So i tried this app called easy battery saver as an alternative to juice defender, and as soon as i enabled it, the app nuked my data connection. I've tried disabling it and uninstalling it but nothing works.

My Droid Charge/Verizon also had data connection nuked by "easy battery saver" app. There are quite a few postings on various forums of other unfortunates, mostly Droid Charge, but a few LG.
My phone isn't rooted and I don't know how to flash the modem.
Is there anything simpler that can be done? I would prefer not to have to factory reset as the backup apps don't save app settings etc. on non-rooted phones.
Help anyone?

A factory reset brought my data back, so i took the opportunity to install tweakstock. I guess it was a plus in the end.
I think we should all report the app for causing such damage to the phone with no warning whatsoever and no solution. It must suck to have to reset a stock phone.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
Expecting that I need to do a factory I bought MyBackup Pro and did a full backup but it seems that without root access the app settings are not saved. Since I didn't relish having to do rooting or factory reset I thought I would give the app developers a chance to do the right thing.
The response has been a series of generic emails pointing me at a new version of the app that do not fix my problem. I am guessing that it simply copies the (dysfunctional) APN it finds on first launch then its reset function simply writes this still dysfunctional setting back. Can't they just provide a simple appto write the correct Verizon APN?
I am not generally a ranting type but it is frustrating that there is no further recourse than just to advertise the serious bug and poor response to this forum. I posted a query also on Charge Forums, is there another good place to post a warning? Or am I just wasting my time?
Oh, and naturally my iPhone friends say "I told you so" just to rub salt in the wound!

I would have preferred it if they outright blacklisted the charge from downloading the app, as well as any phone it also breaks.

Pretty sure its broken my data too, it keeps jumping on and off all day. Will check with my operator that there aren't issues in my area but it was fine over the weekend.
Dug this up from a different forum. Works for sure.
1) Install app called "any cut" on wifi, it allows you to create any shortcut.
2) In the app go to new shortcut > activities> APNs
3) Create shortcut to access APNs (I guess default APN manager) and restore settings. Voila!

you can follow all the steps to root your phone and reset and blablabla...
or you can wait for the software fix, which nobody knows when to come or nobody can guarantee to work.
or you can wait for 2.2, which is supposed to be faster but you never know.
or you can exchange for another phone and probably have the same problem.

I wouldn't mind playing the waiting game if just a couple of bugs. But what's a smart phone if it doesn't can't handled being used. I figured it was something I did cause the phone didn't always freeze like this. Is this the lag people are talking about?

Do a reset. However don't use Titanium Backup to restore system data. It will funk stuff up a lot of the time.

Back before this nice app we had to use a script at boot to change the settings this app now does. Y'all got in on Android when it was getting easy to do everything. I had to root by cmd prompt and use a list of commands now we have one click rooters. I am kinda jealous.

You definitely don't need an app killer. Eclair is set up to kill apps when memory is needed. I find things to be buggy when I use an app killer. Use launcher pro. Much smoother than touch whiz. Root with SRE. When all the att crap is gone the phone functions like it should have out of the box even if you disable the OC. Lagfix is optional but doing all these things really makes the phone fly

I can't wait to have some time to root this and get the latest from Cyanogen.
Yea. Tmobile had their hand in the cookie jar again.
Here is how you fix it (I'll post it again here)
This requires root.
Go into [Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Email] and clear the cache.
Download the attached Email.apk and put it on your SD card.
Using Root Explorer, navigate to /system/app
Rename the existing "Email.apk" to "Email.apk.bak"
Copy the attached Email.apk to /system/app and run it.
Launch your new Email app and set back up. Enjoy your new signature.

If you are on a stock rom and delete system apps you can never install any future OTA updates. The updates check all system files first and make sure they are unchanged. If you freeze apps you just defrost them before installing an OTA. If you deleted them then no chance of OTA update, period. If you are not on a stock rom then it doesn't matter. You might wind up with a continuous force close issue that requires reflashing the rom.

The downside ro this is if you remove the browser or anything when you do a hard reset it won't be there so you have to rely on a back up and be careful what you unistall.

Alright guys,
As most of you may already know, AT&T has been sending letters out claiming that users are tethering. I want to start a poll and see out of all you that received this letter or text. How many of you have AT&T Visual Voice Mail installed on your phone. Doesn't matter if you use it or not.
Reason being is that if you guys haven't seen the permissions for VVM this is what two of them are:
Network Communication:
View Network Connections
Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected
System Tools
Retrieve Running Apps
Allows the app to retrieve information about currently and recently running tasks. This may allow the app to discover information about which applications are used on the device
Reason for this poll is to see if VVM is what is notifying AT&T of the "Tethering" Activities.
To clarify on the poll answers:
If you have VVM frozen then consider it as not having it installed.
i use vvm. i used foxfi and got the letter. sad.

With AT&T VVM installed, I was using the built-in AOKP tethering and I got the letter.
I have VVM and have used the Clockworkmod Tether app, which does USB tethering, never gotten a letter.
Alright, you guys are going to love this. So I just called AT&T about the letter. I figured I'd stick with the "play dumb" approach. I said I didn't know what it was about and I couldn't figure out how to tether anyway. Blah blah blah.. he said that when tethering use is reported over the network, the technicians verify it through "multiple redundant verification". I told him that after we got the letter, I tried to see if I could tether and that my phone wouldn't let me. He then stated "well, there are lots of apps that can let you tether," and he proceeded to rattle off a prepared list of apps including FoxFi and a dozen or so others.
This is where it got interesting. He proceeded to tell me that according to their technicians, "You're not even using the stock firmware". I replied, "the what whatter?" (sticking with my "play dumb" approach) and he responded, "You know, the stock operating system that came with your phone or that AT&T updated over the air."
If you use their apps, they can see everything. And it can't be long before they figure out a way to see everything without secretly spying on you with an app.

This kind of meshes with a conversation I had the other day with my AT&T contact. He said that there's been a lot of effort lately put into finding rooted devices on the network and getting them off.
I think at this point we can safely say that any AT&T-provided stock app is to be considered spyware, and should be removed from the phone entirely (not frozen, deleted with phone caches wiped) the second you root.
That said, there's nothing stopping them from putting silent tracker apps elsewhere in the phone and hiding them completely. Here's the fun part: the contracts don't say anything about rooting the phone, do they? If they start kicking root users off the network or forcing us to change off of unlimited data because we've rooted our phone, they'd be begging for a class-action lawsuit.

Delete it entirely using Tibu. VVM is not a critical system process, and I don't trust that app at all.
I've been going through a lot of AT&T apps and most of them have the spyware on them.
As for being able to know if you are running stock firmware or not, I'm shocked to hear that.
As a community I think it's safe to say that no AT&T app can be trusted. They are using something to be able to gather information, we just have to figure out what it is.

It's pretty safe to assume that this and all current AT&T apps have spyware built in.
here is a step by step guide for removing carrier IQ, you will need root
download android tuner play store link
click on application manager
click / pivot to apps tab
click the button on the bottom that says user and it will change to system
longpress on android system
click open
click details
pivot to all the tabs and uncheck anything with carrier iq in it
uninstall (MAKE A BACKUP) LADDM.apk (it may be in system or user, check both)
remove lib files "libiq_client.so" and "libiq_service.so" from /system/lib (use a file explorer like root explorer with rw permissions)
install a ciq checker (voodoo's is good) and see if anything is left
presto!

the biggest benefit i had from removing it is stopping the useless processes from running and eating my battery life away. personally i don't really care about the data collection (that much) but the wakelock induced by it was driving me crazy.
it being so easy to remove (and to revert if you want to for warranty or ota purposes, so long as you back up whatever you remove) is also a pretty good reason to get rid of the spyware.
nice make sense. thats why my Android under battery keeps being like 5-6 hrs keep awake. nice!

Rebooted, stuck in boot loop. Also doesn't look like the 855 methodology for recovering from boot loop works on the 850. Any ideas how to recover from this, or am I hosed?

You have to flash back to stock. I did the sane thing last week. There are files and instructions in either this thread or the generic g3 thread for what you need to do. It was an easy fix.

Fixed reboot loop. If anybody else ends up in boot loop, I followed the method here:

Flashing back to stock was the solution I resorted to. I'm back up and running now which is a relief. My question is why does this seem to happen in some cases and not for others when taking the exact steps outlined in the OP?

If you took the exact steps as in the op... I'm not sure. When I had your problem I had just gone in and disable those two files, rather than all of the files.

Went through the steps again and no bootloop this time. I am going to lean towards user error the first time, though I usually check things twice.
I actually managed to get everything running without flashing. Mind that I do have a G2, but CarrierIQ works very similarly on both the G2 and G3 as far as files/services are concerned. My problem was that I deleted the 2 files before disabling the apps/services themselves.
With a good bit of time and finger tapping, I was able to get the Disable Service app installed and was able to disable the CarrierIQ services. That removed the looping dialog box.
This might not work for everyone, especially on the G3, but it's worth considering if you deleted the files and rebooted without disabling the services and don't want to reflash.
Worked flawlessly for me. Thanks
