu. VVM is not a critical system process, and I don't trust that app at all.

I've been going through a lot of AT&T apps and most of them have the spyware on them.
As for being able to know if you are running stock firmware or not, I'm shocked to hear that.
As a community I think it's safe to say that no AT&T app can be trusted. They are using something to be able to gather information, we just have to figure out what it is.

Infuse WIFI Tether/Hotspot

This is how I got my Infuse to do wifi tether/hotspot
1- Root Phone
I used one click root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
2- Install Wifi Tether from Code.Google
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
3- Use Program to FREEZE App Called (Tether Manager) in app list
I used AntTek App Manager... I know theres a lot of other programs that can freeze/uninstall once rooted
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.anttek.am&hl=en
Hope this helped.. I know it took me awhile to figure it out, not many people make it clear and easy on how to get this to work correctly...

This tutorial is only for stock ROMs.
If you're on any custom ROM, there is no procedure - nothing needs to be frozen or installed. Just go to Settings and enable it. Well you should probably set it for WPA security and configure a password...

I've never seen additional charges when I've tethered. I use it about 2-3 times a week to connect my wi-fi Galaxy Tab to the interwebs when we're out and about. There have been threads on this forum about people getting notifications from AT&T but they may be fringe cases. I think AT&T was issuing a cease and desist or there were going to bump the people to the "tethered" plan.

If the network operator cares, they can use specialized network equipment to analyze the data to see if it is cominf from one device(just the phone) or more than one device (phone +computer tethered) as each device numbers its tcp sequence numbers independently, while from a single device they would be consistent. So, don't complain if you get caught.

I RARELY tether, maybe 5 times briefly since I've owned the phone, but I just got the letter from AT&T stating I will be auto enrolled in the 4gb plan if I don't call.
So I called, they told me anyone who tethers after October 31st will be auto enrolled in the 4gb Tether plan and will lose Unlimited data.
Also new info to me, was that using your phone to play Google Music/Pandora VIA BT to your car or stereo is considered tethering, wow.

there is now an app on the market that targets those of us looking for a CIQ/app freezer...
search the market for 'app freezer' and Bloat Freezer free should show up. It specifically mentions CIQ.
I was able to freeze the app while running on my phone, though it prompted a perpetual FC error. I had to force a reboot but after that verified that it was indeed frozen.

This app messed up my phone

Is there anything simpler that can be done? I would prefer not to have to factory reset as the backup apps don't save app settings etc. on non-rooted phones.

A factory reset brought my data back, so i took the opportunity to install tweakstock. I guess it was a plus in the end.
I think we should all report the app for causing such damage to the phone with no warning whatsoever and no solution. It must suck to have to reset a stock phone.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
Expecting that I need to do a factory I bought MyBackup Pro and did a full backup but it seems that without root access the app settings are not saved. Since I didn't relish having to do rooting or factory reset I thought I would give the app developers a chance to do the right thing.
The response has been a series of generic emails pointing me at a new version of the app that do not fix my problem. I am guessing that it simply copies the (dysfunctional) APN it finds on first launch then its reset function simply writes this still dysfunctional setting back. Can't they just provide a simple appto write the correct Verizon APN?
I am not generally a ranting type but it is frustrating that there is no further recourse than just to advertise the serious bug and poor response to this forum. I posted a query also on Charge Forums, is there another good place to post a warning? Or am I just wasting my time?
Oh, and naturally my iPhone friends say "I told you so" just to rub salt in the wound!

1) Install app called "any cut" on wifi, it allows you to create any shortcut.
2) In the app go to new shortcut > activities> APNs
3) Create shortcut to access APNs (I guess default APN manager) and restore settings. Voila!

URL associations with apps removed from ALL thunderbolt, possibly all HTC phones soon

This is a widespread issue among thunderbolt users, but I haven't seen a thread here yet.
I haven't accepted the OTA update from earlier this week, but last night my phone booted with what I assume was a update. Now, any URL can only be directed to the Web browser, not an individual app (for example, Google play links link to the play website, not the app. Same with youtube links). There's not too much out there about it, but from what I've seen, this is due to a new patent lawsuit from apple directed at HTC. Apparently HTC laid down and just removed the function. This is terrible and pretty much ruins the phones functionality.
As of right now the only work around I've heard of is custom roms. Personally I don't have that option as this is a corporate phone. Has anyone heard anything or does anyone have any ideas for a work around? I imagine what would work would be a fake "browser" that you would set as the default and just would reroute to apps, but I certainly don't have the developing know-how to make such a thing.

With the HTC One series, there's a new "App Associations" menu that allows you to assign what apps will be used for various link types... is there no equivalent in the new OTA update for the Thunderbolt?

This is frustrating.
I updated to the software update and regret it to the fullest extent. Now NO videos of Youtube open in the app. This is a headache.
There is a new "apps association" menu in settings now, under Applications menu. But there is NO option to set YOUTUBE as a default like it used to be with ease.
Anybody here have a way around this??
What I found is using Opera Mini helps this by making it one less step to open videos in the app. But still miss the old direct way.
Help people!!
This is due to the patent judgment against HTC by Apple. The same judgment that recently delayed the release of the One X and the EVO 4G LTE. This feature will be removed in all future HTC releases.

You can't. Apple patented the tech, all they will do is go after a new developer of such an app. Your best bet is to root, run titanium backup, and flash a custom rom that is based on an older Thunderbolt ROM if you want the feature back.

That's not exactly some HTC key/core feature. It's in every Android phone and part of the Android source itself. Even the Galaxy Nexus does it. It's not even a phone specific feature. PCs have done it for years using file://some-local-filesystem-point and using sockets to link apps to other apps. That's all Android does pretty much. Since everyone should be rooted on here (the thunderbolt is painful if you don't), it doesn't affect anyone.
Also I see no source links in your post. Means nothing if you can't link to something verifiable.

This is due to the patent judgment against HTC by Apple. The same judgment that recently delayed the release of the One X and the EVO 4G LTE. This feature will be removed in all future HTC releases.

Apple said they should be the only one to make a smartphone and they are using the patent system to their advantage. I don't like it anymore then anyone else. Perhaps we should all send a letter to waz for him to become.the.next apple ceo and chairmen. He also uses android

Getting the Google Local search back?

Just got my phone today, and apparently the sticker on it that said updated meant that there is no local search due to... Lawsuits? Whatever.
I hate apple now.
Anyhow I've Googled it and can't find how to get this back.
Just articles talking about how it was removed.
Is there a way? Do I flash gapps from cwm recovery?

Does that apply to all phones they make now? I thought it was just the Nexus for a particular period. Now that you mention it though I just got mine today, same sticker and same results. This phone is so loaded and my first Android cell so I feel sorta lost and could be missing a setting.

I am not certain, but from the out of the box get go I was not able to bring any local apps up.
Not even settings, which was just asinine considering I am unfamiliar with touchwiz, and with ICS coming from GB... so I needed to find the settings and did not want to page through the apps.
None of that works, you can only search google on the internet, nothing else.
Same here, but I was wondering if it's a limitation of TouchWiz this is a crazy heavy skin. I'm coming from iPhone so I'm happily lost, I could have missed the setting.
Maybe someone can help me out, I'm running no sympathy VRALG1 however I pulled the googlequicksearchbox.apk(1.4.1.338691) from the nosymapthy VRALF2 , I can install it and my local search works great, until I reboot and then it doesn't work and the installed version of googlequicksearchbox.apk is back to version 1.4.1.396604. How do I stop it from upgrading or changing?
Check this out, it's long been resolved:

Yeah I figured it out myself, I just completely deleted it off my phone from titanium and then reinstalled the old version rebooted several times and it's still working.
