URL associations with apps removed from ALL thunderbolt, possibly all HTC phones soon - Thunderbolt General

This is a widespread issue among thunderbolt users, but I haven't seen a thread here yet.
I haven't accepted the OTA update from earlier this week, but last night my phone booted with what I assume was a update. Now, any URL can only be directed to the Web browser, not an individual app (for example, Google play links link to the play website, not the app. Same with youtube links). There's not too much out there about it, but from what I've seen, this is due to a new patent lawsuit from apple directed at HTC. Apparently HTC laid down and just removed the function. This is terrible and pretty much ruins the phones functionality.
As of right now the only work around I've heard of is custom roms. Personally I don't have that option as this is a corporate phone. Has anyone heard anything or does anyone have any ideas for a work around? I imagine what would work would be a fake "browser" that you would set as the default and just would reroute to apps, but I certainly don't have the developing know-how to make such a thing.

With the HTC One series, there's a new "App Associations" menu that allows you to assign what apps will be used for various link types... is there no equivalent in the new OTA update for the Thunderbolt?

After the update there is that setting in the applications menu under settings

This is frustrating.
I updated to the software update and regret it to the fullest extent. Now NO videos of Youtube open in the app. This is a headache.
There is a new "apps association" menu in settings now, under Applications menu. But there is NO option to set YOUTUBE as a default like it used to be with ease.
Anybody here have a way around this??
What I found is using Opera Mini helps this by making it one less step to open videos in the app. But still miss the old direct way.
Help people!!

This is due to the patent judgment against HTC by Apple. The same judgment that recently delayed the release of the One X and the EVO 4G LTE. This feature will be removed in all future HTC releases.

I went with browser swap, but that doesn't really help with YouTube links. Maybe someone will stand up and code an app?

You can't. Apple patented the tech, all they will do is go after a new developer of such an app. Your best bet is to root, run titanium backup, and flash a custom rom that is based on an older Thunderbolt ROM if you want the feature back.

That's not exactly some HTC key/core feature. It's in every Android phone and part of the Android source itself. Even the Galaxy Nexus does it. It's not even a phone specific feature. PCs have done it for years using file://some-local-filesystem-point and using sockets to link apps to other apps. That's all Android does pretty much. Since everyone should be rooted on here (the thunderbolt is painful if you don't), it doesn't affect anyone.
Also I see no source links in your post. Means nothing if you can't link to something verifiable.

[DEV][APP] Netflix Updated 03-28-11

For those who haven't seen the news that the Netflix apk was taken from the LG Revolution system dump I thought I'd provide the apk for anyone wanting it.
I'm assuming this isn't a violation in anyway, but if so I apologize.
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/03/1...cation-pulled-from-lg-revolution-system-dump/
For those wishing to follow the development of this app on a general Android level I'll include the appropriate thread. Also I will try to provide updates as they come along, but if someone else catches it first let me know and I'll change the OP accordingly.
UPDATE (03-15-11): Now included is the DRM apk found within the LG Revolution. Credit given to cheebahawk over on the EVO forum. Also it is very likely this this will be a no-go given the DRM issue, but I have confidence that those who want this will try their hardest.
UPDATE (03-24-11): Attached is the new apk (com.netflix.mediaclient-2.apk) that auto-updated and included streaming on 03-23-11. However, Netflix has since shutdown streaming again. The attached files may still be useful.
UPDATE (03-27-11): Netflix has since completed shutdown access to their system from the Android app. Users are no longer able to access any functions of Netflix service.
UPDATE (03-28-11): Netflix has turned the service back on, so back functions have been restored. However, streaming is still a no-go.
Thanks man. Too bad we can't stream anything yet. The guys in the Evo thread have been trying to fix this problem and I hope they do.

From my understanding of all that has been said about the Netflix app and what Netflix has said in the past, it requires a phone with a chip that has DRM baked in, so the chip in the Incredible and Evo isn't new enough and will not work unless they hack the app and bypass the DRM requirement. (Which begs the question of whether the phone can manage the DRM via software and keep up)

Mine works minus the streaming which is understand. I can view and search and edit my queue however. If I attempt to stream it says it could not contact the service and kicks me out to the main screen.

You might have heard that Google was rolling out a new Android Market, complete with book and movie rentals. You also might have heard it would coming in the next few weeks. Well thanks to an anonymous source (possibly with a time machine) you can grab it today.
Hit the download link, and install it from your SD card like any other app. Fair warning -- we don't know if there will be any complications from doing this, but we haven't seen any so far. Use your best judgement. Discuss it in the forums!

Well I call it a method so nah! . I just hadn't thought of using it that way.

App associations?

I've had my One S for about a week now, coming from a Nexus S. I was pretty blessed with the vanilla updates, but was excited to use the best yet Sense 4. But one of the few gripes I have about this stock ROM is that when I click youtube, instagram or other links that have their own apps, I have no option to "complete action using..." And it kicks me to the web browser every time.
Have you noticed this? If you have, have you found a solution? Or a workaround at least?
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
I have noticed this, and I've noticed that when I click a Play Store link that it brings me to the web page instead of asking if I want to use the app instead. I've cleared defaults from my browser several times, nothing works. I'm pretty sure that it worked before, though, so I'm stumped.

What browser are you using? I downloaded the Chrome Beta immediately after setting up the phone so I have no experience with the stock browser. Are you using the stock browser?

This is a probelm with the updated Sense. App Associations only lets you pick a browser to open urls.
If any of you can call HTC or go and send them a report on their website it would help, I have a Rezound and the problem has been there with every ICS leak. I filled out a support ticket but don't have a One device.

This fix worked for me, in that it allowed me to open links to the market through webpages. However, it seems to create a new problem -- it breaks QR code scanners...
Looks like this may be happening on all HTC phones: http://androidforums.com/htc-thunderbolt/550016-app-associations-screwed-my-phone-up.html. From what I have read, this is due to the Apple lawsuit. Given that the lawsuit only dealt with US users, I wonder if European versions are having this problem.

Yeah, I started that thread over on Android forums.
I'm kinda glad to see that I'm not the only one having these problems.
I'm running a Thunderbolt. Just got the update (both my wife and I).
Now both of ours are having this problem.
I've searched and finally narrowed it down to the new App Associations section.
I don't think it has anything to do with which browser is used.
It just now forces all 'Web URLs' to use the browser as opposed to an installed app.
I don't know how extensive this is, and who all is going to be affected by it, but it's definitely a major issue. It destroyed the usability of this phone.
I'm can't root my wife's or my own phone. There's got to be a work around. Or they've got to be releasing a revised update. This couldn't have been done on purpose. The phone worked beautifully before, integrating all the apps that I had. Now everything I do is screwed up. Nothing is working how it's supposed to.
If it's any help...I have an HTC Thunderbolt through Verizon. Stock Rom.
Is this new App Association thing affecting all Androids? Is it something that was updated across the board, or only on specific devices/ or specific carriers? I've been banging my head against a wall trying to figure this all out for the last three days, and it seems like no one knows what I'm talking about, and my posts are invisible. I've been going crazy.

Looks like HTC got sued, so those of us in the US with an HTC product got screwed.
They are avoiding legal issues, be removing an Apple Patented process for detection of things which can open apps that are installed on the phone.
Without this, the phone is junk to me. It makes it wholly unusable and takes literally at least 3-4 times longer to complete my tasks.

There's not going to be an unrooted work around. You have some choices, but they all require you to learn to live with it, root, or get a different phone.
I am an angry consumer, and I punish companies that screw with me by not doing business with them, and encouraging others to avoid then as well. I've also been known to fire off an angry letter, or phone call to the offending party. Apple isn't worried about you or me, so that's wasted effort in this case. What's left is punishing HTC by not buying their products, but it's too late in both our cases, so basically call or write them telling them to "fu***ng pay Apple for the patent license and fix our phones". This App Associations bs ain't cutting it to keep us happy. Like you I don't want to root, but I think it may be the only way, unless a ****-ton of us tell HTC to fix it, it's going to stay the same.

If your custom rom is euro based, this makes sense. They were not part of the trademark infringement case brought by those idiots at Apple, so they don't have the app management workaround that is causing all the problems.
Does your custom rom have signal problems? As I recall, that was an issue being reported by tmous customers who tried some of the euro roms.

If you're stock, the Verizon SSO app is factory and likely not compromised. Antivirus scans will generally return a positive for apps that have interaction with your phone's system level, or that gather or store personal information and transmit it elsewhere. In this case, unless you downloaded apps from sources besides Google play, it's very likely a false positive. Verizon SSO (single sign on) is a factory app from your carrier designed to save your log in credentials for use in all of your installed Verizon apps.

In this case, unless you downloaded apps from sources besides Google play, it's very likely a false positive. Verizon SSO (single sign on) is a factory app from your carrier designed to save your log in credentials for use in all of your installed Verizon apps.

Well remember last year Google pulled about 100 apps from the market that had hidden payloads and malware.... So we can't really trust Google anymore then we can trust ms windows. My trend micro does not detect the ask from vzw.

Yeah. I remember that, that's why I said "very likely". What I was really getting at is that malware detection apps for mobiles, unlike those for pcs, aren't very sophisticated and often rely on shaky criteria to separate malicious apps from trustworthy ones. Any app downloaded really has the potential to be malicious. Best thing to do is try to stick with apps from top developers (and make sure that top app is theirs as there are imposter apps too) or with download counts in the tens of thousands, it's more likely that those apps have been closely scrutinized by Google and others as any potential malware would affect a larger number of users.
BTW: your screen name is Google_Nexus... So why not get a nexus and have the ICS/ JB you want that way? Not being belligerent, just asking is all. Slim chance of either release for this phone any time soon.

[POLL] Tethering & AT&T Visual Voice Mail

Alright guys,
As most of you may already know, AT&T has been sending letters out claiming that users are tethering. I want to start a poll and see out of all you that received this letter or text. How many of you have AT&T Visual Voice Mail installed on your phone. Doesn't matter if you use it or not.
Reason being is that if you guys haven't seen the permissions for VVM this is what two of them are:
Network Communication:
View Network Connections
Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected
System Tools
Retrieve Running Apps
Allows the app to retrieve information about currently and recently running tasks. This may allow the app to discover information about which applications are used on the device
Reason for this poll is to see if VVM is what is notifying AT&T of the "Tethering" Activities.
To clarify on the poll answers:
If you have VVM frozen then consider it as not having it installed.
i use vvm. i used foxfi and got the letter. sad.

I have it disabled because I could never figure how to use it. I've been using foxfi for months and I haven't gotten a letter or text yet.

When you say disabled, do you mean frozen or just installed but not using it?

With AT&T VVM installed, I was using the built-in AOKP tethering and I got the letter.
I have VVM and have used the Clockworkmod Tether app, which does USB tethering, never gotten a letter.
Alright, you guys are going to love this. So I just called AT&T about the letter. I figured I'd stick with the "play dumb" approach. I said I didn't know what it was about and I couldn't figure out how to tether anyway. Blah blah blah.. he said that when tethering use is reported over the network, the technicians verify it through "multiple redundant verification". I told him that after we got the letter, I tried to see if I could tether and that my phone wouldn't let me. He then stated "well, there are lots of apps that can let you tether," and he proceeded to rattle off a prepared list of apps including FoxFi and a dozen or so others.
This is where it got interesting. He proceeded to tell me that according to their technicians, "You're not even using the stock firmware". I replied, "the what whatter?" (sticking with my "play dumb" approach) and he responded, "You know, the stock operating system that came with your phone or that AT&T updated over the air."
If you use their apps, they can see everything. And it can't be long before they figure out a way to see everything without secretly spying on you with an app.

This kind of meshes with a conversation I had the other day with my AT&T contact. He said that there's been a lot of effort lately put into finding rooted devices on the network and getting them off.
I think at this point we can safely say that any AT&T-provided stock app is to be considered spyware, and should be removed from the phone entirely (not frozen, deleted with phone caches wiped) the second you root.
That said, there's nothing stopping them from putting silent tracker apps elsewhere in the phone and hiding them completely. Here's the fun part: the contracts don't say anything about rooting the phone, do they? If they start kicking root users off the network or forcing us to change off of unlimited data because we've rooted our phone, they'd be begging for a class-action lawsuit.

Especially when the US Supreme Court ruled that it was completely legal for us to root our phones. They just don't have to provide technical support for rooted phones.

Delete it entirely using Tibu. VVM is not a critical system process, and I don't trust that app at all.
I've been going through a lot of AT&T apps and most of them have the spyware on them.
As for being able to know if you are running stock firmware or not, I'm shocked to hear that.
As a community I think it's safe to say that no AT&T app can be trusted. They are using something to be able to gather information, we just have to figure out what it is.

You'll have to do a proper restoration to stock.. I believe vincom has detailed this procedure.

At this point I would encourage everyone to remove ALL AT&T apps from a rooted phone.

It's pretty safe to assume that this and all current AT&T apps have spyware built in.
