The iPhone 5 vs. The Galaxy S III - General Topics

I was recently watching a speed test on YouTube and according to its results, the brand new iPhone was almost double the speeds of the galaxy s 3 in certain areas. (will post the links momentarily).
So what do you guys think? To me personally, I am one to believe that quad scores don't really matter, But there are a few things that convince me that the iPhone 5 can seriously take on newer android phones now. If it came down to choosing a phone, I would probably just pick the one that's the cheapest for my plan lol.
Looking forward to your input.

What's with the obsession of comparing and trashing the iPhone? HOnestly iPhone5 and SGS3 or any of the current flagship Android phones are for very different audiences and preferences and as much as I hate Samsung you're not gonna be disadvantaged in anyway choosing it. The same applied for the iPhone5. Im pretty sure there will be a plethora of responses claiming the iPhone5 is worse than the SGS3 based on observations but not first hand experience so what's the point of asking people's opinions? This is an ANDROID forum and a lot of people here are not known for being neutral and reasonable and hate things (eg Apple) just for the sake of being hateful. They will not give you a rational response if you're looking for one, assuming you are.

I guess you're right, I was having this same discussion with my friend in school and it really just came down to preferences.

Bro honestly just hardware wise, gs3 only beats the i5 by a small amount.

[Q] Why do Samsung users care so much about the Sensation?

I cant understand why they come on here or every youtube video about the Sensation and post how their Sgs2 is better?! like who cares!?! We like a phone that isnt made out of plastic!!
Does it make them feel better about their purchase when they post stupid stuff..
Why do BMW, M-B, and Audi owners compare their cars? Both HTC and Samsung positioned the Sensation and the SGS2 as their "flagships" giving everyone the right to be critical. If you look at the SGS2 board, all's not perfect. I think everyone's just curious to see how the Sensation compares to both HTC's hype and other recently launched high-end phones.
in short yes... they are in every thread praising the almighty sgs2... but anyway this thread is irrelevant and should be deleted
Two awesome phones being released at the same time makes people in the market to buy consider both phones. When you do that, you consider all the specs to what you desire.
Both phones are great. The problem is once people decide which phone they prefer, they defend why they believe one phone is better than the other. It sparks debate, then at some point it gets childish when people start calling names, defending a manufacturer or condescend others for wanting one phone over the other.
Not to mention, once you shell out any amount of $$$ for something you have to justify it. If someone is saying it's not worth it, that may spark a bit of emotion if you like said product.
To me, it's more damaging than it does good. Everyone needs to agree to disagree or just be content with their purchases. If there are benefits of one phone over the other, then fine. Share information and let everyone decide what they want on their own. No need to call people "trolls" or "fanboys" because they prefer one device over the other. It's silly.

Respectfully, you can just say all Samsung guys come over posting that the GSII is better, because it's there are a fair share of HTC sensation users that do the same, simply because of what the below/above/PREVIOUS post said. Generally (from what I've seen on other forums) ONCE you get the device, whether it be Sensation or the GSII, you tend to lay off the forums because you "contempt" with whichever phone you went for, because they're both beauties.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure they put the Sensation down because they're trying to validate the purchase of the SG2. You have to admit, flaunting around your product, saying it's better, makes it seem better.
Who cares, Sammy just pist off htc release Sensation at the Same time as SGII. That's how bussiness is. Competitions..... Isn't great for us consumers? Plus im not dumb enough paying 750-800 for that plastic crap. Sensation 500 full retail and tons loads of dev.

This -well-analyzed- behavior is called "Cognitive Dissonance" , and yes, it makes them feel better, even superior to do so. =D
so long, waiting for the sensation to come out unbranded on the market in germany.
Sgs 2 owner here, but loved my htc hero before this. Was checking out the sensation and evo 3d before I went for the sgs 2.
I liked all these phones equally, there really is not much between them that it really matters.
but sgs was released just as my upgrade come up.
Still very interested in the sensation and how people are finding it, so is why i come to this forum.
personally I believe I would of been just as happy with the sensation. looks a fantastic device that will be even nicer with a few patches/upgrades.
The SII is a much better offering but it still has huge, glaring weaknesses in my eyes. The cheap plastic casing is a turn off, I don't like the buttons or the hardware design whatsoever (I detest it so much I wouldn't even use a free SII) and the UI looks absolutely horrible. And those are mostly just the cosmetic flaws.
It does some things right but at the end of the day, if I somehow acquired that phone I'd sell it in favor of getting another dual core like the HTC Sensation or Evo 3D.
Lol another fanboy thread. I see plenty of HTC fanboys in the Samsung forum. Starting a whole thread about this as well? We all know the mods don't care either, or are in with the game. Sorry that the Sensation isn't getting the type of buzz that the GS2 is and this forum is way smaller, so people have nothing better to do than speculate and start ****. Dogs pushed into a corner will bark louder. Would be nice if all the fanboys just choked each other to death, but then again it is a HUMAN flaw.

Interesting. So, I would think Sensation users don't care/compare Samsung or other products. That would be my question to the OP and other users.
EDIT: Why do you (OP) care about what others do? This is a forum, people will post and visit anywhere they like. If you don't understand this very simple logic, you better not use internet.

Don't we all!
Personally I spent about 3 weeks deciding between the SGS2 and the Sensation, both are obviously great products.
I must have read every review and comparison on the net.
In the end I chose the Sensation because I prefer the solid feel, HTC Sense, and I'll take resolution above screen brightness and vibrancy, but these are all matters of personal choice and I can understand why others would choose differently.
Each to their own and enjoy your phone whichever one you bought.
The SGS II fans are hoping more hackers get one so they'll get more support .
They also hope someone will port Sense 3.0 to the SGS II, but that's not going to happen .

This goes against the objective of the thread. It's blasphemous to think about other products as per OP. You are not allowed to compare other products.
[/s off now]
What I am more worried about is why so less posts/threads about the product. The GS2 forum was filled with comments, complaints, discussion and the internet was filled with topics/reviews/analysis. Sensation on the opposite seems so quite. Everyone wants to know about the phone and I can't wait to read more.

SGS II went on sale first. That's why.

Why ICS is important to me.

Watch the video (In case you havent seen it yet!). In it Matias Duarte explains how the Android team is beginning to try and create a cohesive and unified atmosphere with the os at the most basic levels. I for one, am absolutely thrilled to see that they are finally going to be paying attention to design and aesthetics. Usability of the platform can also benefit from this immensely.
I am also tired of people saying "ICS isnt all that special". It really doesnt matter how "special" you think it should be. What matters is that its the next iteration of the os. We all want to have our devices updated and current. So wanting this on our devices has less to do with design in this sense, and a lot more to do with jumping on the wagon of unification. I would greatly prefer beautiful apps and ease of use over anything Gingerbread has offered us so far. Now I already know that a lot of the visual benefits of ICS come mainly from theming and such, but its profoundly more exciting when the theming itself is coming from the creators of Android and not some hard-to-find source in the app market.
Lastly, I would appreciate it if you guys could give your thoughts on this. Are you excited to see the new direction the Android team along with Matias, are going in? Do you feel that they are focusing on some rather important points in the software (usability, framework, aesthetics) or not? And of course please keep the flaming and crude/rude comments to yourselves. Thanks all for listening to my rant.

+1 internets I totally agree!
As nice as ICS's upgrade would be...it's not in Sammy's or AT&T interest
Sammy want's device sales and AT&T wants new/renewed contracts. By limiting ICS to 2012 devices, it provides incentive for 2010/2011 device owners to pony up for the new hotness with the new software.
Now before anyone wants to say, "WAIT WAIT, Apple..." save it. We're not talking about Apple here. Sammy is the OEM and they control what happens for the product line.
Sure you can wait for a dev to 'hopefully' get around to releasing an ICS port and yeah, it may be decent. That's your choice.
My upgrade plans begin in 2013 when ICS should have a few months in the wild and become more mature. By then all my smartphones will be eligible for upgrade discounts. I have no issue with AT&T's service as they allow me to keep my grandfathered unlimited data plan.
I'd rather have ICS when it's grown up and not so much a baby. Also, fully functional on my device too would be nice.

Joshua Topolsky! My man! He was the senior editor at Engadget.com before leaving to start theverge.com. He actually left his Apple iPhone after the 3gs I think. He soon thereafter bought a Nexus One. Which I think he still uses to this day. And touts it every chance he gets. He does however praise apple for incitefull design and craftsmanship. I mean he is in a business (tech blogging) that is notorious for praising the behemoth company(not that this is a good thing) But trust you me when I say he isn't afraid to drop the hammer on Apple when he voices his gripes over their products. I would venture to say that most blogging sites require their employees to work on Macbooks now though. It seems to me that they would rather choose a totalitarian system like the Macs because they are less prone to buginess and viruses. And when your in an industry that thrives off of having secure data on close deadlines and less vulnerabilities, Macs (imo) just do it better. I dont use a mac, never have, I have had an Iphone 3g one time for a while. But will probably never go back. Unless I become rich or something. You do have to admire their design principles though both physically and software wise. When you compare Apple's aesthetics to Androids up till now, its just no-contest which is more cohesive and well thought out.

funny thing is I used to frequent a guitar forum and a well known member was a Samsung senior cdma systems engineer and his phone was an iPhone. that was before cdma iPhones existed so he was obviously on att which is big in texas. he didn't boast about apple too much nor Samsung, basically the only things I remember that stood out was he refuted the idea that the apple products have Good audio. said the newer apple products are not as good as the older ones and suffered from clipping (overdrive basically) and boasted the galaxy s in that area. but when it came down to it he was a fan of ios for the accessories and high quality audio software (garage band for the ipad) and got an ipad 2.
i always have an upgrade....(4 lines=leverage) .. but i will not purchase another phone until ICS is available, especially because of updates. i want the note..but if no ics pre-installed..i aint buying.. i almost went to verizon for the nexus but they dont have good coverage where i travel
ICS should be important to everyone. Even if only for the principle of it.

Surprised about the Apple vs Samsung verdict?

Well I figured since this is a Samsung phone forum I could post this here... Anyways mod delete if you feel like...
My point is I am not surprised about the verdict today at all...
Let's face it.. this doesn't make sense to me.. Apple is a huge American company, Samsung is from Korea.. so for a case so big shouldn't it happen in some international country or something? And plus guess what... the jury is 9 American citizens. Seriously? They probably have some iStuffs, their wives, husbands, kid, friends probably do.. so which side do you think they would be on?
Anyways this is what I think, and why I am not surprised Apple won on all counts..

Oh I knew it was gonna turn out like this. About 75% of the population here see a smartphone and label it a iPhone, they see a tablet and label it a iPad. Who did you think the American public was going to side with. That's the power of advertisement Apple controls over all smartphones & tablets. When you are able to replace the generic name of a product with your brand name for that same product and have the whole population calling it that way you are in control. (Q-tip, Vaseline, Band-Aid, ChapStick, Windex, iPod, etc.)
Really when you think about it, the ruling isn't surprising at all. Apple wants to get rid if their competitors and lawsuits are just one way to do it. In my mind, a really cheap and almost disgraceful way to do it, but, that's politics for you! No one remembers Tucker (old car company) but i was wiped out by the Detroit 3 through a lawsuit as well. Only 50 cars were ever produced because of it.
I hate politics, but this is how things go down... Hopefully, up here in Canada we don't have repercussions from the American trial, but who knows right? All three of my phones have been Samsung, and I want my fourth to be one as well, even if I have to buy international.
Apple... Great products, however they need to stop suing about everything. But that's politics, and I hate them.
Samsung... Best of luck to you. I want another great phone... Maybe make it in the shape of a circle so Apple can't sue about the shape (how can you patent a shape anyway!? I might as well patent the sphere and sue all the ball makers in the world. )
May the force be with you Sammy

I'm not surprise with the verdict. I expected crApple to win, not because of the patent infringement claims, but due to their huge advantages. Basically, Samsung was the underdog in this case. Keep in mind that crApple's headquarter is just a mere 10 miles away from the courthouse and the jurors were picked from the heart of Silicon Valley, where Steve Jobs was from.
It could be that they let Apple win because Apple's a really big company that supports the American Economy

Its sad really. Do you see Bentley and Mercedes suing Hyundai for making their cars look like ripoffs? Designer clothes stores suing old navy for clothes that look exactly the same? A third grader for drawing a rounded rectangle??
I just couldn't help at Tim cook's release to his employees about how they were reluctant to sue and how they want to protect innovation for all. Bunch of goddamn money hungry elitist assholes. If they really cared about innovation and technology they would be a little more concerned with moving the whole segment forward, not hoarding everything to themselves.
That being said, some things Samsung did really are ridiculous copies (the charger cube for our phone looks exactly like the iPhones...)...and they should have partially lost.
They won't make it very long after people don't think their **** is so hot anymore and they burn all their cash on stupid lawsuits...watch out in the near future for a bombed product upgrade...could come as early as the iPhone 5 I bet.

I don't see how Apple won in a business sense.. Samsung had already established themselves as the number one smartphone manufacturer in the world by focusing on territory. Now they can focus more on design. It was a billion dollar gamble that paid of nicely. They don't need to do anything but but put out a bunch of vanilla Android devices with top of the line hardware and a physical design that doesn't look like an iPhone. There are many possibilities. This was a win for Samsung and us since we will get less iOS look and feel and better functionality.

Samsung Lost, Owes Apple over 1 Billion Dollars

Apple won the case against Samsung and now Samsung owes 1.05 Billion. This is really bad news for this industry. Patenting a rectangle with curved edges is ridiculous! Karma, I hope Apple gets theirs one day. Here's a link. http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/24/apple-v-samsung-decision/
I wonder what this really means for Samsung. Taking a Billion Dollar hit isnt going to be easy I dont care who you are, a Billion will hurt ya! (cept maybe gunny) Isnt HTC and Apple still fighting over One X Links? Hox is still pretty much HTC's Flagship phone. For some reason the talk about HTC/ATT being scared of Apple..(and that's why our bootloader is locked) makes a little more sense now. I dismissed it originally. HTC will be settling out of court i betcha lol. And doing whatever Apple asks. Scary stuff!

Samsung was pretty blatant in their copying of several of those patents tho. Not 1.5 bil. Worth but hey. Dont copy, its that simple:beer:

The hox physical design should be safe, don't think that even Apple can claim that the appearance is even remotely similar. Sadly Sense uses a green icon with rounded corners and a white phone inside so we may soon be treated to a blue icon with rounded corners and a yellow phone inside Pinch to zoom and multi touch are probably the most serious issue and as much as I dislike Apple products you have to admit that these are somewhat non trivial aspects of their functionality. However that is probably an Android thing and Apple will have to go after Google for it. And that is where it gets interesting because Google will claim that it makes no money from Android directly and one has to wonder if they have something in the Motorola pile of patents to sue Apple over.
As stated, there are already threads about this. Please search before posting. Thank you.

Apart from GSMArena, I don't see why anyone would bother to read these reviews at all. They are all mainstream media. You can find much better reviews that BoneXDA listed from certain other obscure sites. Gizmodo?? Is that place still alive?
Some of those reviews really took a dump on the Galaxy S4's low light performance, they place the phone in no light and then bash it for not doing well. I wouldn't expect a point and shoot to produce decent photos in those conditions.

Hey, these are official reviews. Everybody has a point of view and opinion. At the end of the day we make our own choice but why not reading these reviews to see different perspectives?
Lol at the verge link.. They love the iPhone at that site.

lol sorry guys, I'm doing all this from my iPod touch lol!!!!
The Android Authority one came off as a bit harsh, and it did that thing in reviews that other reviewers do (like Erica Griffin) that irks me. If you're coming from the S3 and you've used it a lot and now you're looking at the S4, you can come off sounding jaded when you're talking about the "small bump up" from the previous device. I have never owned a Galaxy S-line phone before, so saying it's too much like its previous counterpart doesn't help me that much since I haven't used it. People new to the phone line, like me, want to know how it does in its own merits without looking at it purely from nostalgic goggles. I'm buying a Galaxy S4, not a Galaxy S3 bundled with a Galaxy S4.
Yes, they are pretty similar, but then again I think someone has to be pretty naive to expect "revolutionary changes" when we're talking about a yearly phone release, in addition to multiple other phone releases in those years. For what it did do, I see plenty of things that make it a solid upgrade, just going by objective differences. It's asinine that the only thing separating the Galaxy S4 and being "completely awesome!" is that it used a polycarbonate back and not an aluminum one. I don't know about anyone else, but, I calibrate my standards a lot differently then that.
Well it's the "Plasticky design" debacle all over again. That's to be expected though but after buying the SGP neo-hybrid, I don't think that will be a big problem for me. As for the rest of the reviews about hardware, yeah I agree, this is pretty much the Koenigsegg of smartphone. It might not look beautiful but it packs a whole lot of punch. On the software side, I think I will disable lots of bloatware save for a view like air gesture. All and all I, as a power user, won't be disappointed in this even one bit.

Engadget isnt too impressed with the phone, calling samsung predictable. I wonder if they are biased or too realistic. Perhaps they have got a faulty unit

Everyone said the same thing last year... and the GS3 became the phone of the year.
And I do understand people want a premium phone, but in all honesty, get a case.
I've seen so many people with Iphone5s with ugly cases. Doesn't that ruin the premium look and feel of your phone?
__
Verge said SO many good things about the phone, but then at the end he said he would never use it because it felt... disgusting or something, lol.
These reviews make me question my order as I'm using the One but battery life isn't great on the One. But then again they all said bad things about the S3 and look what happened there.

Maybe wait a little bit longer. Samsung anounced a dust and waterproof version of the S4.

Not worth the wait or the most likely extra money IMO. Who cares about dust proof and waterproof?

But all of this beauty in design falls victim to one flaw, and it’s the same that Samsung has been dealing with for the past several years. Build quality and materials simply do not feel as premium as the phone really is. It’s a bit misleading. The Galaxy S4 definitely operates as a world-class smartphone, but in your hand and pocket it feels plastic-y and a bit cheap.
We would have loved to see Samsung take some initiative in this area and upgrade to aluminum casing or perhaps a more innovative material like ceramic or polycarbonate, but alas, maybe that will come with the Galaxy Note 3 or Galaxy S5. For now it seems Samsung is set in its current design language.

world-class review indeed.
Engadget's "camera samples" are atrocious. Let me see the original photos!
